Response to A Raisin in the Sun, Act II, Scene III

While reading Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, I could see a definite theme of social oppression and injustice. There were underlying, subtle references to slavery throughout the whole play. I think it was really brought into view in Act II, Scene III, when Mr. Lindner comes to call, in a seemingly innocent, welcoming visit, to the new community they were about to move into. He patronizingly speaks to the family, as though they were beneath the understanding of his kind, when he says, "…there's always somebody who is out to take advantage of people who don't always understand."(1404) That would probably be him.

I believe he is implying that, because they are Negroes, and apparently not as bright as he and his fellow whites, they could not possibly comprehend the meaning of all that is going on. He is there to inform them of the rules they have to live by in the white community. He constantly refers to them as "you people", but when he speaks of the neighborhood of whites, he calls them "our people" and "our community". (1404) When he says, "our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities"(1404), I strongly got the feeling that "our" meant, in some way, that he was inadvertently implying ownership of these people, as in slaves, and that they should be kept to living with their own kind; not to mix with their betters. Rather like the slave boss, whose job was to keep them in their place.

Beneatha brings in religion when Mr. Lindner offers the family, "a very generous offer…" for their home. Beneatha says, "Thirty pieces and not a coin less!" (1405) Religion is one of the mediating structures that keep most African-American families together in hard times, and although she seems to denounce it in Act I, I believe she still strongly believes that God is a driving factor in their lives.

Mama also makes a subtle, and rather funny, reference to slavery in Act III, when she tells the moving man that her chair, "ain't no bale of cotton…"(141) Also in this part of the play, she has decided that Walter has become man enough to head the household. In African societies, this had to be proven by rites of passage. In her eyes, he has finally proven himself to be worthy of this honor. He can finally take his place.

Off the record

I must say that I really related to this play, in a big, sympathetic way. I grew up in the South during the 50's and 60's. I came from a family that treated everyone the same; no matter what color their skin or religious beliefs. We were rather odd, I guess. I was totally appalled by the treatment of the black people then. I came from a middle-class family, and I had friends that were "Negroes". My parents didn't care, because they also had friends of every color. I went to many places that "Negroes" were not allowed to be in. It did then, and it does now, disgust me. They were not allowed to look at or speak to me, in public, because I was a young, white girl. They could be hurt because of it. They could not go into the same bathroom or drink from the same fountain. They could not attend my schools. I have seen crosses burned in friend's yards and bricks thrown through their windows. I was young and didn't understand that there is supposed to be a difference. Thank goodness, I still don't see it.

I also think that Beneatha is a terrible name for anyone, especially for a black girl. To me, it implies that she is not above anything or anyone.

Life Insurance

In the ever evolving business world there are many choices for a consumer to choose from when it comes time to consider future plans. When it comes to life insurance a customer has an abundance of plans one can select that best suits their needs and families needs. Has one grows older the choices out there seem to diminish as does the time to for decision making. It is important to address these situation early and life and have a plan for the future, whether it before saving for retirement or taking a plan out for an untimely death, it is vital to know ones options and be as best prepared as one can be.

With the ever growing expense to bury someone nowadays it is important to be prepared to lessen the burden on family members that have to not only morn ones death, but in some cases pay and arm and a leg to get one six feet under. Selling life insurance to someone today and can be very hard to decide what type a policies can fit ones needs and wants. In making a educated decision on buying a policy it is important to consider ones status in life and obligations that one might have.

When I started to research on life insurance policies I noticed that I am at a premium for companies and they are more than willing to work with me setting up a policy. I first looked into types of insurance that I would need and noticed I had an over whelming number to choose from. I looked into three different types term, whole life, and group insurance.

Cheap University Papers on Insurance Planning

I first looked at term insurance, which basically put covers one for a certain period of time. I had many choices when it came to term insurance. I could get one with a renewable that gave me an option after the term came up. I had one that could give me the same premium for a certain amount of years that appealed to me. Also, I found a policy called a conversion policies that would allow me to convert to whole life insurance with a higher premium, it would be good since I can't afford the higher premium at this point in my life.

