Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter is story about Hestor Prynne, a woman who

commits a sin and is filled with many feelings, including pride, surrounding that sin.

Many of those around Hestors sin reflect similar emotions and feelings. Hawthorne

employs many symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne uses the colors red,

black, and white to represent Hestors emotions and the emotions of those around her.

The most frequently employed color symbol by Hawthorne is red. Red most obviously

represents Hestors sin, as shown by her scarlet A she is forced to wear. Her scarlet

letter, like her sin, is something she must always deal with and is something she can

never escape. Pearl, the product of Hestors sin, is usually dressed in red clothing,

representing the sin. Pearl is also called the names Ruby, Coral, or red Rose, and a

little bird of scarlet plumage, further extending Pearl as a red representation of Hestors

sin. Red is employed by Hawthorne to show passion and sensuality. The sin is also

represented by the letter A being formed in the sky by meteors, and an A appearing

on Reverend Dimmesdales chest. The first encounter with red is the description of a wild

red rosebush growing outside the prison where Hestor was imprisoned. This is

representing Hestors pride and passion, growing in a place not fitting, similar to how

Hestors passion did not fit in with the Puritan society. As the sunlight shines through a

red and yellow window in the governors house, a red light shines throughout the room.

This is symbolizing Hestors passion spreading throughout the Puritan society.

Hawthorne also uses black and darkness as symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter. Black

is used to represent evil and hiding. Hawthorne calls the prison the black flower of

civilized society, meaning it is evil and a place concealing the truth. Frequently

Hawthorne makes references to darkness turning to light, suggesting darkness as a state

of hiding where the person will not accept lifes experiences and holds back. Pearls eyes

are called a small black mirror, meaning they are empty and filled with sin as they

reflect Hestors scarlet letter. Hawthorne explains black weeds growing from a sinners

grave as evil coming out and dying hope. The Puritans describe Satan as the Black Man

in the forest. Black is used to symbolize the worst and most evil part of an object or

person.

Hawthorne employs white and light to oppose darkness as a state of self- containment.

White most clearly symbolizes purity. Pearl, who has not committed any great sins nor

does she hold herself back from anything, is always portrayed with the light shining on

her. When Hestor removes her scarlet letter and faces her sin and pride, the sunlight

shines on her for the first time. The sunshine is used to express a moment of

enlightenment and change.

Hawthorne uses reds, darkness, and light, to express characters emotions and the state of

their spirit. Red is passion and sin. Darkness represents a poor state with self-denial, as

well as representing simply evil. Light symbolizes a state of enlightenment and a

refreshed spirit, as well as purity. The color symbols in The Scarlet Letter help to transfer

certain themes and ideas to the reader, as they are easily recognized and identified.

Hawthornes symbolism shows the simplest events of one person permeating throughout a

society.

Do actions really speak stronger than words?

Most people find actions speak louder the words, but do they really? In William Shakespeares Julius Caesar Antonys words spoke louder then any of his actions. When he spoke at Caesars funeral, he was able to use his emotions and beliefs to his advantage. The major theme of his speech was Brutus and Cassius. Antony wanted the crowd of Romans to know their intentions of killing Caesar. He stressed how unhonorable Brutus was in his intentions of killing Caesar. Due to Antonys persuasive speech, he was able to cause the destruction of Brutus and Cassius. By the end of Brutuss speech at Caesars funeral, he had the crowds support. They were cheering along with him and truly felt his side. No one would have thought they would change their opinions until Antony took the podium. He stated right from the start I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him (..81). As he began talking about how honorable Brutus is, no reader would have seen this change of heart coming. He stressed Brutus being an honorable man, in a way for the crowd to see he wasnt. By using this form of reverse psychology he was able to get the crowd to really see how unhonorable Brutus was to Caesar. This led the crowd to turn against Brutus, Cassius and their partners in crime. As soon as the crowd finished listening to Antonys speech, they were enraged with the conspirators. Brutus and Cassius fled from Rome in order to protect themselves. In hiding, they camped out and their friendship slowly began to go downhill. A fight broke out between them that really tested their friendship. Here Brutus realized Cassius true intentions The name of Cassius honors this corruption. (4..16). Their fight went on and included personal and political insults against each other. If Antony hadnt given his speech, the Romans would have never realized what these men really did. Without the disprovement of the Romans they would never had gotten into this situation. Would Brutus have ever figured out the true intentions of Cassius and the rest of the conspirators if Antony hadnt brought them to this point? Guilt can be one of the hardest emotions to store. Brutus had the guilt of killing one of his friends ever since Antonys speech. It caused him to realize what he did really was wrong. O Julius Caesar, thou art mighty yet! (4..105). Here he states even though Caesar is gone he is still and will always be a powerful influence. The way Brutus handled this guilt of killing Caesar was killing himself. The destruction he caused on himself, suicide was brought on by the speech. Brutus might have not ever realized the harmful crime he really committed without Antonys strong speech. The influence of a persons word can lead to a number of things. Without Antonys speech, Brutus could have had a whole different future ahead of him. As soon as Antony finished speaking, he had the Roman people already on his side ready to fight. Two very good friends were able to turn on each other quickly without anything really to even fight about. Although the speech led to a bump in the friendship of Cassius and Brutus, they were still able to remain friends in the end. The most powerful result of Antonys speech was the death of Brutus. He was able to take his own life because of someones powerful words. For these reasons, it can be believed that words really do speak louder then actions.

