Both diamonds and water are scarce resources. A diamond is composed solely of carbon and its formation takes many billions of years. Exposed to intense heat and pressure hundreds of kilometers below sea level, the magical objects of desire are shaped by a powerful, natural process. Water is a daily necessity to each and every one of us. We need to drink water everyday, shower, washing and basically to survive.

Why are diamonds which have relatively little use to society; so costly, yet water which is fundamental to our way of life, so inexpensive?

Adam Smith (17-170) certainly believed that water is necessary for life (we will perish without it). By contrast, diamonds have little of such utility. They are only useful for adornment. It is possible to do without diamonds entirely yet diamonds cost so much more. Smith's "paradox" as it has come to be known, highlights these two incongruous facts

1. If a product's demand is largely dependant on its usefulness, then we would expect water; being the more useful of the two; to command a higher price.

Cheap Custom Essays on Paradox of value

. Diamonds are more costly.

The scarcity of diamonds will always ensure a high marginal value because an extra pound of diamonds has valuable uses that are not currently being met. Conversely, water is tremendously abundant and thus has a high total value and a low marginal value. A mere extra gallon of water is not particularly important.

For example, we assume that a person consumes units of water but no diamonds. The fourth unit of water would gives her only 10 additional units of utility. However, the first diamond would give her 150 units of utility (the marginal utility of diamonds increases as she consumes more diamonds). Therefore, she would be willing to spend 15 times as much for a 1 carat diamond as for a unit of water.

Conclusion

Consumers clearly get more total utility from water than diamonds. The last liter of water we drink or use in the shower gives us very little marginal utility. However, the last diamond still makes a big difference. People are willing to pay more for extra diamonds than for extra water because diamonds are rare and its value is greater than water. The total utility and marginal utility for diamonds will always increase. William Jevons (185-188) clearly states- "Cost of production determines supply, supply determines final degree of utility, final degree of utility determines value." (Begg, Fischer and Dornbushch, 00, P. 71)

In view of this "paradox", it has been maintained that it is not the usefulness of an object but scarcity that determines its price. Diamonds are expensive because they are rare. Water is inexpensive because it is widely found.

It was at its peak in 148-5 with the Berlin blockade and airlift, the formation of NATO, the victory of the communists in the Chinese civil war, and the Korean War. Another intense stage occurred in 158-6 with the Cuban missile crisis, which resulted in a weapons buildup by both sides. A period of dtente in the 170s was followed by renewed hostility. Abortion has always been a very controversial issue. This can be due to the fact that people have different beliefs that are emphasized by their own religion and set of moral values. Many people believe that abortion is wrong, but they believe that is it only wrong under certain circumstances. This could be true, but is it more right to kill for a specific reason than to just do it because you made an irresponsible decision? Because of the wide spectrum of religion and various moral beliefs, there will never be a right or wrong answer to abortion. So, the only thing there is to do is take a stand.

In my opinion, to abort a baby that you are carrying as a result of unprotected sex is morally and religiously wrong. You are killing a life that God has created within you (with your assistance of course). Just like God predestined our lives, he has done the same for that unborn child as well. For a woman to interfere with what God has planned is just wrong. If you got pregnant, then it was meant for you to assist in populating the earth. If not you would be sterile, or have other fertility problems. Everything happens for a reason. When women make a decision to have unprotected sex, they should think of the consequences that could follow. So as a result of making a bad decision, it is unfair for her to try to undo history and take the baby back. Having unprotected sex was a decision that she made and when we make decisions, we enjoy the benefits of that decision, but we also have to realize and take on the consequences as human beings. To undo what has already been predestined is to interfere with faith and destiny.

In the argument for abortion, many people argue that the fetus is not a human being or does not have life. From the time a baby is conceived, we recognize it as life. So does it not become life when you decide to kill it? No, it is still a life, but one that you decided to end for whatever reason you may have. Another thing that serves as proof on the religious level is that in the bible in Leviticus Chapter 17 Verse 11, it states that "For the life of the flesh is in the blood," meaning that the blood is what gives one life. Before anyone is born, they are a fetus and the fetus is mainly composed of blood because the other organs have not developed at this early stage. This should satisfy the argument that a fetus is not actually a human life.

There are also other circumstances that should be taken into consideration. For instance, if a woman has been raped, I think she should have a choice to decide what she wants to happen. It is unfair for her to have to have a child that she did not want and was not a result of her decision but an irresponsible action of another human being. She would not be able to give that child the love and support he or she will need throughout their life. So, with that said, this should be the only reason people are allowed to have abortions. Other than that, just take responsibility for your actions and decisions and move on from there. We should not look at is as the end of the world, but the beginning of a new one.

Huckleberry Finn, is it racist or is it anti-racist? The adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a man who goes on lots of adventures with his friend Jim who he has an affinity for who is a black man. In these adventures Huck and Jim get into lots of things like they meet up with ex-cons. The book Huckleberry Finn is a racist book because it uses a lot of racist language and perpetuates stereotypes of African Americans.

