My mother told me to always look on the bright side. I heard through the grapevine that the boss is about to abandon ship. Someone else in the department is airing dirty laundry in an attempt to get the boss's job. Who, is the question of the day. John is a good guy but is all talk and no action. There has always been bad blood between Mike and me, but with his back against the wall would he become a back stabber? Stephanie has always been the belle of the ball, everyone likes her. Eric is bigger than life and always has a smile for everyone. He cares more about his bike than his job. But it is better to be safe than sorry, they should both be watched. Keith is the brown noser of brown nosers, he would say anything to get ahead as long as he didn't get caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Maybe if I dangle a carrot in front of Brad he would tell all. He usually knows where the skeletons are buried. Bill is always full of himself, but he isn't really a glutton for punishment, I don't think he wants that job. The funny thing is that they all think that I am jockeying for the job, but the grass is always greener on the other side, and I am happy where I am. Richard seems to be grasping at straws, trying to draw attention away from his past mistakes. Aaron is the one who deserves the position, but he's something of a loose canon and doesn't really play well with others. Susan is madder than a hatter and couldn't be trusted with anything more stressful than her current position. Richard is lower than a snake's belly, he could be burning some bridges to get ahead. Roy had some success with his last project and has been milking that for all it's worth, hoping that it would lead to something like this. There is more to Dan than meets the eye, he always seems like a glass is half full kind of guy. Steve is slow as molasses in January, everything would come to a halt with him at the wheel. Jeff likes to toot his own horn, he isn't the type to rat on someone else. Brett likes to think of himself as the top banana, but he would need to turn over a new leaf to do this job. Oh well, another day another dollar. To be honest with you, we would be lucky if it is someone from the outside.

Edith Newbold Jones was born in New York City in 186. She was the youngest child and only daughter of a socially prominent family. She was educated privately, in which case she spent most of her childhood traveling with her family in Europe, mostly in Italy and France. In 1885 at the age of twenty-three she did what she was expected to do and she married Edward "Teddy" Wharton, an affable Boston banker. The Whartons began their married life in New York and were soon part of the New York social scene, dividing their time between New York, Newport, and Bar Harbor. Later they built a home in Lenox, Massachusetts. But for Edith Wharton the year's high point was the couple's annual trip to Europe.

Wharton was twenty-nine before she sold her first short story. Her first novel, The valley of Decision, set in eighteenth-century Italy, was published in 10, when she was forty. It was in The House of Mirth, (105), however, that she found her true subject the tightly structured world of New York society into which she was born and which she observed with clarity and sympathetic irony. The Age of Innocence (10), for which she won the Pulitzer Prize, is an in-bred world she both mocked and celebrated.

An ambitious writer, in addition to her novels Wharton wrote masterful short fiction, ghost stories, and New England winter's tale, the grim novella Ethan Frome (111). She was also knowledgeable writer on such subjects as gardens, landscaping, furnishings, and travel. Divorced from Teddy Wharton in 11, she spent almost no time in the United States, preferring Paris and her wide circle of friends, among them Henry James, who was a literary influence as well as a traveling companion, and Bernard Berenson. Wharton's surroundings where important to her and her personal wealth made possible the ordered and stylish life she craved.

During World War I, Wharton remained in France and worked with refugees and the wounded, for which the French government warded her the Legion of Honor in 116. She died at Saint-Bricesouis-Foret, France, in 17.

The Literary Merit of Judith

Finding a "good" story in the Bible is a hard thing to come by. Many of the books are filled with constant repetitions that bog the flow of the story and seem to never get to the point of the book. The book of Judith is a work of fiction no doubt, but it is one of the best examples of a literary work in the Bible. The Book of Judith's plot is so consistent; it is assumed that one author wrote it. A feature not many books of the Bible can claim. For a story to have literary merit it must meet a few certain criteria, namely, a good flow, a good versus evil theme, and a moral.

For a story to have good flow it must have a certain consistency that allows a reader to easily follow from one main point to another. It is believed that the Book of Judith had only one author. That special quality, one that not many books from the Bible can boast, is a key factor in making the Judith story flow with ease. The Book of Judith opens with an in depth plot summary and set up the major themes of the narrative. The story begins with a quick and effective introduction to the main dilemma of the book. "It was the twelfth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled over the Assyrians in the great city of Nineveh…King Nebuchadnezzar made war against King Arphaxad" (Jdt 1.1-1.6). This introduction goes on to tell of how Nebuchadnezzar oppressed many peoples and declared that he was a god, and everyone should worship only him. He sent out messengers to "all who were in Samaria and its towns, and beyond the Jordan as far as Jerusalem and Bethany and Chelous and Kadesh, and the river of Egypt…and as far as the boarders of Ethiopia" (Jdt 1.-1.10). These people would not worship him though and Nebuchadnezzar became very angry and swore that he would take revenge on all of these peoples. This decree sets up the entire plot of this book and it develops further once Judith is introduced in chapter eight.

In chapter eight Judith is introduced as the epitome of everything a Jewish woman should be. "She is…beautiful, well-connected, and devoted to God and her late husband" (AP ).