In Canada, little emphasis is placed on the arts. The majority of the population takes the arts for granted; but those who embrace them understand their importance within our Canadian culture. People have "multiple-intelligences"; not everyone can describe a scene in words, but instead find it easier to describe the same scene in a drawing or a play. The arts are universal, and should be enjoyed and expressed by all ages, genders, and ethnicities. In addition, artists are not well supported by the government and therefore it is much more difficult to maintain financial security and a good lifestyle. With this in mind, one could argue that in Canada there is not enough public support for the arts.

In Canada the support needed for the arts is quite apparent. Canadians enjoy all types of art; paintings in our museums and art galleries, broadway musicals and the unique sounds from our Canadian musicians and composers. Art has a way to trigger most of our senses and all of our emotions. The success that the art industry has worldwide makes it inconceivable why there is little public support for it in Canada. Not only do artists feel the effects of the lack of public support but also struggle with the lack of government support.

If the government would put more money into Canadian arts, then maybe it would be a more lucrative field for Canadians to venture within. Instead, artists often are forced to find out "blue-collar" jobs to support themselves and earn a proper salary. Individuals should be able to follow their dreams and enter a career that appeals to them. Instead, they are discouraged from doing so. There is a handful of talented artists in Canada who have never pursued their dreams due to a lack of money.

It is very rare to stumble upon a talented Canadian artist, whereas, Americans artists, on the other hand are a dime a dozen. Musicians from Canada most often have American or other foreign contracts, as Canadian contracts are quite difficult to come across. Canadian musicians do not have chance to excel, in their home country, simply because they are not supported financially by the government and therefore are unable to obtain the promotions they need in order to move ahead.

Custom writing service can write essays on More emphasis is needed for the arts in Canada

Without public support, artistic individuals are forced to think in unnatural ways. Everyone's mind works differently. There are those who are easily articulated in their words, and there are others who can only express themselves using sounds, or visuals. For those artistic individuals whose right side of their brain is enhanced, they must learn how to utilize the opposite side of their mind. This is like teaching a right-handed individual to use their left hand. It is an abnormal function for that person. Every entity should be able to perform in an instinctive manner. In Canada, without the public support that the arts needs, many people are pushed into jobs and careers just for the sake of money. Otherwise they will be deemed for failure. With the majority of the population enjoying the arts, it is incomprehensible why there is a lack of support present. Canada should allow every human being a fair and equal chance to meet their goals and follow their dreams.

Banks A veil of safety

Day One Despite a lack of public information, sources say serious security breaches are clearly increasing as more banks and consumers do business online.

Lets face it, a bank is in the business of trust……The reason you go to a bank is because you trust them not only to give you a good rate of return on your money, but also to keep your money safe and secure, and to protect your privacy associated with your finances. Attacks on the electronic infrastructure are attacks on all three of those.

Often, the highest cost for financial institutions is not the loss of money directly from theft but the expense of fortifying their systems to avoid repeat intrusions. Security experts estimate that a bank can spend upward of $1 million on equipment and consulting after a single incident to repair flawed technologies, which can require far more vigilance than the surveillance cameras, alarms and guards used to secure physical branch offices.

Insiders know your systems. They can inflict the most damage, Skoudis said. They might be gone for months but may have installed remote-control software to get in from anywhere.

No matter how great a job you do, a determined attacker will eventually find some sort of problem

You have to find just one fault to exploit, while banks need to cover all possible faults.

Anatomy of a hacking

GLORY HALLELUJAH

The legendary film Glory begins with a scene of war. In this war, Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) sees the violence caused by the war and is disillusioned. He returns home to find that his parents, who are strict abolitionists, have volunteered him to lead an all-black army, which is to be a part of the Union forces.

