This is a book simply about Cal Ripken, Jr.'s, life. It tells about his childhood, where he grew up, his family, and his love for baseball as a kid. The author talks about Cal's baseball career as a little leaguer and in his High School career. He lists the places Cal, Sr., managed and the places Cal, Jr., played. The book also mentioned Cal's big league career and the records he holds in it. The author even talks about Cal's experience as the Rookie of the Year in 18 and the Major League's MVP in 18. This book really got into detail about his life.

Cal Ripken, Jr., was just an ordinary kid who loved the game of baseball and loved to compete. He grew up in a household of four kids. His mother's name was Vi Ripken. He loved his mother and he had great respect for her. She Mainly took care of the four kids. His dad was on road a lot. His dad was the manager of the Oriole's minor league team through all of Cal's childhood, so he learned a lot about the game of baseball and went to a lot of his dad's games. Cal had a very close relationship with his dad. Even though they didn't see much of each other when Cal was a kid, they got along well and talked a lot about baseball together. Cal tried to learn any little tips he could form his dad and the minor league players on his dad's team. When the team practiced, Cal and his little brother, Billy, went out and shagged balls for the team. Cal was the batboy for the team during the games. Cal grew up playing baseball, watching his dad's team play, and making a competition out of anything he did with his brothers or sister. At the age of seventeen, Cal was already playing for the Orioles in the minors. By the time Cal got to the minors his dad had gotten a job as a coach for the Baltimore Orioles. Only a couple of years later Cal was in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles. Cal had an amazing start in the majors. In 18, Cal was named Rookie of the year. In only his second year, Cal was the league's MVP. Not long after, his younger brother Billy was on the team. The three Ripkens were the talk of the majors. Cal got along with his brother very well. You could see them talk on the field during the games. Cal was the starter at short while Billy was at second. Cal was in the majors for nineteen years. Every year he made amazing plays and added to his numbers. Just this year he retired from baseball finishing number eight on the chart for the best to ever play the game. In many persons minds he was the best to ever play the game.

This book takes place during Cal's childhood all the way until now. Cal has lived in many different places do to his dad getting different managing jobs. He has lived in fifteen different cities growing up. Most of Cal's life was in Baltimore, Maryland.

I really liked this book. It gave plenty of good and interesting info on Cal's life. I thought it was cool to learn about how much Cal loved baseball and how far you can get with just a simple love for the game. I love play, watch, read, and learn about baseball. That made the book even better. Cal seems like a person I would like to meet someday. I've got to see Cal play once before in the old County Stadium. He had an excellent day against the Brewers that day. That made the book a little more interesting. I would recommend this book to any baseball fan.

The Chinese and Japanese immigrated to America and other countries in search for money. Most who immigrated to America were poor farmers (almost all male) who wanted to find a better life for themselves and their family. The early experience of the Chinese and Japanese immigrants was racism, hard work, and a rough life to adapt in a culture that was not the same as their own.

During the period of the gold rush many Chinese people came to California and sought after the gold in the mountains. At first the Chinese were welcomed into America because they took over jobs Americans didn¡¦t want to do, but than these Chinese were used to deal with white laborers who went on strike. Most Chinese people who immigrated worked at mines, plantations and railways.

After China lost to Britain in the Opium War, there was a dramatic increase of immigration to the U.S. Their self sufficient economy came to a halt and most peasants became bankrupt and had to leave the country in order to survive. Some Chinese immigrants used the credit ticket system to get into the U.S., it¡¦s when they borrow money to get a ticket to the U.S. and they pay the person back with a lot of interest.

There were the Chinese society in the U.S. was mostly a bachelor¡¦s society and some married, the men needed to satisfy their needs, so they went to prostitutes. Women and children were not allowed entry unless their husband or father was a merchant, which was a small percentage of Chinese men. Some even tried to pose as merchants in order to bring their family in.

In 188 the Chinese exclusion act was passed because of the increasing amount of immigrants coming into the country after the disaster in 106 by an earthquake. These Chinese exclusion act prohibited Chinese entry in the U.S. for ten years. Soon after the Chinese exclusion act was passed, there were more Japanese immigrating to the United States.

During the Meiji restoration, the Japanese required farmers to pay taxes on their land. Many farmers began to feel the economic destitution. Hawaii offered a chance for the Japanese to survive. The Japanese government encouraged their citizens to go to America as contract laborers during 1885 to 184. They signed agreements for a fixed pay of nine dollars a month with food, housing, and some medical care. They were told they could save a lot of money if they immigrated to Hawaii. Japan was ruled by a strong central government so there were specific groups of people who immigrated to the U.S., and they were able to control immigration population.

The Japanese worked hard as farmers, laundry workers, grocery stores, and barber shops for the Japanese community. The only real success of the Japanese in these jobs were the farmers, they began to make more rice. Every job required them to work long hours and long weeks; it was a rough life for the Japanese too.

The Japanese didn¡¦t want their citizens to be involved with prostitution, gambling and other bad habits. They allowed the immigration of women to the U.S., unlike the Chinese women who were not allowed in, Japanese women began to over populate the Chinese women that are in America.

"The Gift"

by Timothy Clover

The loss of the ability to empathize with or care deeply about other people is a theme that has always underlined the Vietnam War. This is shown in the many instances Americans have heeded of men killing innocent Vietnamese civilians for no apparent reason at all. However, in his poem "The Gift," Timothy Clover expresses the guilt the war had bestowed him and his uncertainty of US motivations for fighting in Vietnam.

