Love-Crazy Gatsby

Owen Klein 11th

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that is written about a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, the few people he effects, and the aura surrounding him and his past. A chosen prose passage for explication, found on page one hundred seventeen in the novel, gives the reader insight into Gatsby's past and foreshadows his future. It portrays a love-struck Gatsby in his youth, and shows the great love he had for a boyhood fling, Daisy. This passion for Daisy turns into an obsession when he loses her to go to war. His love stays with him and leads him to her five years later, only to find her with another man. Still he pursues his greatest love, and encounters that what he has done is built her up to be the perfect woman, put her on a magnanimous pedestal, which guides Jay to disappointment.

Literally, the passage is full the use of poetic terms and phrases such as metaphors and personification. "The quiet lights in the houses were humming into the darkness," creates a very peaceful mental image for the reader. Jay strives to, "gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder," which was a kiss from Daisy. "Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete." There are many uses tone and symbolism that are needed to create the feeling of love inside the reader, for these are the things that comprise a good novel.

Jay Gatsby's past is full of obscurities. The reader sees that James Gatz, later Jay Gatsby, was born of a slightly impoverished agricultural family. He absconded from them because he had a dream that he wanted to be something other than a farmer, someone who was noticed, wanted to make a difference. He left and changed his name to something more catchy, Jay Gatsby. Influenced later by a wealthy man on proper etiquette, Gatsby joins the military where he meets Daisy and falls in love. Time flies, and Jay is soon transferred to the battleground, where he is praised for valor in combat and promoted. Gatsby never relinquishes his feelings for Daisy, and decides to track Daisy after the war. In his proceedings, Gatsby involves himself in some illegal operations, such as bootlegging liquor during prohibition, and eventually becomes quite wealthy. He moves very close to the vicinity where Daisy resides with her family. When Jay finally meets Daisy five years later, he is surprised because she was not the woman he had been dreaming of, for his imagination had distorted what he thought of Daisy. He was somewhat disappointed, yet he bore all to be with her. Nick, Gatsby's friend and narrator of the novel says, "His life had been confused and disordered since then [he left for war], but if he could return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing [love] was…"

All that Jay Gatsby goes through to be close to his love is very valiant, yet without any influence from Daisy, Jay breaks his own heart.

Coming to College

In this day and time, education has become a valuable keepsake. Learning a marketable skill is

more precious than gold. That is why I am glad to be enrolled in school and on the verge of graduating.

Being in college has really inspired me to reach for higher goals. It has also made me more aware of my &

Help with essay on Coming to College

potentials. Most importantly, being in college has taught me to be responsible and involved in my future.

That is why I think coming back to college was a good choice for me.

Coming back to college has forced me to grow up. The first day of class seemed like one of

the longest days of my life. For one, I did not know anyone in my class. As the days went by, I got to

know some of my fellow classmates, not knowing they would be some of the same people I would

finish school with. I was forced to be to class on time. If I was late, there was a probability that the

instructor could give a quiz. I had to learn that the instructor was not my mother or father. It is not their

job to make me come to class everyday. Whether I was there or not, class would still go on. When

the instructor gave me an assignment to do, it had to be done. He or she was not going to keep asking

me to the project.

Next, coming to college has taught me responsibility. I have to do what is expected of me in

order to get a good grade in the course. One semester, I had to buy a radio and put the radio together.

When it was assembled, it had to get three radio stations that played clear. That was not an easy task.

Keeping up with all the parts to the radio and making sure that I did not blow one of the transistors was

pretty tough. I had to make sure I put the right part in the right place. Turning the first IF stage was

easy but the second and third was difficult. Trying to keep the stations that I had already had and trying

to get the other stations was not easy at all. I had to finish the project in a timely manner in order to

receive the grade I wanted. So, getting my work in on time was one of the responsibilities I had

learned.

Last, coming to college is teaching me how to get a job. I did not know there are so many

different jobs in the avionic field. Companies like Boeing, FedEx, UPS, Delta, and Honeywell hire

avionic graduates with little or no experience. They often send information to the colleges telling the

them what they are looking for in potential employees. That lets the college know what to teach us and

what new equipment is coming out. That is how college is teaching me how to get a job.

When I came to college, I felt like a nerd. I have now come to realize that there is nothing

wrong with going to college. It is a place where I can new things, and it teaches me what is expected of

me as a future employee in my field of training. Although I complained in the beginning about how long

I had to stay in school, I know one day it will pay off. I hope this experience can be an inspiration to

my kids one day.

1. Brazil was facing hyperinflation i.e. supply of money was way beyond the demand for the money. Therefore Cardoso designed a real plan to drive out inflation form Brazil. His plan was based on the pegged exchange system. Under this system a country will peg the value of its currency to that of a major currency. The value of the real was pegged to that of the U.S. dollar and allowed to depreciate against the dollar by no more than 7.5% per year. To keep depreciation under control Brazil raised the interest rates repeatedly to maintain the value of the real against the dollar. The high cost of credit helped reduce the expansion of the money supply and brought inflation under control.

