"It's like rain on your wedding day. It's the free ride and you've already paid. It's the good advice that you just didn't take. Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?" These are lyrics from a popular song titled Ironic. Have you ever stopped to think how ironic life is? Maybe you don't even know what irony is. Irony is defined in Webster's as "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result." Oedipus' life, in Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, is the epitome of irony. Even though the song Ironic was written just a few years ago, I think that the song could have been Oedipus' theme song. I am going to take you on a journey through Oedipus' life and demonstrate how different events in his life correspond symbolically to each scenario of this song. Oedipus ironic marriage is "like rain on your wedding day." His "free ride" was to be a ruler, but he "already paid" by taking another throne. In addition we see many characters throughout the play giving him advice "that [he] just didn't take." However, the most ironic component of the play is how Oedipus, with good eyesight, is blind to the truth and the blind man can "see" everything.

A bride's nightmare is rain on her wedding day. A wedding is suppose to be bright and beautiful not damp and dreary. The same thing is true for a marriage. For Oedipus and Iocaste their marriage started off bright and beautiful but abruptly turned damp and dreary. Oedipus runs away from home because of an oracle that says he would marry his mother. He thinks that staying away from his mother will prevent the oracle from coming true. After solving a riddle and delivering the people of Thebes, Oedipus gets a beautiful bride, Iocaste, as his gift. Life is good for Oedipus and there is no "rain on his wedding day." However when he begins to realize that Iocaste could be his mother and the story unfolds, he is faced with having committed one of the worst sins, marrying his mother. Suddenly there is "rain on his wedding day." It is ironic that the very thing that he left home for was the reason for his demise and the marriage that he cherished so much was considered so indecent. "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

If Oedipus would have stayed in Corinth, he would have been king. It was a "free ride." Polybos, King of Corinth, loved Oedipus so much that Oedipus believed that he truly was his son. If Oedipus would have stayed, he would have been there when Polybos got sick and passed away and then Oedipus would have inherited the throne. However, because of the oracle, Oedipus fled Corinth. Oedipus "paid" much to become a king, which he could have been if he would have stayed. This payment included killing the king of Thebes, ironically his father. Oedipus' royalty could have been a "free ride," but he decided to "pay" for it. "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

Don't you hate it when someone gave you good advice that you just didn't take? Oedipus suffered immensely for not listening to other's advice. For example, Teiresias tries to convince Oedipus to let him go home because it doesn't want to tell Oedipus what he knows. Teiresias tell Oedipus, "No, I will never tell you what I know. Now it is my misery; then, it would be yours." (Scene 1 line 11-11). Teiresias advises Oedipus not to force him to tell what he knows, but that was good advice that Oedipus just doesn't take. Later Iocaste tries to stop Oedipus from digging so deep into the murder of Creon. She says "listen to me, I beg you do not do this thing!"(Scene line 145) Again it was "good advice that he just didn't take." "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

Custom writing service can write essays on SOMETHING

Perhaps the most ironic part of the play is the underlying symbolism of being able to see physically, but blind to the truth verses being blind physically, but able to see everything. This antagonism is seen between Oedipus and Teiresias. Oedipus is blind to the fact that the person he is so passionately looking for is himself. His blindness to the truth causes him to create an unimaginable sentence for the murderer of Creon, which is none other than himself. However, Teiresias who is physically blind is the one person who knows the truth. Teiresias knows that Oedipus is the murderer that Oedipus is looking for. Ironically at the end of the play, when Oedipus realizes the truth, he pokes out his eyes, causing himself to be blind. "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

Irony is something that is encountered everyday. Most of us don't even realize that it is irony. Oedipus primary goal in this play was to save his people and in saving his people, he banished himself. His marriage ended up being rainy, his free ride ended up costing him the throne, and the good advice that he didn't take led to his demise. "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

The Rocking Horse Winner, by D. H. Lawrence is a short story in which money is a symbol of the substitution of love and affection. Lawrence presents an upper class family that is destroyed by greed because they always felt no matter how much money they had, they always needed more. This story is proof that Greed is one of the seven deadly sins.

