Standardized tests are exams designed to measure a student's scholastic performance. These tests are a controversial issue, because some people feel the test do not show the students' intelligence. I am one of these people. What the test may cover may not be what the students have learned in class. Well the simple answer to the question is that no test can accommodate the difference in social classes (Banta, p.). Upper to middle class society usually have someone to help them do their homework at home. The lower class society, unfortunately does not. My mother, who is an independent high school teacher, works with people in this situation. She has found that this is partly due to the parents lack of education. The parents, therefore, are ill-equipped to help their children with homework. They place a lower value on education. This can make a big difference and allow the cycle to continue.

Critics also argue, "… that the exams do not accurately assess the scholastic performance of female students. Females consistently earn higher grades than males in both high school and college, but their average scores on standardized tests are lower…. " (Encarta, p.). Maybe this occurs because females are social people and don't like to sit for long periods of time. I know I am this way. If I had a choice I would prefer to be taught what is on the test, if that is what needs to take place in order to be evaluated correctly. It would not be an accurately assessment if I have not had instruction on the subject they are testing me on.

Another argument against standardized testing is the multiple choice questions. Do they really have the right answer? A student may deliberate about this because some tests have all correct answers, but one that is the better choice. So, how can it be wrong? Which is why, "the arguments against the multiple choice question tests [should] allow an individual to give reasons for an answer they have chosen" (Banta, p.). This is a vital part of the test. People who come from different backgrounds are going to have a different explanation of why they chose that answer. Which brings us back to what the students were taught in class and how it has been assimilated.

Curriculum is said to be affected by the standardized test. Some critics say, "that teachers are going to teach what will be covered on the test and unfortunately the information not covered on the test is not taught" (Banta, p.). I know that if students have to be tested for a long period of time they get tired. In high school I was not taught all the information that would be on the test and our test scores were not up to the standards. This was not just because we were not being taught the test, but also because many students did not care about taking the test due to being told that it did not affect our grade. Therefore, students did not take the test seriously.

Nunneries offered women the opportunity to lead a religious life, obtain an education, and take on responsibilities they would not have been able to in the world out side of the nunnery. As local landowners and employers, many nuns played an important part in the community. In reality landowners whether they were male or female were powerful figures in medieval society. An unmarried woman of property had the equal rights of a man. However when a woman got married she gave up all her land and rights to the man she married. On his death she was entitled to one third of his land upon which to support herself.

Women according to Chaucer, were selfish, spiteful and vain. All women to him possessed these qualities but he choose to bring one out more than the other two in each woman he wrote about. The first woman he wrote of was the prioress, she was a selfish woman who did not honor her vows to her church. Chaucer says it best when he says "Her greatest oath was only "By St. Loy!""(line14). In her using "By St. Loy!" Chaucer is making reference to St. Eligius, patron of goldsmiths and courters. This is just one way the prioress is shown to be selfish, in it her love of gold and herself is shown. Nuns during those times took a vow of poverty and celibacy, in the prioress's love for gold and herself she breaks those vows many times. The first thing we see is that she feeds herself only fine things like meat and white bread and then we see that she wears a trinket with the inscription "love conquers all" which shows that she longs for a love. The prioress to many is very selfish for doing those things. She knew how she would have to live and she still went along with becoming a nun. In her wanting to both be a nun and live a wealthy life of fine things she shows that she is selfish and believes she should always have things her way.

The wife of Bath is a very spiteful women, who desired only a few simple things in life. The wife of Bath is a tough woman with a mind of her own and she is not afraid to speak it. She intimidates men and woman alike due to the strength she possesses. But instead of showing this as a positive characteristic, Chaucer makes her toothless and ugly. However, Chaucer, instead of portraying her low-social class as shameful, showed that she is actually prudent and eloquent. Subliminal messages, which relay a message without acknowledgement, are heard in numerous songs throughout the country. Attempts to maliciously utilize psychological conditioning have been discovered as far as children's movies. Since most people do not drill their children with moral lullabies throughout the night, conditioning in our society is less extreme than the oxygen suffocating society. The primary difference between the conditioning in the Brave New World and the conditioning today is consequently our freedom of choice. Our freedom of choice allows us to develop opinions and preferences, which creates unique individuals in a society. All social classes efficiently work together through supply and demand to achieve economic and social balance.

