If someone were to look up the word woman in the dictionary they would get some thing similar to this "an adult female human being. (Microsoft Encarta) There are also many other words to describe a woman from today's words like chick and girl to back in the middle ages and medieval times when women were known as maidens or damsels. For many years women have not been viewed as equals to men up until the last century, and yet the role of women in society is still constantly changing. Geoffrey Chaucer gives his readers a slight glimpse into the life of a few women of the medieval society in his collection of stories known as The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer portrays the men and women of this time period quiet accurately. Chaucer gives his readers a glimpse into the lives of a nun, a monk, a friar, a lady known as "the wife of bath" and a group of merchants and their wives. While letting the reader into the lives of these people Chaucer makes quite a bit of a difference in the way he describes different sexes; Chaucer, seemed to lead the reader to believe that women had an evil-like quality, and that they always tempt and take from men. They were depicted as selfish, spiteful and vain. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales in the late 1400s. Chaucer cleverly reveals a particular social condition of England during the time; in this period, the status, role, and attitudes towards women were clearly different from that of today. Women were seen by many to be inferior to men during the middle ages. Women were taught by the church that they should be humble and compliant to their fathers and husbands. However very few of the women during the middle ages could stay quietly at home because most of them had to work for a living. The women would work in the fields beside their husbands and fathers, while at the same time feeding and clothing their family. The wives and daughters of the craftsmen were often employed and operated as tradeswomen on their own. In the towns, women worked in a variety of occupations. Some women were shopkeepers, others were spinners, while some were bakers. Both married and unmarried women were expected to work for a living. Often women would do a combination of several jobs because they were paid less than men. The women also dressed differently depending on their status, their status being whether they were married or not. Young single women often wore their hair loose where as married women were expected to keep their hair covered at all times in a linen as a sign of modesty. Many unmarried women entered convents and nunneries where they would live their lives in a similar way to a monk. Nunneries offered women the opportunity to lead a religious life, obtain an education, and take on responsibilities they would not have been able to in the world out side of the nunnery. As local landowners and employers, many nuns played an important part in the community. In reality landowners whether they were male or female were powerful figures in medieval society. An unmarried woman of property had the equal rights of a man. However when a woman got married she gave up all her land and rights to the man she married. On his death she was entitled to one third of his land upon which to support herself.

Women according to Chaucer, were selfish, spiteful and vain. All women to him possessed these qualities but he choose to bring one out more than the other two in each woman he wrote about. The first woman he wrote of was the prioress, she was a selfish woman who did not honor her vows to her church. Chaucer says it best when he says "Her greatest oath was only "By St. Loy!""(line14). In her using "By St. Loy!" Chaucer is making reference to St. Eligius, patron of goldsmiths and courters. This is just one way the prioress is shown to be selfish, in it her love of gold and herself is shown. Nuns during those times took a vow of poverty and celibacy, in the prioress's love for gold and herself she breaks those vows many times. The first thing we see is that she feeds herself only fine things like meat and white bread and then we see that she wears a trinket with the inscription "love conquers all" which shows that she longs for a love. The prioress to many is very selfish for doing those things. She knew how she would have to live and she still went along with becoming a nun. In her wanting to both be a nun and live a wealthy life of fine things she shows that she is selfish and believes she should always have things her way.

The wife of Bath is a very spiteful women, who desired only a few simple things in life. The wife of Bath is a tough woman with a mind of her own and she is not afraid to speak it. She intimidates men and woman alike due to the strength she possesses. But instead of showing this as a positive characteristic, Chaucer makes her toothless and ugly. However, Chaucer, instead of portraying her low-social class as shameful, showed that she is actually prudent and eloquent. The wife of Bath has also had five different husbands and countless affairs, thus breaking innocent men's hearts. Chaucer tells about her many affairs best when he states "And knew the remedies for love's mischances /An art in which she knew the oldest dances" Chaucer portrayed her as spiteful but in reality she was just a woman trying to make a better life for herself in a society where women were looked down upon.