At first he is completely stunned. Later, however, he realizes that he must take this up as a challenge. He gets many volunteers. As they arrive at their training camp, however, the other soldiers jeer at them. These men brave this and begin getting into shape. At first their use is limited to the realm of manual labor. The movie stars Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. Washington plays a very bull headed soldier who seems to wish to fight the world. Morgan plays an old mans who later becomes a non commissioned officer, a Sergeant. Washington is consistently trying to fight. At first, he escapes in hopes of getting shoes, only to be brought back and whipped. Then, he tried to intimidate the other soldiers. Eventually, they head into a "war." Unfortunately for them, this also turns out to be a horrendous experience. The soldiers and their commander along with another battalion of African Americans go to a nearby town and destroy it. The soldiers of the other troop ransack houses and burn them willingly. While Gould refuses to do so, his superior (who heads the other black regiment) orders him to do so. While the soldiers of the other regiment take supplies and valuables, Gould's men respectably do not touch anything and are completely ashamed. Gould's superior's only explanation for this is that the Blacks will never fight in a real war, and that for their enjoyment, they should supposedly be allowed to destroy towns

Finally, however, the 54th regiment gets a chance to show its strength. And so it defeats a group of rebels (as the Confederates are referred to in the movie).

Custom writing service can write essays on glory

Later, a plan is conceived to take a Southern Fort. And the first group to go in and try to capture the fort (as reinforcements come in from the back) is the 54th regiment. Gould will have by now realized that his regiment wants to fight, and so they fight for glory.

Confederates sit high above on their fort and shoot everything from cannon fire, to muskets, and even grenades at their enemy. At the end of the film it appears at first that the black division will win as they circle around and appear to have outflanked their enemy. But then the smoke clears and a cannon and several confederate soldiers come into view. The next thing that is seen is the morning and the sight of confederate soldiers hurling the bodies of their enemy into deep mass graves.

The movie was exceptionally well done. In the final scene when Gould yells "charge" even though he knows he will be shot is very stirring. It shows how although most Northerners were just as racist as slaveholders, many were very passionate about the rights of the African Americans. Also, after Gould falls, a man who had for a long time held the causes of the war in contempt. He too yells "charge" and sacrifices his life. The movie also shows how if people tried, they could bond and forget their differences. The movie is well directed and flows very well. Also, I enjoyed the feeling that it was realistic. The soldiers were not welcomed into the army, and certainly there was a definite element of social issues in the movie. It was not a plain civil war enactment. Instead, it showed the lives of people of that time period.

When Richard Wright wrote the novel Native Son he used the main character, Bigger, to convey a message to the readers. This message is that people can be reduced to their natural animalistic state where they feel that when you are attacked or scared your only options are to fight, flee, and freeze. This can be caused by outside forces such as a person's surroundings and history. Bigger's use of these three options is shown through three character traits, his violence, spontaneousness, and his fear.

First, Bigger is violent at many points throughout the book. The first sign of Bigger's violence was in the very beginning of the book when he and Buddy killed the rat. Another sign of Bigger's violence is when Gus shows up late to Doc's. "He made a long step as graceful as an animal leaping, threw out his left foot and tripped Gusto the floor. Gus turned over to rise, but Bigger was on top of him, with the knife open and ready." (Wright 8) Binger's violence is directly related to the message that Richard Wright is trying to convey to his readers, it shows that when Bigger is faced with a problem instead of facing the problem he chooses to fight through violence.

Next, Bigger is spontaneous. Bigger doesnt think before he does many things, this trait leads him to do things that he wouldn't normally do. For example, Bigger holds the pillow over Mary's face so that he could keep her quiet without even thinking about what could happen to her if he continued to do that. "The reality of the room fell from him; the vast city of white people that sprawled outside took its place she was dead and he had killed her. He was a murderer, a

Negro murderer, and a black murderer. He had killed a white woman." (Wright 87). Bigger not thinking about what could happen to Mary, caused him to unknowingly take away Mary's life. This event was a catalyst for many other problems that face Bigger throughout the book. Another time when Bigger showed his spontaneous nature was when he rapes Bessie; he just did it without thinking. This trait conveys Richard Wright's message because after doing all these things Bigger is forced to turn to his animalistic option of flight. He runs away from these problems and doesn't face them like he should.

Finally, Bigger is scared. Bigger's fear causes him to do things such as attack Gus in the pool hall, burn Mary's body, kill Bessie, and run away and hide from the police. "He kept this knowledge of fear thrust firmly down in him; his courage to live depended upon how successful his fear was hidden from his consciousness." (Wright 8) this shows that Bigger fights Gus because of his fear. Another time when Bigger shows his fear is when he kills Mary out of fear for Mrs. Dalton catching him in his room. After the police found him and tried to capture him for doing all these things, Bigger froze, he became dead to the world that surrounded him. This is another way that Richard Wright conveys his message to the readers.

Richard Wright effectively uses Bigger as a symbol to convey a message to his readers through Bigger's violence, spontaneousness, and fear. Richard Wright uses Bigger as a tool for doing this because he has all these traits that

make it easy to show how someone turns to their animal instincts. This story shows people that they should face their problems, or else many more worse things can happen as a result of fighting, fleeing, or freezing.

A correlational study was used in journal article, Personality Factors Associated with Generalized and Non-Generalized Social Anxiety. The aim of the study was to determine if the participants' scores on measures of generalized and non-generalized social anxiety are predicted by different personality factors. Ninety-five male and female university students with a mean age of 0.6 voluntarily participated in the study.