Reason number one, In this quotation Huck and Jim talk about how French people talk and Jim gets angry about it. "S'pose a man was to come to you and say Polly-voo-franzy-- what would you think?" "I wouldnt think nuffin; I'd take en bust him over de head, dat is, if he werent white. I wouldnt 'low no nigger to call me dat." This quotation shows that even the black people are racist towards their own race and thats pretty racist if all that they have been taught is that black people are different. My second example is when the are on the ship wreck and they're on the boat. "It warn' the grounding that didnt keep us back but a little. We blowed out a cylinder -head." "Good gracious! anybody hurt?" "No'm. Killed a nigger." This quote shows that the people back then thought that black people weren't even people because when she asked if anybody was hurt they said no, even though that the black person was just killed. My third example is "Miss Watsons nigger, Jim, had a hair-ball as big as your fist, which had been took out of the fourth stomach of an ox, and he used to do magic with it. He said there was a spirit inside of it , and it knowed everything." In this quotation the book is trying to show that the black people are stupid and treated like they are stupid even though they are human beings and they have a brain. What had poor Miss Watson done to you that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word?" In this quote the arduous Aunt Sally is telling Huck that he is making a futile mistake by saying that how is it that you could let a nigger go. My last quote is, when they are talking in the house about how he let Jim go when he ran, Aunt Sally is an eccentric person who always changes her pattern, and Huck is like the advocate to Jim. "What did that poor old woman do to you that you could treat her so mean?" why, she tried to learn you your book, she tried to learn you your manners, she tried to be good to you every way she knowed how. thats what she done." In this quote they're saying the same thing as the last quote. She has been there for Huck, and she's done so much for him.

This book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by mark twain is racist because of the language and the stereotypes that are shown in this novel. This should be taught in school because it shows a path that the future people should not go down or use. I think that this book was a really good book. It taught me and it kept me going on it. I respect what was said because of the time frame but in these days it is good to be read so we dont fall into the racist game and also so we dont pull out the race card.

Journal Entry #1 Week , Question

Question â€Does having personal problems disqualify one from the role of helper?

Depending on one's ability to separate their personal life from their professional life determines their capability of being a good a helper. It is important to have this skill as a helper because it enhances one's ability to take on such a role. Those in need of help, who from this point on will be referred to as â€clients, require that the helper show genuine interest and empathy towards them. If such qualities are apparent in a helper, the more motivated a client will be to seek help from that person. However, if a helper seems preoccupied or uninterested, then the client will most likely feel that they are either being neglected or are not being taken seriously. Personal problems may affect the helper and clients in different ways, most of which, in my opinion, are negative.

Buy cheap social welfare journal entry term paper

For the most part, yes, personal problems may affect the helper in a negative way resulting in many consequences for the clients. For example, personal problems may cause the helper to be less focused and less sincere in attempts to help their clients. The helper might become so preoccupied with their own life problem(s) that the needs of those searching for help will not be met. Things could get worse in that the helper begins to take their problems out on their clients (i.e. projection). This definitely does not help the clients in any positive way. Another way personal problems can lead to one's inability to help a client is by creating biased opinions. For example, what if a client expresses that they are having a problem similar to the one that the helper is experiencing? Because the helper can relate to the problem, their personal views may cause persuasion in the client's decisions, which might not be in the client's best interest.

In my opinion, dealing with personal problems can be very stressful and draining. This in turn, causes one to be burnt out. If a helper is burnt out, then they are practically no help at all to their clients. Perhaps a helper can take advantage of their stress by releasing some tension at social justice rallies. For the most part, though, it is very bad to bring such tension into the workplace.

Everyone has their own personal problems, some being small and others very complex. In any case, the way one deals with their problems affects every aspect of their life and of those around them. It is very important for a helper to prioritize their clients' needs, but it is in the clients' best interest that the helper be healthy physically, mentally and emotionally. If personal problems are affecting one's ability to carry out the role of helper, then it is necessary that they take the time to attend to their own needs before anyone else's. By taking care of themselves, they will be able to take on the role of helper more efficiently.

The Pigman

The Pigman book is about a lonely old man called Mr.Pignati who has an awful

secret. Lorraine and John, two high school sophomores learn his terrible secret. Dealing

with friendship, reluctance to grow up and death. In the novel The Pigman, by Paul Zindel

Buy book The PigManGrades 9-10 term paper

the author communicates the ideas of friendship, reluctance to grow up and death.

through the literary theme.

Friendship is a key element to a healthy relationship and will contribute love and

companionship in ones life. " Lorraine and John apologize for having that party. We had

only invited two people, but those others stopped by, and before you knew it things got

out of hand. I mean, Lorraine and I will pay for everything". This quote makes me think

of friendship when John and Lorraine offer to take the Pigman to the zoo with them.

Then they pay for everything even the peanuts and the train ride to go see Bobo. John and

Lorraine even offered to help clean up but Mr. Pigman turned that offer down. I feel that

Mr. Pigman was still mad at them but John and Lorraine showed that they were sorry in

many ways, I think that is true friendship.