. Following steps were taken by the Brazilian government to defend the peg of the real against the U.S. dollar.

„³The Brazilian central bank began to purchase reals in the open markets using its foreign exchange reserves.

„³The government announced $10.8 billion in budget cuts.

„³ In order to increase the attractiveness of holding the real, the Brazilian government raised the interest rates to as high as %.

. Though the costs of pegging of the real against the dollar were quite high the policy did help the Brazilian government to drive inflation out of the Brazilian economy.

The costs were as follows

„³ Fall in the foreign exchange reserves because f the sale of the real by the central bank

„³ In spite of the budget cuts of approximately $10.8 million dollars traders continued to sell the real.

„³ Hike in the interest rates led to an increase in the cost of servicing the government debts, reducing the government tax receipts and increase in the deterioration of the fiscal deficit.

The benefits were defeat of decades of hyperinflation and stability in the Brazilian economy.

4. Under a floating exchange rate system Brazil would have been able to correct its trade deficit. The imbalance between the supply and demand of Brazil¡¦s currency in the foreign exchange market would have led to depreciation of its exchange rate. In turn, by making its exports cheaper and its imports more expensive, exchange rate depreciation could have corrected the trade deficit. On the other hand floating exchange rate system can lead to speculation of the country¡¦s currency. It can damage a country¡¦s economy by distorting export and import prices. Floating exchange rates would have implied a risky foreign investment in Brazil. This uncertainty would have dampened the growth of international trade and investment.

5. There would have been a major trade deficit in Latin America because imports would be higher than the exports. Floating exchange rate system would also make business planning extremely difficult. U.S. would think twice before investing in Latin America As result the Brazilian economy would be badly hit because Latin America absorbed 0% of all exports from the United States.

The Trench System

The trench system was the main defence of both sides of the Second World War when both sides met stalemate in the fields of northern Europe from the earliest days of the war.

Reserve Trenches

Do my essay on The Trench System CHEAP !

Reserve trenches are used to fall back to when the forward trenches are taken over by enemy troops also for storage uses.

Communication trenches

Communication trenches were dug at an angle to those facing the enemy. These trenches used to transport men, equipment and food supplies. The French had tramways installed while the British tended to rely on manpower to get the supplies to the trenches.

Listening posts

Running out at right angles from the frontline trenches were saps. These saps were about 0 yards long. Small groups of soldiers were sent to the listening posts (sap heads) and were given the task of finding out about the enemy. This included discovering information about enemy patrols, wiring parties, or sniper positions. After a heavy bombardment soldiers would be ordered to seize any new craters in No Mans Land, which could then be used as listening posts. From August 116 all British Army units were under orders to occupy any shell-hole within 60 yards of their forward trench.

Runners

The British Army trained some men to work as runners. Red armbands around their left forearms identified these men. As well as carrying messages runners were responsible for scouting the area before their battalion moved up to the front-line. Runners therefore needed the ability to accurately read complicated trench maps.

Sapping

A tactic used on the Western Front was to dig short trenches (saps) across No Mans Land. These were dug towards the enemy trenches and enabled soldiers to move forward without exposure to fire. Several saps would be dug along a section of front-line. These were then joined together at their far ends to create a new trench. Saps were also used as listening posts. Although sapping was slow and gruelling work, especially during summer months, it was a fairly safe way to make territorial gains.

Parapet

The front of the trench was known as the parapet. Both the parapet and the parados (the rear-side of the trench) were protected by two or three feet of sandbags.

Fire step

So that soldiers in front-line trenches could fire through the parapet, a fire-step was dug into the forward side of the trench. The fire-step was or ft high. It was on this that the sentries stood.

Duckboard

Most of the land on the Western Front was only a couple of feet above sea level. As soon as soldiers began to dig trenches they would invariably find water just below the surface. Constantly standing in water caused trench foot and other ailments. In an attempt to alleviate the problem, wooden planking, known as duckboards, were placed at the bottom of trenches and across other areas of muddy or waterlogged ground.

Barbed wire

Barbed wire was usually placed far enough from the trenches to prevent the enemy from the trenches to prevent the enemy from approaching close enough to lob grenades in. Sometimes barbed-wire entanglements were set up in order to channel attacking infantry into machine-gun fire.

Ancient Greece

Ancient Greek culture has a huge impact on the world today. It has affected the literature we read, the way we do mathematics, and even some of our television shows. It also has affected sports today. Sports like javelin, shot-put, and discus are sports that are still played today in track and field. Those were all invented during ancient Greek times by the Greek. One last big thing that has an impact on the world today is the philosophies of Greed philosophers. Philosophers such as Plato, Homer, and Socrates all had big parts on the philosophies we study today.

