William Faulkner(187-16) was born in Mississippi, near Oxford, were his family moved when he was five. His great-grandfather had been somewhat of a local legend after becoming a colonel in the Civil War. His heritage is a great influence in his literary works.

William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" shows Fualkner's concern for the destruction of the South, as represented within the destruction of the whole town, including Ms. Emily. Ms. Emily had been "a tradition, a duty, and a care," when she was alive. From the beginning of the story the reader finds out she has just died and she is a "fallen monument." A person to be revered. As the plot develops thru the narrator, whom many consider to be the town, we learn that Ms. Emily had not been allowed to have any male friends because her father was over protective of his daughter. When is young she is thin and wearing virginal white, while standing behind her father's menacing presence. After her father dies she denies he is dead and refuses to turn over the body for three days. Afterwards, she begins dating a Yankee, Homer Barron, and the town can feel sorry for her. She can not date a Yankee she is of Southern heritage. Homer disappears and the town feels as if Emily will remain single until she dies. She dies and the town discovers Homer Barron in the upstairs bedroom. He had be dead for over forty years. Beside his body a long strand of iron gray hair is found. Ms. Emily had kept her love after all.

Faulkner uses images of realism, the gothic and reflection to convey his story thru the narrator. "She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that palid hue. Her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face, looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough..." (170) LaDonna said this was extreme realism but Dr. White said it went beyond that almost to the grotesque.

Ms. Emily was framed in the window more than once during the story. "When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows-sort of tragic and serene."(17) LaDonna said this was a hint of the sublime.

After the realization that Ms. Emily had poisoned Homer so she could have in death what she never was able to have in life because of her fathers overbearing personality, we began the discussion.

Question Can "A Rose for Miss Emily be viewed as a Romantic work?

Comments David said that Faulkner had taken a Poe type stance and used the gothic to represent decay literally and figuratively in the Old South.

Kellye said that the story showed the people of the Old South not wanting the let go of the past and Jennifer added that was why the town tolerated the caprices of Ms. Emily.

We discussed light and dark imagery and the "desire and loss" element embedded in the fabric of the story.

Because the narrator chooses to skip around regarding the memories of Ms. Emily and does not go in a chronological order, the class had a discussion on the fact that Ms. Emily had actually been lying beside Homer in her twilight years. We concluded this was probably the case.

Lynda asked if anything is ever said about the statement that Homer likes to go drinking with young men, and other teachers agreed that is an issue that arises every time we are teaching the story to a group of high school children..

What is the significance of the title? We did not come to a conclusion about that issue. Some scholars have mentioned the imagery in the upstairs bedroom is full of rosy colors, suggesting that Emily has her rose in Homer's death. Other students thought the title suggests a tribute to Ms. Emily by the town which is so resistant in letting go of the past.

Finally, Al pointed out the correspondence between the house and Emily, comparing it to "The Minister's Black Veil," where everyone wants to know what is behind the veil, just as everyone wants to know what is in Emily's house. Al also discussed the image of Emily silhouetted as an "idol," which seemed to signal something primitive and pagan, contrasted to the image of Emily as an angel.

Alcoholism And Teens

Alcoholism refers to the drinking of alcoholic beverages to such a degree that important things of an individuals life - such as work, school, family relationships, or personal safety and health; are seriously and repeatedly interfered with. Alcoholism is considered a disease, meaning that it follows a characteristic course with known physical, and social symptoms. The alcoholic continues to consume alcohol even though the destructive consequences he/she may face. Alcoholism is serious, and a very difficult habbit to break. If not treated, it may be a habit that cannot be broken, or maybe even a fatal problem.

It is generally thought that once the disease has developed, the alcoholic will not drink normally again. It is important to note that the particular symptoms and pattern of drinking problems may vary with the individual. Alcoholism is, therefore, a very complex disorder, and this complexity has led some researchers to question the accuracy of the disease of alcoholism. There are generally four basic types of alcoholism. The first type is called Alpha Alcoholism. It is being purely psychological dependent on alcohol (Haskins, 84). With Alpha

Alcoholism the person depends on alcohol to relieve bodily and emotional pain.