Dealing with tragedy and hardship, adolescence can often lead to lose of innocence

where one can learn to cope with life as they approach adulthood. " Pignati at the door.

He was just standing there looking down at me, and there was no smile on his face".

When John and Lorraine had the party at the Pigman's house when he was sick, it showed

that John and Lorraine had not grown up yet. Mr. Pigman couldn't trust them yet. At

least they offered to help clean up which showed some maturity on their part. I feel that

John and Lorraine are reluctant to grow up because they had that party at the Pigman's

house and I conclude that they are not ready to be left alone.

One's life should not deteriorate because of the death of a love one, instead one's

life should become stronger due to that experience. " I stayed until the ambulance doctor

said that the Pigman was dead." This quote made me think of death because Pigman died

from Bobo's death. I feel that the stress of John and Lorraine's party also contributed to

Pigman's death. The fact that Pigman died right after Bobo's death is really weird. They

must of been friends. I conclude that if John and Lorraine had not had the party it would

of been less stress on Pigman. It is impossible to say whether or not Pigman would of

died or not after Bobo's death.

I conclude that my three topics of friendship, reluctance to grow up and death are

all about choices that John, Lorraine and the Pigman made and how these choices affect

others. John and Lorraine showed their friendship to the Pigman by offering to help clean

up because they had a party at his house. By having the party at Pigman's house without

his permission, John and Lorraine show their immaturity and reluctance to grow up. If

there had been no party or if Bobo had not died then maybe Pigman might not have died.

I have had my work experience in a design warehouse. It looked like a big house with loads of widows. Was I expected to use apple Mac computers but in fact I got more then I expected. I learn many things and how working people act and I gained insights into the warehouse. I hope to go back to this firm when I leave school or I hope to do this kind of work when I am older. They offered me job but only when I have A-levels. They have said they will pay for my university. I hope to get more knowledge in I.T and how working people behave.

I was worried about fitting in on my first day. I arrived on time to give a good impression. In the job I was the youngest person and a trainee but they did not care. I had to be confident again. I understood the instructions and if I did not understand them they explained again I was not embarrassed.

I enjoy working with Sarah one of my colleagues. she was a nice person she work there for three year. Most of the people who work there work there for more then three year. But There was a girl on work experience that I got on will with she was my age and now were good friends her name is Hanna. And the only person that I did not like was the embroidery manager called jenny. She always picketed on me.

Buy shakespeare term paper

On my first day I went to reception where the manager took me to his office. The manager was a big man that looks like he was 8 and he was wearing a suit. I had to wait. They have a meeting every Monday morning. For the first day I was in the design department where I helped the designer design an Internet site for the firm that was colourful with lodes of picture. I learned more about computers than. I have in any lesson. We worked until 1.00 o'clock then we had a two-hour break. Then we worked and finished at 05.00 o'clock.

I hoped that it would be good but on the first day it was not as I hoped it would be. As the days went by work got better and better. I worked in the designing department for the first -days and I was in printing for days, in the embroidery department and in the backing department. I was hoping to be in the design department more but instead I was in the backing and embroidery.

My three days in the backing department was a good experience. I leaned how a group of people work together without a teacher. My three days embroidery I worked on 6 machines at one time and on the first day I did over 00 hats. My two-days in printing was not as good as I expected but it was all right. Designing was better.

I think I worked to the best of my ability. And if I had to do that all over again I would like to have more time on the computer and in the backing. I think I chose the right job placement because I dressed correctly, was on time and I was confident. On every Friday they paid me £5. It came to £50. They gave me a bag full of different things they designed. This work has inspired me to work hard at school so that I get good A-levels then I will be accepted into this firm for a permanent position. A good report was all I wanted and two meet new people.

Religious freedom has been an issue throughout the world all through history. Since religion existed there have been conflicts and persecution of other because they had different beliefs. Religious freedom in the British North American colonies prior to 1700 was important to a very large extent because there was so little.

First there were the Puritans. They were persecuted in Europe, but were one of the dominant faiths in the British colonies in North America. The Puritans believed in religious uniformity so of course this led to harsh laws against anyone who didn't follow the basic Puritan principles. People such as Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were expelled because they spoke out against the Puritans. They also imposed harsh punishments that went as far as death sentences for those who went against them.

The Jews were another group that made their way to the Americas. The first group of Jews to arrive in the Americas was a small shipload of refugees from Dutch Brazil. Jews endured many hardships with religious prosecution. In some places death penalties were placed on Jews for the sole reason that they were Jewish. Many of these penalties also applied to atheists.

Quakers were another prominent faith in the British North American colonies. Quakers are sometimes referred to as "radical Puritans." This extremely religious group of people was persecuted severely in England so many of them migrated to the colonies. They did still face some religious persecution but they did create many prosperous towns as well as having Pennsylvania to themselves.

Custom writing service can write essays on The extent to which religious freedom existed in the colonies prior to 1770.

Roman Catholics were one of the most prosecuted religions in the British colonies. They were forced to leave England because of extreme persecution. After landing in Maryland they slowly became a smaller and smaller minority. Once the Glorious Revolution ended Roman Catholics were deprived of many rights such as the right to vote, hold office, or worship publicly.

