In the movie "The Count of Monte Cristo" a character by the name of Edmond Dantes is betrayed by his best friend who frames him for a crime and marries his fianc. Edmond wrongly imprisoned for conspiring with Napoleon, becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. With nothing but revenge on his mind Edmond works up a plan along with another inmate to make a miraculous escape. The escape didn't go by the plan but was successful none the less. Edmond finds treasure on an island which was hidden by the other inmate, after which he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, Claiming himself to be of French nobility Edmond puts his plot of revenge on his friend, who had betrayed him and became his enemy, into action. Edmond Dantes gets close to his enemy who does not recognize him. He then tricks him into losing his fortune and wife. After releasing his betrayer Edmond ends up killing him anyway as self defense when his enemy realizing he has nothing to lose might as well try to kill Edmond.

In the story "The Cask of Amontillado" a character by the name of Montressor is insulted some how by his friend Fortunato. Montressor remains close to Fortunato under the false pretense of friendship knowing that he was going to take his revenge on him for the insult, which had not been forgotten. Montressor pretended to have outward friendliness toward his enemy and shrugs off many insults from the drunken Fortunato, he then invites Fortunato to his home to sample a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, Fortunato being a wine Connoisseur accepts Montressors offer. Once at Montressor's house they go down to the vault to get the cask of Amontillado Montressor, while giving Fortunato more to drink, then chains the drunken Fortunato to the wall and begins to wall up the vault, allowing Fortunato to slowly gain his senses and realize the stupidity of his actions. Fortunato begins to shriek uncontrollably. Momentarily frightened, Montressor thinks to kill his enemy immediately, but, satisfied with his crime and the amount of torture it will have on Fortunato, Montressor decides simply to scream back at his enemy, and take away any of Fortunatos hope of escape with his own howls.

In both the story and the movie the characters who had been wronged take revenge on the person who wronged them. Through careful planning and infiltrating into the lives of their betrayers Montressor and Edmond Dantes get close to their enemy. After gaining the trust of Fortunato, Montressor takes his revenge in one swift blow by sealing him alive in the catacombs underneath his house. While Edmond Dantes make his revenge slow and painful to his betrayer by making him lose everything he holds dear little by little.

After reading a good book the reader's view of life's and life's complications and obligations should be clearer, at least for a time. How was your reading clarified your understand of people, institution, life and its confusion?

I believe that after reading " Dead Man Walking" I have a much clearer view of life, its complications and its obligations. It also gave me a better understanding of people and institutions. I have realized that some people are willing to help others during hard times. It showed that people actually believe in the statement " Its better to give than receive".

This book offered useful information into the system of death penalties and the people behind it. Throughout the novel, Sister Prejean recounts her experience as a spiritual adviser to three men and shows the reader the process of it. As a new reader the book offers great insight and influence to the mind. It arouses to me new information of life behind bars and the procedures that placed them there.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Dead Man Walking

Appointed spiritual advisor, Sister Helen Prejean was offered the chance to become a pen pal to one of the death row in mates. Unlike the others, Prejean had no hesitation to the offer, " I say, sure. The invitation seems to fit with my work in St. Thomas…"(Prejean ). This was very unusual, the services of a nun are known to extend not only to the reachable people, but also to those who are not just an arms reach away. A nun's job is obvious, with or without the habit and though Sister Helen did not wear hers, did not make her less of a servant.

Patrick (Pat) Sonnier, the first death row inmate to get electrocuted under Sister Helen's advisory, is stepping up to question the inside of the death sentencing procedures. The family of the deceased is expected to be bitter and resentful. "Pat had presented himself in a different way to his friend. In each one of his letters he expresses gratitude and appreciation for my care… he makes no demands… he only says how glad he is to have someone to talk with."

Due to the nature of the crime that he is convicted for, Sonniers demeanor towards the events that night should be one of temperance and cool nature. Pat is on death row, as well as his brother, for murdering a teenage couple. Though never offering apologies to the victim's families, Pat showed remorse before his execution, " No words can bring those two kids back. I've been it in my mind a million times. If I could turn back the clock…"(Prejean 4).

Through the days leading to Pat's execution, she tried all she could for appeals and in the midst of her efforts presented facts about the reason why Pat is being sentenced to death. " The crucial race factor is that his victims were white. If Pat and Eddie had killed two black kids, chances are they would never have been sentenced to death"(Prejean48). The truth of the sentence policy adds harshness to the views and ideas of fairness among races. Other cases that harm black people. " Prosecutors, judges, and juries, most of them are white, are far more outraged when white people are murdered than when black people are"(Prejean 48).

This all showed me that the families of whites murdered at hands of dangerous people find no wrongs in countries unjust judicial service. The Bourques' and the LeBlancs' merely long for an apology and justice through death.