At the beginning of this story the family did not have enough money to support their opulent lifestyle. D.H. Lawrence illustrates their situation like this â€Although they lived in style they felt always an anxiety in the house. There was never enough money. (p. 406) The family scrambles to pay bills at the end of the month but they keep servants and expensive toys under the tree during Christmas for their three children. An unspoken phrase whispered throughout the house, â€There must be more money! There must be more money! (p. 407) the whispering said. Even though the family had money, they wanted, they needed more.

The obsession of needing more money stems from the mother which has great influence on the whole house, especially her young son, Paul. The character of the other is portrayed negatively, she is not a very loving mother and she had a dysfunctional relationship with her family. She use to think she was lucky until she married her husband. Since her husband didn't have very much money she felt they were unlucky. That is what she told Paul one day when he asked why they didn't have a car of their own. She told him luck was what causes people to have money that she would rather be

lucky that rich. Paul told his mother he was lucky and she paid no attention to him. Her obsession soon became his obsession.

Paul would ride his rocking-horse wildly demanding it to take him to luck. Nobody in the house knew why he rode the horse so furiously but the gardener, Bassett. Paul told Bassett that when he rode his rocking-horse until the end he gets the winning name to the horse races. Paul and the gardener became partners. He picked the horse and Bassett placed the bet. Paul had started out with the five shillings that his uncle Oscar had given him, but his winnings kept adding up. Soon after, Uncle Oscar became partners with Paul and Bassett. When Paul made 10,000 pounds he decided to give his mother 1,000 pounds every year on her birthday for 5 years. Paul didn't want his mother to know he was lucky so his uncle set up the dealing with a lawyer. Paul saw the envelope from the lawyer and asked his mother if she had received anything good in the mail. She said â€Quite moderately nice (p.41) in a cold voice. She liked getting the money, but she wasn't happy, she wanted more.

The same day, she had a meeting with the lawyer who was handling the money. Paul's mother demanded the full sum. Paul agreed, she received the money. The author informs the reader, â€There were certain furnishings, and Paul had a tutor…There were flowers in the winter, and a blossoming of the luxury that Paul's mother had been use to. (p. 414) The money ran out quickly. The voices in the house screamed even more, â€Oh-h-h, there must be more money. Oh, now, now-w! Now-w-w there must be more money-more than ever! (p. 414) The mother had created a vicious cycle. Paul hated that the house was taunting them and his obsession intensified. He rode his horse day and night

searching for the winning horse for the upcoming Derby. He rode himself sick. The winning horse finally came to him, but it was too late. They placed the bet as they always do and he won 80,000 pounds. As Paul lay in his bed looking very frail Bassett told him the news. Paul died. As he lay their breathless all his mother could hear is 80,000 pounds. Right before his death Paul asked his mother if he ever told her he was lucky. Her response was â€No, you never did. (p. 417) But he did tell her that day, if she would have paid attention, would she have stopped him?

People need money to live, and enough to buy the basic goods one need to survive, but everybody wants more money. More money means an easier life. The more money one has, the more money one wants. The family, especially the mother, always wanted more money in the story The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence. The Mother got more money but it was spent quickly and debt haunted the family. In the end the mother received 80,000 pounds but lost her only son. It is a natural thing to wanted money, but the mother took this want to extremes

The Lord the Flies

The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel depicting the depravity of

all human beings. It follows a group of British boys on a journey from

Cheap University Papers on lord of the flies

civilization to savagery and the ultimate fight for survival. It explores

startling questions about human nature through symbolism. The dark side of

human nature is manifest in everyone. Only those who face the truth and are

completely honest with themselves can overcome that darkness.

The darkness is brought about by fear, cruelty, and deceit. Fear is first

introduced to island society by the littluns who speak of a beast from the water

and from the forest. This fear is multiplied and magnified tenfold as everyone

is drawn into this terror of the unknown. Though the older boys know that there

is no beast because they have explored the island and found nothing, they choose

to deceive themselves and succumb to fear, to darkness. Cruelty is the most

physical of the dark traits and even Ralph has an abundance of it. The boys

unite through common cruelty, from the teasing of Piggy to the killing of pigs.

Cruelty exists in moderation in most people and society usually does not allow

it to develop. In these unusual circumstances however, Roger and Jack reach new

heights of violence towards others. The darkness becomes a formidable force on

the island as those who oppose it are subdued or killed, and the truth

concealed.