Since the first colonists arrived the struggle for religious freedom began in the Americas. The different religious conflicts affected to a large degree the way many of the colonies developed. Such things such as the Salem Witch Trials show the religious tension in the colonies. Because of the lack of toleration in the colonies such as the harsh persecution of Catholics and the death penalty placed on Jews and Atheists as well as people who just disagreed it led to the different developments of the colonies.

There was this one time that I wish that I would have listen to my parents. I wish that I would have listen to my father. It was a school night and I wanted to go out with my friends. My father had told me not to go because it was raining and I had school the next day. But as I argued with him to go out he kept emphasizing that was raining and not to go. But me being hard headed that I am, I left the house anyway. It was not even ten minutes that I had left the house that I had got into a car accident and wreaked my car. The tires on my car had spun out because of the wet road into the sidewall of a bridge. Now if I would have listen to my father, none of that would have happened. That ten minutes of not listening caused me many problems, such as I did not have a car, I had no money and I had to get a new car.

For instance, I was out of a car for about three weeks. Those three weeks seemed so long because when I wanted to get up to leave the house or go somewhere I could not. Therefore, I would have wait until my mother was done with her car to leave or I would have to have one of my friends come pick me up. Also my mother would have to take me

to and from work. But this was not the only problem I had because I did not listen.

Cheap University Papers on have you ever

Another problem that I had was the money issue. I did not have the money to pay to get the car fixed. So therefore, I had to ask my father in which I disobeyed in the first place to let my borrow money to fix the car. So then I had to work extra hard at work and work more days just to pay him back. But those were just the least of my problems.

The other problem that had occurred because of my car accident was that they could not fully fix my car. The frame of the car was bent and the mechanic had said that it totaled but was still drivable for awhile. Well keeping that in mind my car broke down about two months later when the tire fell off my car when I was driving because rotor broke because the frame was bent. Therefore, to car the car fix again it would cost me more money to get fix then what the car was even worth. Also the car would still not be reliable because the frame was bent due to the first accident. In which would have never happen if I would have just listened.

If I would have listen to my father in the first place and never left when he told me to I would have never had any of these problems. So in the end I realized that having the car accident was a good thing because I learned a lesson. That parents say and do things for a reason and because they love you.

Short Summary of „Pygmalion", written by Bernard Shaw

After a downpour of summer rain two gentlemen meet while seeking shelter under a portico; Professor Higgins is a scientist for phonetics, Colonel Pickering reveals himself to be a specialist for Indian dialects. Higgins soon takes notice of an ordinary flower girl with a strongly developed Cockney accent and takes notes as she is speaking. When Higgins is accused of being a police informant he proves his abilities in guessing correctly the bithplace of several people by identifying their dialects. This leads to a bet between Colonel Pickering and Higgins, who announces that he will transform an ordinary girl (who has not received any education whatsoever) into a graceful, poised lady whom the high society will think of as a duchess.

As the flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, arrives at Higgins' residence the next day, Pickering offers to cover the costs of the experiment and the lessons begin. During the next few months Higgins develops a relationship with Eliza that is far more complexe than any teacher/student relationship is supposed to be. He becomes a mentor for Eliza, and is fascinated by the change of her attitude and the success of his experiment. Eliza on the other hand develops feelings for her mentor and host. The first time Eliza is presented to high society in London she is being introduced to the Eynsford Hills and their son Freddy. Instantly he is fascinated by her beauty and falls for her. The final test Eliza has to pass is a fancy party that is being thrown by a well known ambassador in London. She is beautifully dressed and makes a stunning appearance as her accent is completely gone and her manners are the ones of a lady. After the party Higgins and Pickering congratulate themselves and completely forget about the girl. Eliza's feelings are hurt when she learns that she was never more than an experiment and that the "game is over". When she accuses Higgins of being irresponsible and insensitive, he is bewildered and leaves in a fury. Eliza resolves to seek advice from Mrs. Higgins but meets Freddy on her way.In the ending of this scene Freddy and Eliza kiss. The next morning Higgins arrives at his mother's house with the intention to tell her about Eliza. The old lady chides him and Pickering, who has also come, for playing with Eliza's feelings and treating her like a toy. Finally Eliza enters and thanks Pickering for always treating her like a lady.

When she is left alone with Higgins he begs her to come back since he has gotten used to having her around and has grown fond of her. She tells him about Freddy and shows that she is not, in any way, dependent on Higgins. He cannot help but admire her intelligence and self confidence, the tramp is now a real lady. As she leaves for her father's wedding, Higgins shouts after her and begs her to stay but the audience is left guessing wether she will return to Wimpole Street or settle wih Freddy.

The poems that I have read were ¡°Lot¡¯s wife¡±, ¡°Richard Cory¡± and ¡°warren Pryor¡±. Those poems reminded me how our day-to-day lives affect what we think and the ways we act. How and why lot and his wife, Richard Cory and ¡°the people on the pavement¡±, Warren Pryor and his parents looked the world and their lives diversely.