This stage and all stages are serious in teens drinking, because any alcohol intake is dangerous for teens still developing mentally and physically. Another term for this alcoholic behavior is often called problem drinking.

The second type of the alcoholic behaviors is called Beta Alcoholism. It does not involve either psycological or physical dependence on alcohol. But yet worse on your body than Alpha Alcoholism because the heavy drinking may lead to ulcers, cirrhosis of the liver, damage to the nerves, and kidney problems(Haskins, 85). Beta alcoholics have a shortened life expectancy and suffer from financial and emotional demands due to excessive over drinking. Just like smoking, it costs money like everything else, the demand for alcohol will get to the circumstance of pinching every penny to just get one more drink. The third drinking behavior is Gamma Alcoholism, the alcoholic becomes physically dependent on liquor. So this means that the bodies tissues, become tolerent to the new substance and the tissue becomes immuned to it, and the the bodie tissue needs the constent pressence of alcohol. Gamma alcoholics crave the need for alcohol but yet can only live without alcohol for a short peroid of time. If the

Gamma alcoholic does not get there alcohol there body reacts very violently.

Gamma alcoholics is one of the most common types of alcoholism in the United

States. The fourth type of alcoholism is Delta Alcoholism. In Delta alcoholism the drinker cannot stay away from liquor for even a day or twowithout suffering from withdrawl syptoms. Usually this type of alcoholism is found where alcohol is drank customarily. Addiction to acohol is very much like addiction to heroin.

Alcoholism is a very tough habit to break, many people that have been classified as a alcoholic can never have a normal life again. Teenagers that are alcoholics are much more easily disturbed than adult alcoholics. In the near past the

United States has been expeirenceing a widespread use of alcohols by teenagers (Haskins, 40) Today there aree some 500,00 alcoholics between the ages of ten and nineteen, and it is estimated that one of every fifteen young people today will eventually become an alcholic(Haskins, 4). Teens drink for curiosity and to act like adults, not only that but peer presure and just to look cool in front of friends. Parents are a stong influence to teenagers to not drink or limit the use of alcohol by young people, as statistics show. If none of the parents in the United States drank, then neither would most of there children(Haskins, 105). Teenage drinking is getting to the point where the age group is getting younger and younger, it is now not uncommon to find teenagers with alcohol problems in nine-, ten-, and twelve year olds(Haskins, 1).

Teens and their unnecessary back problems

What is it about homework that makes it seem so daunting? Could it be that today's kids just can't seem to keep up with it? Perhaps busy scheduales prevent student from completing the assignments? Or could it be the fact that teachers feel the need to assign excess amounts of homework. The way teachers pile on homework you would think, teachers work on commission. People weren't kidding when they said, too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing.

Let's analyze for just a moment, the original intent of homework. Homework is a great tool for learning, and teaching for that matter. It gives students an opportunity to practice and perfect the skills necessary to succeed in school. Teachers today seemed to have lost this noble intent. Busy work seems to be the choice of our educators. The intent of busy work is quite clear, to have the kids sit down and shut up. When closely examined, all busy work does is frustrate students to the point of relinquishment. This coupled with the fact that students have a hard enough time staying focused we should not be waste away what valuable time we do have. Why then are we monopolizing the time of teenagers with redundant busy work?

Cheap University Papers on Teens and their unnecessary back problems

Six classes a day makes for a very demanding homework schedule. Most students having two of those classes in math and science. If the average homework load per class is twenty minutes a night, then that adds up to two hours of homework a night. That is a lot of work to keep up with, especially considering some students work and are involved in sports or other school activities. It is just not reasonable to assume that a normal active teen would be able to keep up with their activities and academic responsibilities. We can only ask so much of our youth.

Sometimes being a teacher requires a little bit of psychology. In many cases kids will do just to spite authority figures. So by giving them even more homework, they would be even more apt to not do any of it. The key here is to find a balance. Giving the kids enough homework so that they learn the material but don't get burned out. It is a fine line that teachers must tread.

