The process of making a friend is a very unique one. It depends on the person one is trying to become friends with, it depends on ones gender, it depends on ones age, but most importantly it depends ones personality. Every individual is different and how they make friends differs just as greatly. The way I make friends depends heavily on my personality. As an introverted person, I tend to first meet potential friends through what I call forced association. After the initial meeting, I evaluate them and determine whether or not I think they should be my friend. Bonding follows and acceptance is the final stage.

Making a new friend is by definition a new and non-routine interaction, therefore it is quite difficult for me to initiate the process. This is where the situation where another person and I are placed in an environment where we have no choice but to interact with each other. The largest and most important type of forced interaction for me is school, and more specifically, classes. It is impossible to be completely separate from other students in a class. Consequently, I met all my best friends in school . Another type of situation comes when you meet a friend, of one of your friends. It would be extremely rude to not interact with someone that your friend considered to be friend. That is the way that I met a very close friend of mine . Her name is Breanna . I was not friends with Breanna when I first met her. I had to figure out who she was before that could happen.

Evaluation has always been very important to me. I constantly evaluate and reevaluate myself, my friends, my schoolwork, and so forth, almost to the point of obsession. Before I can become friends with someone, I have to determine whether or not I want to be friends with them. If ones own needs in a relationship are not met then it is impossible for them to fulfill others. The first step in evaluation is the establishment of common ground. It is very unlikely that I will become even casual friends with someone who I have nothing in common with.

One of the first things I look for is intelligence. Part of my personality is the love of intelligence. A very important part of a friendship for me is intellectual stimulation. If it is missing, the friendship will begin to fail. So intelligence and knowledge are two things I look for almost immediately in a new acquaintance. Breanna possesses both of these qualities and she possesses them in areas that we both find interesting. Both of us have an interest in the sciences. But knowledge and skills alone make a person boring, so I also look for common personality traits.

After I get to know someone and I think we should become friends, I try to spend as much time with them as possible. Mostly for the purpose of bonding but also for continued evaluation. The evaluation never really ends, it just becomes easier as I get to know them better and better. But if at any time, they fail to meet my standards for friendship, I make it clear to them, either by direct confrontation or by spending time with them less frequently. If change is not affected

then the friendship will fade away. But the main purpose of bonding is to get to know them as well as possible, and for them to get to know me as well as possible. To this end, we will frequently go out to movies, participate in after-school groups together, and basically spend time together. This not only leads to a closer relationship, it provides a set of common experiences we can both draw upon. Breanna and I ate lunch together at her house every day, went out to movies on the weekend frequently This getting to know each other, or bonding, allowed us to cement our relationship. Once that was accomplished, acceptance naturally followed. Acceptance is always the goal for me when I start a friendship. True acceptance for me only exists with my closest friends. Acceptance is the time when I can truly be myself. It is when I can say what I mean without having to worry about hurting peoples feelings or having them think less of me. This is possible because after acceptance, I know that most anything I say will not hurt my close friends and vice versa.

Acceptance is a nice break from the process of becoming friends because it is where the evaluation is almost non- existent . But acceptance is by no means easy to come by. It is unlikely that I will reach that stage with more than a handful of friends in my lifetime. I prefer to have a small group of friends that I have lengthy contact with as opposed to a large group of friends who I do not know as well. Also, once I have reached acceptance with a couple or a few friends, it is almost impossible for me to reach it with any other friends. I only have so much time to spend with people and I do not want to split it up in too many ways. Therefore I prefer to keep a few very close friends with whom I can share a deep and meaningful relationship with.

Friends are one of the things that make life worth living. Along with my family, they provide a support structure and a group that I can share happiness with. Making friends has never been, and never will be, an easy process for me. Although my process of making friends is a long and arduous one, the end result far outweighs any risks of rejection I may take.

Hamlet, Fortinbras and Leartes are all people distinct in their actions that carry out their own lives. These men interact in the play with one another and all seem to have nothing in common except revenge for a father's death. There are many circumstances surrounding them that mysteriously connect them. All three of these characters had some reason to avenge a horrifying incident in their life, but they all had their own unique and different way of conquering their objective. All seek revenge in ways of despise and hatred. Fortinbras better then the three takes action and sets not to waste time rather to make hast in an operation to win back his fathers once known land of Denmark.

"Fort" brining value in the name of Fortinbras suggesting he is headstrong and invincible like a wall or a castle. Physically active Fortinbras prince of Norway had levied an army to attack and conquer Denmark. Though son of the late King of Norway, the crown of Norway had gone to his uncle. Throughout the play Fortinbras was kept busy in planning the invasion of so call it Poland. Desiring to win nobility through the sword, he cares not for the prize of his brilliance rather in reality his only yearning is to take over his fathers once deserved land Denmark.