The participants were to complete two measures of social anxiety, the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS). The SPS and SIAS each consist of 0 scales to assess fears of the participants during social interaction and while being scrutinized during routine activities. Furthermore, they also had to complete two personality scales, the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI). The NEO-FFI consists of 60 items for which the participants had to indicate the degree to which they agreed or disagreed with each item. The items were based on 5 personality dimensions Neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness. The ASI consisted of a 16 item self-report measure of fear of anxiety symptom based on the belief that these symptoms have harmful consequences. The results showed that twenty-two of the twenty-eight correlations showed significant relationships (p0.05). The five NEO-FFI measures of personality showed the lowest correlations while the SPS and SIAS showed the highest correlation (r = 0.78).

These results show that circumscribed social anxiety was mostly predicted by the ASI whereas generalized social anxiety was mostly predicted by neuroticism. These findings suggest that circumscribed social fears are associated with a fear of anxiety symptoms whereas generalized social anxiety is more related to personality dimensions reflecting neuroticism.

Order Custom Social Phobia paper

Nairne et al. briefly touch upon some of the information from the article to help the reader to better understand their point of view in the text. Nairne et al. do not use the findings from the article to convey their point of view. The only information presented in the text is the five NEO-FFI measures of personality extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Nairne et al. use the NEO-FFI measure to describe the different aspects that make up the dimensions of personality. This seems to be the only information that Nairne et al. used from the article as the study itself was a preliminary study for future studies.

The limitations of the study were that the study was performed on limited participants and that the SIAS and SPS scales in this experiment are not diagnostic instruments. The participants in this experiment were university students who only represent a small population of society which means that the results cannot be generalized across all members of society. Furthermore, the scores of the participants who were university students were well below that of social phobics. This further reinforces the notion that one cannot generalize or use the findings presented in the article to understand personality. Secondly, the SIAS and SPS scales used in this experiment are not identical and not diagnostic instruments. The researchers of the experiment counter by saying that researchers believe that social phobia is on a continuum with social anxiety and that everyone experiences it from time to time.

Medea as Woman, Hero and God Four Sources In Euripides play the title role and focus of the play is the foreign witch Medea. Treated differently through the play by different people and at different times, she adapts and changes her character, finally triumphing over her hated husband Jason. She can feasibly be seen as a mortal woman, Aristotles tragic hero figure and even as an exulted goddess. Medeas identity as a weak woman is emphasised at the very start of the play. It is made very clear that she has come to misfortune through no fault of her own and is powerless in her problem (her world has turned to enmity). Being unable to change her situation is an example of her portrayal as a weak woman figure. We are told that she has been crying for days (lies collapsed in agony). Soon after these descriptions of her weeping, the Tutor arrives and informs us that yet more bad news is coming her way (not heard the worst banish them). At this point all the pity is directed towards Medea, shunned by her husband. More than just a cold cunning, Medeas cleverness manifests a sensitivity to other peoples psychological weak points when Creon makes a casual reference to the absolute devotion he feels for his daughter, Medea appeals to him on behalf of her own children and secures the one-day grace period before his decree of banishment takes effect. Unlike other ancient tragedians who used dialogue more abstractly, Euripides places a lot of emphasis on revealing a characters personality through his or her way of maneuvering a conversation. In his characteristically innovative style, Euripides employs the device to suggest that a rise to power by women would similarly unhinge the universe--to contemplate their comeuppance remains as unnatural as a kings murder.

Cindy Sherman was born in New Jersey in the year of 175. She studied in New York at the University college at Buffalo. This is where she began studying painting. She had a keen interest in portraiture from this age. Surprisingly she failed the Photography course, because of technical difficulties. However she later learnt the skills from a different teacher, who was the first person to introduce her to conceptual art. She also took a great interest in altering her appearance to take on the role of various people. She would do this by the use of make-up, clothing and wigs.

She graduated university in 177 and moved to New York with fellow classmate Robert Longo. This is where she began photographing her famous film stills. Most of the images were of Sherman dressing as famous female film stars. She took most of the photographs herself, although some were taken by family and friends.

Sherman never officially gave her images names, therefore it is not clear as to who the portraits are of. This lets the onlooker draw their own conclusions. Summer Book Report

The Outsiders

1. The book that I did my report on is called The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Its was published by the Penguin Group last in 17.

