In the movie "The Count of Monte Cristo" a character by the name of Edmond Dantes is betrayed by his best friend who frames him for a crime and marries his fianc. Edmond wrongly imprisoned for conspiring with Napoleon, becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. With nothing but revenge on his mind Edmond works up a plan along with another inmate to make a miraculous escape. The escape didn't go by the plan but was successful none the less. Edmond finds treasure on an island which was hidden by the other inmate, after which he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, Claiming himself to be of French nobility Edmond puts his plot of revenge on his friend, who had betrayed him and became his enemy, into action. Edmond Dantes gets close to his enemy who does not recognize him. He then tricks him into losing his fortune and wife. Faced with the chance to finish his enemy off Edmond lets him go and decides to not take revenge because he found out the son of his enemy is actually his own and considers the enemy to be his father. After releasing his betrayer Edmond ends up killing him anyway as self defense when his enemy realizing he has nothing to lose might as well try to kill Edmond.
In the story "The Cask of Amontillado" a character by the name of Montressor is insulted some how by his friend Fortunato. Montressor remains close to Fortunato under the false pretense of friendship knowing that he was going to take his revenge on him for the insult, which had not been forgotten. Montressor pretended to have outward friendliness toward his enemy and shrugs off many insults from the drunken Fortunato, he then invites Fortunato to his home to sample a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, Fortunato being a wine Connoisseur accepts Montressors offer. Once at Montressor's house they go down to the vault to get the cask of Amontillado Montressor, while giving Fortunato more to drink, then chains the drunken Fortunato to the wall and begins to wall up the vault, allowing Fortunato to slowly gain his senses and realize the stupidity of his actions. Fortunato begins to shriek uncontrollably. Momentarily frightened, Montressor thinks to kill his enemy immediately, but, satisfied with his crime and the amount of torture it will have on Fortunato, Montressor decides simply to scream back at his enemy, and take away any of Fortunatos hope of escape with his own howls.
In both the story and the movie the characters who had been wronged take revenge on the person who wronged them.