Homework is by no means useless or harmful. Its advantages are numerous and remarkable. The problem is with teachers feeling that quantity outranks quality. A teacher of my once put it to me in a way that made a whole lot of sense. He said that you shouldn't have to walk a mile to prove that you can walk ten feet. That is certainly something we need to keep in mind. I say save your backs and unload a few books from the Jansport. I do not feel that homework should be eliminated, I only feel that it looses it's meaning when used too excessively

It has long been known by scientists that sound waves that cause our eardrums to vibrate, thus producing a physical effect that our minds can interpret as sound, have similar effect on others substances. Most notable is the ability of certain opera singers to find a pitch so acute, so exact that when produced with sufficient volume it can shatter crystal. Many have experience the sympathetic thump in one's chest in response to a particularly loud firecracker or the rattling of windows in response to thunder. It perhaps will come as no surprise, then, that scientists have looked into the possibility of using harnessing this effect for industrial purposes.

One such attempt was in mining. In the mid-160's research was done into developing a machine that would use sound resonance to reduce different composites of earth to rubble without the need for digging or blasting. Some of the challenges encountered were inventing an amplifier capable of emitting enough volume to be of any use, manufacturing a speaker big and sturdy enough to emit such a sound without itself disintegrating, and targeting the sound such that only the area needed would be shattered and not all of the surrounding terrain with it.

Constructing the amplifier and speaker was done with much experimentation but relative ease. And the exact frequency of sound required for differing composites of stone was easily found through trial and error. But finding a way to target the sound presented a problem that seemed insurmountable. They tried sound funnels, sound dampening such as white noise, and even placing smaller speakers close to the stone at strategic points. None of these were very spectacularly successful.

Eventually the effort was abandoned for three reasons. First, environmentalists had long been after the government to pass laws against strip mining using high-powered jets of water to completely tear down great portions of land just to find the minerals within and the effect of this sound technology promised to be very similar to that technique. Second, attempts to focus the sound were proving to be increasingly less likely. And thirdly, the mining industry underwent a sudden and steep recession much like the high tech industry has just recently.

Cheap Custom Essays on Resonance Mining

Years later a geologist, Dr. Jerome Fundt, was amusing himself by exploring the reports and papers written on the results of the sound experiments that had been done, and something in them struck him with an idea. As mentioned above a portion of the experiments involved trial and error to determine which frequencies of sound affect which different composites of stone and earth.

Using these findings, Dr. Fundt developed a technique of geographic sampling that was just as effective as core-sampling, in which a long 'core' of earth is literally plumbed from a surface, drawn out and the strata studied for composites. Dr. Fundt developed a technique by which sound was sent into the earth of stone and the resulting resonance was measured. Accurate to within mere fractions of fractions of inches, this technique proved effective in accomplishing the exact same sort of results that core sampling did without the difficulty have having to bore through solid stone and sometimes metal deposits.

Moreover, this technique helped mining companies find deposits of different metals without having to dig around at random seeking signs of them. Using Fundt's sound techniques they could locate specific deposite, dig directly to them for extraction and save much more land than had previously been saved before.

Today the technique includes computer imagery and tri-dimensional modeling, so that not only now can miners find deposits, they can determine the exact length, depth and width of those specific deposits and see a picture represented on a monitor in D. Because of these sound techniques, mining is as much a science today as it is labor, more efficient and cost effective and much more environmentally friendly.

Jose's Saramago's writing style was something that at first threw me off. He writes with little punctuation and page long sentences aren't surprising. "Speech runs on in a sprawling mess, How does that work, By separating each statement with a comma and a capital, Oh I see, It takes a while to get used to. I initially thought it was clever; none of the characters are named, either, merely referred to by their position - the first man, the doctors wife, the man with the black eye-patch, and so on - and the combination of the two is intensely claustrophobic. You never quite feel you can see whats going on, you feel that your viewpoint is constrained - in fact, you feel partially blind." I disagree with his statement.