. The main characters in this book were Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, Steve, and the Socs. Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, and Steve were all in a gang that lived on the eastside of their town called the Greasers. The Socs were the rich kids that lived on the West Side of town. Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy were brothers whose mother and father died in a car crash leaving them living together under Darry's supervision. Darry is six foot two and muscular. He does not understand anything unless it is a plain hard fact, but he uses his head. Sodapop always understands everybody and always listens to everybody. Johnny was sixteen years old and had hard black eyes and black hair. Two-Bit is the oldest of the gang and the wisecracker of the bunch. You could not shut him up, he has to get his two bits worth in. Dallas was the wildest of the gang he first got arrested when he was ten. Steve was Sodapops best buddy from grade school. His specialty is fixing cars. Steve and Sodapop both work at a gas station. The Socs are an abbreviation for the socials, which are the rich west-side kids that jump the Greasers.

Custom Essays on Outsiders

. This book was a fictional book.

4. This book was about the rivalry between the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs and the Greasers jumped each other, fought with each other, and had rumbles with each other. One night when Johnny and Ponyboy were walking home from a movie a group of Socs tried to jump them. A Soc grabbed Ponyboys arm and shoved his face in a fountain trying to drown him. The next thing he knew was that he was laying face up in the pavement. "I killed him," said Johnny "I killed that boy." Johnny had killed a Soc named Bob. They were both scared of being caught by the police. They needed help and a plan so the went to Dallas. Dallas told them to hop a train to Windrixville, and to hide in the church on top of Jay Mountain until he got there and to stay out of sight. They stayed there for five days just smoking, reading, and eating bologna sandwiches. When Dallas got there he took them to eat and told them that the police were looking in Texas for them. When Dallas was driving them back to town they saw the church they stayed at on fire and found out that there were kids inside the burning church. Ponyboy and Johnny ran in to get the kids out. They got all of them out, but while Johnny was trying to escape a piece of timber hit his back and he was taken to the hospital. He died in the hospital and Dally is angered by this, and runs off. Later he calls Ponys house to tell him that he robbed a store and is being chased by the cops. They go to meet him, and see him shot down after he pulls a gun on the police.

5. I enjoyed reading The Outsiders because it showed how poor unwanted children survive. It was filled with drama, action, hope, and a little comedy. Although the book is fictional, I believe that people actually have to go through what Greasers do and this book shows how they live. The only problem with this book is that is was not very descriptive.

6. If I were to change the ending of the book I would make it so that Johnny survived. If Johnny had survived then Dallas would not have robbed a store and he would have lived and then Ponyboy and the rest of the Greasers would not be so sad.

There is quite a lot of bias in news articles and it is very effective in stimulating our response to an issue. In the article Rich, famous unite in grief ( West Australian 5 September, 18) bias is included to symathise our response to the victim or victims and to be angry at the people responsible. Reporters can use headlines, Figure of Authority language and the six questions to create a effective slant on an article. All these factors play a huge role in the impact of the bias.

The headline is the first place in an article where the bias first starts. The size of the headline varies on the importance of the article and various poetic tools in a headline give the article a impact and a extremely strong determining point for the bias. The headline Rich, famous unite in grief uses strong words and alliteration and is typed in big, bold, black letters. This and the journalists impacting words make us feel angry at the people responsible for the Swissa disaster.

The way a headline is written and displayed aids in impacting the readers reactions to the article.

A Figure of Authority is used quite often in a article to help convey the bias. All direct quotes from these people are added in with the article to give the reader some proof. As an audience or readers we tend to believe and agree with what these people are saying because they are important and we as readers trust them. In the article Rich, famous unite in grief there is a direct quote from Mr La Motta I had four daughters but only two sons, and I lost them both in just seven months It shows how much pain and loss has happened to one man but then there are many others like him who have lost just as much. This quote makes us feel very sorry for the victims parents and love ones and extremly angry at the people responsible. The quotes in articles influence us to believe things about the people in the article.

Every journalist chooses his/her different style of language to influence the reader in many various ways. Persuasive, descriptive, factual, emotive and poetic are the different language styles used by journalists. Each of theses styles has a different impact on the readers thoughts and responses to an article. In Rich, famous unite in grief an example of this is As grief counsellors helped the families of those killed. This is showing us that the families are helpless and shaterd at the loss of their loved ones. The uses of these writing techniques the journalist is able to create an impacting bias.

As the six questions are mostly factual but they however do contain some bias. They are normally in the introductory paragraph and are very simple the answers to the questions who?, What?, When?, Where?,Why? and How?. In the Rich, famous unite in grief the answers are in the first whew paragraphs which say that no survivors survived the Swissair disaster and that the families are under great grief. This however doesnt have a great impact on the bias but is factual in the article.

Therefore the bias in articles has a great influence on the readers response to the issues in articles. Headline and font, figure of authority and finally the six questions make up the bias in newspaper articles. As each factor plays a different role in impacting the bias. There is definitely a lot of bias in news articles and news just wouldnt be good if it didnt make you feel something for the story.

