Love and Decision Making

Love impairs decision making. This statement is one of truth although the victim of the impairment does not want to admit the fault. Obviously love holds precedence in "A Doll's House" yet when decisions have to be made, love can also cause mistakes. Love requires you to make decisions with someone else in mind, thus priority lies in fulfilling another person's happiness and dreams rather than your own. In Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" a perfect example of love's biased opinion unfolds.

Nora, who gives the impression that she "wears the pants in the relationship (www. Allsands.com)," manipulates people and lies in order to obtain money, with her undaunted love for Torvald as her one and only justification for her crimes. The entire story leads up to an legendary discovery in the final acts of the play. According to one literary review Nora's "epiphany" is that "…throughout the last eight years of her life, she has been blind to who is in control of the marriage (www.Allsands.com)." Once Nora understands that she cannot influence Torvald as much as she had previously believed, she reaches her epiphany.

Not only does Nora risk her own integrity to assist Torvald, she also unwittingly allows him to treat her with ruthless disrespect. Torvald controls Nora's life economically, and subjects her to verbal and emotional abuse as he blames Nora's scandalous behavior on incompetence because she is a female. He also dominates her physically by initiating sexual relations even when Nora refuses his intimacy, "What's that? You're joking, my little Nora! You won't…? Am I not your husband (Ibsen 55-56)?" Torvald believes that as Nora's husband he is entitled to "have her" physically when he desires and is very surprised to discover that Nora does not share this belief.

He reinforces his attitude about women by stating, "That is like a woman!" when Nora tells him of the purchases she has made and by calling her a "spendthrift (Ibsen 4)." Torvald undermines Nora once again as she states, "everything I think of seems so silly and insignificant" and he responds with "Does my little Nora acknowledge that at last (Ibsen 6)?" Yet his condescending attitude is one that Nora tolerates with absolute acceptance as Nora succumbs to Torvald's relentless control when she states , "Everything you do is quite right, Torvald (Ibsen 55)."

Each of these situations show prime examples of how Nora uses her love for Torvald to try to better her situation. Her life is completely centered around Torvald's wishes and concerns rather than achieving and maintaining a mutual relationship based on love and respect. Ibsen uses "A Doll's House" to show that seemingly "happy" marriages can be complete and utter farces, yet also shows that these relationships can be restricted and remedied when the abused person exhibits individuality and control over their own life.

The Nazis made valuable use of the time they had in parliament and became a strong party. When the Munich putsch failed in September 1, they learnt that they would have to try to gain power by lawful means. They used propaganda to gain support and also came up with a 5-point program that appealed to everyone.

Germany tried to pay the reparations by printing more money but when that failed, America gave them loans to ease the economic problems. At the time of the loans, America was financially secure but in 1 the Wall Street Crash sent America into depression causing them to recall their loans. Having to repay the money put Germany into greater financial difficulty and they had to try unpopular economic policies.

The Depression derived from the Wall Street Crash, when people rushed to sell their shares because they realized the companies were doing badly. Thousands of businesses and people were ruined. This affected Germany because America withdrew its loans and the German economy collapsed. Millions were left unemployed. The new Weimar government broke down and people were ready to listen to groups like Hitlers Nazis, who promised a strong government and a better way of life. People who had never been interested in politics before found themselves listening to extremist groups because the government had collapsed. The Depression was a tremendous piece of good luck for the Nazis, because it enabled them to get the majority of the vote in Germany (4.%).

During the Depression the German public was not so concerned with the detailed aims of the Nazis when in power. They just wanted a new government and leader who could help Germany from the great Depression.

The Depression led to high unemployment because factories had closed down, and farmers and many businessmen could not sell their goods.

The reparation payment in particular caused great difficulties for the government and the people. When Germany failed to make a payment in 1, the French and Belgium army marched in and took control of the Ruhr, a key industrial area of Germany. The Germans responded with passive resistance but that again was expensive.

The Treaty of Versailles made it almost impossible for Germany to recover financially, largely because all Germany's colonies were taken and they were made to pay reparations. In order to try to pay the reparations, Germany started to print money and ended up with hyperinflation. The economic instability added to the political instability.

The Nazis cleverly delivered the idea that if they came to power there would be something for everyone. For example farmers were promised higher prices for their goods and shopkeepers were offered protection against big businesses.

The Nazis, now more organized and efficient, were ready for this opportunity to gain power and made promises of jobs and bread.

After reading a good book the reader's view of life's and life's complications and obligations should be clearer, at least for a time. How was your reading clarified your understand of people, institution, life and its confusion?

I believe that after reading " Dead Man Walking" I have a much clearer view of life, its complications and its obligations. It also gave me a better understanding of people and institutions. I have realized that some people are willing to help others during hard times. It showed that people actually believe in the statement " Its better to give than receive".