"The Gift" is personal narrative written in the first person by the late Timothy Clover. In this poem, written during the Vietnam war, Clover speaks with a Vietnamese boy younger than the age of six. The poem is broken up into three stanzas; the first stanza contains four lines consisting of an alternating rhyme scheme and a set of rhyming couplets at the stanza's close, the second stanza is 1 lines formed by rhyming couplets, and the final stanza is a simple four lines with the last three rhyming. Though there is no clear set rhythm, there I however a definite use of

The terms of the war demand that a soldier renounce any form of empathy in order to survive. Of course with this demand comes an overwhelming feeling of guilt and shame. As an author who attempts to exorcise his guilt by generating the recurring image of the subject which causes him such remorse, Clover creates numerous titles for the young boy to whom he owes his guilt. By labeling the boy "child of the Asian sun" (line 1), Clover depicts the race and youngness of the boy. "Child of the holy rain" (line ), represents the religious acknowledgement the soldier has for the innocent people of Vietnam. The comparison of "hopeful-eyed tiny one" and "shining-eyed ageless one" (lines and 1) describes the changes in the way Clover views the boy at the beginning and the end of the poem. At the beginning, the boy seems full of hope, almost begging for peace. Yet at the end, the boy is so engulfed with the horrors of war, that despite his age, he's "had twice the years [Clover's] had (line 7)," therefore deeming him ageless. The repeated use of "-eyes" also illustrates the intensity of the silent relationship between Clover and the boy. The two never speak, yet the soldier knows that he is responsible for the boy's pain, the irony being that Clover brought his own guilt upon himself. By speaking of the boy in so many terms, Clover is able to relieve himself slightly of his burden.

When Clover questions the boy, he is also questioning US involvement in the Vietnam War. The poem itself is a metaphor for the body "hollowness" (line 5) Vietnam forced American soldiers to become. They were forced to put aside their compassion and youth to go out and kill, because after all, that was their "American Duty," right? The US government caused soldiers to feel like they "nothing inside [them]" (line 14). In lines 15-18, Clover describes the fate of each of the boy's family members, yet on a larger scale he exemplifies the added horrors we Americans brought to Vietnam. Vietnamese children were not criminals; they were merely born into a world of communism, hatred, and fear. Men died at the will of American soldiers, bountiful land was turned to "dust" (line ), soldiers took over towns, and Vietnamese women resorted to prostitution in order to earn money and respect from the soldiers.

Franklin's Tone

Benjamin Franklin is a world renowned writer, and essayist, his works have become strong literary works in American history. He has had strong perspectives and opinions in various subjects. One in which he shows the attitude of the early missionaries toward the Indian culture, and religion. "Remarks Concerning the Savage of North America", is an essay in which two men are discussing their beliefs in a certain area of their religion. The Swedish minister explains the story of Adam and Eve, where they eat an apple, and must be saved my Christ. The Swedish minister reveals this history with much pride, and is appreciated by the Indian orator. Thus the Indian orator begin to tell a tale of two young hunters, who gave a piece of their catch to a beautiful woman who needed food, and how the two young men were soon rewarded for their kindness. After explaining this tale to the missionary, he became disgusted, and refused to even think twice at the chance that this might be true. Franklin expresses the minister more on the evil side of the spectrum, because his tone changes while going from the orator to the minister.

Christian beliefs differ in a large way, from those beliefs of the native Americans. And the Christians were not tolerant at all of those people who expressed these beliefs in public, or in any way preached them. The Swedish minister is portrayed as a man who believes that his way of thinking is totally and utterly correct, and is the only belief in the world which has any true meaning. Franklin shows this by the choice of words he uses with the minister. " The good missionary, disgusted with this idle tale,…", by using the word disgusted, Franklin shows that the minister is not going to accept the Native American story, but try to tear it down, and make the orator feel insignificant.

Buy custom Franklin's Tone term paper

The Indian is shown as an accepting humble person, and Franklin obviously appreciates this way of thinking. By portraying the Indian orator as a gracious man. "When he had finished the Indian orator stood up to thank him…", this is showing that Franklin, likes the orator, because he is portraying him as the humble victim, who does not understand the hostility used in the ministers deliverance of the tale.

"What I delivered to you were sacred truths; but what you tell me is mere fable, fiction, and falsehood.", this is a direct quote from the minister himself, who shows no gratitude towards the orator for sharing his story with him. " What you have told us… is all very good. It is indeed bad to eat apples. It is better to make them all into cider. We are much obliged by your kindness in coming so far, to tell us these things which you have heard from your mothers." this is a quote from the orator, who is showing his appreciation towards the minister, and wishes to thank him for the brief story.

Franklins attitude towards the two men differ completely, this is shown through his choice of words. Using stronger words when in text with the minister, and softer, more allusive words with the orator. Franklins tone is this passage is more angry towards the minister, because Franklin wrote the essay, to show the discrimination the natives were put against with the Christians.

The Oceania society depicted in the 184 George Orwell novel is simply driven by propaganda. It seems as though every citizen of the "Super State" country must interact with a daily intake of propaganda create by the government so that control is maintained. Even the "non-citizen" Prolitarian community, which is the ignorant majority, is lead into a life filled with propaganda that inflicts feelings such as fear and hatred so that they can be controlled in a mental manner. Every person in Oceania is continually reintroduced to propaganda on a day to day basis so that they adore what their government does and whole heartedly hate any person who is against their ideals. The book is about control. Controlling a majority keeps the minority in place. The government in the novel knows that its citizens can be kept at an appropriate level of control if a lie is constantly told.