The three characteristics that I am about to mention are all very important for an epic hero, such as Beowulf or Achilles, who both exhibit the characteristics very well. Courage is a characteristic in Beowulf and Achilles, which all epic heroes must have for them to be classified as heroes. In addition, both of these characters affect the fate of nations, because if they did not, they would not have any significance, and would not have been written about. Finally, both of these characters interact with supernatural beings, who liven up the story, and make it more appealing to the reader.

Both Beowulf and Achilles have great courage and there were many similarities in how they used it, along with some differences. Beowulf and Achilles use their courage to defeat their enemies, as shown with Beowulf against Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, and with Achilles against Hector. All of these instances could have resulted in the hero's death, which is why courage was so important. Beowulf seems to have honor in his courage, such as fighting with no weapons, and leaving Grendel to die by himself, not while being humiliated. On the other hand, Achilles desecrates Hector's body without any honor at all.

Beowulf and Achilles both greatly affected the fate of their nations and changed them forever. Beowulf saves the Danes' kingdom from Grendel, saved his own people from attack, and influenced their lives, thereafter. Achilles helped the Greeks in the Trojan War and his homeland certainly honored him for this. The difference between the two was that Beowulf had a lasting effect on his people and was mourned and remembered for years to come; whereas, Achilles, although he was still remembered by his people, did not seem to foster such love and care from them. However, they both prevented years of turmoil and conflict within their land and abroad, and for that, their ability to affect the fate of nations is very similar.

Beowulf and Achilles both dealt with supernatural beings, although Beowulf dealt with them directly for most of the story; whereas, Achilles dealt with them indirectly, with the exception of his mother, Thetis. Beowulf fought with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, who were all supernatural beings. Apart from his mother, who Achilles conversed with in the story, the Greek gods dealt with Achilles indirectly, such as Athena making Hector stop and fight Achilles. However, Beowulf knew he was dealing with supernatural beings, which he recognized as demons of Hell, and Achilles knew and believed in the various gods, so a similarity between the two was that they both knew they were dealing with supernatural beings.

As I have stated, Beowulf and Achilles are certainly epic heroes because of these characteristics. Although they are similar in many aspects, they also have many differences, which most likely arose because of the different surroundings in which the authors lived. These resulting differences give the epics the ability to entertain the reader in different ways, and they both undoubtedly entertained generations of readers, and may do so for even longer.

Aristotle Quote

Aristotle once said "[w]e cannot learn without pain." I find this statement to be

very true. Without pain, how would we know anything is "real"? Pain is just the

realization that something is real, and something is possible. Pain can be physical or

Help with essay on Aristotle Quote

emotional, depending on the situation. Physical pain is not the only entrance to learning.

Emotional pain is probably more knowledgeable than physical pain itself, because

sometimes it lasts longer, and leaves a deeper impression.

My first example of this is simply a child learning new things through experience.

A parent tells a child not to touch a hot stove, because it will burn. This child does not

know what "burn" is, and is curious to find out. This child sees the stove, and it is

tempting. They reach up and touch it, and a hot, searing pain rushes through them. This is

their first step to learning what a "stove" is, and what "hot" means. Had this child not

touched the stove, they would not know what this "hot" feels like, and they would not

have learned why to not touch a stove while it is burning.

Incorporating my own experience into an example, when I was a young child, no

older than one, I was told not to drink from this bottle with a long straw on it. Although I

do not remember my exact thoughts at the time, I'm assuming that my first thought was

that since this can contained a straw, why could I not drink from it? I went behind our

television and drank some of it, disregarding my parents' warnings, and later on

discovered it was VCR cleaner, which was poisonous. My parents had to take me to the

hospital and get it flushed out of my system, but I learned what "pain" felt like, and that

you do not always drink from things which contain straws.

Another example is of a person's "first love", or "first heartbreak". Although we

do not truly have a heart break, we do feel emotional pain. Without this pain, though, we

might not learn to not give our hearts out so easily. But, "heartbreak" is not always simply

"love", or relationships. It can also occur when someone close to a person passes away.

When my grandmother passed away, I felt this extreme emotional "emptiness", which later

turned into emotional pain. I felt that I had not spent enough time with her, and that I did

not appreciate her enough. This, in turn, made me appreciate the people around me, such

as my parents and other grandparents, more. Thus, I learned a lesson to never disregard

those close relationships you have.

Lastly, the war in Iraq is a large example. George W. Bush saw these Iraqi people

as a threat, which some of them might have been, but he sent troops which killed more

than necessarily. Innocent bystanders were killed, because the United States did not know

if they were dangerous or not, or they merely got in the way. Our army killed with what

seemed little remorse, until it later hit that we had, indeed, killed many innocent people,

while the true "criminals" were still out there, in hiding. Since there was no way to take

this back, one would think this would be a way to learn that sometimes, going into

something without planning it better is not the right idea, but apparently it was not,

because we sent our troops right back out to kill and be killed. I guess that's the real

lesson we're being taught here, "kill or be killed."