When we read ¡°Lot¡¯s Wife¡±, it is easy to find out that Lot was a saint. He looked the world and his life through the God¡¯s words, all of his every day life was prayer and communicating with God. Just like what we read in this poem said ¡°It is easy for eyes that have always turned to heaven not to look back.¡± Lot could easily obey what God had told him and headed himself to ¡°Zoar¡± without looking back. It was all because he was not really live his life in that town, all his spiritual life was related to God. On the other hand, his wife lived in a normal life. It was her who did all the house work, fed the children, and dealt with all the problems that happened in their realistic life with her neighbors and friends. That was the reason she could not help herself to look back. She might think that her whole life was ended when the town was damaged, so it was not so important if she could get to ¡°Zoar¡±.

Richard Cory had everything; he was well-knowledge, rich, honorable and handsome. Just like ¡°the people on the pavement¡± thought ¡°he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place.¡± That summer night when Richard Cory committed the suicide, he left such a big question to ¡°the people on the pavement¡± that was ¡°what was the purpose of lives¡±. They thought Richard¡¯s life was their dreams, but it was exploded. The author never mentioned about why Richard Cory chose to die, from my points of view, maybe his life too perfect, it made him felt so empty and boring. But those kinds of stuff would never seem understandable for the people who struggle for their living for every single day.

When Warren Pryor felt ¡°like a young bear inside his teller¡¯s cage¡±, and ¡°aching with empty strength and throttled rage.¡± His parents thought ¡°he was saved from their thistle-strewn farm and its red dirt.¡± This is the most ironic part of this poem, Warren Pryor did what in his parents¡¯ eyes was good for him, and left himself in those painful dissatisfaction. His parents thought they made him away from the hardest life in ¡°the stony fields¡±, but they would never thought about it was not what Warren¡¯s choice at all, and how much that Warren loved their farm as a place where he had grown up and belonged to.

Help with essay on Lot's Wife

In conclusion, those three poems mentioned us a lot about people in different religions, different social classes and different generations have totally different viewpoints about their lives and dreams. It is hard for one to understand another because the people¡¯s concept of lives are depended what they experienced and what they learned.

I believe change occurs overtime time through positive and negatives on

one's life. It is very significant aspect of people's lives and can have various results.

It occurs when a person feels disatisfied and has a desires to move on. "If you wantto make a change, you've got to do it from inside, like I am doing." Since I was a

child, I was forced to follow the paths and course my parents have choosen for me.

As I grew older, I am given more choices and can now can choose the path my

heart desires. I see myself as Rita struggling finding "who I am".

Rita, experienced a major change in her life when she decided to created

"freedom , choice and room to breathe" to herself by improving on her education.

Her determination was unstoppable and would even "bringing her old world down"

to accomplish it. I defenite agree on what Rita beliefs. Improving my education will

definitely increase a person's success in life to able to "choose better song to sing" .

Like Rita, I feel change can be very difficult and requires courage to do it. I feel so

much pressured on going to University because on how my parents put many

expectations on me - "Ronaldo, try you're hardest to get good marks to get in a

decent University because someday you will start a family and you have to able to

support them by your own".

After Trish died, Rita experienced major lose in her life. Experience is a big

aspect of life. This made her stronger and more possitive in life. I also experience

the same thing after my friend left to live to a different city. I experienced change in

my feelings and beliefs that I never experienced before and it deepen things that

help me able to see life. I able to take the full meaning -"Don't take things for

granted or someday you will regret it" through that experience. My outlook to life is

different from when I was before. It discover myself seeking the meaning of life

and wonders what course life would take me. Rita is wanting for this experience

from the beginning - "Ive begun to find me and its great y know, it is Frank. It

might sound selfish but all I want for the time bein is what Im findin inside me."

Learning literature will deepens the meanings of things in life and can bring

happiness into your life - "Something did happen to me, it was fantastic. Look

Macbeth it was. I bought the book. It took me head. I thought it was dead borin but

it wasnt. It was electric." Rita's major goal was not to earn more money when she

went to University. She wanted to change her dull life to become a person who has

many interesting things to say. She wanted to have intellectual conversations with

people and to fit in. I have experiences in high school that I wanted to be someone

who is witty , looks handsome, and also can make everybody laugh. But I found

that becoming someone else is not worth it. Yourself is who really are, "I am proud

myself - my culture , my friends and my family." I know change can be positive but

this is what god made me and I am proud of it.

Im about to take up a position which is going to be deamed by some,

if not all, as a terrible stand to take. As a matter of fact, if anyone were

to agree with me on ths subject, Id be surprsed. For you see, rather than

arguing from the postion of suicide being an unjustified and inane way to

Custom writing service can write essays on Suicide Solution

die, I shall argue the other point. That being suicide does have its merits.

Before you people start screaming, hear my case out. Most people

argue that nothing justifies the taking of someones life. Yet what makes

life so valuable? Why do people cling to it so? All we consist of is a bunch

of carbon atoms, bound together to form an exoskeleton, organs, and tissue.