At looking at whole life insurance I noticed that I couldn't really find a policy that could fit my current situation. I had many to choose from, but since I don't really know what kind of situation I will be in 5 years it was not to my benefit to take a plan until my future was a little more stable. I did notice it is important to start early if I wanted to take out a whole life policy, since the payments would be lower and I could receive a better premium.

The third type of life insurance I looked into was group life insurance, which can be best put as an insurance that one can get through a company they work for. The problem with this insurance is sometime the one can get a better premium with an outside agency and these plans are not as flexible as other term or whole life plans. These plans are best for certain person who is limited in what they can do and or are not able to financially make a decision at the time.

Ad it came time to decide on a plan that best suited me I brought into consideration my needs. Since, I am a full time student that still lives at home, with two working parents that both have insurance policies that still cover me till I am 5. I also, have no dependents of my own, I think it was best for me to not take a plan out at this time. But upon graduation in years it would be to my greatest benefit to begin my own insurance policy and at that time I would begin an adjustable whole life plan that can increase or decrease my coverage as my life and outcome changes.

The Museum of Science and Industry covers seven acres and occupies a number of historic buildings, it is situated in the oldest passenger railway buildings in the world, and the Museum tells the story of the history, science and industry of Manchester. There are lots of exhibitions to see which are both the good and bad points of the museum it is several museums in one and no visitor has a hope of taking it all in on one afternoon visit. Exhibitions cover steam engines, space, cotton, gas, water, electricity, computers, photography and the history of Manchester.

The most recent exhibition added to the museum is the Xperiment area. This is an interactive science gallery where you can get hands on with the exhibits, such as hoisting a car off the ground or look at the parts of a giant eyeball. Without doubt this is probably the best part of the museum, even if the interactive bits are looking a bit worn and tatty. It is obviously aimed to keep children entertained but as I don't really enjoy museums it gives you something to do.

Across the road from the Xperiment area is the Air and Space Exhibition. Inside there are a large number of aircraft on display. It highlights how Manchester was involved in the history of aviation. The aircraft are impressive but who hasn't seen a plane before, a plane is a plane, they fly around a bit and that's about it. The simulator that they have there is reasonable but not the rollercoaster ride I was hoping for but museums aren't really the place to go if you want an adrenaline rush. There is also an exhibition devoted to space exploration, personally I am quite interested in space but this exhibit was lacking and for something as important as space exploration the exhibit could have been a lot superior.

At the lower end of the site there are the Underground Manchester and Making of Manchester exhibitions. Underground Manchester takes the visitor into a history of sanitation and health. The Making of Manchester follows the development of the city which is thorough but lacks excitement and gets mind-numbing after a while. The biggest negative of the museum, as stated above, is the sheer size of it, it's far too much to cover in one day unless you're really into your science and industry. Some of the exhibits are not worth looking at so either the museum should scrap them or make them a lot smaller so not so much time is wasted on them. This would allow people to appreciate the superior parts of the museum in far greater detail and make it a much more satisfying visit. There are some positives to this museum; the main one is Xperiment area with all the interactive exhibits which not only can teach people about certain issues but makes it that little bit more attention-grabbing. Some areas of the museum are good but could be made better, especially the space exploration exhibit. In other museums, especially down in London, exhibits based around Space attract a lot of interest and can normally be the focal point of the museum but this one didn't compare to what is available elsewhere. I am convinced that if this was improved on with interactive features and a greater feel of being in Space then the museum would get a lot more business.

For a person who doesn't really enjoy museums this was no different, although some of the buildings were quite pleasing to look at it still made me bored to tears and the amount of walking was just infuriating.

The challenge of running a competitive campaign for the U.S. presidency is made easier by the existence of the political parties and other organizations. In United States there are two major parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, that compete against each other. It is often criticized that both parties are too similar and it makes no difference who's is power. Although both parties have most in common but there are indeed large philosophical differences.