As you know everyone in Oceania is working for the benefit of Big Brother. The Party members and inner party members are lead to believe that they are laboring for the good of the country and for their comrades, but in reality they are only working to help Big Brother and the government obtain absolute power. The government makes sure that every level of knowledge in Oceania is obscured. The book written by Goldstein explains how a party member is preferred to be slightly incompetent. The government ensures that even the smallest details of history and literature is falsified to meet the ideals of Big Brother. Winston knew that things such as the "two minutes hate", the constant announcements of winning battles, and even how much supplies the country had are all tools to get the citizens to believe that the government is doing good rather than evil. A constant flow of wartime propaganda is also present throughout the text. The various posters of the Eurasian soldier with "The gun that seems to follow you from whatever angle you are looking at it from" are meant to inflict fear in the citizens and make them feel patriotic.

Not only is the propaganda constant, but it is also changing. One portion of the book Oceania will be at war with Eurasia and then instantly they will be at war with Eastasia. This is shown in the book when Winston was in the street listening to an orator speaking of the war and "In mid-sentence without a shudder in his words" the speaker changed his speech to say that they were now allied with Eurasia and at war with Eastasia. Although the Proles experience propaganda, it is not as abundant as it is with party members. The Proles are controlled with such freedoms as "the lottery" and most importantly thought.

I believe that the government that is shown in 184 is quite a mastermind. It is able to control its citizens with a constant flow of lies. Because the government is perpetually lying to its people then it never has to worry about making a mistake in the truth. The position of the leader Big Brother is propaganda in and of itself so that a constant influx of lies makes no difference in the commander's effectiveness. Without propaganda the totalitarian society of 184 would crumble.

One instant message would change the course of two lives forever. This is our story. We have been married for almost 5 years now

September 11, 16 Was the evening I first received an instant message on AOL Canada from the man who is now my husband. Who knew how it would turn out.

Were approaching our 5 year anniversary, and I am just in wonder every day how we met.

My name is Kimberly. I first got on the internet in December 15 but never really thought of its potential to find me a husband.

Buy custom Internet Love Story term paper

I was 8 and had had my share of bad relationships. I have had my share of pain and heartache. The wrong person, the wrong relationship, for too long. And scars for a lifetime. The relationship from hell ended years ago. I have had time to heal and make a happy life for myself. Oh sure, I didnt mind if I found a soulmate in my life, after all I am like everybody else and its always a nice thing to have. Hey, anytime. But life was too good after being in hell for years, and the last thing on my mind was to become romantically involved with anyone. I cherished my years of freedom and pain-free heart.

I was moving on in life, brushing aside the failed romance episode and eagerly biting into a life with plenty of years ahead of me to enjoy. In fact, I had resigned myself to a life without the soulmate thing. I had resigned myself to a solitary life, convinced I could never find anyone who felt the world with the same sensitivity I did. Whose heart beat at the same rhythm. Whose thoughts were the same, so much so that you could finish each other sentences and know each others thoughts. Imagine that.

Relationships and marriage become such heavy work on a daily basis that you have to be sure to marry someone you love and not someone you settle for.

Of course I was aware of the chat room syndrome and all the personal ads and pages out there promising to find your significant other, for free or at a price. I stayed clear of those. I had no interest or belief in their ability to have me meet anyone, and I wasnt interested in becoming involved anyway. I knew perfection was no part of this world, so my sad fate was to live it only in my head. In fact, I had carefully pushed aside and kept OUT of my head any thoughts relating to heart matters.

Then I received a Instant Message from a wonderful guy named Jordan. He sent me an e-TeddyBear.

After talking on line for a while and on the phone for hours for two nights we decided to meet and go out on a real date. The date was planned for a Friday the 1th....can we say scarry!

Everyone kept telling me he was probably an axe murderer but I didnt listen. I played it safe by letting everyone know where I was going. We went to pulic places and we had a wonderful 10 hour date.

When I dropped him off after the date he said those famous last words Ill call you. What do you know, before lunch the next day he called me.

Five months later we were engaged and a year and a half later we were married. On June 8, 00 we will celebrate our 5th year of marriage. Who knew that a computer and a thing called the internet could find my soul mate. We are very happy together and love each other very much.

I wish everyone could be as lucky.

An essential virtue for human beings, patience has an important place in our lives and one of the most critical has been patience in profession. The neck-breaking speed of changes and growth, higher and higher career ambitions and the fire in the belly to deliver the best has led to "Impatient professionalism". We have started measuring professionals by the speed by which they deliver their tasks; we have created our own standards for it. With the speedy expectations and then due to the unmet expectations, speedy conclusions are made which obviously have very high chances of being wrong. A co-worker not responding to my phone-call with the frequency I expect, a co-worker not delivering at the time I thought he/she should, or a co-worker not writing mails to satisfy my expected "mail-contents" is branded as unprofessional and dumb, and is sometimes named a wrong person at a wrong place. Impatiently I start look for a quick-fix solution to make things happen.

In the race to be the most successful ahead of all, I have forgotten the core values of a workplace. The workplace consists of multiple souls working together to achieve a common goal a common goal (of profitability and so on) by delivering in time while following the set business processes. Leaders have set the business process and set the time too to complete the tasks. Interestingly, a leader does understand the collective output of these souls within the process and has set the timeline accordingly. This is why he/she is a leader and in fact this is the most important virtue of the leaders; they understand beyond what normal people can. So I see that I am running hard to be a big success, to be a leader, but I am missing the very virtue in the frenzy.

Now the big question How do I do it? It certainly is not possible within a day or two; there is no quick fix for it. It does require patience to observe and understand before jumping to conclusions. In order to achieve this level of understanding I require a paradigm shift; the way I perceive situations and people in them. Every one of us is different; some are slow in writing mails, some are uncomfortable with phone and prefer meeting in person, some "are" slow in completing their tasks but still they are responsible enough to do their work. Many people haven't had the chance to get into Ivy League schools and rigorous study schedules, and so they cannot analyze situations on the fly. Such backgrounds or many more similar ones do not make people a clumsy worker; in fact, they are probably more meticulous than I think they are because they are aware of their limitations. Eventually, I need to "slow down" and think, and put my analysis to understand the given real-life situation. I need to understand my co-workers, the limitations and the strengths they posses, and that there are ways to do things differently at different pace. Once I am able to see that there are dozens of ways of solving a problem I will be able to understand what could be the best in what situation. Probably I was wrong all the time (I still need to learn a lot and I am learning!) or I was right, and now I can convince a better way through my team.

