Theories of management.

Back in the early part of the 0th century, organisations had very little structure, and the workers simply did tasks the easiest way, and not the most efficient way. Decisions that needed to be made were simply made on guesses or hunches, with no real thought of what would benefit the company and production efficiency.

Now days due to 4 management theories that have evolved over time, organisations usually have a very defined structure, with managers to make all the important decisions. Before these decisions are made, much consideration and thought goes into the matter, and a final decision will be made, and this decision will more than likely be of benefit to the organisation. There are four main principles that have been created, all of which define processes and ways in which decisions can be made. These four principles are Scientific Management, General Administrative, The Quantitative Approach and Organisational behaviour. In 111, Frederick Winslow Taylor published 'Principles of Scientific Management'. These principles, which formed the basis for Scientific Management, uses scientific method to define the best and most efficient way for a job to be done. Taylor was a mechanical engineer, and he was appalled at how slow the workers were. He thought that if the job was done a more efficient way, rather than the easy way it was currently being done, production could quite possibly be increased. This resulted in him publishing the guidelines, in the hope that efficiency of the workers would increase. One flaw with scientific management is that it treats people as machines.

General Administrative management formed from two main peoples ideas. Henri Fayol and Max Weber. Fayol described management as a set of functions, planning, organising. commanding, coordinating, and controlling. Fayol's 14 principles formed the basis for General Administrative. Weber's ideal organisation was one of bureaucracy, where there was a division of labour, a clearly defined hierarchy, detailed rules & regulations and impersonal relationships. Weber regarded rationality, predictability and authoritarianism very highly. These idea's created the basis for many of today's organisations, as most organisations have a clear hierarchy, and some rules. The General Administrative approach however, does inhibit creativity and new ideas.

The Quantitative approach uses statistics, optimisation models, information models and computer simulations in order to make statistically the correct decision. While these tools are often very effective in decision making, managers find it difficult to relate to models and computers, in relation to real life situations. Therefore this approach to management is not the most widely used principle.

Organisational Behaviour is concerned with the actions of people at work. It promotes motivation, leadership, teamwork and conflict management. The Hawthorne studies were extremely important to the ideas behind Organisational behaviour. In 14 a study began of the effect of illumination on the efficiency of workers. Despite varying levels of light, over time production continued to increase. It was found that the behaviour of a person was closely related to their sentiments, and that group influences have a significant effect on an individuals behaviour. Not surprisingly after this was found, a new emphasis was placed on human behaviour in the functioning of a company, resulting in the human relations movement, where people believed very strongly in employee satisfaction.

All of these principles of management are used today to at least some extent, and different organisations use different forms of management. For example Macdonald's uses Scientific management mainly, as each task has a specified procedure, with specific times to cook food. This does however limit the amount of creativity that an individual can put into the job. There is one way of doing things, and one way only, leaving no room at all for creativity and new ideas. Whilst Macdonald's uses mostly scientific management, they also use some of the principles of bureaucracy- they have a defined hierarchy, predictability, and a high level of efficiency. As with Macdonald's, most organisations do not solely use one principle of management, but uses portions of many types in order to run their company efficiently.

There are children who go to class every day under the influence of drugs, these drugs are prescribed by doctors and are pushed by schools and courts. These drugs are used to control childrens minds, moods, emotions and behavior.

The political drug-pushing racket is getting millions of kids hooked on prescription drugs like Ritalin and Aderol; these drugs are a gateway to other narcotics. Between 10 and 1, domestic sales of methylphenidate (Ritalin) increased nearly 500%. Amphetamine (Aderol) production has increased ,000%, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration said. (Data Tables and Figures)

An article in the NY Post said, "some students faked the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder to get a Ritalin prescription. The student, who pulled the scam to get Ritalin to help him study for his high-school tests, later started selling the pills to college roommates for a profit." (Langdon)

Terrance Woodworth, the DEAs deputy director of diversion control, told a congressional subcommittee that Ritalin is being used on campus today in the same way amphetamines were used in the 160s - as a study aid and party drug, the NY Post reported. (Langdon) "Adolescents dont have to rob a pharmacy, forge a prescription or visit the local drug dealer to acquire methylphenidate - they have little difficulty obtaining it from a friend or classmate," he said.