Conditioning

Imagine being asked the question, What do you want to eat?" and

spontaneously responding for a hamburger without being able to contemplate between the

Mushroom Melt Burger and the Chicken Gratella Sandwich. Usually taken for granted,

each individual in our society is capable of making this miniscule decision. In Huxleys

Brave New World, excessive government control leads to the elimination of choice

from each individual by scientific procedures such as psychological and physical

conditioning. Consequently, the society in this Brave New World looses all uniqueness

and individuality due to their overpowering government.

All conditioning aims at that making people like their unescapable social

destiny,(Huxley,16) states the Director of this futuristic dictatorship. Attempting to

optimize efficiency, this futuristic government utilizes conditioning to force the citizens to

like what they have and reject what they do not have. We also predestine and

condition, states Mr. Foster, We decant our babies as socialized human beings, as

Alphas or Epsilons, as future sewage workers...(Huxley,1). Therefore, everyone

happily works together to get things done. The process of creating these social classes

occurs by merely decreasing the level of oxygen for lower classed embryos and increasing it

for higher classed embryos. Nothing like oxygen-shortage for keeping an embryo below

par,(Huxley,14) exclaims the director. Next, the embryo is physically conditioned for its

specific function in society. Rocket-plane engineers consistently rotate [t]o improve their

sense of balance,(Huxley,17) while chemical workers are trained in the toleration of

lead, caustic soda, tar,[and] chlorine(Huxley, 17). Finally, a psychological conditioning is

administered to the children of the Brave New World through repetitious hypnopedia.

Five hundred repetitions once a week from thirteen to seventeen,(Huxley,100) declares

Bernard. Phrases such as, When the individual feels, the community reels,(Huxley,4)

and ...cleanliness is next to fordliness,(Huxley,110) are embedded into the minds of the

society during their sleep. The obsessive conditioning causes the citizens of this society to

resemble machines. The repetitions program the morals of the Brave New World into its

citizens, preventing them from free thinking.

Conditioning occurs millions of times everyday throughout society. We are conditioned slower and less extreme than the Brave New World. Mothers, who

are deceases in the utopian society, consistently use conditioning as a parenting technique on their children. They simply wish to embed the desired morals into their child, hopeing that their conditioning technique will be effective. A common cure for obsessive thumb sucking involves physical and psychological conditioning. A mother smears a bitter tasting substance onto a childs thumb. After tasting the distinct substance a few times, the child learns the consequences of his dirty habit. Eventually, the child's mind is conditioned not to stick any digits into his or her mouth. Unlike the Brave New World, a mother doesn't force a child to like or dislike something; she simply informs her child of her preferences, leaving the child to choose. Similar to the Brave New World, we are all predestined and born into social classes. Instead of everyone happily working in contentment of their social status, some people are unhappy with their status and seek to change. In my opinion, our societies greatest aspect is our ability to change. If anyone is sufficiently motivated, he or she can work hard and change almost anything. Physically, we condition our bodies to meet our specific needs. Body builders condition their muscles to grow bigger and stronger, developing tremendous strength. The significant difference between our physical conditioning and the Brave New Worlds is our free will. We have the choice of developing gigantic boulders for muscles or none at all. Psychologically, we are conditioned everyday without knowing. Commercials are repeated thousands of times every day, containing jingles that stick in your head. These commercials aim to limit your power of choice when a decision must be made. Subliminal messages, which relay a message without acknowledgement, are heard in numerous songs throughout the country. Attempts to maliciously utilize psychological conditioning have been discovered as far as children's movies. Since most people do not drill their children with moral lullabies throughout the night, conditioning in our society is less extreme than the oxygen suffocating society. The primary difference between the conditioning in the Brave New World and the conditioning today is consequently our freedom of choice. Our freedom of choice allows us to develop opinions and preferences, which creates unique individuals in a society. All social classes efficiently work together through supply and demand to achieve economic and social balance.