One big event that occurred during Greek time was the Trojan War. This war is still taught in schools today. This tale starts off when Paris goes to Sparta and gives Helen the apple. Her husband, menelous, had a feast for him. When Menelous went to go see the king of Knossos, Paris and Helen run off and sail to the city of Troy. But someone says that Paris forced Helen to go with him and plundered in the Aegean Sea before going to Troy. Menelous, who was the king in Lakonia, he begged his brother, Agamemnon who was king of Mycenae, to take revenge. After that Agamemnon sends troops to Troy to get Helen but they come back with nothing.

Custom Essays on ancient greece and the trojan war

After this Menelous forms an army. After the army seers read the signs that Troy would fall in the tenth year of the war, they sailed to Asia Minor. But they mistakably attack Teuthrania in Mysia opposite of Lesbos. They mistook this for Trojan territory and were defeated at the mouth of the Caicus River and driven back. Mysia was an ally to Troy. When Agamemnon offended Artemis his daughter Iphignia had to be sacrificed to change there fortune. After they sacrificed her the Greek armies reached the island Tenedos, which is visible from Troy. Eventually they reached the bay of Troy. The Trojans had allies from all over Asia Minor and Thrace. In the tenth year of the war the Greeks stopped attacking Asia Minor and attacked Troy. The best Greek warrior, Archilles, sacrificed twelve Trojan nobles after the battle which left his friend Patroclus. After this in the battle of Scaeon Gate, Paris shoots archilles in the heel, the only place he was vulnerable. Even though the Philoktetes killed Paris, the Trojans still refused to give up Helen. A wooden horse was built to access the city with armed men from Odysseus of Ithaca and Menelous hidden in it. They left the horse as a thank you to Athena and the Greeks burned their camps and sailed away as if they were defeated. Trojans found the horse and the rubbish from the camps. After they got the horse the men inside it jumped out and killed all Trojans left in the city. After this massacre no males were left in the city of Troy.

This is how they won the Trojan War. The famous story of the wooden horse wasn?t just a fairy tale. This was just one of the great events and stories that came out of Ancient Greece.

Sirj sat in anguish as his stomach was thoroughly vacant. He hungrily cried for food, wondering what he had for breakfast that did not satisfy his famine. As his pondering mind was intensely working, his physic's teacher was handing out busy work for the pupils to toil on. Sirj paused his investigation for a moment to begin learning, which was not accomplished very often. "Hey, there's little snails!" announced Sirj. The teacher's handout on measuring motion had used snails in a race as an exercise for calculating the motion of an object. Sirj was perplexed by the physiological assignment, but the snails indisputably amused him. "Ha, ha," he chuckled, "I like these silly snails." As Sirj studied the circular mollusks, he promptly recalled what he filled his mouth with that morning. "Hey! I know what I ate now! I had Cinni-minis for breakfast!" It was at that moment that Sirj had managed to comprehend a similarity between a snail and a cinnamon roll.

The first resemblance Sirj noted was the appearance of the two. Both the snail and the cinnamon roll have a round coil. The coil, leading to the center of the object, has a dark color in the crevice of the spirals. Also, both items customarily have a tan exterior. Sirj also noticed that the two items were not only circular, but they were three-dimensional as well. Finally he observed that the coils, which define the outside of the items, tighten as they wind toward the core.

Sirj, being strangely fascinated by the resemblance of the two, studied the object further to find that the composition of two have similarities as well. The two have a coil-like shell covering soft, tender insides. These items both have edible components, however, escargot has a slimy, delicate inside while the cinnamon roll has a dry, spongy inside.

"You can eat them both, too!" exclaimed Sirj. The snail and the cinnamon roll are both typical entres to consume. While one is typically made for breakfast, the other is prepared for elegant dinners. Although Sirj never had the opportunity to experience the essence of escargot for dinner, he knew that it was arranged particularly in elegant restaurants. He is, however, familiar with the scrumptious flavor of cinnamon rolls.

Cheap Custom Essays on Snail vs. Cinnamon Roll

Sirj's stomach rumbled again at the thought of his minor breakfast in his kitchen that morning. "Yes," he thought, "both of these foods are made in the kitchen." Sirj was correct, cinnamon rolls and escargots are made in kitchens. In addition to this, snails and cinnamon rolls originate from the outside. A mollusk is typically found anywhere from shorelines to all bodies of fresh water, and in tropical areas to mountains and deserts. They may also be found in one's own backyard. A cinnamon role derives from natural ingredients such as eggs, cinnamon, salt, and flour. These natural constituents develop outside as well, creating yet another correspondence between these two objects. Conclusively, both items find themselves served to a table of famished individuals.