Considered what actions I could take to better my quality of life and make

myself more well round person and the only obvious answer to those questions was that I

had to go back to school; I needed to further my education, complete at least a Bachelors

degree, Once I accepted the fact that more years of school were in my near future,

Write my Essay on Personal Goal for me

I wrote down a number of things I wanted to accomplish during this next stage of my

education. After much thought and deliberation, I narrowed the list to three goals that I

am personally committed to achieve as a student expertise in my chosen field of study,

the ability to communicate that expertise, and expanding my network of acquaintances.

I earned my Associate of Science Degree in Information Technology at

the ITT- Technical Institute. Then wanted to continue in this field by taking the Bachelor

of Science in Information Technology at the University of Phoenix. Information

Technology is very interesting to me. So I decided to stick to IT field. Listening to

lectures in class, also spending considerable time in the lab, networking computer

together and seeing how it all comes together was enjoyable . I believe any motivated

student can earn good grades by doing the course work, asking questions and reading the

material. Plus Enjoy the subject your studying. But I want to do more than just simply

earn good grades. I wanted to learn everything that I can about Information Technology

like the business and technology side in this field. I want my peers and instructor to

recognize me as an IT professional.

Hand in hand with this goal of being recognized as an expert in

my chosen field is my second goal. The ability to efficiently communicate with my

instructors, peers, and clients by improving my oral communication skills and becoming

more confident when working on project and speaking efficiently to teams members.

Communicate regularly well with both my IT professionals and non-technical coworkers,

managers, and clients. I believe I already have excellent communication skills, my

objective in this case is to further improve upon those skills, specifically in the oral

presentation. I think the only way to improve this ability and gain confidence is through

repetition; I need to prepare extensively and volunteer to be one of the first speakers for

presentation projects.

The third goal I set for myself is to make a conscious effort to meet people

and make as many friends in my career as I can. I want to develop my communication

skills now and continue to use them throughout the next stage of my career. One

inadequacy I know I have is that I am slow to make friends; it normally takes me months

of knowing someone before I feel comfortable about talking openly.

Going to school, becoming a student and working full time is discouraging

But having a goal of gaining and exhibiting expertise it gives me something to focus on.

The goal of meeting more people, learning and stepping out of my comfort zone does

make me more well rounded person because of it, and that knowledge goes a long way to

help me with my future. I believe I have set myself three attainable and realistic goals.

"Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius

At thirty-two, I came at Chubb to gain the skill sets I needed to move forward in my career. About a year ago, like many Americans, I found myself "downsized" out of a job. After recovering from the shock, I decided that this otherwise unfortunate turn of events would present an excellent opportunity to pursue my passion for IT. I already have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Emory University, so I really was not looking for another Bachelor's degree. I needed job specific skills that would make me employable; skills that would help me advance to the next level. My positions to date are describable as functional with technical overtones. I found that I currently occupy a middle ground between functional user and application analyst. Yet, I discovered upon interviewing for technical positions, many employers wanted experience I didn't have. I have always been computer savvy, but did not have the professional training I needed. A decision to "do what I love" entailed returning to school.

I chose Chubb Institute because of their excellent reputation in the IT training industry. Chubb offers many advantages immersion-style training in a true-to-life working environment, industry case studies and instructors recruited from the IT industry who offer invaluable career support and advice. Chubb's newly developed Database Administration Program seemed to be the best choice to fill in my resume gaps. Databases and database applications have always fascinated me. For years I have worked on Oracle platform applications and had a firm grasp of the tenets and rules that govern databases. Additionally, I have always enjoyed troubleshooting and problem solving. My job responsibilities often expand to encompass being the unofficial helpdesk/application support person for my colleagues. I thoroughly enjoy my coursework at Chubb and believe this program provides an excellent mix of practical and theoretical foundations that will further my career aspirations. All of these factors will prepare me for an entry-level IT career working with Oracle. Eventually I aspire to become a Database Administrator or Application Developer. I currently work for a company as a payroll specialist, which ordinarily could be a niche "stuck there forever" (read dead-end) type of job. However my current company offers much room for advancement as they are technology-driven and prolific Oracle users, both internally and externally. I see myself building on my skill set to move from the front-end to the back-end of the application. I feel as if Chubb has given me an "IT toolbox" to support me in a career that will hopefully last a lifetime

A depressant is the former name of a group of drugs that produce central nervous system depression, and have been used throughout history to induce sleep, relieve stress, and allay anxiety (Depressants, 001). Today, physicians call these drugs anti-anxiety and hypnotic drugs. Depressants are addictive and if a person takes such a drug daily for several weeks, a physical and/or psychological dependence on it may develop (Depressant, 00).

There are five different types of depressants. They include alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines (Depressant, 00). Alcohol is a drink that is drank by adults mostly on social or ceremonial occasions. If too much alcohol is drank by a person, the functions of the brain are decreased, which make the person not think about his/her actions. Also, too much drinking can cause damage to the brain, stomach, intestines, and heart (Alcoholism, 00) . Sedatives are used to mainly ease anxiety or to produce sleep. An overdose of sedatives can disrupt the brain's control of breathing and circulation and may be fatal (Sedative, 00). Tranquilizers are drugs that are used to calm a person down, relax the muscles, and reduce tension. If too much is taken, muscle weakness, general fatigue, and drowsiness may be caused (Tranquilizer, 00). Barbiturates are drugs used to calm people or make them sleep. Barbiturates reduce the activity of the brain and the rest of the nervous system. An overdose can cause coma or even death (Barbiturate, 00). Benzodiazepine is a drug that is prescribed to relieve anxiety, treat insomnia, relieve muscle spasms, and prevent the seizures associated with epilepsy and other conditions. If overdosed, this drug can cause sleepiness and can interfere with a person's memory and coordination (Benzodiazepine, 00).