Overall, the Brave New World utilized extreme conditioning to restrain the thoughts of the society. Unlike our society, the government in this utopia tells the citizens exactly what is right and wrong. The government's excessive control and conditioning caused the citizens of the Brave New World to loose all uniqueness. Unfortunately, no one in our society has the privilege of choosing their heritage, but everyone has the power of changing who they want to be.

I was born December 7, 185, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Saint Francis Hospital. My father gave me my first name, Miranda, naming me after a place in New Mexico. My mother gave me my middle name, Kyle, saying she liked it because of its Irish sound.

My father was a salesman who greatly enjoyed the things of the world. My mother was a loving mother who worked when she was told to do so, and took care of my brother and me.

I lived the first four years of my life in Prue, Oklahoma. My younger brother, who was born just fifteen months after me, made the remaining two years and ten months a living nightmare. For example, one early Christmas morning I jumped out of bed eager to see what gifts Santa had left me the night before; only to find that a small monster had crept in just after Santa Clause had left and mangled all the gift wrappings, tearing them to shreds.

When I was five years old we moved to an old racehorse farm west of Mannford, Oklahoma. There was one huge barn with two separate sides and twenty horse stalls total. Behind the barn there was a horse walker, a device made to exercise horses without doing much itself, and about a hundred feet away from the walker was a round pen and also an arena. There was even an average size dirt racetrack in a small pasture to the south side of the house. I used to take my horse, Drifter, on this racetrack and we would play all day. When I would get tired of riding him, or just thirsty, I would stop, wherever I was in the pasture, get off of Drifter and walk to the house. Fifteen or twenty minutes later I would go back out to the pasture and there Drifter would be in the exact spot I has left him, just waiting on my return.

When I came to Mannford was also when I met my first best-friend, Aubree. Aubree and I were inseparable. We would play in mud puddles for hours on end, we rode horses together, and we caught tadpoles together. I was there the first time Aubree got kicked by a horse, and she was there the first time I was bit by a horse. We would race my horse against her pony and we would always argue over who had won the race.

I about second grade my younger brother started playing flag football for the Mannford Pirates. Two weeks into his practices I started playing too and became their quarter back. We weren't very good, not as good as the Raiders anyway, the Salvation Army and Mannford's number one team, but we tried very hard. So when most of our players switched coaches and team names in my fifth grade year, our determination paid off and we won first place in our class.

My mentors throughout my childhood were my grandma Cozetta, my Mom, and Elmo. My grandma Cozetta is the kind of grandma that tries her hardest to pump you full of the most unhealthy food known to mankind the minute you walk through the door. She would always take my brother and me to pool every day of the summer that we were at her house when we were little. My grandma Cozetta was the first person to teach me how to use a cash register; she would go through her convenience store like she was a customer and come to the counter to pay. She even taught me how to watch for "those sneaky people" who would hide their things in front of the register so the cashier couldn't see it. My mom influenced me throughout my childhood through her love of animals. Mom could never do an animal any harm. Our animals were always the fattest, and when people would come over and say, " Oh that's a pretty horse, she's a chunk though, isn't she." Mom would just say, "No, she's just spoiled."

Other influences or mentors from my childhood would have to be any of my elementary school teachers. Mrs. Gorney, my kindergarten teacher, was almost always in a good mood and was always patient with us five-year-olds. Mrs. Bowen, my first grade teacher, stern, but always kind and helpful and made you want to do better at everything. Mrs. Pallodino, my second grade teacher, made everything fun. Mr. Dorsey, my third grade teacher, was…a character. He always made everybody laugh. Mrs. Muirhead, my fourth grade teacher, let our class do a lot of hands-on projects like collecting spores from mushrooms, adopting a bat, and making homemade ice cream. Finally, my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Whitenberg, who made me cry because I made a C in English, made me sit next to her desk all year long, and made me want to pass her class with an A just to prove her wrong.

TODAY

Today I have learned that life is more than just playing flag football, riding my horse up to the house after school, and playing in tadpole ponds. Life is about everything you do and the people around you. Life is working hard to get what you want and where you want to be and then working a little bit harder to get or go somewhere better.