In this light, there really is not much to life. Out of the 5 billion who

inhabit the planet, very few of them shall emerge to be true world leaders.

The rest will just lead a mediocre life of work and little play.

The taking of ones life can be argued from a populistic view as well.

It makes little sense to preserve life in an over populated world. True, one

less person here on there will not make a large dent. Yet if everyone who

attempts or had attempted suicide were not stopped, the impact would be

noticed.

Another popular argument for stoppers, people who want to prevent

suicide, is that nothing can be bad enough. Yet how do they know this? They

do not have to put up with the same stuff the suicide victim does everyday.

How could they possibly know what the potential suicide victim feels. Just

as a severely burned victim may wish to be allowed to die in peace, the

suicide victim wishes the same. To die in peace with no argument from

others.

The argument of look at the people you will hurt also does not

hold. Imidiate family members will be the only ones to suffer any great pain.

Friends will go on with thier lives and in time forget about the death.

Imidiate family too will forget the loss in time. Although it will take most

considerably longer for them than it will for friends.

Finaly, the argument of suicide being selfish is hard to grasp.

Selfish in whose eyes? Certainly not the eyes of the victim. To them, they

consider it selfish of others to try and preserve their life. Again, the

argument of the stoppers dont know what the victim has to go through. They

are not the ones enduring the pain.

Religious people also crop up into the debate. Catholics claim that

for someone to committ suicide sneds their soul straight to Hell. In many

religions, suicide is considered taboo. However why is this so? Why should it

be looked upon as disgracefull, when some religions claim death the be the

reward for people after their time on earth is done.

Suicide is an issue which should be examined at by all angles. Not

just from the angle that it is wrong. End of debate. Rather it should be

looked at from the point of view that yes for some people, they should be

allowed to die in peace.

This document is an excerpt from Mary Boykin Chesnut's diary. She was the daughter of Mary Boykin and Stephen Miller, who was one of South Carolina's chief political figures. She married James B. Chesnut, Jr., whose father was one of the state's major landowners. After James' election in 1858, Mary swiftly launched herself into the social crowd of other southern politician's wives. At the time, the Union had first aimed for secession in South Carolina, where Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor remained under Union control. South Carolina was focused on confiscating federal property and therefore declared their refusal to let the Union control the fort. On April 4th, President Lincoln decided to hold Union property in the South and ordered that Fort Sumter and Fort Pickens in Florida be reequipped. In response, South Carolina and the Confederate government decided to resist this decision. In 1860, the Chesnuts had left the nation's capital to return to South Carolina. There, James played a chief role in the state's succession. This excerpt from Chesnut's diary offers a skillful description of Charleston just before and during the attack of Fort Sumter.

The excerpt starts off with a date of April 1th. It describes the night before being one of the "merriest and maddest" dinner parties yet. It continues that Anderson did not surrender by four and therefore fire was opened. It also states that Colonial Chesnut was ordered to open fire on one side of the fort if Anderson was persistent. She describes springing out of her bed. She then hurried downstairs with the crowd of people rushing about. She also explains that her husband was rowing on the dark bay, at this point, amongst the firing. Everyone was also wondering why Fort Sumter had not fired a shot. The next entry in the document is from the following day. She writes that no one was hurt after all and that Fort Sumter had been on fire. Anderson had also not yet silenced any guns. She describes the firing making it impossible to have regular meals and that some of the people were so anxious and miserable they did not leave their bed. Most of the women had much faith, and she quotes them saying that "God is on our side… oh course, he hates the Yankees…" On the other hand, she describes the black servants not even acting as if anything was going on. She questions whether they are "solidly stupid or wiser than they are; silent and strong, biding their time?" Some of her further diary entries go on to explain that the slaves were a large force and that white southerners feared they would join on the side of the North. She writes of the great anxiety over a Union attack that resulted in blacks being lined up and coldly shot by their masters. She repetitively continued to write her entries on the many injustices against blacks as a result of the fear of war.

Trifles was a play based on a real life tragedy. A tragedy in which a man was found strangled in his bed while the wife unknowingly sleeps. The author, Susan Glaspell, was on staff at the Des Moines Daily News when the murdered occurred. The play is said to draw upon a detective's story. However, the drama was not only written for mystery but was also written to show how women were treated around her time.

The story begins when the sheriff, his wife Mrs. Peters, the County Attorney Mr. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Hale returns to the Wrights farmhouse looking for evidence. Mr. Hale was asked by the County Attorney to walk through, what had happen yesterday morning when he had arrived at the house. Mr. Hale stated that he came to the house and Mrs. Wright was sitting in her rocker, looking strange rocking back and forth. When Mr. Hale asked if he could see her husband ( Mr. Wright ) she said no but when asked if he was home. She had said yes but that he was dead up stairs with a rope around his neck.

The next few minutes of conversation was between Mr. Henderson and Mrs. Hale. Mr. Henderson was making side remarks about Mrs. Wright's housekeeping, while Mrs. Hale tried to defend not only he but also farm wives in general. The men had gone up stairs in attempt to gather more evidence. The women were down stairs collecting some of Mrs. Wright's personal belongings to take to her in jail. While searching for these items they find a dead bird with a broken neck wrapped in silk in her sewing box but the women decided not to show this new evidence to the men.