There are a couple of ways these depressants are taken into the body. Alcohol is taken into the body by the mouth (Alcoholism, 00). Sedatives are taken into the body by injection, inhalation, or by the mouth (Sedative, 00). Tranquilizers are taken into the body by injection or by the mouth (Tranquilizer, 00). Barbiturates are taken into the body by the mouth (Barbiturate, 00). Benzodiazepines are taken into the body by the mouth also (Benzodiazepine, 00).

Write your depressents research paper

There are different types of dependencies these depressants can cause on a person. Alcohol can cause physical dependency (Alcoholism, 00). Sedatives can cause both physical and physiological dependency (Sedative, 00). Tranquilizers can cause physiological dependency (Tranquilizer, 00). Barbiturates can cause both physical and physiological dependency (Barbiturate, 00). Benzodiazepines can cause physical dependency (Benzodiazepine, 00).

Depressants are one of the various substances that diminish functional activity, usually by depressing the nervous system. The purpose of these drugs is to ease pain, cause sleep, or reduce tension. Otherwise, they should not be taken. These drugs are so addictive that people tend to become dependent on such substances, which may cause insanity and in extreme cases, death. It is important to know that if someone is addictive to these drugs, he/she should seek professional help before these substances cause permanent damage (Depressant, 00).

My assumption is that Polaroid's growth strategy was based solely on the technology involved and development of its Polarizing process. They remained driven by this process and attempted to stay one step ahead of the competition prior to the 170s.

Based on the development strategy that Polaroid employed in the early years, there are many factors one can blame, the environment, the customer, the competition, but the responsibility lay with the upper management of the company. They should have been focusing in on changing the foresight of its vision to adapt to the changing marketplace. This could have been achieved by vigilant monitoring of what the competition was doing and specifically what the customer wants. The Company made to attempt to adapt to the Technological changes that was rapidly gaining ground around their business with the aim of keeping competitive.

To summarize, the human resource plan in the 150s, 160s and 170s was to grow its employee base sufficiently enough to deal with the increasing attractiveness of its breakthrough product, they also harnessed skilled employees that could helped the organization develop innovative products and by extension grow the organization, their was no strategic plan for the future. This compared to the plan for the 180s and 10s which was to develop new innovative products aligned with technological changes in the industry and to train and re-train the staff to adapt to the advances in technology to better prepare its human resources for the possibility of job loss as the company downsized.

Cutbacks and retrenchment had a profound effect on the company's human resource plan during the declining years, because employees were going to be sent home. In 188 Polaroid went through a major downsizing, eliminating 8,500 jobs, a further 5% cut was announced in 15 to further destabilize the company. We feel that the fall in employment at Polaroid was really a product of lack of foresight, willingness to adapt to changing markets, and the inability to adequately identify their target market. The Human resource plan for the 80's and 0's shifted towards preparation for layoff and certain downsizing and leaned more towards training and development. The company's human resource plans together with the overall business plan would have had to deal with the reactions of its main suppliers, loyal customers and entrenched employees. We believe that cutback could be have been avoided, this with a enhanced growth strategy plan in place, employees who were doing what would be considered duplicate jobs could have been retrained and sent to other departments. Employees who had valuable skills that are sought in the work environment, but would be harmful if no longer available to the company could have been contracted out to other companies who are having a hard time filling jobs of a technical nature. Polaroid should have developed their workforce sufficiently so they could have moved them around when certain positions become obsolete.

Many companies in the United States have either folded or are struggling due to lack of vision or competitiveness. A good example of this would be Kmart loss of ground to Wal-Mart.

Curley, I'm writing this letter cause for a long time I've been wanting to tell ya somethin'. When we married I knew from the firs' day that you weren't any good for me, from the firs' day of our marriage I disliked you. An' you know why, cause you're nothin' then jus' a dirty ranch man, who can think on'y bout fighting and goin to have a shot offa corn in'a closest bar. Ya'r nothin' better than other ranch workers, who get them 50 bucks at the end offa month an' go to spend alla of 'em in'a brothel or for'a whiskey to get God damn drunk. I cn't see any litt' difference between you and them, an' there's no difference.

Every week ya go to a bar an' come back God damn drunk at late night. How do you think I feel then bout you? But ever'thing has a limit. You know, if not my ol' lady I'd have gone to Hollywood an' prolly I coulda find that man who promised me to take me in movie. Yes he sa' that I'm natural, and if not my ol' lady then I'd never be livin' with ya in this God damn place, I coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes all of them nice clothes like they wear. An' I coulda set in them big hotels, an' had pitchers took me. But whatta I got I've gotta husban', a swell guy. An' alla time I have to listen how he'd "use the ol' one-two to make him go down". And all I can do is jus' to set in your God damn ranch an' talk to a bunch of bindle stiffs. I'm dying from loneliness, Curley. An' plus, when ya come home you starta talk about fighting again, you're almost like fighting cock to me.

You never care bout me, about how I felt and never try to make me feel better. Instead ya do opposite ya tell me to set in your God damn two-by-four house, an' do nothin'. But do you think that I like to stick in it alla time?.. But, Jesus Christ, if you see me outside you get so damn angry as somebody stole somethin' from you, an' alla your anger you put on me. For what? What have I done to you?.. You're worse than an animal.