The Crucible and "The Lottery" have some similarities and many differences. While The Crucible is a four - act play and "The Lottery" is about a four page short story, they have some things in common. While they both are based on a society in a small town, there are a number of differences between them. The similarities, differences, and examples of each will be compared and contrasted in the following paragraphs.

There are a number of differences between The Crucible and "The Lottery." One such difference is the overall mood of the town. In The Crucible there was mass hysteria throughout Salem because everyone could have been suspected of being a witch or a partner with the devil. In "The Lottery" everybody in the village was calm and tranquil because the lottery was a normal thing in their society that they had done every year of their lives. Another difference is the setting of the two stories. "The Lottery" had a bright, pretty, and sunny setting, with "the flowers blossoming profusely and the grasses richly green." The Crucible, however, had a dark and gloomy setting, with the livestock and crops dying and the people wearing dull clothes. Yet another big contrast between the two is the involvement of religion. While The Crucible was based on the Puritan religion and theocracy, "The Lottery" had no mention of religion in the story. These three are a few of the dissimilarities between these stories.

There are some likenesses amidst all of these differences. One similarity is the tradition that both the stories show. The Crucible shows the rich tradition in the Puritan church and society, and "The Lottery" is a yearly tradition that has been going on for very many years. Another likeness is in the uncertainty of the citizens of who will be prosecuted or killed next.

"The Lottery" was just a random act that nobody knew who would ultimately die, as in The Crucible so many people have been prosecuted that everyone is a suspect and nobody is sure that they themselves would not be prosecuted. These stories both have a very public place where people are killed or hanged. The suspected witches in The Crucible were hanged in front of the townspeople in the middle of the town, and the "winner" of the lottery was stoned to death by his fellow townspeople. These are a few similarities within these stories.

There are some more differences between the two tales, such as the support of their neighbors. In The Crucible, mostly toward the end, the citizens began to unite and support the people being hung. However, in "The Lottery," there was no support for the damned person, for their neighbors were the ones doing the killing. Also, in "The Lottery" the person who died did not die for a reason or with respect. The people who died in The Crucible died for their pride and would not confess to something that they did not do and therefore died with respect. Finally, one last difference is in the driving force of each. The lottery's driving force was the tradition that there was always a lottery and people took it for granted as a usual day. The Crucible was driven by the abuse of power of the judges and the girls.

History

Erling Persson, founder of H&M, started out as a salesman in Vasteras, Sweden. While traveling in the United States, he was inspired by a new type of clothing store. The store had high turnover in merchandise and kept its prices low. Upon his return to Sweden, he opened the first Hennes store on September 1th, 147. It was named Hennes (the Swedish word for hers) because it only sold womens clothes.

Hennes expanded steadily during the 150s and 60s. When the company was seeking to expand in 168, Erling Persson bought Mauritz Widforss, a hunting and gun store located in Sergelgatan, Stockholm. A stock of mens clothing came with the store, so the company began selling mens and womens clothes and changed its name to Hennes & Mauritz.

Since 18, H&M has continued to rapidly expand with Erling Perssons son, Stefan Persson, as Managing Director. In March of 000, we opened our first US store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Cheap College Papers on The World

Due to our overwhelming success here in the US, we will continue our aggressive expansion. Currently, H&M has over 4,000 employees. We sell clothes and cosmetics in over 800 stores in 14 countries worldwide. Last year sales amounted to 4.4 billion dollars.

Concept

The H&M concept is fashion and quality at the best price. Our design and buying departments create the H&M collection and make it possible to offer the latest fashion for women, men, teens and kids as well as cosmetics at the best price. We offer a wide range of products, and new goods are delivered to our stores every day.

A number of measures have been introduced to secure and raise the quality of our goods. H&M has the resources to carry out careful and effective quality control. Our garments are manufactured under good working conditions without the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals or harmful substances. H&M does not own any factories, but works with approximately 00 suppliers in Europe and Asia.

H&Ms code of conduct outlines the demands we make of our suppliers. We aim only to work with suppliers who can live up to our high production standards.

Our primary objective is to ensure that our customers get a good deal. We also believe that shopping at H&M should be an easy and pleasant experience. Great importance is attached to the layout of the stores and the way in which the garments are presented. It should also be easy for our customers to find an H&M store, so the principle of best business locations applies whenever opening new stores.

H&M is Europes leading fashion retailer, and our proven business model recently earned us a spot on of Forbes lists -- The Worlds 400 Best Companies and The Worlds Best Retailers.

Marketing our own brand for women, men, teens, kids and cosmetics, we offer fashion and quality at the best prices. But thats just part of our story. A major reason weve been so successful is our unique work environment based on flexibility and common sense, where employees are valued, supported and, most importantly, heard.

In March 000, we opened our first US store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Since then, weve begun rapidly expanding. Were looking for talented and motivated sales associates, department managers, store managers, and store-line visual merchandisers that can start and grow with the company.