Fortinbras Go captain and greet the Danish King. Tell him that buy his licence Fortinbras craves the conveyance of a promis'd march over his kingdom…

Hamlet Good Sir whose powers are these.

Captain They are of Norway, sir.

Hamlet How purpos'd, sir, I pray you.

Captain Against some part of Poland…

Hamlet Why, then the polka will never defend it (Hamlet IV iv, 1-4, -1,)

Fortinbras is an empire builder who desires only to fight for glory and revenge. Its ironic, he is fitted by character to inherit the kingdom of Hamlet. Sly and persuasive Fortinbras directs his goal with direct timing and precision, as opposed to Laertes.

Easley persuaded and indulgent Laertes son to Polonius is a fool played by Claudius the current King of Denmark. As unconcerned for the order of society as he is for his own salvation, Laertes would rather dare damnation than leave his fathers honor and his own besmirched. Though the sight of his sisters madness brings him to a moment of true madness, he is still primarily enraged by his fathers death Obscure funeral - / No trophy, sword, nor hatchment oer his bones, / No noble rite nor formal ostentation. (Hamlet IV vii, 10-1) To vindicate his honor, Laertes stoops to a most dishonorable practice. Laertes is so concerned about his formal and outward terms of honor that he cannot permit his natural feelings to rule his will. In this concern for outward honor he further dishonors himself by the false statement that he will act honorably with Hamlet. Saying that I do receive your offered love like love, / And will not wrong it, (Laertes V ii, 47-48) he goes and chooses the lethally sharp weapon that the king has persuaded him in poisoning. Had Laertes acted upon the honorable promptings of his conscience, he would have avoided his own death and, by allying himself with Hamlet, would have won the gratitude of the future King. Laertes false sense of honor and pride override his better instincts to the fatal harm of both.

In contrast Hamlet the Prince of Denmark is notably cleaver but rather a victim of his own procrastination. While returning to his Kingdome he is advised that Ophelia is dead. At the sight of her grave Hamlet jumps into Ophelias grave, and fights with Laertes in her grave. He professes, "I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers/Could not, with all their quantity of love,/ Make up my sum" (Hamlet V, I, 50-5), during the fight with Laertes in Ophelias grave, but he tells her that he never loved her, when she returns his letters and gifts, while she was still alive. Hamlet faintly hints his consciousness of his dissolving sanity as he tells Laertes that he killed Polonius in a fit of madness. Hamlets madness in no way reflects Ophelias true madness; his actions contrast those of hers. Truly the down fall in Hamlet is not that of mood swings or lost love for Ophelia rather in his procrastination in avenging his fathers death. He allowed time to pass as he saw his guilty uncle rise to the top of the throne. To his disbelief he desired no more then to kill him, but he had to make sure it was him who had killed his father. This waiting had killed his inner soul, interim lead him into believing Polonius was Claudius behind a curtain and had slain him before his mothers eyes. In waiting for this moment Hamlet not thinking killed the wrong man and then forth sent himself to death. "I have sent to seek him and to find the body./How dangerous is it that this man goes loose!/ Yet must not put the strong law on him" (Claudius IV, III, 1-)

Hamlet, Fortinbras and Leartes are all people distinct in their actions that carry out their own lives. These men interact in the play with one another and all seem to have nothing in common except revenge for a father's death. All men unique and different, all three attempting to achieve a goal. They were all the seeds to a new generation. But the generation of the stronger and wiser man lived to show it.

Software Maintenance

By David Peover 141010

The overall objective of software maintenance is to help the customer use all the activities of the software that they have bought or that they have had developed.

Software maintenance begins at the start of the development process and continues right the way through to the delivery stage and effectively never actually ends. The reason that software maintenance continues even after the product is finished is because of the different levels that software maintenance has. One such example is updating software. It can be easier to update software than to write a completely new program. One company that does this is Microsoft. Microsoft continually update all of there programs from windows through to internet explorer. The most obvious maintenance to any of their products would be their updates to the windows program. For example windows 5 was updated to windows 8 and so on. Microsoft will continue to maintain windows into the future by updating the program rather than writing a new program. Therefore the origins of the newest version can be traced right back to the original even after all of the modifications added to the versions in between.