It is possible to overcome the darkness by seeing the truth and accepting only

complete honesty towards oneself. Simon, after his conversation with the Lord

of the Flies, becomes a bearer of truth. He is the only child who understands

what the beast is. In carrying this knowledge, he is murdered by the masses, by

those who are possessed by the darkness. He is a sacrifice for the cause of

shedding light in the dark because it allows Ralph to find conviction in

himself. This force of cruelty and deceit subconsciously manifests itself in

the children, and they fall victims of the darkness by killing Simon. After

Simon's murder, only Ralph is willing to face the events of that night. Piggy

calls it an accident while Jack tries to explain it away by claiming Simon was

the beast in disguise. Jack, while in self-denial, is also perpetrating an

effective scheme to maintain power over the tribe. An event of this magnitude

had the potential to topple Jack's leadership but instead he turns it to his

advantage, by telling lies. Simon's murder allows Jack to emphasize the danger

of the beast and therefore the necessity to hunt and give offerings to appease

it. Though not having as clear an understanding as Simon, Ralph makes the

sacrifice worthwhile for he, from this point forth, can never be completely

submerged in the darkness.

Piggy's death is further symbolic of the necessity for seeing the world clearly

in order to overcome the darkness. The reason Piggy and Ralph confront the

tribe at the time which leads to Piggy's death is because Jack steals the

glasses in order to make fire. The glasses and their utility represent

civilization and intelligence. Furthermore, though it physically helps Piggy

see clearly, it symbolically is the force behind Ralph's progressive ideas.

Piggy, the advisor behind Ralph's leadership, gives Ralph a broader and clearer

perspective. It is in this manner that Ralph is able to make good decisions for

the people. Piggy is murdered by Roger on a sadistic whim and Piggy's

intelligence embodied by the glasses are perverted to serve the savages. The

tribe uses the glasses to make fire the fire that will soon consume the entire

island in the hunt for Ralph. Though Piggy dies, his influence and his ability

to see the truth continue in Ralph. Completely alone, Ralph is able to draw on

Piggy's insight and hold on to civilization for strength. Ralph, being the only

remaining person on the island who is willing to face the truth, has to be

eliminated. The glasses, though turned from their original purpose of

maintaining civilization, still retain some of its virtue. The fire the tribe

starts to smoke out Ralph using those glasses also serves to save his life; thus

enabling him to survive the darkness of the island society.

The group of little boys on the island is a microcosm of human society. The

appearance of the naval officer at the end of the novel draws a parallel between

the war waged in the adult world and the boys' isolated existence. It shows

that even in "civilized" society, darkness permeates human interactions, be it

between countries or countrymen. Only the truth will prevail over the darkness

of human nature.

The story, Two Kinds, by Amy Tan describes the struggle between a dominate mother who tries to protect her daughter, Ni kan, from the devastating losses that she suffered by convincing her that she might become anyone she wants to be. Ni kan resents her mothers control and wishes only to be herself. The author clearly illustrates in this story that parents can not control their childrens lives; they can only guide them in the right direction and let them make their own decisions.

First of all, Amy Tan shows that Ni kans mother attempted to dominate and control her daughters life. The mother does this by telling Ni kan that . . . you can be prodigy, too (41) and insisting that she work toward this goal. Ni kan is then sent down a path of endless tests and lessons. These include tests on capitals of the states; multiplying numbers in her head; finding the queen of hearts in a deck of cards; trying to stand on her head without using her hands; predicting the daily temperatures in Los Angeles, New York, and London; and looking at a page from the Bible for three minutes and reporting everything that she remembers (4).

Although Ni kan quickly loses interest of her mothers dream of being a prodigy, her mother persists. She arranges for Ni kan to take piano lessons. Her mother does not ask her if she wants to play the piano or to explore another art form. She arranges a complete schedule of lessons and practices that take over not only her daughters physical existence but also dominate Ni kans thoughts for most of her free time. Her mother wants to control not only her actions but also her dreams and aspirations, and she will not tolerate disobedience. She clearly says that Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter (47).