Overall, the Brave New World utilized extreme conditioning to restrain the thoughts of the society. Unlike our society, the government in this utopia tells the citizens exactly what is right and wrong. The government's excessive control and conditioning caused the citizens of the Brave New World to loose all uniqueness. My mentors throughout my childhood were my grandma Cozetta, my Mom, and Elmo. My grandma Cozetta is the kind of grandma that tries her hardest to pump you full of the most unhealthy food known to mankind the minute you walk through the door. She would always take my brother and me to pool every day of the summer that we were at her house when we were little. My grandma Cozetta was the first person to teach me how to use a cash register; she would go through her convenience store like she was a customer and come to the counter to pay. She even taught me how to watch for "those sneaky people" who would hide their things in front of the register so the cashier couldn't see it. My mom influenced me throughout my childhood through her love of animals. Mom could never do an animal any harm. Our animals were always the fattest, and when people would come over and say, " Oh that's a pretty horse, she's a chunk though, isn't she." Mom would just say, "No, she's just spoiled."

Other influences or mentors from my childhood would have to be any of my elementary school teachers. Mrs. Gorney, my kindergarten teacher, was almost always in a good mood and was always patient with us five-year-olds. Mrs. Bowen, my first grade teacher, stern, but always kind and helpful and made you want to do better at everything. Mrs. Pallodino, my second grade teacher, made everything fun. Mr. Dorsey, my third grade teacher, was…a character. He always made everybody laugh. Mrs. Muirhead, my fourth grade teacher, let our class do a lot of hands-on projects like collecting spores from mushrooms, adopting a bat, and making homemade ice cream. Finally, my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Whitenberg, who made me cry because I made a C in English, made me sit next to her desk all year long, and made me want to pass her class with an A just to prove her wrong.

TODAY

Today I have learned that life is more than just playing flag football, riding my horse up to the house after school, and playing in tadpole ponds. Life is about everything you do and the people around you. Life is working hard to get what you want and where you want to be and then working a little bit harder to get or go somewhere better.

Today I have learned a lot about love too. Love is what holds the world together. Some people look at the world and see a big mess of "people, who just don't care anymore," but if you think about it, if people didn't care anymore what would the world have done the day the World Trade Center was leveled by terrorists. The world would have gone on like nothing had happened. American flags would not have sold out at every sore in the country, mass aide would not have been given to New York City, and we would have been the same as we were September 10, 001. While residing outside of the United States for several years, I was never given the opportunity to identify myself with music, art, or dance. All though there are still some who feel that rap music is to angry, or promotes violence, I have come to realize that quite often these songs are heartfelt stories about the life of those telling the story. As time moves on, rap music continues to flourish as a culture that many can identify themselves with. Rap is known for bringing together a tangle of some of the most complex social, and political issues in todays American society. Rap initially caught on because of the fact that it offered young urban New Yorkers a chance to freely express themselves and it was accessible to anyone.

I have attended several Armenian music festivals, these festivals are such a joy to our community because it allows other members in our society to come and understand our culture, individuals are able to listen to the vibrant music which is accompanied by percussion instruments.

My cultural expressions through Armenian dance, music, art and religion insures the survival of the Armenian existence, and are alive today in the United States and many countries around the world, with its center in Republic of Armenia. Despite the great losses which the Armenian culture suffered during the centuries of foreign domination, it showed the durability and originality of its creators. I am very ecstatic that the United States has given many of us the opportunity to introduce and reflect in many ways when it comes to cultural expression and I have not viewed any resistance by society we live in.