Focus Essay

Transcendentalism

As American literature moved past its early beginnings, new literary styles began to develop, most significantly in the form of two contrasting philosophies. While Transcendentalists embraced the idea of mans inherently "good" values believing anything is possible and disagreeing with conformity, Anti-Transcendentalists saw exactly the opposite. They believed man to be a mixture of good and evil and saw life as a quest. Two American authors who express the values of Transcendentalism and Anti-Transcendentalism would be Emerson and Melville, respectively.

Do my essay on Transcendentalism CHEAP !

As a Transcendentalist, Emerson expresses non-conformity in the passage "Self-Reliance." "Whoso would be a man would be a non-conformist"(pg 5) shows the importance of society to man and how people should not be focused on 'foolish consistency' (pg 5) and being misunderstood. People should be original with one another and not focus so much on the conspiracy of society. Emerson says that consistency and conformity doesn't leave a potentially great soul, person, anything to do. As well as conformity, Transcendentalists believe that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. It is also about making your own destiny. For instance, in Emerson's, "Aphorisms" he states "This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it."(pg ) Emerson is clarifying to his audience that as long as you make time for your convictions and act, then no time is better than right now. Procrastination would be alien to him.

In contrast, Melville, as an Anti-Transcendentalist, deals with the concept of man's fight with evil. In the passage from "Moby Dick", Melville builds our perception of this great white whale beginning with Ishmael's introduction "With greedy ears I learned the history of that murderous monster against whom I and all others had taken our oaths of violence and revenge." (pg 1) Ishmael's description of Moby Dick makes him a supernatural evil, "… declaring Moby-Dick not only ubiquitous but immortal…that though groves of spears should be planted in his flanks, he would still swim away unharmed…" Ahab's quest is to kill this evil. Ahab's monomaniacal pursuit of Moby Dick turns into the real evil. Melville highlights the Anti-Transcendentalism philosophy that all human motives have a mixture of good and evil in the depiction of the Pequod characters in that they aren't the best of people with Ahab's insanity driving them to death.

The Transcendentalist and Anti-Transcendentalist aspects on life are very different. Emerson, the Transcendentalist, believes man controls his destiny. Melville, the Anti-Transcendentalist, believes the forces of good and evil heavily influence each man's destiny. Emerson's focus is more positive, in that man's pursuit of his destiny is in his hands and that the evil is conforming to society. Emerson's outlook is about a man following his convictions and making it reality. Melville is as strong about the importance of the will of man as Emerson, but observes more potential for evil in man. Melville is more about the greater forces that impact man. Emerson is more about the potential of man himself.

Among the first epistle to be written were the letters of Paul to the New Testament churches. Women established themselves in the genre as men realized that the form was more suitable to the female writers style. However, due to the modest qualities of the women, little was ever published (Goldsmith vii). In the eighteenth-century, epistolary peaked in Europe. Among the popular epistolary novels of this time were Lacloss Les Liaisons Dangereueses(178), Richardsons Pamela(1740) and Clarissa(1747), and Rousseaus La Nouvelle Heloise(1761)(Norwich 148). Later in the same century, Forcey says the epistolary novel could not survive as a dominant form because, in the fast changing polygot world of . . . Anglo-America, it fell victim to the same forces of seduction and betrayal that its heroines were unable to avoid(5). In the 170s, fictional letters reentered the literary arena. Creative writers spawned this interest with Michel Butors Illustrations III(17) and Bod Randalls The Fan(177)(Altman ).

Epistolary Novels

An epistolary novel is one that is written in the form of a series of letters exchanged among the characters of the story with extract? from their journals sometimes included(Norwich 148). This genre exhibits the quality in which there are two separate audiences to the letter a character of the novel and the reader. The reader is required to become his own narrator since the plot is not being directly told by the author. The author can be compare to an editor since he has control of the epistolary composition. However, he must trust that the reader will understand the meaning and the purpose behind each correspondence(Forcey ).

Epistles from the New Testament

Buy The History of Epistolary term paper

When speaking of epistles, people frequently think of Paul, the apostle of Christ and writer of many of the books in the New Testament. His God-inspired letters were written to and concerning the churches and pastors(called the Pastoral Letters) of that time period. However, the meanings of the letters written in the first-century A.D are still alive in todays Christian church. The foundation, the primary establisher of meaning in the epistles, is the life Jesus recorded in the four gospels. Paul also used the ideas of logos and ethos in the letters. Since the Holy Bible is God-inspired there is absolutely nothing that is illogical within its covers. An example of syllogism can be seen in Romans 5-4.

And we rejoice in the hope of the Glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

The authors credibilty, ethos, must be established for a successful epistle. In his Corinthians, Paul must establish his ethos since the church does not believe his claims as one of the Twelve Apostles. He writes of his pain and suffering for cause of the Cross

[I have] been exposed to death time and time again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea.( Cor 11-5)

Paul continues writing of his suffering of spreading the gospel for the remainder of the epistle. Certainly a man who has suffered this persecution and has no doubts has seen the power of God.