Today I have learned a lot about love too. Love is what holds the world together. Some people look at the world and see a big mess of "people, who just don't care anymore," but if you think about it, if people didn't care anymore what would the world have done the day the World Trade Center was leveled by terrorists. The world would have gone on like nothing had happened. American flags would not have sold out at every sore in the country, mass aide would not have been given to New York City, and we would have been the same as we were September 10, 001. Love holds the nation and the world together in times like those.

While residing outside of the United States for several years, I was never given the opportunity to identify myself with music, art, or dance. Even though I was not forced to listen to music I did not like, as a child I did not have my own cultural expression. After moving to the United States, I became fascinated by cultural expressions. Everywhere I turned I saw something new, something that I might identify myself with, whether it was clothing, music, school or religion. There have been times when I have focused on these expressions with a critical eye, however I soon come to realize the real meaning of cultural expressions. I consider music as being one of the major points of cultural expressions. Music can be explored by all and viewed in many different ways.

I am a true lover of music, however when rap music came about, I though that it should have been banned from the radio and even selling of the actual lyrics. I had a misconception of rap, I felt that this was a result of the media. I could not understand how someone could turn a beautiful thing like music into a bunch of words that meant nothing to anyone. That is where I was completely wrong. It took me a while to understand that even though rap wasn't how I expressed my culture, there were others in the world that clearly identified themselves with it. In general, rappers tend to rap about how to avoid gang pressures and still earn local respect, how to deal with the loss of several friends to gunfights and drug overdoses, and tell elaborate, and sometimes violent tales. All though there are still some who feel that rap music is to angry, or promotes violence, I have come to realize that quite often these songs are heartfelt stories about the life of those telling the story. As time moves on, rap music continues to flourish as a culture that many can identify themselves with. Rap is known for bringing together a tangle of some of the most complex social, and political issues in todays American society. Rap initially caught on because of the fact that it offered young urban New Yorkers a chance to freely express themselves and it was accessible to anyone.

Rap music clearly affected society and created a huge culture which many follow. Rap gives us a chance to express ourselves and tell our life stories in a different way, one that is more comfortable for some. Cultural expression is something an individual can associate themselves with for example rap, as well as graffiti, and break dancing. Rap also offers unlimited challenges as there are no real set of rule. Another aspect that made it a cultural expression was that rap could be about any and/or everything. Now that mainstream America has become used to the idea that this music that was once confined to the urban sections of our country, is now a part of everyday life, it has become easier to identify with. The original intent of the cultural movement is still in place, and has great social significance to the world of music. Because rap has evolved into such a large industry, it gives the illusion of being a quick escape from the harshness of inner city life, once more identifying with cultural expressions.&

Help with essay on culture

In todays society everywhere you look, you can see people of all ages wearing clothing inspired by rap artists and even the very way that we speak has been affected as slang becomes a more acceptable form of expression. Today the rap movement is coming on strong. The movement is still trying to teach people about rap and its elements. Rap as a cultural expression has given a voice to people that were formerly left unheard, and given urban youths entry into a three billion dollar a year business. The rap culture is now incorporated in several different ways including the movies and TV, clothes, speech and the way we interact with each other.

The culture I identify myself with is the Armenian American culture. Within this culture lie several different aspects including music, dance, and art. I feel that cultural adaptation within the United States is by choice, and society has allowed me to express my culture openly. When I was younger I was under the impression that Armenian music, dance, and art were deemed universal and found it very hard to understand why my classmates where not intrigued the way I was. Surely now twenty years later, I am thrilled that my cultural expressions are part of my daily life and that I am given the opportunity to share these expressions with others. Armenian music offers many rich means of cultural expression, it is a creative inspiration, mainly because of the parallel to the history of the Armenian nation. I have attended several Armenian music festivals, these festivals are such a joy to our community because it allows other members in our society to come and understand our culture, individuals are able to listen to the vibrant music which is accompanied by percussion instruments.