Amy Tan shows that Ni kan resents her mothers decisions and resists her control. After many failed tests in knowledge and skills, Ni kan asserts to herself, I wont let her change me. . . (4). This clearly shows a child resisting parental domination and control. The piano lessons evokes a response of ...I felt like I was being sent to hell (4). With this attitude she responds to this attempt to make her a success by lazily drifting through endless practices and lessons.. She performs the tasks without enthusiasm or interest. She only goes to the lessons at her mothers insistence.

Order Custom Two Kinds paper

Ni kan never appreciates that she has been give an opportunity to to explore music and enrich herself. Ni kans concern with her beautiful dress and the way to give a proper curtsey, rather than the way she plays, show that she does not realize that the purpose of the recital is to demonstrate competence that comes after hard work. Therefore her performance is a failure because she never tried to learn her lessons and she wasnt prepared for the recital.

Ni kans battles with her mother do not end with the recital disaster. Ni kan confides, It was not the only disappointment my mother felt in me (47). She continually disappoints her mother as she grows up because she asserts her own will to be who she wants to be not who her mother wants her to be. She does this even at the price of throwing away the real opportunities her mother gave her.

Eventually, Ni kan and her mother reconcile their differences. This is symbolized when her mother gives Ni kan the piano for her thirtieth birthday. This reconciliation makes Ni kan feel like a tremendous burden has been removed. Her mother still sadly insists that she can play because she has natural talent. All that stands in her way is that she is just not trying (48). Ni kans mother realizes that it was her dream for Ni kan to become a prodigy, but Ni kan had never accepted that dream as her own. The mothers actions show us that she forgives Ni kan for all the failures and is content that Ni kan has become successful in her own way.

The two piano pieces called the Pleading Child and Perfectly Contented parallel Ni kans life. When she was young and controlled by her mothers dreams, Ni kan was a pleading child. She pleaded with her mother to let her find her own dream. When Ni kan becomes older, she is contented because she follows her own dreams.

Parents and children will eternally struggle over control. Amy Tan shows us through this story that parents never can truly control children. Children come to us with their own minds and spirits, and develop their own hopes and dreams that parents can not silence. She also points out that even obedient children who do as they are told still have willful thoughts. In the portrait of Ni kan, we sympathize with these young minds. Ni kan shows us that good children will disappoint their parents over and over; not because theyre bad, but because they can only be who they are, themselves.

Communication has been made so much easier and efficient due to the introduction of ICT in communication.

ICT can be used in so many different ways in communication, the following are explanations and uses of ICT in communication

Internet

The internet is a vital part of communication of any business, The internet is a link between all computer systems across the world using either a dial up modem or a broadband facility, this is very useful in business as it is but in communications it can be used for email which is basically electronic letters which can be delivered using the internet in a matter of seconds, this can be very useful for ford as it can communicate using this method to anywhere in the world and it will take up very little time and effort. Files can also be attached to the email so ford can send anything across the world using email including designs, spreadsheet files (Accounts) images, any thing can be sent any where across the globe. Email although very time efficient is seen as a informal way of communication and might not be as effective if used in formal circumstances, and as you can not see the person that you are writing to you miss out on at least 50% of his or hers response as Body language is a key part of any communication, this is another negative about email. Email can be used for both internal and external communication but if more commonly used for internal for example emails can be sent to all staff informing them of a meeting or a party etc.

Intranet

The intranet is like the internet but it is more local, it is a network between computers in the same area in a Local Area Network or a Wider Area Network, so it is used as a channel of communication inside the bussiness as only they can access it therefore it is an internal channel of communication. The intranet is a very useful form of communication because as it is not connected to the internet it is completely free. The intranet can be used in many different ways, there maybe a message board where employees can air there views on performance or complaints or anything they wish, this way management get an idea of what employees think and employees feel they have an input in the company and are more motivated. The management could also post sales figures or production figures for the employees to see, So the employees can see if they are performing to their targets.

Video Conferencing

Video Conferencing is a very useful part of ICT, this is where you can contact any one using ICT and you can see them and hear them as you are communicating with them. This can be a very time efficient way of communicating within the business because you can contact any one in the world ad see them face to face and ad body language is a vital part of any communication video conferencing can prove to be a very effective way of communicating. Video conferencing also can save a lot of money in travel for example if a ford director has to meet with a supplier in another country he does not have to travel he can just communicate using video conferencing saving both his time and money.