Cheap Custom Essays on Letter To Curley

An' what about yer han', stuck in'a machine, ah? Yeah, baloney! You're a pathetic loser. Finally you've been shown that you ain't the strongest. An' I'm so thankful to that fella Lennie for doing it to ya. But why didn' you use yer "ol' one two", not tough enough. An' why didn' you ever fought with someone like Slim? What, was there no reason to, but you're wrong there was an' you knew it. You knew that there was somep'in between 'im an' me, but you was too scared to admit it, you was too scared to say a single word against Slim. It makes you such a loser, Curley.

Aw God! I'm so fed up with you, Curley, if you could on'y understand how much. But I guess that I shouldn't worry any more, cause I leave you, yes Curley I leave you. I'm gonna go to make my own life. I'll prolly go to Hollywood and find the man. Course you'll think that I'm outa my mind, but I ain't. I ain't gonna waste the rest of my life in your God damn ranch, rot there yourself! I wish you to rot in your damn place. Go on, go to brothel, drink, have a game of euchre, but I'm gonna be far away from you. Have a nice life!

Your former wife.

Smith and Bradford Study Questions

Smith

1. Smith is addressing his words towards the colonists whose means are to get a fortune in New England.

. One attraction that appeals to virtue, faith, and honor in New England is discovering new things.

Do my essay on slavery CHEAP !

. Three means of earning a living in New England are fishing, farming, and hunting. Five trades that are needed in New England are commanding power, building material, defenses, enough provisions, and more builders and people to protect.

4. Smith is trying not to persuade families to break apart such as children from their parents, men from their wives, and servants from their masters. According to Smith, the people that should go are young married couples, or fourteen-year-old fatherless children.

5. King, country, master and servant will all benefit from the establishment of New England.

6. The general impression that Smith gives of New England is one of free land and good money. He gives a good impression of New England.

7. Smith hardly describes the drawbacks of settling in New England because he wants people to settle there.

8. Smith wrote this piece not only as a description of New England, but also to show how England would benefit from New England. He states specifically in paragraph five that everyone will benefit from this growth.

Bradford

1. The Pilgrim's first action upon landing in the New World was to thank God for bringing them across the vast ocean.

. Four specific hardships that the Pilgrims faced were the lack of shelter, the Native Americans, the harsh winter conditions, and starvation. The Spirit of God and His grace sustained the Pilgrims.

. When the "calamity" hit, the sailors helped out the sick men. The calamity was disease. As the calamity began to spread, the Pilgrims still onboard drank beer jollily; however, some of the pilgrims did show mercy.

4. According to Bradford, the Indians first came rarely, and would never show their faces. They would run away if anyone approached and would steal the Pilgrims' tools. After "friendly entertainment and some gifts," they made a peace treaty. Samoset and Squanto brought them back their tools, and showed them how to plant corn, fish, and use other commodities.

5. A few dominant characteristics of the Mayflower during their first months of hardship are want of shelter, starvation, scurvy, and many deaths.

6. Bradford creates a picture that the Pilgrims were God's "chosen people" by writing excerpts from the bible telling how they are similar to the arrival of the Pilgrims in the New World.

7. At first, Bradford assumed that the Indians wanted to shoot the Pilgrims with their bows and arrows. But, after the "Compact with the Indians," Bradford sees the Indians as good people who know much about the wilderness. The way the Indians are civilized in a way seems to have changed his opinion on them.

8. Some qualities that I think would be required to survive in the American wilderness are endurance, being able to use resources well, and good camping instincts. Some attributes from Europe that would have to be abandoned are living in pre-built houses, living elaborately and ornately, and laziness.

How do you know that you're a part of this patriotic movement sweeping the nation? Sure, you bought the flag, and maybe your uncle Billy Joe Bob from the biker gang known as the Spyders wears the U S of A flag-bandana, but where are you? Here I would like to share with you the Easy Steps to becoming a true patriot. Now be forewarned, these steps may seem a little rash at first, but this is simply a test to see if you are 'patrioty' enough. Once you have accepted that you must love and honor your country at all costs, the next small factor you must accept is that anyone and anything standing between you and the title of most 'patrioty' in your local area can, and must, be eliminated.

First of all, get your Patrioty People's Starter List from www.reallypatrioty people.com. First off, go ahead and make sure there is nothing on this list that is against any of your religious obligations or personal morals, if there is, it's time to change faiths, and drop anything your momma taught you that goes against your country. If you are not able to do this, go ahead and just electrocute yourself by attaching two large metal cables to those piercings on your buttocks. But if you are able to continue, set up each object as indicated, as soon as you buy it. For instance, that 50' x 50' flag should promptly become a part of your roof with the aid of a nail gun. And any flag smaller than the size of a poster board should become a part of your car's paint job using that 60 Second Epoxy found at your local, American owned, Advanced Auto Parts. Also, that bandana should never come off your head, with the exception of during meals, hand to hand combat with those Comi-Japs, or while you shower.

Next, begin cracking down on those non-American sounding business's and organizations in your area. You can find these easily in your phone book, simply flip through and look for those weird names. Begin your daily patrioty exercises by calling these numbers and leaving threatening messages. If you are American enough to continue this for a week, at least 1/4th of the non-American businesses will change their numbers, cutting their business down to at least half. For those who have the audacity to keep their numbers, can be persuaded to change their minds, and by persuaded I do mean tortured in a 1th century style dungeon. You have no idea what type of wonders losing a limb, or a simple public beheading will do to bring those foreigners on to our side.