My cultural expressions through Armenian dance, music, art and religion insures the survival of the Armenian existence, and are alive today in the United States and many countries around the world, with its center in Republic of Armenia. Despite the great losses which the Armenian culture suffered during the centuries of foreign domination, it showed the durability and originality of its creators. I am very ecstatic that the United States has given many of us the opportunity to introduce and reflect in many ways when it comes to cultural expression and I have not viewed any resistance by society we live in.

Abstract

Learning is a lifetime experience for all of us. Whether in a formal or informal manner we all strive to improve our knowledge of the world we live in. Today's working adults face the hurdles of balancing a heavy workload and family responsibilities with the desire and need to continue their educational advancement. The advancement in technology has enabled many to meet these challenges by bringing the school and its classrooms into the homes. Internet graduate courses are quickly becoming the norm in the American culture and now in the subcultures of our city universities. In this article we examine how two such institutions have not only met this challenge but also proven to be very successful for all.

In correlation with the Functionalist Perspective, University of Phoenix and Webster University masters' degree program seems to be most functional with today's active adult student. In examining this article through the Functional Perspective, both universities offer various onsite locations and online access, thus catering to the need of the adult student, their career path and family life. As defined, "the functionalist perspective emphasizes the way that parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability."(Schaefer pp. 1) According to the National Center for Education Statistics, pursuit of a master's degree is growing at the fastest rate of increase for any kind of college degree." (Article pp. par.1) In contrast, "Phoenix also raises eyebrows in some higher education circles, but the students keep coming." (Article pp. 4, par.8) The Functionalist Perspective allows us from a sociological standpoint to examine the overall opinionated thought process of more than one point of view in society. Therefore, although the universities present a mass education, there are still speculators that are skeptical of its production.

Custom writing service can write essays on Lifetime Learning

Online degrees fill a significant void that has developed over the years. Traditional brick and mortar educational institutions have not been able to keep up with the demand nor do they supply the flexibility required by todays student. "Public appetite for advanced career-enhancing, postgraduate education in these disciplines has grown faster than the capacity of campus-bound, traditional universities to satisfy it." (Article pp , par )

The article was about graduate programs at alternative schools, yet the entire educational experience offered by both the University of Phoenix and Webster University needs to be explored. Both of these universities are based in functionalist theory. They were established mainly for working adults over the age of 5 (Article pp1, par 5). What are especially interesting are the latent function and the dysfunction that continue to keep both universities in the public's eye.

One of the latent functions of a distance learning education would be how students are forced into communicating with each other. In a traditional classroom environment, with an instructor who is there to physically keep discussions going, the need to learn something about fellow classmates is not apparent. In an untraditional classroom, such as the one Webster University and University of Phoenix provide, students are responsible for keeping dialogue and discussions going. One of the latent functions now becomes self-starting students who are able to get to know one another much better then they would have in a traditional classroom.

A dysfunctional function with non-traditional education is that this type of educational endeavor gives the perception that on-line or distance learning is easier to cheat on assignments and easier overall to achieve a degree. Both of these universities are fully accredited schools of higher education and would not have received this distinction if a system of checks and balances were not in place. Even with the criticism given to both schools, students continue to enroll because these schools serve a needed purpose to society (Post, 00).

Summary

In conclusion this article addresses an alternative source of higher education for the working world. From the functionalist perspective, both Webster University and The University of Phoenix offer working adults the opportunity to further pursue their educational needs. If working adults are to succeed among the top ranked companies of today, it is imperative to advance their education. Online learning allows students to fulfill their responsibilities to both their employers and their families while continuing to maintain stability and balance in all angles of their lives. Both universities are producing graduates who are able to think independently and are able to master critical thinking skills that are necessary in today's working environment. With continued interest in these types of programs more and more adult students are continuing their lifelong learning.

Though much criticism has been expressed towards both universities, they have established strong creditability by serving a majority of today's working society. From the functionalist perspective both institutions are providing society options and opportunities for lifelong learning.