Ritalin is a powerful stimulant that can produce tremors, hallucinations, paranoid delusions and other severe medical consequences, including death. The most common side effects include an increased heart rate, high blood pressure, dizziness, drowsiness and changes in vision. Lesser effects include chest pain, fever, joint pain, skin rash or hives, and uncontrolled movements of the body.

The political drug pushers are destroying the minds and health of American children with addictive and potentially harmful drugs. Marijuana, which kids shouldnt be using either, doesnt produce any of these dangerous symptoms.

Dr. Nadine Lambert, a developmental psychologist at the University of California at Berkeley, found that children on Ritalin are three times more likely to develop a taste for cocaine. Ritalin is like coming off coke - you crash, Aderol is not nearly so bad. Its much cleaner. Nadine said. (Langdon)

Ritalin can be popped, snorted and even dissolved and injected for a high comparable with a caffeine-jolt or even a slower-acting form of cocaine. Selling for $ to $0 a pill on the black market, it is "as easy to get as candy". (Bone) Because of the black-market value of these drugs, there are reports of school employees stealing the drugs and selling to dealers who in turn sell them to kids. Ritalin is popular with kids as young as 1 or 14. The kids who have prescriptions give it to their friends because it makes them popular.

The Drug Enforcement Administration found that 0 to 50 per cent of teenagers in drug-treatment centers in Indiana, South Carolina and Wisconsin had used methylphenidate to get high, although not as their principal drug.

Hardly any American public-school child escapes exposure to this pervasive drug use which encourages more parents to drug their kids and is increasingly enticing children into trying Ritalin and other politically approved drugs for recreation or perceived performance benefits.

Class-action lawsuits have been filed in federal courts in California and New Jersey, alleging that Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., the manufacturer of Ritalin, and the American Psychiatric Association have conspired to create and expand the market for the drug. The drug cartel responsible in this case is not some shady underworld drug cartel, but the political system, the public schools, child protection services, physicians and judges.

If Sharks Were People

"If Sharks were people," asked the daughter of the innkeeper of Mr. E., "would they be nicer to the little fish than grown-ups are to us?"

"Of course," he answered. If sharks were people, they would have massive boxes built for the little fishes, with all kinds of foods in them, both meat as well as vegetables. The sharks would insure that the boxes would always have fresh water in them, and they would certainly meet all the measures of sanitation and health required. For example, if a little fish injured its fin, then the sharks would immediately provide a bandage, so that the little fish would not die before its time. So that the little fishies would not get depressed, there would also be huge water festivals, because happy fish actually taste better than sad ones.

Naturally there would be schools in these massive boxes, in which the little fishies would learn how to swim into the jaws of the sharks. For example, they would need geography courses, so that the little fishies could find the big sharks, who would be lazily lying about at various places in the ocean. But the main point of the schools would be in the moral training, the socialization of the little ones. They would be taught that it would be the greatest and most beautiful honor to offer themselves as a martyrs; and they would have to believe in the sharks, above all when the sharks promised to be working on a glorious future for the little fishies. The teachers would instruct the little ones to believe that this glorious future would be certain only if the little ones learned obedience to authority. Additionally, the little fishies would be taught to guard themselves against all low, materialistic, egoistic, and Marxist temptations and immediately inform the sharks whenever the little ones saw any of their friends display such tendencies.

Do my essay on If Sharks Were People CHEAP !

If sharks were people, there would natrually be wars fought among them, in order to conquer foreign fish boxes and little foreign fish. The wars would be led by the sharks' own little fishies, and the little fish would be taught that there was a big difference between them and the little fishies of other sharks, huge differences. The little fishies, all of whom would be kept relatively ignorant, would be informed through shark-approved media about what the foreign fish were up to, and therefore all schools of fish would remain silent to each other in their own language, since they were properly and accurately informed of all they needed to know by the sharks.

There would also be no need for the little fishies to get involved in anything of importance, since the sharks take care of them for their own good; and it would also be for their own good that the little fishies didn't mix with the foreign fishies. One never could tell how that might effect the various schools.

Each little fishy that killed another, foreign, other-language-speaking fishy in

the war would be given an honor and a medal made out of seaweed and told that he was a hero.