This book offered useful information into the system of death penalties and the people behind it. Throughout the novel, Sister Prejean recounts her experience as a spiritual adviser to three men and shows the reader the process of it. As a new reader the book offers great insight and influence to the mind. It arouses to me new information of life behind bars and the procedures that placed them there.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Dead Man Walking

Appointed spiritual advisor, Sister Helen Prejean was offered the chance to become a pen pal to one of the death row in mates. Unlike the others, Prejean had no hesitation to the offer, " I say, sure. The invitation seems to fit with my work in St. Thomas…"(Prejean ). This was very unusual, the services of a nun are known to extend not only to the reachable people, but also to those who are not just an arms reach away. A nun's job is obvious, with or without the habit and though Sister Helen did not wear hers, did not make her less of a servant.

Patrick (Pat) Sonnier, the first death row inmate to get electrocuted under Sister Helen's advisory, is stepping up to question the inside of the death sentencing procedures. The family of the deceased is expected to be bitter and resentful. "Pat had presented himself in a different way to his friend. In each one of his letters he expresses gratitude and appreciation for my care… he makes no demands… he only says how glad he is to have someone to talk with."

Due to the nature of the crime that he is convicted for, Sonniers demeanor towards the events that night should be one of temperance and cool nature. Pat is on death row, as well as his brother, for murdering a teenage couple. Though never offering apologies to the victim's families, Pat showed remorse before his execution, " No words can bring those two kids back. I've been it in my mind a million times. If I could turn back the clock…"(Prejean 4).

Through the days leading to Pat's execution, she tried all she could for appeals and in the midst of her efforts presented facts about the reason why Pat is being sentenced to death. " The crucial race factor is that his victims were white. If Pat and Eddie had killed two black kids, chances are they would never have been sentenced to death"(Prejean48). The truth of the sentence policy adds harshness to the views and ideas of fairness among races. Other cases that harm black people. " Prosecutors, judges, and juries, most of them are white, are far more outraged when white people are murdered than when black people are"(Prejean 48).

This all showed me that the families of whites murdered at hands of dangerous people find no wrongs in countries unjust judicial service. The Bourques' and the LeBlancs' merely long for an apology and justice through death.

Focus Essay

Transcendentalism

As American literature moved past its early beginnings, new literary styles began to develop, most significantly in the form of two contrasting philosophies. While Transcendentalists embraced the idea of mans inherently "good" values believing anything is possible and disagreeing with conformity, Anti-Transcendentalists saw exactly the opposite. They believed man to be a mixture of good and evil and saw life as a quest. Two American authors who express the values of Transcendentalism and Anti-Transcendentalism would be Emerson and Melville, respectively.

Do my essay on Transcendentalism CHEAP !

As a Transcendentalist, Emerson expresses non-conformity in the passage "Self-Reliance." "Whoso would be a man would be a non-conformist"(pg 5) shows the importance of society to man and how people should not be focused on 'foolish consistency' (pg 5) and being misunderstood. People should be original with one another and not focus so much on the conspiracy of society. Emerson says that consistency and conformity doesn't leave a potentially great soul, person, anything to do. As well as conformity, Transcendentalists believe that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. It is also about making your own destiny. For instance, in Emerson's, "Aphorisms" he states "This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it."(pg ) Emerson is clarifying to his audience that as long as you make time for your convictions and act, then no time is better than right now. Procrastination would be alien to him.

In contrast, Melville, as an Anti-Transcendentalist, deals with the concept of man's fight with evil. In the passage from "Moby Dick", Melville builds our perception of this great white whale beginning with Ishmael's introduction "With greedy ears I learned the history of that murderous monster against whom I and all others had taken our oaths of violence and revenge." (pg 1) Ishmael's description of Moby Dick makes him a supernatural evil, "… declaring Moby-Dick not only ubiquitous but immortal…that though groves of spears should be planted in his flanks, he would still swim away unharmed…" Ahab's quest is to kill this evil. Ahab's monomaniacal pursuit of Moby Dick turns into the real evil. Melville highlights the Anti-Transcendentalism philosophy that all human motives have a mixture of good and evil in the depiction of the Pequod characters in that they aren't the best of people with Ahab's insanity driving them to death.

The Transcendentalist and Anti-Transcendentalist aspects on life are very different. Emerson, the Transcendentalist, believes man controls his destiny. Melville, the Anti-Transcendentalist, believes the forces of good and evil heavily influence each man's destiny. Emerson's focus is more positive, in that man's pursuit of his destiny is in his hands and that the evil is conforming to society. Emerson's outlook is about a man following his convictions and making it reality. Melville is as strong about the importance of the will of man as Emerson, but observes more potential for evil in man. Melville is more about the greater forces that impact man. Emerson is more about the potential of man himself.