While perplexing to some readers, Saramagos unabashed style gives the feeling of a firsthand account of the events, adding to the realism and tension of the novel. It provides a flowing rhythm similar to an oral dialogue. Not only the dialogue, but also the character's thought process is also written in this style. Since we have to associate the text with the speaker, it allows us to find out more about the characters through our own judgement. We are forced to imagine the situation or else we would be completely lost. The ambiguity demands a little time to get used to, but it does become customary. I do agree the style gets confusing at times, especially when dialogue is exchanged with more than two people. It becomes confusing to follow exactly who's saying what, which can lead to multiple interpretations. This is another criticism with the book, that it is an allegory without a referent. We are left wondering what it all means. The metaphor of blindness, and the difference between "seeing" and "understanding" has previously been explored. Although this seems to be the bottom line, with a character suggesting they had never really been blind, that perhaps the sighted do not really see, the plot and use of this metaphor is eminently worth reading.

"This is his talent, I believe, of taking a formulaic structure of seeming insanity and moulding it into a narrative where it is made human by the weakest of our kind." This statement holds true, as so many critics seem to praise this book. Yet, this story could also be seen as a stalker or potential murderer intruding on another's personal affairs. Though unlikely Senhor Jose will be compelled to harm her, his quest has already seen him unexpectedly breaking the law more than once. "By illuminating the mundane details of where she went to school, the identity and secrets of her godparents, why she was married, he wilfully connects to this woman through the incalculable minutiae that makes up our lives. He also gives himself a purpose and makes himself a little less like Saramago's (anti-hero) predecessors." It is also interesting to note that this event is how Senhor Jose will be recorded in history. By looking for the unknown woman she becomes alive, as mentioned in the line "put it [the record of the unknown woman] in the archive of the living, as if she hadn't died". By this quest, Senhor Jose is given a new meaning to his life. His obsession and motive for finding her, whether being the thrills of an adventure or to suppress his loneliness, has defined who he is for us. Senhor Jose now has a story worth telling; reducing our lives to statistics "is rejected by Senhor Jos when he seeks out the details of the unknown woman's past." His adventure has given him a purpose, and even found a friend in an old lady. "Searching seeking is part and parcel of our existence." The more information he collects, the more of the mystery is unravelled, and greater the sense of accomplishment. Our desperate and lonely character, in an attempt to have a connection with another human being, has at least found his own identity.

narrative

To be given the chance to play little league was one of the greatest times of my life. I played little league for four years, and every year I made the all-star team. My best friend and I played on every regular season team and every all-star team together. The final game of our career was unforgettable.

It had been 4 years of great enjoyment with my best friend, Cody Smith. We always clowned around in practice, but when the game would start we had a high intensity. Cody would pitch, and I would play second base. When he wasn't pitching, I would, and he would play third base. We were the top players in little league, or so we thought.

Our all-star team had made it to the championship of our state tournament. Before our team took the field our coach John Zamouski gave us a talk. He said, "Well men, we've came a long way. Today's the day we've all practiced so hard for, but I want to have fun with it. Lets treat this like every other game we have won. You're all winners, win or lose. I want you all to know that I feel privileged to have coached such a fine bunch of men. So lets go out and play this game as hard as you can. What do you say, lets go have FUN." We all got up and yelled, "YEA." "Let's play hard." "Yea" As we all got more pumped up. "Who are we?" "N.I." As we got more loud and more intense. Coach said, "Bring it in. Win on . One, two, three" as we all yelled together "WIN."

Cheap Custom Essays on fag muffins

As I ran on to that field I recalled all the practicing I had done, and I knew I owed most of it to my father. He started me throwing and hitting when I was about four-years-old. As my passion grew more and more I wanted to go practice all the time. So I would ask my father to practice with me. Even though my father was tired or in the middle of a good TV show he would practice with me. I remembered my father sitting on an old milk crate while I pitched to him. This made me chuckle a little because I would throw a low wild pitch on accident that would hit him in the legs, but he kept positive.