And naturally there would be an Art, if sharks were people. There would be beautiful pictures in which the sharks' teeth in their gleamingly neat rows would be portrayed, the insides of the jaws presented as pure and enticing pleasure gardens into which the heroic little fishies would so willingly be streaming, as if going intoxicated into an amusement park on a three-day pass.

There would certainly be a religion in the ocean, if sharks were people. In the churches named for sharks, they would teach the little fishies that life would really begin only when they were finally down inside the bellies of the sharks.

And the notion of egalitarianism among little fishies (as it is now) would cease. Some of the little fish would receive official posts and be made bigger, thus being placed above the others in status, which would suit the sharks just fine, since the sharks actually prefer larger portions per serving. And these bigger, post-given fish would be put in charge of keeping order and stability among the littler ones by becoming teachers, officers, engineers of fish boxes, and so forth.

In short, there would finally be a culture in the ocean, if sharks were people.

Frosts Mending Wall vs. Floyds The Wall

Essay written by Luke Bialek

From Robert Frosts Mending Wall to Pink Floyds Another Brick in the Wall, humankind erects and maintains real and symbolic barriers to protect and defend opposing stances, beliefs and territories. Although each wall is different they serve the same purpose and both Frost and Floyd oppose them. Robert Frosts Mending Wall is a very popular poem. This poem consists of two characters the narrator and his neighbor. In this poem the two neighbors are mending a stone wall that separates their property. The wall mending has been a pastime of the neighbors for many years and occurs every spring. Over the winter the wall has fallen victim to both hunters and the frozen ground and, therefore, contains gaps that must be filled.

In the poem the narrator questions the sense of even mending the wall . He concludes that neither of the farms contain animals, only trees, which would be enough of a boundary. There is no physical need for the wall, so why go through the trouble of fixing it every year for no apparent reason. Although the narrator is right the ignorant neighbor insists that they mend the wall by saying Good fences make good neighbors.(Frost) The neighbor repeats this saying although he doesnt know why the wall is necessary nor does he know why it will make them better neighbors . Frost is criticizing the ignorance of the neighbor here. Mending Wall, although it doesnt appear it on the surface, almost parallels to a popular Pink Floyd song, Another Brick in the Wall. The speakers of the song are students and the poem is directed towards teachers. In this song, as in Mending Wall, a barrier is discussed, but this time it is a phsycological barrier instead of a physical one. This barrier has been put up by society and is being built up by the teachers. The students are calling out against this building up of the wall.

As it is stated in the song

All in all youre(teachers) just another brick in the wall.(Floyd) This barrier being put up is restraining the students freedom of thought, a process that has gone on and become reinforced over a long period of time. Floyd has realized this barrier and is calling out against it as he says

We dont need no thought control.(Floyd)

The barrier put up by education is just as unnecessary to Floyd as the stone wall is to Frost. The teachers in the song are doing the same thing that the neighbors father did in the poem, reinforced and insured a lack of communication and ,therefore, ignorance in the next generation. The neighbor is a perfect example of the product of these barriers, he doesnt know truly know why the wall must be there but he never questions his fathers words and understands that the wall is really keeping him and his neighbor from having a better friendship. Frost describes the neighbor like an old-stone savage armed. He moves in darkness as it seems to me.(Frost) This darkness is the ignorance that he displays as he mends the fence. Floyd relates to this dark ignorance with the No dark sarcasm in the classroom!(Floyd) The neighbors father and they teachers parallel and the neighbor is their product.

In these two works both speakers are attempting to halt the reinforcement of ignorance and the limiting of thought. These speakers each represent the view and message of their writers. Both Frost and Floyd want to break down the barriers set up by humankind. These barriers are what keep people from questioning or even contemplating things that happen in every day life. These barriers are often subconsciously put up and strengthened by society and may control ones thought. These techniques may be used by governments and other institutions to insure that someone doesnt know too much or uncover certain conspiracies. Frost and Floyd have provided us with two very different situations in which this technique may be used as a warning to help us to prevent the further control of our thought and to help us eventually attain freedom of thought.

Although they are two diferent forms of literature both Frosts Mending Wall and Floyds Another Brick in the Wall send the same message. That message is to think.

There are numerous factors that influence the location where people choose to live and the numbers in that specific area. In New Zealand, the relief of the land, weather climate throughout the year, employment availability, and urban centre locations are major aspects determining the distribution of people across the country.