Ford have realised how important ICT is to the company and the way it communcates so it has invested in a computers for every employee of the company so they can become comuter ilterate, they have also invested time and money in Microsoft's Net Meeting software for Video Conferencing (Article's In Appendix)

There are other ways ford use technology to communicate for example there are electronic information board on the production sites informing employees of targets and units made and any other information that needs to be communicated. There are also TV results which show targets for the month and cascade objectives of the month or show if previous months objectives were met, this can help the employees feel more motivated for the business.

The Communication of the company can be measured by the production sales of the company or the sales figures of the company or for example if there has been a mis communication in the company which has resulted in a loss for the company. For example when in 17 the tyres of ford cars were recalled because they were faulty this is an indication there their was a miscommunication in the ford Production process (Article in Appendix)

.There are also sales figures, which show that in 00 the results of the company in terms of production rose rapidly (Article in Appendix) this can be an indication that the communication had improved in that year compared to the previous year.

A good foundation and channels of communications need to be formed if communication is to be improved in the company.

Informative Speech

I.

According to a DMV crash report in year 000, automobile crashes are the number one killer of Americans from age 15 to 0 years old. On an average, approximately 1 people will die today in the United States. Every twelve months, 48,000 people will die. All of those people will lose their lives because of automobile crashes. Great responsibility comes along with a license. Anyone in this room that is a teenage driver is a statistic. Sixteen to twenty year olds have the highest crash rate of any other age group. About 1,00 children die each year in car accidents. More than 70% of sixteen year olds that are killed in car accidents each year, are in a vehicle driven by someone younger than the age of twenty-one. Sixteen year olds have a crash rate times as high as seventeen year olds, and 5 times as high as eighteen year olds. The one age and gender group that will most likely be involved in automobile crashes more than anyone else is young males. To better understand all of this, you must first understand all of the teen driving problems.

II. The number one problem with all young drivers is the lack of experience.

Order Custom Essay on teen driving

A. Technical ability is one of the problems with inexperience. Young drivers have a difficulty in braking, steering, and adjusting vehicle speed.

i. Teens have a higher rate of crashes when excessive speed is a factor.

ii. The seat belt is another technicality in a car that only 45% of teens wear.

B. According to the traffic Injury Research Foundation, or TIRF, report concluded that teenage drivers have a hard time detecting and responding to hazards quickly. In addition, young drivers have difficulty judging personal risks and making appropriate decisions in critical situations.

III. Distraction is also a major cause of car accidents in young drivers.

A. Teenage fatal car crashes are more likely to occur when other teens are in the car. The risk increases with every additional passenger.

B. Another thing that ties in with distraction is risk-taking and immaturity. These factors challenge the driver and his or her ability to perform all of the skills needed for driving.

i. Adolescent impulsiveness is a natural

behavior in teens, but results in poor driving judgment. Peer pressure often encourages risk taking.

ii. High risk behavior such as speeding, inattention, and not

wearing a seat belt also contribute to immaturity.

IV. The use of alcohol is also one of the primary causes of teenage automobile crashes.

A. According to a traffic safety report, teenagers are inexperienced at drinking and driving, so small amounts of alcohol can have tragic effects. More than 0% of all fatally injured teenage drivers have a blood alcohol level of .10 %, the legal limit in most states.

B. Between 185 and 15, more than 40% of teenage deaths occur in alcohol related crashes. Today, 4 states have a .10% BAC level, the leanest in the world.

V.