And finally, begin a quest to find all those foolish non-Americans using our inter-state highway systems. Begin following one person after another, attempting whatever necessary to get their tires to churn gravel in those ditches next to the roadways; a simple side swipe should take them off the road if they don't do so voluntarily, following your obscene hand gestures. Of course, you will get clean away if you have enough flags attached to your car, because, hey, everyone knows a true patriot when they see one.

I am sure that many people have come across the aggressive driver, the uncertain driver, and the slow driver, and you may also be classified under one of these at one time or another.

The aggressive drivers are seriously the best drivers overall, and they have to be. If they weren't such great drivers they would get into much more accidents then they do. These drivers have the uncanny ability to squeeze through the smallest openings as they weave through every car that gets in their path. They always seem to be in the biggest hurry as they drive inches behind your car waiting for the opportunity to pass you. Then once they pass you they give you some gesture, like you were going twenty miles under the speed limit when actually you were going over the speed limit.

The slow drivers are another type and are always those eighty-year-old grandparents that go at least ten miles under the speed limit at all times. They're usually always driving cars that look almost as ancient as themselves. These types of driver also have the special ability to know when you are in a hurry and get in front of you while your driving on a one way street. While they're in front of you they go 5 in a 45 mile per hour zone and they stop early whenever they see something suspicious in front of them. Even if it is a bicyclist that has five feet of room to spare the slow driver will slow down even more to be careful as they can.

Then there is the uncertain driver who never really knows exactly where they want to go and flashes his blinkers in every direction. They get in the right lane right in front of you, slow down, and are about to turn when they realize they are going the wrong way. Then the car jerks and they continue to drive right in front of you. Like the slow driver the uncertain driver drives at slow speeds but then speeds up when he realizes what speed he is going. The biggest problem is you have no idea where they are going and neither do they.

These drivers are always the ones who get into the most car accidents. Even though the aggressive drivers are best overall it is inevitable that their dare devil driving will get them into a car accident. The slow driver always seems to get into a lot of accidents that they usually consider is not their fault. They could be stopping suddenly for something that spooks them and the unsuspecting motorist behind them may crash into the rear of their car. Then comes the uncertain driver with their constant lane changing and not knowing where they are going. They inevitably switch lanes and crash right into the side of another vehicle. All of these drivers have their problems but even I am sometime classified as one of these and I feel I am a very good driver.

Love-Crazy Gatsby

Owen Klein 11th

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that is written about a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, the few people he effects, and the aura surrounding him and his past. A chosen prose passage for explication, found on page one hundred seventeen in the novel, gives the reader insight into Gatsby's past and foreshadows his future. It portrays a love-struck Gatsby in his youth, and shows the great love he had for a boyhood fling, Daisy. This passion for Daisy turns into an obsession when he loses her to go to war. His love stays with him and leads him to her five years later, only to find her with another man. Still he pursues his greatest love, and encounters that what he has done is built her up to be the perfect woman, put her on a magnanimous pedestal, which guides Jay to disappointment.

Literally, the passage is full the use of poetic terms and phrases such as metaphors and personification. "The quiet lights in the houses were humming into the darkness," creates a very peaceful mental image for the reader. Jay strives to, "gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder," which was a kiss from Daisy. "Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete." There are many uses tone and symbolism that are needed to create the feeling of love inside the reader, for these are the things that comprise a good novel.

Jay Gatsby's past is full of obscurities. The reader sees that James Gatz, later Jay Gatsby, was born of a slightly impoverished agricultural family. He absconded from them because he had a dream that he wanted to be something other than a farmer, someone who was noticed, wanted to make a difference. He left and changed his name to something more catchy, Jay Gatsby. Influenced later by a wealthy man on proper etiquette, Gatsby joins the military where he meets Daisy and falls in love. Time flies, and Jay is soon transferred to the battleground, where he is praised for valor in combat and promoted. Gatsby never relinquishes his feelings for Daisy, and decides to track Daisy after the war. In his proceedings, Gatsby involves himself in some illegal operations, such as bootlegging liquor during prohibition, and eventually becomes quite wealthy. He moves very close to the vicinity where Daisy resides with her family. When Jay finally meets Daisy five years later, he is surprised because she was not the woman he had been dreaming of, for his imagination had distorted what he thought of Daisy. He was somewhat disappointed, yet he bore all to be with her. Nick, Gatsby's friend and narrator of the novel says, "His life had been confused and disordered since then [he left for war], but if he could return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing [love] was…"

All that Jay Gatsby goes through to be close to his love is very valiant, yet without any influence from Daisy, Jay breaks his own heart.

Coming to College

In this day and time, education has become a valuable keepsake. Learning a marketable skill is

more precious than gold. That is why I am glad to be enrolled in school and on the verge of graduating.

Being in college has really inspired me to reach for higher goals. It has also made me more aware of my &

potentials. Most importantly, being in college has taught me to be responsible and involved in my future.

That is why I think coming back to college was a good choice for me.

Coming back to college has forced me to grow up. The first day of class seemed like one of

the longest days of my life. For one, I did not know anyone in my class. As the days went by, I got to

know some of my fellow classmates, not knowing they would be some of the same people I would

finish school with. I was forced to be to class on time. If I was late, there was a probability that the

instructor could give a quiz. I had to learn that the instructor was not my mother or father. It is not their

job to make me come to class everyday. Whether I was there or not, class would still go on. When

the instructor gave me an assignment to do, it had to be done. He or she was not going to keep asking

me to the project.

Next, coming to college has taught me responsibility. I have to do what is expected of me in

order to get a good grade in the course. One semester, I had to buy a radio and put the radio together.

When it was assembled, it had to get three radio stations that played clear. That was not an easy task.