The relief of the land has a strong correlation to the concentration of people in an area. People tend to live in coastal lowlands where the land doesn't fluctuate as much making it easier to build homes in close proximity to one another. The major cities in New Zealand (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin) are all located on flatland relatively close to the ocean for easy access to ports, public beaches, fishing areas, sea views...etc. 75% of New Zealand's population is located on coastal plains despite the fact that only a small portion of the land is flat and near the sea. Because New Zealand is situated right on top of tectonic plates a greater part of the country is made up of mountainous terrain and rough hill country. These areas tend to only have zero to ten percent of the population located in those areas because of the difficulties that come with living in the area. Recently however, the mountains and volcanoes are serving as a tourist attraction therefore job opportunities are created. Also places close to volcanoes are growing in population numbers because of the fertility of the soil in the area increasing farming opportunities.

Weather conditions are another natural factor greatly influencing the populations spread around the country. People prefer to live in areas where the climate is warmer, which is why 75% of New Zealanders are situated in the North Island. Despite the fact that weather conditions can often change at irregular periods during the day in the northern part of the country, it is favoured over the cold environment in the South Island. Snow is more common in the south island making mountainous areas like Queenstown near the Southern Alps ideal skiing resorts and tourist attractions. The amount of rain and wind in an area also affects where people choose to live. Even though Wellington is the capital city, Auckland still has a larger population and this may be due to the windy citys reputation.

A cultural feature that has an effect on the population distribution is the location of various urban centres. In these areas better employment and education institutions are established in comparison to those available in the country as well as easy access to major airports/ports for travel in, out and around the country. 85% of New Zealand's population live in urban areas. These include towns and cities in various places across the country (not just coastal). Another reason for people living in cities is because of the family connections and ties. Some people live in the same areas their whole lives and for generations to come. People tend to live close to their relations, which is why in some areas there are more of a certain ethnic group then others.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Population Distribution in New Zealand

Obviously the greater the population the greater the need for different jobs to provide for those people. In major cities the chance of getting a well-paying job is favourably higher because of the number of businesss, factories and services to supply a growing city (Auckland alone inhabits a quarter of New Zealand's population). There is a rising need for jobs and people wanting to join the workforce to make more money and as a result more and more cities and towns are being populated (and less people around more isolated areas).

The growing trend that these factors influence may not impact on the whole percentage of the population too radically in the near future but in a few decades or so New Zealands major cities may find that they are over-populated therefore the problem will need to be addressed and a conclusion issued (Aucklands traffic problem for example is making it harder and harder for people to get where they need to go on time).

Geometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with the relations, properties, and the measurements of solids, surfaces, lines, points, and angles. The mathematician Euclid is often considered the Father of geometry. He is most well known for his book, The Elements. He was also the author of the most successful textbook next to Autolycusi's Sphere.

Euclid was born around 5 BC and died about 65 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. His birthplace is unknown. Very little is known about Euclid's life because the name Euclid was very popular at that time5. He was most likely a Greek that traveled to Alexandria to learn and teach. In Alexandria, he most likely founded a school of mathematics. Also, it is a possibility that he studied with Plato's students due to his familiarity to the geometry of Eudoxus and Theaetetus5.

Euclid wrote his famous book The Elements when he was around thirty years old. It is quite long, spanning thirteen books. In it, Euclid compiled and systematically arranged many of the major mathematical results known during his time, besides adding his own findings. His book makes up the core of basic mathematics even today. Unfortunately, no original copies from his time have been found. However, some fragments of The Elements have been found in potshards in Egypt and on pieces of papyrus dating around 100 BC. The earliest copy of his book dates around 888 BC. The Elements has been used in schools until 1014.

The beginning of his book starts with a list of definitions, postulates, and axioms, which he used to prove proposition after proposition. His method has served as the standard for scientific argumentation for other generations (proofs). The volumes are Books 1-6 Plane Geometry. Books 7- Number Theory. Book 10 Euxodus' Theory of Irrational numbers. Books 11-1 Solid Geometry.

Help with essay on Euclid

The first five postulates in his book are these1

1. (It is possible) to draw a straight line from any point to any point.

. (It is possible) to produce (continue) a finite straight line in a straight line.

. (It is possible) to describe a circle with any center and distance (radius).

4. All right angles are equal to each other.

5. If a straight line falling on two straight lines make the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which are the angles less than the two right angles.