Software maintenance can be divided up into four types adaptive, perfective, corrective and emergency.

o Adaptive maintenance is to maintain the software according to changes in the situation in which the software is being used

o Perfective maintenance tries to improve the software by making it easier for the user in someway.

o Corrective maintenance is to fix a problem that the software may have. The problem may arise from programming errors or from viruses.

o Emergency maintenance is to correct a problem immediately to prevent loss of earning, life or property.

A problem that can arise is knowing if what is needed is maintenance or development. Therefore it is very important to know and understand the customers' needs. When you receive the customer requirements the first step is to see what the best course of action is. Either to maintain the current software to enable to carry out the new tasks the user needs or to write new software to meet the requirements of the user. The most likely and common solution is to maintain or update existing software. This is also the cheapest way in most cases.

Companies which use computers or develop programs will spend huge amounts of money on software maintenance and would rather they didn't have to but it is simply a necessity and a must for such business. software maintenance is so expensive because it requires that people work for long periods of time constantly maintaining all software. It is commonly explained simply with the Phillips law of software

Software outlives hardware

It is because of the rate at which hardware is developed that software maintenance is so expensive. When hardware moves forward through development the software needs to be maintained so it can provide the best results for the user that the new hardware is capable of. An example of this is the word processors of today. These programs are all based on the original programs made thirty years ago the only difference is that they have been maintained so that the software is at as high a standard as possible.

Another reason for the expense of software maintenance is the fact that it is difficult. Software maintenance is difficult because either the user is demanding or because the software wasn't written to be maintained or because of both. The user can often need changes made to the software to cope with new requirements and may want too many changes at one time. Also the fact that programmers develop the program to work and not to be maintained. To the programmer it is easy to read because they wrote it. To anyone else it can cause difficulty. Then if both of these problems occur it can create a long maintenance program and therefore high expense.

To get round one of these problems is for the development team to follow five objectives

o Clear and simple design

o Clean, readable code

o Complete and readable documentation

o Use of standards

o Complete, easy to use suite

Even if all of these objectives are met software maintenance will still be expensive.

The diagram below shows optimistic and realistic estimates for development and maintenance of a software system.

Optimistic Estimate

Year 1 4 5 6 7 8

Persons 10 1 1 1 4 1 1 1 4

$K/Person 150 150 165 180 00 0 50 80 00

Total $K 1500 150 165 180 800 0 50 80 100

Realistic Estimate

Year 1 4 5 6 7 8

Persons 10 1 1 10 1 1 10 1 1

$K/Person 150 150 165 180 00 0 50 80 00

Total $K 1500 150 165 1800 00 0 500 80 00

This example shows a product that started at $1.5 million. Even the optimistic estimate shows a 68% rise of maintenance cost to $. million in nine years and the realistic estimate shows a rise of 80% to $5.6 million. I used this example to show that there is simply no way around the expense of software maintenance.

"The killer Angels" my feelings on this book are the same since the first day I sat down to read or look over it. I would have to say that this book was put together more as a way to describe the emotional and psychological aspect of war rather then the actual fighting and killing. This book deals with the struggle of fighting your own friends and family in this war. I also believe it to be an account of the war as tragic and somehow made 'sacred' by the enormity of the courage, suffering, and sacrifice. If you do not win the battle or war was it even worth it?

When I first heard the title "The Killer Angels" on a handout presented to me I had no idea what to expect. The subject to Michael Shaara's book is not at all evident in the title. When I finally got my hands on the actual book itself and read through its chapters is that I realized what that title actually meant. Sharra tells of a war where it is clear that many of its men are almost fighting a war inside themselves to fight a war against there own brothers. I good example of this thought is present in a quote Sharra presented to us in the forward from Robert E. Lee. It says

With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen. I have not been able to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army….

With this quote from a letter, it is very clear that Robert E. Lee could not stand the fact that he has to fight against people from his own family and that he has to do it on his homeland. It also sounds as if this war, by many does not even want to be fought. In Monday, June , 186 Chamberlain episode this line explains why many of the men are there fighting.

Custom Essays on The Killer Angels Paper

Some of us volunteered to fight for the Union. Some came in mainly because we were bored at home and this looked like it might be fun. Some came because we were ashamed not to. Many of us came… because it was the right thing to do. All of us have seen men die. Most of us never saw a black man back home. We think on that, too. But freedom… is not just a word.

With that line in mind it sounds as if many of the men there are not even the least bit concerned with the actual meaning of the war. It sounded to me like a game of "follow the leader". If he goes then I should go as well. This line also in Chamberlain episode makes it sound as if many of the men are new to the meaning of the war or at least confused.

