Internet Relationships

The Internet is changing the way people communicate with one another, helping people to become more confident. With the new confidence it is easier for the "shy to be outgoing, and 'nerdy' sophisticated"(Turkle 7). Through the Internet came the creation of windows, allowing people to play with different personalities at the same time, permits the person to create as many identities as they feel needed.

Due to the Internet, many people have created a new confidence in themselves knowing they can act in any sort of way and not see the reaction of others. This new confidence has helped people to become comfortable enough with themselves for online dating. Online dating helps alleviate the fears of rejection in some, allowing those people to share more about themselves and create more in depth relationships. Although it may alleviate the fears for some, others feel the need to embellish themselves a little bit to appear more attractive or intelligent to others online. While it seems that being online is bad, it is good for people like Meghan Daum, author of Virtual Love, who have fears of talking to people face to face or even on the telephone. Being online, is able to "provide a useful antidote for communication anxieties"(Daum 55). Unfortunately in some cases, it is taken to far. In the case of Daum, the Internet and her new confidence from online dating became everything, "there was no outdoors, no social life, no weather… only the computer screen" (57). Luckily enough Daum was able to realize that she " had invested so heavily in a made-up character" (57) and got out of the relationship. While the Internet helped Meghan to gain confidence as a person, it failed to fix her problem and did not relieve her anxieties for facing people face to face.

Through the Internet, many people have gained confidence, whether it was through their natural selves or the character they made up. With the invention of windows, communication with one another has been affected. "Windows suggests a distributed self that exists in many worlds and play many roles at the same time" (Turkle 7). People are now using windows to play with different parts of themselves to fit their different moods. "I'm different in different chats they bring out different things in me"(7). Windows plays people personalities and their identity roles creating personalities disorders.

Through the Internet, many people have changed themselves. Some gian confidence and are able to date online, while most end up creating alternate personalities. However, online dating did not help to alleviate the fears of those that are afraid of face to face contact with others. Online dating helped people to act anyway they wanted that reflected their mood not having to see the affect of this first hand. Windows helped through this because people were able to act out the personalities they felt needed for that time period.

The Massacre at Tiananmen Square

It was a bloody massacre. The Massacre of Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, China, that is. It was boycott against the government. The people wanted freedom. They wanted democracy. They wanted to know why Hu Yaobang was dismissed in January 187 (NMIS.org Chronology Page 1). They were angry that students who wanted to know why he was dismissed were arrested (Inside China Today, Part One). All these facts were reasons for the Massacre of Tiananmen Square, in which, according to Chinas Red Cross, two thousand six hundred people were killed, and 7,000 were wounded (Inside China Today, Part Five). The question is did the government have the right to use force to stop the protest? The answer is yes because the people were warned, and were trying to change something that would be very hard to change.

Tiananmen Square was a place of protest in April, May, and June of 18 (NMIS.org). Students from Beijing University, as well as many other schools, were boycotting against the government. They would protest at Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is one of the largest public squares in the world, which has an area of over one hundred acres (Encyclopedia Britannica). In this large area, massive amounts of brutalities took place. Large tanks crushed eleven students, and many other students were shot and killed.

The people were warned to stay away from Tiananmen Square. Specifically, on June rd, at 1000 P.M., the loudspeakers at Tiananmen Square cautioned the students to stay at home (Inside China Today, Part Five). Also, if that didnt warn the people enough, the fact that so many people were dying should have told them that it just wasnt worth it.

Buy the massacre at tiananmen square term paper

One of the main reasons for all of the protests is because of communism. The students did not want communism, but would rather have a democracy. This is not the way to fix communism. It would have been easier to gather up all of these students and take them to the leader to see if he can change his ways. When the people go on protest, they get their point across. Especially if there are that many. They dont have to take it so far that the government has to use force to stop them. Either way, they got their point across, but they would have got their point across in a non-violent way.

The government had only one choice to stop the protest at Tiananmen Square by force. They tried to negotiate, but that didnt work. They enforced martial law, but that was a joke to the people (Inside China Today, Part Three). The people were warned. They shouldnt have kept protesting. Also, they were trying to change something that would be very hard to change. For sure there were other people who favored communism who would have went on strike if it changed to a democracy, which would pretty much be impossible anyway

Summer Book Report

Incident at Hawk's Hill

1. The book I did my report on is called Incident at Hawk's Hill by Allan W. Eckert. It was published by Little, Brown & Company in 171.

. The main characters in this book were Benjamin MacDonald, Esther and William MacDonald, John MacDonald, a female badger, and George Burton. Benjamin MacDonald is a six-year-old child that can communicate with animals. Esther and William MacDonald are Ben's parents. John MacDonald is Ben's brother. George Burton is a neighbor of the MacDonald's. He is a trapper.

Custom Essays on Incident at Hawks Hill

. The book was a non-fictional story with slight fiction added in.

4. The story is about a six-year-old named Benjamin MacDonald. Ben had an odd relationship with his family, but mostly with his father in the sense that he did not talk or communicate in any way with his him. He was a very shy boy who loved animals, he could communicate with them and he could get close to them. The animals somehow knew that he was no threat to them.

One day Ben was watching a bird hunt his prey (a mouse). Ben was just exploring and looking at the bones when he heard a loud squeaky voice. He looked over and saw a badger. Then Ben found a nest of four baby mice and started feeding them to the badger one by one. Ben touched the badger and the she ran away.