By writing this play Susan Glaspell was not only trying to show the world a murder but was trying to show how women in general were treated during her time. Trifles was a way to express her-self. So the world could see how women were being treated as a whole. If you read the play there are hints with-in it, which shows the woman's place in society.

Custom writing service can write essays on Trifles

One example of this is when Mr. Henderson was making snide remarks about the cleanliness of the house. It's not always the woman's place to clean the house and that was one of the finer points Glaspell was trying to make.

Another example of this is when the women were talking downstairs while the men were upstairs gathering evidence. Mr. Hale had made the comment; how Mrs. Wright use to were pretty clothes and sing in the church but no longer did these things after marriage. I believe that her husband made her stop doing these things that she had loved to do before marriage. The killing of the bird was just the snapping point for Mrs. Wright. I believed that she did kill her husband in a way to escape his abuse mentally. In Mrs. Wright's time it wasn't a women's place to speak up or even against her husband. The wife was basically a puppet at her husband's disposal.

Glaspell is a very emotional and movating writer, which made good points around her time. She was one of the few people who have tried to pave the way for women, as well as open up the eyes of not just her community but the eyes of the world as a whole.

Internet Relationships

The Internet is changing the way people communicate with one another, helping people to become more confident. With the new confidence it is easier for the "shy to be outgoing, and 'nerdy' sophisticated"(Turkle 7). Through the Internet came the creation of windows, allowing people to play with different personalities at the same time, permits the person to create as many identities as they feel needed.

Due to the Internet, many people have created a new confidence in themselves knowing they can act in any sort of way and not see the reaction of others. This new confidence has helped people to become comfortable enough with themselves for online dating. Online dating helps alleviate the fears of rejection in some, allowing those people to share more about themselves and create more in depth relationships. Although it may alleviate the fears for some, others feel the need to embellish themselves a little bit to appear more attractive or intelligent to others online. While it seems that being online is bad, it is good for people like Meghan Daum, author of Virtual Love, who have fears of talking to people face to face or even on the telephone. Being online, is able to "provide a useful antidote for communication anxieties"(Daum 55). Unfortunately in some cases, it is taken to far. In the case of Daum, the Internet and her new confidence from online dating became everything, "there was no outdoors, no social life, no weather… only the computer screen" (57). Luckily enough Daum was able to realize that she " had invested so heavily in a made-up character" (57) and got out of the relationship. While the Internet helped Meghan to gain confidence as a person, it failed to fix her problem and did not relieve her anxieties for facing people face to face.

Through the Internet, many people have gained confidence, whether it was through their natural selves or the character they made up. With the invention of windows, communication with one another has been affected. "Windows suggests a distributed self that exists in many worlds and play many roles at the same time" (Turkle 7). People are now using windows to play with different parts of themselves to fit their different moods. "I'm different in different chats they bring out different things in me"(7). Windows plays people personalities and their identity roles creating personalities disorders.

Through the Internet, many people have changed themselves. Some gian confidence and are able to date online, while most end up creating alternate personalities. However, online dating did not help to alleviate the fears of those that are afraid of face to face contact with others. Online dating helped people to act anyway they wanted that reflected their mood not having to see the affect of this first hand. Windows helped through this because people were able to act out the personalities they felt needed for that time period.

The Massacre at Tiananmen Square

It was a bloody massacre. The Massacre of Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, China, that is. It was boycott against the government. The people wanted freedom. They wanted democracy. They wanted to know why Hu Yaobang was dismissed in January 187 (NMIS.org Chronology Page 1). They were angry that students who wanted to know why he was dismissed were arrested (Inside China Today, Part One). All these facts were reasons for the Massacre of Tiananmen Square, in which, according to Chinas Red Cross, two thousand six hundred people were killed, and 7,000 were wounded (Inside China Today, Part Five). The question is did the government have the right to use force to stop the protest? The answer is yes because the people were warned, and were trying to change something that would be very hard to change.

Tiananmen Square was a place of protest in April, May, and June of 18 (NMIS.org). Students from Beijing University, as well as many other schools, were boycotting against the government. They would protest at Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is one of the largest public squares in the world, which has an area of over one hundred acres (Encyclopedia Britannica). In this large area, massive amounts of brutalities took place. Large tanks crushed eleven students, and many other students were shot and killed.

The people were warned to stay away from Tiananmen Square. Specifically, on June rd, at 1000 P.M., the loudspeakers at Tiananmen Square cautioned the students to stay at home (Inside China Today, Part Five). Also, if that didnt warn the people enough, the fact that so many people were dying should have told them that it just wasnt worth it.

One of the main reasons for all of the protests is because of communism. The students did not want communism, but would rather have a democracy. This is not the way to fix communism. It would have been easier to gather up all of these students and take them to the leader to see if he can change his ways. When the people go on protest, they get their point across. Especially if there are that many. They dont have to take it so far that the government has to use force to stop them. Either way, they got their point across, but they would have got their point across in a non-violent way.