This is a different kind of army. If you look at history you'll see men fight for pay, or women, or some other kind of loot. They fight for land, or because a king makes them, or just because they like killing. But we're here for something new. I don't … this hasn't happened much in the history of the world. We're in an army going out to set other men free.

Since in my perspective many of the men who were brought into the war were not sure why they were there it brought to mind that during and after the war they had to be thinking to themselves "Is this fighting even worth it?" or "Why the heck am I risking my life for this?" In July , 186, episode 5 Longstreet says "They had all died for nothing and he had sent them in." It sounds to me that he fully regrets sending his men in like that. He feels that so many men had just lost their lives for something that might not have even been worth it.

It seems to me that war is blind, pathetic, and absurd as wars must always be. This line is stated in Friday, July , 186, Chamberlain episode

He sat looking down at his bloody leg, feeling the gentle wind, the heat from the south, seeing Kilrain dead on a litter, no more the steady presence. Sometimes he believed in a Heaven, mostly he believed in a Heaven; there ought to be a Heaven for young soldiers, especially young soldiers, but just as surely for the old soldier; there ought to be more than just that metallic end, and then silence, then the worms…

When I first read this line I was almost disgusted by it. It just really hit me the way they must have felt whenever they were injured or one of their collegues is lying there dead next to them. I can only imagine what it was like to wake in the morning happy that you made it through the night alive. All that could have been avoided and that is one of the biggest reasons that I feel war is blind, pathetic, and absurd. Although many are now considered hero's for their acts in war, the disputes that they war was over could have been settled in some other way and the outcome could have been even better then the one that prevailed.

Michael Shaara did a great job in portraying the feelings and emotions of war heroes to the readers of "The Killer Angels". He not only grasped the emotional aspect of the soldiers he was also able to almost dive into their minds and get a physicological view as well. It brought to view how much pain and suffering a soldier goes through for their country and why they are considered heroes.

WHAT IS MARKETING

1. Marketing is a total system of business activity designed to plan, price, promote and distribute want-satisfying products and services to markets in order to achieve the objectives of the business.

. The Three aspects of marketing are

It is a concept that makes the customer the focus of the business.

Custom Essays on Marketing

It is a function, a 'department' of the business that is responsible for all the 'marketing' activities.

It is a range of techniques from market research, product development, pricing, promotion and distribution.

Marketing is a philosophy that puts the customer at the centre of everything a business does. A business that is truly following a marketing approach will study customers to find out their needs and wants, and then organize all business activities towards providing goods and services to satisfy those needs and wants while achieving the goals of the business.

As a business function, marketing is a set of activities that plans, prices, promotes and distributes goods and services to customers in order to achieve the objectives of the business. To achieve the objectives of the business the marketing department uses a range of activities to identify what customers need and want, then plans the marketing program to deliver that good or service.

. Activities

Can you apply the main principles of marketing to individuals, places and ideas as well as to businesses? If so, how?

Individuals, places and ideas can be perceived on the same basic structure as customers. In order to truly understand a person, a place or an idea, you must first make it the subject of the business. If they are made the focus of the business, then it is possible to create a range of ideas in which will satisfy those wants or needs. Using the techniques of market research, it can be expected, like any consumer in a market, that the demands will be met.

THE ROLE OF MARKETING

1. Marketing is important to a business as it allows the business to know the needs and wants of customers. Changes in these needs and wants help managers predict future needs. By changing the business or the product to meet new needs and wants, a business can keep satisfying its customers with the right gods and services.

IDENTIFYING THE TARGET MARKET

The target market is that part of a market on which the business will focus its marketing activities.

1. There are three main ways to segment a market.

The first is 'mass marketing' where the market is seen as one single unit, a mass 'aggregate' (combined) market.

The second is 'differentiated market', where the market is seen as being made up of smaller segments.

The third is called 'concentrated marketing' where a business selects one single segment of the total market as its target market.

. A market segmented by consumer characteristics attempts to identify and describe the market according to where consumers live, age, gender, level of education, jobs, income, religion and ethnicity, socio-economic class, lifestyle and personality.

The other way of identifying and describing a target market is based on consumers' responses to the product.

'Purchase occasion' describes a market according to which situation people mainly buy a product.

'Product usage' and 'product loyalty' can also describe a market according to consumers' responses to goods and services.

It is also possible to group target markets according to their reason for buy the goods or services.

'Intermediate users' are businesses that buy goods or services to use in their own business or to make other products.

'Final users' are the customers who buy products for their own personal or household use.

. What if?