In light of this information that I have shared with you, one thing is certain, the 15 to 0 year old age group are statistically the worst drivers on the road. Teen drivers are different from other drivers, and their crash experience is different. A high proportion of teenagers are responsible for their fatal crashes because of their own driving errors. A large percentage of fatal crashes involving teenage drivers are single

vehicle crashes. In this type of fatal crash, the vehicle usually leaves the road and hits a roadside object. A larger proportion of teenage fatal crashes involve speeding, or going too fast for road conditions. There are common factors that explain why these things happen. For instance, more fatal teen crashes occur when passengers in the car are other teenagers. Two out of three teens that die as passengers are in vehicles driven by other teenagers. These factors relate to distraction and immaturity of teens. There are also specific time periods when teenagers are involved in crashes. For example, young drivers are most likely to be killed or injured during the summer months, and a number of those deaths and injuries occur on the weekend. About half of the deaths, and 64% of the injuries occur at night. Of course one of the most common cases of fatal teen crashes is the use of alcohol. While young drivers are the least likely of any age group to drink and drive, the ones who do are at very high risk. Of the teenage drivers who were killed in 1, 40% had been drinking. Overall, young drivers tend to have more crashes due to a combination of life style choices and inexperience. The number of teenage crashes has gone down in the past two years, but until it disappears completely, SAFE DRIVING EVERYONE!

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

Writing can be an expression of one's innermost feelings and a great way to release emotions from one's heart and soul. A sonnet, a fourteen-lined poem and a formal arrangement of rhymes, gives an author a way of self expression. Elizabeth Moulton Barrett Browning's Sonnet 4 from "Sonnets from the Portuguese" is a great example of how a poet releases emotions through writing. Even though love cannot be measured in numbers, Elizabeth uses this sonnet to try to express the depth of her love for Robert Browning. Romance is one of the most popular themes of poetry. Love can inspire the most soulful and sorrowful of words because of the intensity of the emotion.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Sonnets from the Portuguese" first appeared in an 1850 collection. The title came from her husband's pet name for her, "Portuguese." "Sonnets from the Portuguese" describe the intense emotions Elizabeth has for Robert, even though she feels somewhat undeserving of his love. Elizabeth had to keep her feelings to herself for so many years and this poetry allowed her some release. Sonnet 4 of the "Sonnets from the Portuguese" is one of Elizabeths most famous poems. Elizabeth finds it difficult to put one kind of measurement or barrier on how much she loves Robert. It is a never ending, infinite love. This love contains every emotion imaginable and grows constantly, even beyond her time here on Earth.

Sonnet 4 is written in Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet form. The sonnet consists of fourteen lines written in iambic pentameter. The Italian or Petrarchan sonnet is composed of an octave (eight lines) with the rhyme scheme abbaabba, followed by a sestet (six lines) in which the rhyme scheme is cdcdcd. The last six lines can also be cdecde. The octave presents the question "How do I love thee?" and makes a proposition "Let me count the ways." The sestet resolves the tension created by the octave by generalizing, answering or applying the proposition (she will love him after they die).

By use of metaphors, the audience learns that Elizabeth compares her depth of love for Robert to such things as a soldier fighting for freedom. Poetically, Elizabeth says, I love thee freely, as men strive for Right/I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. Her love for Robert is relentless and with great purpose. She believes in true love having no limits, the heart and soul having no restraints, not even death. Elizabeth also alludes to the fact that we must always strive to fight for our love and keep it strong. We must not take love for granted. Elizabeth associates romantic love with common decency and virtues. This is important in her writing because it shows the passion that Elizabeth has in her heart.

Elizabeth lets the reader picture the vastness of her love for Robert through imagery. She uses such words as "life," "death," "sun," and "candlelight" to show her love for Robert. Life and death describe how she will love Robert on earth and after they die. Sun and candlelight are used to make the reader think of how she will love Robert during the day and at night. By using those words, she conveys her love of Robert through imagery.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born on March 6, 1806 in Durham, England. She was the oldest of twelve children of an autocratic father. Elizabeth began writing at a very young age, publishing her first works while in her teens. From an early age, Elizabeth suffered a chronic lung ailment. She spent most of her time in a darkened room writing poetry and many letters. The famous English poet Robert Browning admired her Poems (1844) so much that he wrote to her. They fell in love through their letters and secretly married in 1846, despite her father's objections. Soon after their marriage, they ran away to Florence, Italy, where Elizabeth began a remarkable physical recovery. In 184, they had a son, Robert Wiedeman Barrett Browning. She increasingly took up contemporary issues including the Italian Nationalist cause, the abolition of slavery in the United States, and the position of women in Victorian society. Elizabeth died on June , 1861.