Keeping up with all the parts to the radio and making sure that I did not blow one of the transistors was

pretty tough. I had to make sure I put the right part in the right place. Turning the first IF stage was

easy but the second and third was difficult. Trying to keep the stations that I had already had and trying

to get the other stations was not easy at all. I had to finish the project in a timely manner in order to

receive the grade I wanted. So, getting my work in on time was one of the responsibilities I had

learned.

Last, coming to college is teaching me how to get a job. I did not know there are so many

different jobs in the avionic field. Companies like Boeing, FedEx, UPS, Delta, and Honeywell hire

avionic graduates with little or no experience. They often send information to the colleges telling the

them what they are looking for in potential employees. That lets the college know what to teach us and

what new equipment is coming out. That is how college is teaching me how to get a job.

When I came to college, I felt like a nerd. I have now come to realize that there is nothing

wrong with going to college. It is a place where I can new things, and it teaches me what is expected of

me as a future employee in my field of training. Although I complained in the beginning about how long

I had to stay in school, I know one day it will pay off. I hope this experience can be an inspiration to

my kids one day.

1. Brazil was facing hyperinflation i.e. supply of money was way beyond the demand for the money. Therefore Cardoso designed a real plan to drive out inflation form Brazil. His plan was based on the pegged exchange system. Under this system a country will peg the value of its currency to that of a major currency. The value of the real was pegged to that of the U.S. dollar and allowed to depreciate against the dollar by no more than 7.5% per year. To keep depreciation under control Brazil raised the interest rates repeatedly to maintain the value of the real against the dollar. The high cost of credit helped reduce the expansion of the money supply and brought inflation under control.

. Following steps were taken by the Brazilian government to defend the peg of the real against the U.S. dollar.

„³The Brazilian central bank began to purchase reals in the open markets using its foreign exchange reserves.

„³The government announced $10.8 billion in budget cuts.

„³ In order to increase the attractiveness of holding the real, the Brazilian government raised the interest rates to as high as %.

. Though the costs of pegging of the real against the dollar were quite high the policy did help the Brazilian government to drive inflation out of the Brazilian economy.

The costs were as follows

„³ Fall in the foreign exchange reserves because f the sale of the real by the central bank

„³ In spite of the budget cuts of approximately $10.8 million dollars traders continued to sell the real.

„³ Hike in the interest rates led to an increase in the cost of servicing the government debts, reducing the government tax receipts and increase in the deterioration of the fiscal deficit.

The benefits were defeat of decades of hyperinflation and stability in the Brazilian economy.

4. Under a floating exchange rate system Brazil would have been able to correct its trade deficit. The imbalance between the supply and demand of Brazil¡¦s currency in the foreign exchange market would have led to depreciation of its exchange rate. In turn, by making its exports cheaper and its imports more expensive, exchange rate depreciation could have corrected the trade deficit. On the other hand floating exchange rate system can lead to speculation of the country¡¦s currency. It can damage a country¡¦s economy by distorting export and import prices. Floating exchange rates would have implied a risky foreign investment in Brazil. This uncertainty would have dampened the growth of international trade and investment.

5. There would have been a major trade deficit in Latin America because imports would be higher than the exports. Floating exchange rate system would also make business planning extremely difficult. U.S. would think twice before investing in Latin America As result the Brazilian economy would be badly hit because Latin America absorbed 0% of all exports from the United States.

The Trench System

The trench system was the main defence of both sides of the Second World War when both sides met stalemate in the fields of northern Europe from the earliest days of the war.

Reserve Trenches

Do my essay on The Trench System CHEAP !

Reserve trenches are used to fall back to when the forward trenches are taken over by enemy troops also for storage uses.

Communication trenches

Communication trenches were dug at an angle to those facing the enemy. These trenches used to transport men, equipment and food supplies. The French had tramways installed while the British tended to rely on manpower to get the supplies to the trenches.

Listening posts

Running out at right angles from the frontline trenches were saps. These saps were about 0 yards long. Small groups of soldiers were sent to the listening posts (sap heads) and were given the task of finding out about the enemy. This included discovering information about enemy patrols, wiring parties, or sniper positions. After a heavy bombardment soldiers would be ordered to seize any new craters in No Mans Land, which could then be used as listening posts. From August 116 all British Army units were under orders to occupy any shell-hole within 60 yards of their forward trench.

Runners

The British Army trained some men to work as runners. Red armbands around their left forearms identified these men. As well as carrying messages runners were responsible for scouting the area before their battalion moved up to the front-line. Runners therefore needed the ability to accurately read complicated trench maps.

Sapping

A tactic used on the Western Front was to dig short trenches (saps) across No Mans Land. These were dug towards the enemy trenches and enabled soldiers to move forward without exposure to fire. Several saps would be dug along a section of front-line. These were then joined together at their far ends to create a new trench. Saps were also used as listening posts. Although sapping was slow and gruelling work, especially during summer months, it was a fairly safe way to make territorial gains.

Parapet

The front of the trench was known as the parapet. Both the parapet and the parados (the rear-side of the trench) were protected by two or three feet of sandbags.

Fire step

So that soldiers in front-line trenches could fire through the parapet, a fire-step was dug into the forward side of the trench. The fire-step was or ft high. It was on this that the sentries stood.

Duckboard

Most of the land on the Western Front was only a couple of feet above sea level. As soon as soldiers began to dig trenches they would invariably find water just below the surface. Constantly standing in water caused trench foot and other ailments. In an attempt to alleviate the problem, wooden planking, known as duckboards, were placed at the bottom of trenches and across other areas of muddy or waterlogged ground.

Barbed wire

Barbed wire was usually placed far enough from the trenches to prevent the enemy from the trenches to prevent the enemy from approaching close enough to lob grenades in. Sometimes barbed-wire entanglements were set up in order to channel attacking infantry into machine-gun fire.