"Get off of me!!!" I cried in a desperate muffle as my older sister unrelentingly sat on top of me holding my nose and mouth closed to hide my desperate cries to my mom for help. This is just one of the many incidents I clearly remember from growing up with my sister Jackie. Only four years older than me, I looked up to her as some sort of idol- I loved all the things she loved and tried to imitate everything she did and believed. I would do anything for her and she definitely used this to her advantage. For example, she always made me lay in the sun with her by the pool until she got a good tan, made me come with her to drug stores, supermarkets, tanning salons, restaurants, and even got me to skip three days of middle school so she wouldn't have to endure high school troubles. Jackie was my best friend- and I never thought that would change until the day she met Enrique.

"Are you praying?" my sister inquisitively demanded in a meticulously forceful whisper while slightly nudging her right elbow into my forearm. "Yes!" I instinctively snapped back feeling extremely irritated and annoyed by her unfailing consistency to ask this same monotonous question every single Sunday while the priest sacredly broke the bread of life. I vividly recollect (quite humorously now) squeezing my eyelids shut tight over my big brown eyes almost hoping to see God in the black desolate oblivion of my chubby thirteen year old being while making what seemed like a desperate plea for help- "Dear God, please send my sister the perfect guy- the guy that she deserves, Amen." Every Sunday of my sister's last year at Klein Oak High school Jackie would always remind me to pray for her to find "Mr. Right" also informing my adolescent mind that a prayer to God is always the strongest when the priest breaks Jesus' body and blood. This simplistic prayer religiously continued until my sister left for Saint Louis University in the fall. Twelve-thirty mass with my parents now became seemingly far less interesting along with my simplistic prayer becoming far less consistent. With the power of prayer or fate- maybe a little bit both Jackie met her "perfect guy" the first year at college and recently got married in beautiful Madrid, Spain. Now that my sister has found true love and happiness our relationship has changed since she is found another best friend.

"Is he cute?" I bantered in a high pitch lull pulling the phone closer to my ear. "Well, he is sort of dorky…" Jackie hesitantly laughed further explaining that the knee high socks and the thick glasses are what drew her into him. Enrique grew up in Madrid, Spain and had never experienced that much of America. Well after a few dates they soon became a couple and after three years decided to get married. My sister getting married changed our relationship entirely.

Morally Irresponsible

The passage that I have chosen from The Great Gatsby is, to me, the most realistic and pragmatic statement made throughout the entire novel. It is found toward the end of the novel, which implies that the narrator, Nick, a formally unbiased person, has grown to understand the aristocratic society. By referring to Tom and Daisy as a prime example, Nick conveys the hollowness of the upper-class society after conversing with Tom, after the death of Gatsby, Myrtle and George.

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreat back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made….(186-7)

After reading this quote, I was taken by the injustice of the situations. Despite that Daisy is the true killer of Myrtle, she lies through omission, with a free conscience, and allows for Gatsby to take the blame for her mistake and endure the consequences (in his case, death). Only a truly selfish and careless person with no heart or consideration for others is capable of a deed such as this. Rather than attending Gatsby's funeral, Tom and Daisy simply allow themselves to remove from the calamity, not only physically, but psychologically, as well. Actions of which reveal the emptiness of the two characters. The two arrogant and inconsiderate snobs just pick up their lives, no problem, to start all over again, just because they can by allowing money to ease their minds. I think that the loyal and compassionate (Gatsby) should have been the ones to live and the egotistical and the using should have been the ones to die. Their lives are like endless opportunities and they need not put any effort forth to have this. It is amazing to me that two people can live life with no morals or values at the expense of others.

Custom writing service can write essays on Great Gatsby

Tom and Daisy, typical upper-class citizens, have betrayed the American dream of working hard to enjoy life. They have disregarded the work hard aspect, and in return, they lack truth and love. At the start of her life, Daisy is in love with Gatsby and promises to wait for his return from the war, however, he true aspirations and selfishness are revealed when a solid social position comes along, Daisy jumps on the opportunity to please her parents and advance in society. Gatsby, on the other hand, has managed to try hard to achieve his success, but looses sight when he realizes his goals are shallow and empty. He dies, along with George and Myrtle Wilson, while still a step below their goals and dreams. This is an example of how false goals have changed the world so that only the morally irresponsible can survive. Although Daisy and Tom's lives have no meaning, they prevail over the valuable members of society.

People like Daisy and Tom fail to realize the reality of the statement "what goes around comes around" and although the two of them seem to be able to disregard others in concern for only themselves, they will understand that their kind of behavior will be returned, maybe not directly to them, but in some other way (perhaps via their daughter). This passage makes me want to preach to everyone to treat people the way you want to be treated. It sounds simple but it pretty much applies to everything.