When Ben got home he was happy. At dinner his Father was curious, so he asked if he had a good time and Ben nodded his head yes. Bens mother asked what happened and he said he saw a badger. Bens parents did not look happy. They asked George Burton (a neighbor) to catch the badger so that it would not hurt Ben.

The female badger was hunting one night when she got caught in one of George Burton's traps. She escaped, but in the process she had to bite off one of her toes. When she got back to the den all her pups were dead except for one which died shortly after.

One day Ben was wandering around like usual and forgot which direction he came from. He spent multiple moments thinking. Then he realized he was lost, all alone, and away from civilization with no food or water. He started walking in which direction he believed was toward his house. It started raining so he looked for shelter. He noticed that there was an animal-made tunnel and he climbed into it.

He awoke the next morning with a badger by his feet. Ben noticed it was the same badger that he gave the mice. The badger gave Ben some chicken that it killed. The badger helped Ben survive for two weeks until his brother John found him.

5. What I enjoyed about this book is the garrulous details of the setting and the characters. What I did not like about this book is that is was boring and had no action.

6. If I were to change this story, I would make it so that nobody ever found Ben and he and the badger lived together for the rest of their lives.

"You do as you experienced."

Employing artistic and literary devices towards the equivalent goal to reproduce forms of imagination to which the mind will recur with pleasure, a binding link between art and literature is established. A proof to this link is that both art and literature reflect the social context in which they were produced.

The social context in which an artist lives in heavily influences his or her painting. During the Renaissance, an age that spanned the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, Western art reached its pinnacle, and although Michelangelos work embodies its grandest artistic achievements, no life embodies the Renaissance as grandly and completely than that of Leonardo da Vincis. He more than any other individual then earned the title Universal man. It was not un-rare for Renaissance artists to engage themselves in various intellectual interests; Leonardo, however, was unparalleled in both the breadths of his interests and the thoroughness with which he studied them. Renaissance works of art existed largely for their own sake, as objects of ideal beauty and pertaining to the human soul, mind and body. Leonardo clearly displayed this belief in his many extant drawings, which reveal his brilliant draftsmanship and his mastery of the anatomy of humans, animals, and plant life. In addition, Marc Chagall was profoundly affected by his home, background, and religion. In one of his notorious painting, I and the Village, Chagall's childhood Russian Jewish community is evidently manifested. Clearly, because his Jewish background effected him greatly Chagall chose to create a replica of his very own Jewish village. Both in Leonardo and Chagall's paintings the time- period they experienced is reflected in their paintings, whether through the theme, background, or their artistic devices.

Furthermore, in literature the social context effects an authors method of writing just the same. The life of Edgar Allan Poe was, like so many of his tales, short, poignant, and strangely haunted. From a very young age he experienced many deaths and consequently began to drink alcohol. Due to this fact, Poe's writings became very daunting, with a common theme of death. For example, in his short story "The Cask of Amontillado" not only is the whole plot surrounded with alcohol (a cask of amontillado) his theme of revenge and death is equally portrayed. Additionally, Mark Twain lived during the Reconstruction, the period directly after the civil war which failed because although federalists tried to change the mind-set of many to prejudice the outlook on racism never did change. In Twain's book Huck Finn, Jim a black slave constantly works to free himself but all the while he is truly free through the will of his owner. Mark twain shows this irony of trying to free an already free man similar to the irony taking place during the Reconstruction. The federalists tried to show that all blacks are equal when really any human should have equal rights.

If hell does exist, why wouldn't ceaseless torture be fitting for such an evil environment? Heaven is an idea of endless paradise for those who have lived a morally good life and who have helped others. Those of us who have earned the torture by being morally corrupted do not deserve to enjoy the pleasantries of heaven that needed to be earned in this world by being virtuous.

One dilemma with hell is the idea of judgement. How are we being judged, what kinds of things are considered to be good enough for heaven and bad enough for hell? We all have different views on this subject depending on how we were brought up. Those of us who have a religious background feel that practicing and believing determine our fate. It is a little more complicated for those who do not believe in any particular religion. There are those who just believe they will go to hell and just don't care, there are also those who live what they believe is a morally good life and feel they will go to heaven, and also those who just don't believe in heaven or hell altogether. We all apply our different views to make opinions on current issues at hand. For example, many people believe that we do not have the right to punish murderers extensively by the death penalty or with torture because they believe that it is God's job to judge them when they arrive at the gates of heaven.

The idea that we should treat prisoners more humanely but that these same prisoners will be tortured endlessly in hell says a lot about the human mind. Since these prisoners will be punished in hell, we don't have to obtain a guilty conscience by torturing them ourselves. It is also a way of making sure that we don't go to hell for punishing them. Even though it seems like the idea of treating prisoners humanely was created for the well being of the prisoners, it seems as though it is more of a self-righteous, self-serving act. I am not a heavy believer in the idea of hell. Admittedly at times, I wish hell existed to get my revenge on those who have caused me grief. But I think that we receive our rewards and punishments in different forms during our present life. Even though many people think they could be in much better situations, I think it could be a lot worse. So it's just a matter of perception, whether you see the glass half empty or half full.

I think that this rejection of hell is an indication of moral progress because it shows the ability to act in a moral and just way without such a consequence as being tortured in the fire pits of hell. We shouldn't need an excuse to be virtuous. But for those who can't help but be immoral the idea of hell is there to give them something to ponder. Because no one really knows whether hell really exists or has just been used as a scare tactic. But whatever the truth, it is an effective idea for those with a conscience.