Is America's culture infatuated with violence? Most people today think so just by the violence allowed in our homes and our everyday lives. We allow violence in our surroundings every day. The majority of violence in our homes and lives stems from video games, movies, and television shows.

One perfect example of how American's are infatuated with violence is through video games. Over the last decade they have become an integral part of American culture. Games such as "Quake" and "Unreal" include bombs blowing up, guns blasting away, and killing the opponent, while seeing their blood splatter across the screen in order to win the game. Still gamers can't wait for more games to come out with even more gore and violence.

America's infatuation with violence can also be seen in today's movies. They are louder, bloodier, and more anatomically precise than ever before. A prime example is a movie called "Hannibal" that depicts a psychopath, who murders and then consumes his victim's body parts in explicit and gruesome details, not necessarily in that order either. Moviegoers still look forward to the next movie and the adrenaline rush they receive from being scared speechless or the occasional intake of breath.

My final example of America's infatuation with violence is Television in the home. Any night of the week, the average viewer can see levels of violence approaching, even exceeding the Roman Gladiator's games. It brings hitting, kicking, stabbings, shootings, and dismemberment right into our homes. Television programs such as "Law and Order" or "C.S.I. Miami" depict district attorneys or medical investigators trying to find out who killed someone and how the violent act occurred, with sights, sounds, and special effects that often jar people more than the real thing.

Write your Violence in Our Homes research paper

Violence has always been a part of the human condition because of our sinful nature (Rom. ). American culture is infatuated with violence more so today than our previous generations. Although we could prevent it from becoming part of our lives we first have to admit how infatuated we truly are with violence today.

English Coursework

We have looked at several World War I poems by Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and also a poem by Rupert Brooke. I will be looking at a total of four poems, which are "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen, "Does it matter?" by Siegfried Sassoon, Disabled by Wilfred Owen and "The Redeemer" by Siegfried Sassoon. I will be looking at these poems because they convey strong points, which for many people at the time, describe "real war" and not people's perceptions of it.

"Dulce et Decorum Est" is probably renowned as being one of the strongest protest poems towards war. This poem tells the story of soldiers who are returning from the front line and who are on their way back to the camps at night when they are attacked by a gas bomb. It presents the fumbling way that the men have to find and put on their gas masks. However, one man doesn't and it describes how he drowns in his own blood and bodily fluids. Then the way that he is thrown into the back of a wagon and the way that his body has frozen in the position in which he died, with the expression on his face showing how much pain he was in. This poem uses very strong (insert examples) and powerful words to describe the scene wan Wilfred Owen's feelings on war. The strong and powerful words also put across the fact that the men are not dying "in glory" on the front-line (Quote and Explain). It also emphasises the fact that these images will haunt the men for the rest of their lives. (Insert quote from 1st draft). It also shows that there are no proper facilities for the wounded and the dead cannot be properly dealt with.

"Does it matter?" is really a poem that asks questions. It is a very bitter and sarcastic poem. Each stanza asks a suggestive rhetorical question. The first two stanzas are personal with "Does it matter?"-Losing your…" The third stanza has a plural meaning "Do they matter?" The final stanza says that the home country the war veterans return to, does not really understand the traumas that the soldiers went through. Though the real point of this poem is really saying that the nightmares from the war will never leave you and the fact that no one really knows the torture they went through.

Simon

The character of Simon plays an important role in the story Lord of the Flies by William Golding. He is a visionary and an intellect, always trying to find the truth. Simon is primarily a symbolic figure. Also, Simons encounter with the Lord of the Flies has notable significance in the story. Golding uses the character of Simon to reveal humanitys ignorance.

Simons intuitive wisdom separates him from the rest of the boys. He foretells Ralphs eventual rescue from the island by saying, I think youll get back all right. Furthermore, Simon has an inward sight that the beast was only a man once heroic and sick. His intelligence leads him to recognize the boys fear of themselves and that there is no beast, it is only them. The boys ignore his words of wisdom and laugh at what they cannot understand.

Simon symbolizes many things. He represents the prophets and philosophers that Golding feels are being ignored just as Simon is ignored by the boys. He characterizes the highest aspirations of the human spirit. It has also been said that Simon is an intended Christ figure in the novel. He is a symbol of all that is good and sincere in humanity.

Custom Essays on the lord of the flies

The confrontation of Simon and the Lord of the Flies is one of the more important events in the book. It depicts the goodness of mankind encountering the lowest part of man. The meeting represents the recognition of these forces in all men. This is when Simon fully understands that the beast is within each of the boys. Through this event, Golding expresses his belief that evil exists inside everyone and it is a necessary part of the human condition.

Simon is a mystical figure. The insightful wisdom that he possesses regrettably goes unseen by the boys and this inability to comprehend Simon is what leads to the disintegration of the society of the island. Golding is saying is that humanity is deaf to the voices of its prophets. Golding also expresses his point of view by Simons interview with Lord of the Flies where he indicates that man is inherently evil. The author communicates his morals and beliefs through the character of Simon.