You are the marketing manager and have to suggest the best ways of segmenting the markets for your business. Choose one of the following products or services and describe how you would identify your target market rail travel.

In segmenting this market, a business needs to consider such things as location of majority of customers, jobs and their relative distance from train stations, income of customers and their traveling habits, socio-economic class and whether the different customer are willing to use the provided transport.

. Case study

Select a business and how it segments its market and the products aimed at each segment.

Nike is a company that sells not only sporting gear and footwear, but also casual wear. Each segment of its market has different styles to match fashion and to appeal to potential customers. Not only do they segment female and male, but also children, teenage and adult wear to suit age as well as gender. Each segment of its market has a different view of the market, giving each age group its own style of clothing and footwear. The women's range of clothing is quite different to the men's range of clothing. As the fashion continues to change, Nike will follow that trend to continue its production lines and profits.

The leaves fall from a distance, high above every set of life. Innocent ruffling of trees flow with every breath of the wind. Alone in your mind, you are away from the world. Instantly you start to imagine the dreams of a god. Your mind expands and you are put in a place where no one else can touch you. A trance that is so deep you feel every movement of life as if you were there. In a sense you are untouchable, unscathed. With every thought you find the history of the land around you. From the desiring dream to your life, you find no differences. Dreaming of the struggle of living, the struggle of death, and the path of which you came. You emanate through the dream, but you never apostatize. In truth you are not in a place that really exists, but you are in the depths of your mind. In The Man Made of Words, N. Scott Momaday depicts a way that the mind might be liberated. Through the use of dogmatic, eugenic, and essential means, Momaday explores the trials and tribulations of his heritage.

Dogmatic is defined as making statements without arguments or evidence. In each of our minds there is no dogmatic means for dreams or hallucinations. Momaday has neither arguments nor restraints to go into another world apart from the sophisticated one of which he had lived in. He explored his own mind with no trace of where he was

going. He experiences this by being the only one who can see and feel his tribal beginnings. In his own mind he had set himself apart from everything that existed " I had projected myself-imagined myself-out of the room and out of time. I was there with Ko-sahn…" (Momaday ). He uses this method to get into the mind of another character. A character at which is the focal point of his heritage.

Now in another sense of dogmatic terms, he has no substantial evidence of where he was going or how he really got into the out of body state and into Ko-sahns world. He uses this power to tease your mind, about who Ko-sahn really is. He clearly cannot convince every reader that he really went into a tranquil state of mind and talked to Ko-sahn. It was interesting how he went about proving the past of his heritage. Though in his mind he felt that it really happened he could not prove that this engagement really happened. In turn he describes every moment perfectly, so that we feel the real emotion set by the base of the story.

Eugenic relates to the development and improvement of a race. Momaday uses great detail to describe the eugenic part of his essay. In turn the development and improvement of his heritage are summed up into a character. He used Ko-sahn as a guide or path through the history of his tribe, and he directly correlates Ko-sahn as a language. Language plays a big role in Ko-sahn. Ko-sahn was a walking oral tradition. She was the first to begin the sun dance. Momadays heritage goes way back and the sun dance is one of the tribal dances they worshipped. Not only was she portrayed as the language and history of his tribe, but she

was also portrayed as the landscape too. For example, she stated, " Her roots ran deep into the earth, and from those depths she drew strength enough to hold still against all the

forces of chance and disorder. And she drew there from the sustenance of meaning and of mystery as well" (6). He deeply transfers the modern world with the past world all through the existence of Ko-sahn.

In our lives landscape plays an essential part of our struggle for survival. It is said that we have ruined our precious landscape for the use of expansion. Momaday states it best, " I am interested in the way that a man looks at a given landscape and takes possession of it in his blood and brain. For this happens, I am certain, in the ordinary motion of life. None of us lives apart from the land entirely; such an isolation is unimaginable" (5). We have ruined the landscape, and cannot live without it. Like his people, Momaday was brought up from the land. He states the land as a whole," They are not so high and mighty as the mountains in the Far West, and they bear a different relationship to the land around them. One does not imagine that they are distinctive in themselves, or indeed that they exist apart from the plain in any sense" (5). He realizes that his roots used to rely on the land for survival. Now in this world, that is rarely heard of.

In the end, through mind-bending schemes of dreams, N. Scott Momaday comes out closer to his own origin. Not only does he get closer to his origin but he also teaches future readers how to respect the land. He got his point across that in a state of mind you can do anything and you can go to so many depths that you have never been before. You

can learn things that other people would take a lifetime to comprehend. All you have to do is expand your mind to explore the greatest knowledge in the world your mind.