The first three postulates are postulates of construction. These postulates assume the existence of points, lines, and circles as well as other geometric objects that can be derived from the fact that these exist. The fourth and the fifth are very different from the first three. The fourth postulate look obvious, but in truth, it assumes that space is homogeneous. The fifth postulate is one of the more famous ones and basically states that one and only one line can be drawn through a point parallel to a given line5.

Euclid also included axioms, which Euclid called 'common notations'. Common notations are not specific geometric properties, but are instead, general assumptions that are the basis of mathematics and which allows it to continue to be a deductive science5. His five common notations are1

1. Things which are equal to the same thing are equal to one another.

. If equals be added to equals, the wholes are equal.

. If equals be subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.

4. Things which coincide with one another are equal to one another.

5. The whole is greater than the part.

Euclid was often portrayed as a kind, fair, and patient man who was quick to help others and to encourage and praise them. However, he was rather sarcastic as well. One well known story about his sarcasm was when one of his students complained that there was no point use for any of the mathematics he was learning. Euclid then called his slave to give the boy a coin because "he must make gain out of what he learns." Euclid was man of great wisdom who has greatly affected, modern mathematics. He will live on in the books of history forever.

Race and racism are two different words, have two different meanings, but somehow work together to prove a point. The problem is even though they begin with the same letters the meanings behind each can be harmful if used in the wrong context. What some people believe to be true is actually what they were brought up to know as the truth. As I think about this subject I will try to look at both views and see ignorance and intolerance, as well as objective views and outlooks. Let's say 100 years ago there was slavery. The black people were indentured servants to the white. In 00 this is arguably not to be tolerated here in the U.S. Other Cultures still live like this, I feel sad that girls are sold for a families well being. In some cultures girls are given to townies and do hard labor plus they are sexually abused and assaulted. These girls can be 8- years old and get paid 0 to 60 dollars in a South African culture. This amount is for one years work. Think about our culture girls go to school and are educated. There are equal rights for men and women. America really has is going on if you think about it.

Race is a group whether you are black, white, orange, and yellow, green, whatever. Some people will simply hate a group because they are different. Is this right? No of course not, but some people are raised to hate due to the way they are raised. I feel we are all equal. What really makes one person better than the other? Well for one thing going to school with different races you get to see how people interact with each other. You can tell by comments who is a true friend because they like you for who you are, not what you can or cannot do for them. We live in a society that has a big mixture of races. I like to think that I get to know a person before I judge them.

Racism is where you single out a group whether it is for color, religion or even status in our society. In America we are taught to believe that united we stand and divided we fall. This is true because a group of people versus one person has strength, courage and bonding. I believe we can overcome racism but it has to start with a simple reminder that humans are just that. We are not aliens or dogs or just fabric on a flagpole. We have feelings and we make mistakes. This is what we should be teaching our kids. I think people who are racist are not American. They have no right to pledge allegiance to a flag that stands for the biggest mixing pot in the world. People came to America to be free and live a life worth living. We are taught English as a first language and expect to be spoken to in a non-violent way. Unfortunately this is my theory and not the way the world really is. On MTV alone the violence and the way that black people are portrayed are gangsters with attitudes and hootchie mamas on their arms. Gold chains dripping of their necks and language that even my mom would not tolerate. White people in most videos are not behaving in the same manner. So does this make the white people superior? No, just viewed in a different group.

When I think of a ghetto or the projects I think of a black society, when really there are Mexicans, Whites, blacks and other ethnic groups there. I have friends of different nationalities and color. I play baseball and we are a group working as one. Once I come off the field sometimes I feel as though the group is gone and I am alone. Everyone goes back to their own group of friends and personalities. This is how I would explain the Monolistic and Pluralistic societies.

Write my Essay on My views on Raceism for me

To overcome our differences we must treat each other on a level playing field. Sure one person will always be funnier, prettier, younger, older, more educated, etc. But this does not give anyone of them the right to be unfair and treat me or anybody else with disrespect. I'm not saying we all have to be friends and love each other, just be nice and act like the person next to you really is human and has feelings.

There will also always be various levels of educated people and societies that live among only there own. As a whole we should all try to be one group that stands together in triumph and tragedy and work together to be a sane and more equal group of Americans