I had taken Introduction to Acting last semester and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to take Advanced Acting this semester. The closeness the class develops after they have worked together is something you can hardly experience in another class at college.

I came into the class with some knowledge of acting and I expected to learn as much more as I possibly could. I had done some plays in junior high school, but they were all not the kind that I could say I did with experience. I wanted to know how to connect to my character. My main concern was knowing how to portray myself as the person I am playing. We definitely worked on that in class. I think all the questions that were asked to be answered painted a clear picture of who our characters are. For example, making a history for our character, why is he/she saying this?, who is he/she talking to?, what kind of setting?, etc... All these questions helped me to personalize my characters and to therefore do a better job at performing them.

I think from the time I first came into class till now, the end of the semester, I have definitely changed. We did our first performances without knowing much about what was expected, but as we went along it was explained that what was missing or what needed to change to make the scene work. By the time I was doing my final scenes I already knew what was to be expected. I am not saying I became a professional because I know that takes years (or just plain talent), but I did learn a lot and I am more knowledgeable that any one else at Baruch.

Along with the professor I have to say that I had a lot of help from my various Self-Evaluation (Cont'd...)

partners. When two people think about the scene the result is much better than if I were doing it myself. Your partner can tell you where your lines might not be working the way your saying them, whereas for you alone it might be difficult to tell. You can also play off your partners emotions better than you can play off the reactions of some imaginary person on the wall. I also have to say that our partners were chosen almost very accurately for us. When the scene partners get along the scene becomes more enriching.

What pleased me about this class is that we had a lot more performing to do than the last class. I thing that is a challenge; to remember all those lines and emotions and not get confused. I like the fact that we did monologues. That was definitely something I have never done and it was a nice experience.

I don't know if I want to pursue acting as a career, but it is something that I would like to consider part time. Not so much television or anything, I know I can't do that, but theater is definitely an option I'd like to keep open. What I' like best are the comedies. I would love to do more comedic plays. I feel I can do my best in those rather than serious plays.

I feel theater has an important role at Baruch because Baruch is a business school. What I mean is that students can get bored really easily of all these classes about accounting and financing, and to make their experience at Baruch more fulfilling, so they won't turn out like zombies, I feel there should be theater classes at Baruch. Theater is like real life. People need to experience at least some type of theater, if not acting then watching a performance, so they can understand real life a little better.

Lately I have been filling out a lot of applications and trying to update my resume so I can return to the work force after having my two children. With that in mind, I have always put down when asked that I am unemployed. The truth is, I am employed. I have a career that has constant deadlines, many times limited resources, involves management, finances, psychology, medicine, political, catering, janitorial, and so many more other fields I cannot think of most of the time. I am a mother.

Now granted, I do not get paid in a traditional sense of the word. Right now, my paychecks come in the form of things like a wide drooly grin from my son, a stuffed bear being thrust at me while my daughter climbs into my lap, and the few hours I have of quiet time to study for classes. I get no vacations, no benefits, and no sick days. I have two bosses who somehow manage to micromanage everything in the house, including myself. They are not very good at communication, do not know yet how to work as a team, often start me on projects that they then abandon, and generally make it so the 'office politics' revolve solely around them. There are no meetings to discuss goals but I am expected to help them achieve what they want to accomplished and there is never an opportunity for that goal to be long term. At times, my two bosses have different agendas that I must conform to at the same time.

As a mother, I must have many skills that any corporation must have. First, I am Human Resources. All labor is taken care of by me or delegated by me to someone else if it is needed. Often, my bosses would rather I keep our little labor problems 'in house.' Second, I am the Accounting Department. I am responsible for maintaining all of the assets and seeing to the purchase of new ones when needed and the upkeep of the current ones. Third, I am the Purchasing Department. I must go out, when my bosses allow me to in between their workloads for me, and make sure that all of the needed resources are available. Fourth, I am Food Services and the Lunch Room. It is my job to make sure that there are food items on hand for all employees and certain things that my bosses like. I am the Waste and Risk Management Departments as well as the Accident Prevention Department. I must make sure that there are no unsafe conditions and see to the accident reports when they come in. Lastly, I must handle the Continuing Education and Benefits. I am constantly working on innovative ways to help my bosses learn new things and to more effectively manage where I am able to do so, though always under the constant supervision of my Executives. I must also see to it that when my bosses have put in a full day of their hard work as Executives, they are compensated and taken care of until the next work day. My job requires me to take my work home with me and to be on call at all times. The only benchmarks I have are those that others who are not even part of my corporation have put forth and it does not seem to matter if I have met or exceeded them.

Does my career now sound difficult? Maybe, although I do not look at it that way. I am somewhere that the work I do matters because the success or failure of what I do has a direct impact on the 'company.' I may not be employed in the most conventional of senses but I definitely have a career right now that is just as demanding as those of my peers.