The government had only one choice to stop the protest at Tiananmen Square by force. They tried to negotiate, but that didnt work. They enforced martial law, but that was a joke to the people (Inside China Today, Part Three). The people were warned. They shouldnt have kept protesting. Also, they were trying to change something that would be very hard to change. For sure there were other people who favored communism who would have went on strike if it changed to a democracy, which would pretty much be impossible anyway

Summer Book Report

Incident at Hawk's Hill

1. The book I did my report on is called Incident at Hawk's Hill by Allan W. Eckert. It was published by Little, Brown & Company in 171.

. The main characters in this book were Benjamin MacDonald, Esther and William MacDonald, John MacDonald, a female badger, and George Burton. Benjamin MacDonald is a six-year-old child that can communicate with animals. Esther and William MacDonald are Ben's parents. John MacDonald is Ben's brother. George Burton is a neighbor of the MacDonald's. He is a trapper.

Custom Essays on Incident at Hawks Hill

. The book was a non-fictional story with slight fiction added in.

4. The story is about a six-year-old named Benjamin MacDonald. Ben had an odd relationship with his family, but mostly with his father in the sense that he did not talk or communicate in any way with his him. He was a very shy boy who loved animals, he could communicate with them and he could get close to them. The animals somehow knew that he was no threat to them.

One day Ben was watching a bird hunt his prey (a mouse). Ben was just exploring and looking at the bones when he heard a loud squeaky voice. He looked over and saw a badger. Then Ben found a nest of four baby mice and started feeding them to the badger one by one. Ben touched the badger and the she ran away.

When Ben got home he was happy. At dinner his Father was curious, so he asked if he had a good time and Ben nodded his head yes. Bens mother asked what happened and he said he saw a badger. Bens parents did not look happy. They asked George Burton (a neighbor) to catch the badger so that it would not hurt Ben.

The female badger was hunting one night when she got caught in one of George Burton's traps. She escaped, but in the process she had to bite off one of her toes. When she got back to the den all her pups were dead except for one which died shortly after.

One day Ben was wandering around like usual and forgot which direction he came from. He spent multiple moments thinking. Then he realized he was lost, all alone, and away from civilization with no food or water. He started walking in which direction he believed was toward his house. It started raining so he looked for shelter. He noticed that there was an animal-made tunnel and he climbed into it.

He awoke the next morning with a badger by his feet. Ben noticed it was the same badger that he gave the mice. The badger gave Ben some chicken that it killed. The badger helped Ben survive for two weeks until his brother John found him.

5. What I enjoyed about this book is the garrulous details of the setting and the characters. What I did not like about this book is that is was boring and had no action.

6. If I were to change this story, I would make it so that nobody ever found Ben and he and the badger lived together for the rest of their lives.

"You do as you experienced."

Employing artistic and literary devices towards the equivalent goal to reproduce forms of imagination to which the mind will recur with pleasure, a binding link between art and literature is established. A proof to this link is that both art and literature reflect the social context in which they were produced.

The social context in which an artist lives in heavily influences his or her painting. During the Renaissance, an age that spanned the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, Western art reached its pinnacle, and although Michelangelos work embodies its grandest artistic achievements, no life embodies the Renaissance as grandly and completely than that of Leonardo da Vincis. He more than any other individual then earned the title Universal man. It was not un-rare for Renaissance artists to engage themselves in various intellectual interests; Leonardo, however, was unparalleled in both the breadths of his interests and the thoroughness with which he studied them. Renaissance works of art existed largely for their own sake, as objects of ideal beauty and pertaining to the human soul, mind and body. Leonardo clearly displayed this belief in his many extant drawings, which reveal his brilliant draftsmanship and his mastery of the anatomy of humans, animals, and plant life. In addition, Marc Chagall was profoundly affected by his home, background, and religion. In one of his notorious painting, I and the Village, Chagall's childhood Russian Jewish community is evidently manifested. Clearly, because his Jewish background effected him greatly Chagall chose to create a replica of his very own Jewish village. Both in Leonardo and Chagall's paintings the time- period they experienced is reflected in their paintings, whether through the theme, background, or their artistic devices.

Furthermore, in literature the social context effects an authors method of writing just the same. The life of Edgar Allan Poe was, like so many of his tales, short, poignant, and strangely haunted. From a very young age he experienced many deaths and consequently began to drink alcohol. Due to this fact, Poe's writings became very daunting, with a common theme of death. For example, in his short story "The Cask of Amontillado" not only is the whole plot surrounded with alcohol (a cask of amontillado) his theme of revenge and death is equally portrayed. Additionally, Mark Twain lived during the Reconstruction, the period directly after the civil war which failed because although federalists tried to change the mind-set of many to prejudice the outlook on racism never did change. In Twain's book Huck Finn, Jim a black slave constantly works to free himself but all the while he is truly free through the will of his owner. Mark twain shows this irony of trying to free an already free man similar to the irony taking place during the Reconstruction. The federalists tried to show that all blacks are equal when really any human should have equal rights.