Cody was pitching a hitter and I was playing well too. The score kept going back and forth. There were a lot of errors because the field was all dirt and felt like concrete, the ball was taking bounces I had never seen before. The final inning came around and we were down by 1 run with outs when I came to bat. There was no one on base and the pitcher had strikes on me. The next pitch seemed like it took forever. The pitcher pitched the ball right down the middle of the plate. I waited on the ball and hit a screaming line drive into left-center for a stand up double. Then Cody came up and hit the first pitch for a -run homerun for us to take the lead by 1. The next batter grounded out to end the inning, but the damage had already been done. We took the field and Cody was still pitching. The first batter hit a double and then stole to advance to third base. Cody then struck out the next two batters. Their were two outs and a runner on third base. Before Cody pitched that next ball I knew every player on our team told themselves that they would do whatever it took to get that next out. So when the ball was pitched and hit to me I was determined to get the out. The ground ball took a bad bounce and hit me square in the ribs. I picked up the ball, which was to the left of me. I spun around and threw that ball with all my power to first base. The ball reached the first basemen's mitt a half step before the runner made it to the base for the third out and the championship.

Getting the chance to play with my best friend and winning the state championship was everything I had ever wanted then. Having such a great and inspiring coach made me feel proud to have won the championship for our coach. As for my father, I know he was proud, and I was grateful for all the time and effort he had spent with me. I know I will remember my final game, and all the people that made my little league career so great for the rest of my life.

Reality Is Perception

Human reality is full of physical objects but how humans perceive these objects is completely objective, depending on the person and their senses. Perception of physical objects cannot occur without other objects that allow one to perceive these manifestations in the first place. When a sentient being acknowledges that they exist in a world of physical objects, they also confirm that their sense perception functions to an extent that allows them to reason,

even to a small degree, their physical existence.

What is a physical object? Does a physical object have to be something you can see, touch, feel, taste, or smell or can a physical object exist without one being able to confirm its existence? Is the sensory perception of a fly wrong just because it has over 1000 eyes or is the way humans view the world incorrect because we do not? A blind man can still help a person distinguish a colour because no one perception is ever totally interpreted by only one sensory organ. Many other animals on earth do not just rely on there sight for

Custom Essays on Perception

information about their world. For instance fish in totally dark areas of the ocean have no eyes and yet can still maneuver around in there environment by sensing ripples in their area with special sense organs on their body. Birds also seem to use the magnetic lines of the earth to navigate south for the winter each year. It would be foolish to make the statement that all sensory perception of the world is circumspect and is exactly the same for all creatures.

All animals on the planet earth live in a hermeneutic spiral meaning that we all live in the past. Humans, as with other animals, can only sense a cause after it has made an effect. The assumption is made that if we sense an effect there must therefore be a cause, which leads to a naïve realism of perception. As well, with sensory perception there is a large amount of extraneous information such as emotional and ideological that causes interference as to how we interpret the information received. This misinterpretation can happen from the time an action is made to the time when we seem to perceive the action. This can be seen for instance when at a baseball game the batter bats a home run and only after a second or two you hear the crack of the bat on the ball. This can be explained because the speed of light which allows you to see the batter hitting the ball is much faster than the speed of sound. Of course there is always the chance that our sense organs can deceive us. For instance when the moon is on the horizon is looks a lot bigger than when it is seen high up in the sky. As for humans all perception is relative to the surroundings because for instance at night humans can see objects like trees, stars, etc. better when we look at these things at a an angle with the corner of our eyes. During the day however things are seen better when looking straight at them, this phenomenon has been explained with the use of rods/cones in our eyes. Rods are sensitive to dim light and are important in black/white vision and the detection of motion and are primarily located toward the corners of the eyes hence their value in night vision. Cones are responsible for colour vision and for the perception of bright images.

The average person expresses what he believes is perception; referred to

as naïve realism

1. I live in a world of physical objects.

. I know this through sense perception.

. Physical objects exist independently of my perception.

4. My claims about their reality are usually correct.

5. Sense impressions are caused by the objects.

Sense perception all comes down to being able to exist in a world we know

nothing about and understanding that certain actions will achieve certain goals.

As long as these goals are achievable through what we believe to be reality than

nothing else really matters. Therefore, perception that allows one to exist in

a world of physical objects is all that a person wanting to exist really needs.