Gender Bias in Children's Media

As I walked into KB toys my memory as a child all came back to me. When I was little I would have done anything to spend a day in Toys'R'Us. Even if it was just looking! A toy store is like heaven to a little child. So many things to look at and touch. Gender Bias is a big thing now when you walk into a toy store. That's one of the first things that I noticed. Today there are two main dividers between males and females besides sex that I have noticed. Toys are the biggest things you see gender bias in. Companies are aiming towards young people because young people are easy to mesmerize. There are two main points I would like to talk about. What's on the outside of the box and whats said in commercials.

First thing I want to go over is how toys are labeled. This was a big thing that stood out to me while I was in the store. Girls' toys said things like "girls only" or "just for girls". The words were always written in big letters with bright coloring. When you walk over to the boys toys none of them say things like that, but a lot of them have pictures of people on them and it's always a male. Being bias against genders isn't that big of a deal with boys, but more with girls. What I mean by that is it's always a girl complaining that a toy is marketed towards a male not a male complaining that they don't have a mall madness game. Why is that?

One toy that I would like to tell you about is a game called Teen. This was a game that stuck out when I walked in the ale. They did a good job with this game by making the box bright blue with flowers all over it. It's a game made for two or more players ages ten and it's made by Cardinal. In big letters on the front it says HEY GIRLS. The letters were also outlined in a bright color to get the buyers attention. Then next to it in the next size down font it said, "All about Guys, Real life, Celebs, Beauty and Style." On the top of the box it said, "Take the "GO GIRL" Challenge if you dare!" That right there is really sexist. On the back of the box it has a bunch of pictures of girls. When it describes how to play the game it says, "Along the way, you'll get crazy challenges, take risks with the GO GIRL questions." They also give a couple of questions that the game asks. One of them is name the guy that you think deserves a better girl then the one they have? And this is a game for ten year olds? All the games I could find that were made with this company where for girls. Games shouldn't be made just for girls. I looked all over the shelves and I couldn't find one game that was aimed towards buys.

Do my essay on Gender Bias in Childrens Toys CHEAP !

I read an article a long time ago that said if you put a bunch of kids that don't know the difference between male and female together and gave them a bunch of toys, each sex would play with all the toys. If you put a bunch of kids together that knew the difference between male and female, the girls would play with the girl toys and some of the boy toys and the boys would play with the boy toys. If they did play with the girls' toys it was because they were destroying them. So it goes to show that it's the sex that determines what they play with. The younger kids don't care about what toys they play with because they don't understand yet. Advertisement plays a big role in dividing toys. There have been a lot of efforts to narrow the gap between toys for boys and toys for girls, but they still fall into gender categories. An article in Popular Culture Review summed it up pretty well by saying, "boys do, girls are" (Michael, and Susan ). Advertisements provide children with models whose behaviors are reinforced. Friends may reinforce girl models in ads when they play with dolls. The characters have both social contact and fun. They may even have the opportunity to be loved when they hold their dolls. Boys reinforce one another in ads for action figures. They have fun, social contact, and the chance to be aggressive and win. I've noticed that there is a predominance of male models in advertising. The ads that had girls in it were ads with dolls and girl things. Not only did I notice that males appeared more frequently than females, but male voices occurred more frequently as announcers or narrators than girls. Even in advertisements that were directed towards females. Boys' commercials always show them in action and girls' commercials always show them in the kitchen and at home. Girls playing with dolls and wanting to be popular and beautiful. Boys playing with airplanes and mechanical toys.

That's just some of the evidence that I wanted to share with you. Is it far for boys to see "girls only" on a pagage or for girls not to be pictured holding a truck? These are the questions we need to address. Maybe one of these days we won't have to target towards certain sexes like the Teen game does and maybe one day we won't have to have difference between commercials. My opinion is the ones that complain about all this are girls. Guys think it's cool and can care less if there is a game geared towards girls. Girls are the ones complaining that they can't play with toys geared towards guys. Girls have girl things and guys have guy things.

AMY TAN

Tan, Amy, Asian American novelist, was born in Oakland, Calif., on February 1, 15 approximately two and a half years after her parents emigrated from China. Amy Tan grew up in a rather large family as the second-to-youngest child. She attended high school in Switzerland and has been educated at eight different colleges, including Berkley and Oregon University.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, she was fiercely opposed to her Chinese background in her youth, and she even went as far as sleeping with a clothespin on her nose hoping to narrow its Asian shape. Tans ties to China have so much to do with her mother. Though her father was a deeply religious (Christian) man, her mother always kept her Chinese traditions on reserve. When Tans father and brother both became terminally ill with malignant brain tumors, her mother called on as many of the Chinese religious traditions that she could. Tan says she is still haunted by these spirits that her mother so faithfully believed in; her works are especially reflective of these childhood experiences. After Tans father and her older brother died from brain tumors within eight months of each other in 168, her mother revealed that she had three daughters from a previous marriage still living in China. Tan felt sure that she was, in her own words, the wicked daughter, so she became more rebellious and rejected her background with a renewed vigor.

After this family tragedy, Tans mother took her and her younger brother to live in Europe. Tan finished high school in Montreux, Switzerland, and the family returned to the United States shortly thereafter. She attended numerous institutions before receiving a masters degree in linguistics from San Jose State University in 176. Though she has always had writing in her blood (her first published work was What the Library Means to Me at age eight), Tan has not always been the well-known author she is now. She has held quite a few odd jobs--bartender and carhop, for example. After graduation she worked as a consultant for developmentally disabled children until she turned to freelance writing in the early 180s.

The overwhelming success that Amy Tan achieved with her first novel, The Joy Luck Club (18), resulted in part from the vividness of her recollections of growing up as a Chinese American. Although the novel dealt with the problematic relationships between Chinese-born parents and their Americanized children, Tan was reluctant to be considered a spokesperson for Asian Americans. She felt she was dealing with a personal conflict rather than with the raising of political consciousness. More importantly, she wanted her literary accomplishments to be regarded as aesthetic creations rather than as vehicles for cultural or historical edification, and the success of her subsequent novels did indeed establish Amy Tan as a notable literary presence whose bestsellers generated widespread, multi-ethnic appeal.

As a release from working 0 hours a week as a well-established business writer, Tan decided in 185 to pursue her dream of writing fiction. She attended a writers workshop, read lots of fiction, and began writing a short story. The short story she composed, called Endgame, was about a young girls success as a chess champion. Endgame eventually became a part of The Joy Luck Club, a novel which actually began as a series of short stories written for magazines.

The Joy Luck Club, her most widely-read work, was nominated for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and was the recipient of the Commonwealth Gold Award and the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, along with the massive amounts of praise it received from critics everywhere. Her latest book, The Hundred Secret Senses, is sure to be as successful as The Joy Luck Club and the subsequent novel, The Kitchen Gods Wife.

The Joy Luck Club related the experiences of four Chinese mothers, their Chinese American daughters, and the struggle of the two generations to communicate with one another. Tan was strongly motivated to write this novel when, after her mother was hospitalized due to an apparent heart attack, Tan decided to get to know her mother better, take her to China, and write a book. Finally, upon meeting two of her half-sisters on her trip to China with her mother in 187, she felt a sense of belonging, and she reflected this feeling and wove parts of her mothers life into The Joy Luck Club. Tans first novel met with instant critical and commercial success. It became the longest running bestseller on The New York Times bestseller list in 18. The book was also made into a feature film, for which Tan co-write the screenplay.

Tan followed her first successful novel with a second novel, The Kitchen Gods Wife, in 11. As with her first novel, her style was infused with flashbacks, storytelling, and a strong sense of history. Her second novel became a number one bestseller on The New York Times hardcover list. Her third novel, which focused on the bond between sisters, used ghosts and other unearthly phenomena to explore the intricacies of human relationships. It appeared on the bestseller list upon its release. In addition to her novels, Amy Tan wrote two childrens books, The Moon Lady (1) and The Chinese Siamese Cat, with illustrator Gretchen Schields.

The author now lives in San Francisco with her husband, Lou DeMattei, and has no children but two dogs she loves.