"Many observers note that in recent years the Republican party has become increasingly conservative. Although there is a range of opinion within the party, Republicans generally advocate a limited role for the federal government in solving society's ills." (The League of Women Voters, 1). Republicans also support cuts in the domestic programs from social welfare to environmental protection, lower taxes and increases in spending for defense.

The Democrats are identified as the more progressive party. This is mainly due to a Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs. These programs were designed to alleviate problems caused by the Great Depression. "Republicans are far more likely to say the moral climate of the country has declined, while Democrats have far more faith in the federal government's ability to solve problems. Many more Republicans see the government as a threat to their rights. And unlike Republicans, Democrats want more regulation of guns." (Adams, web).

Democrats believe in issues like pro-choice while Republicans believe in pro-life. Democrats usually support the lower or middle class people and the Republicans tend to support the higher class. Republicans also support welfare reform and believe the things you do, you are responsible for those actions. While being a Democrat means to stand up for anyone and everyone. "Nevertheless, the differences between the parties in how much the government should be involved has real policy consequences. Democrats do trust the government more than Republicans." (Adams, web).

Do my essay on Difference between Damocrats and Republicans CHEAP !

The criticism that two parties are alike is not based so much on what they believe, but on the way they act. There are some areas, like the campaign finance, where the parties look the same. Otherwise they are quite different and have different programs to help the people of United States. "Republicans have more confidence in religious institutions, the military and large corporations than Democrats do. And Republicans are more likely to say there's too much government regulation than Democrats." (Adams, web).

However, both parties work for the betterment of United States and its people. They want their country to flourish and remain as a supper power for the whole world. They work hard to maintain its integrity and self-esteem and also to take care of the people and fulfill their needs to the best possible extent. Therefore, it doesn't matter who is in charge as long as they keep caring for the country, people and their needs.

"Im one of the few totally honest people I know. Nick Carraway says this early in the novel in order to establish himself as a dependable character. It also comes to light that he is the only character who has maintained most of his morals throughout the book. He reserves his judgements and does not express them vocally, but rather to the reader in his thoughts.

Nick, throughout the novel separates himself from the rest of the characters. He is involved in all the controversy first hand, but manages to take outsiders view on things. For example, he does not think it right that Jordan Baker, the woman golfer, should cheat in a golf game, but on the other hand he does remember that it was only an accusation. When Nick finds out about how Gatsby makes his money overlooks he dishonest business dealings, with certain relationships and with organized crime. Gradually through the novel Nick looses his innocence, and in turn his morals. It can also be said that throughout the book that some his facts may be distorted or even lies. For example, one day Tom drags him along to Myrtles apartment in New York. While he is there, he gets drunk, so this is a prime area for twisting of facts. Another example is when Daisy runs into Myrtle in Gatsbys car. Lots of what we hear is gossip and from the recycled facts from bystanders.

Nick's western roots do, however become questionable as the novel progresses. For instance when Tom is having an affair he says nothing to Tom about how it's sinful and wrong. Instead, Nick goes along with Tom and waits while Tom is in the bedroom with Myrtle. He speaks of the immorality of it, however he never says anything. Another example is when Gatsby is trying to court Daisy. Nick introduces them knowing full well how Gatsby feels about her. However, Nick fails to remember that Daisy is someone's wife and that she is bound to Tom threw their vows.

An aspect of Nick's character that also perplexes the reader is Nick's level of friendship, trust and tolerance to Gatsby that he offers no one else. At the end Nick is quick to dismiss Tom and Daisy. Nonetheless, no matter what Gatsby does Nick finds a way to rationalize his actions for the better. This influences the reader because we grow to empathize with Gatsby. He seems to have worked hard for the love of Daisy. Whether it be because we know she would never love him as a person or because we feel sorry for him and the life that he has degraded himself to. To her, he is still that poor boy from many years ago and in her head she is still thinking, "Rich people don't marry poor people."

Nick Carraway, the novels narrator, may not have always had the most impartial opinions or the views on certain topics but he was continually loyal. Not loyalty in reference to his relationships with the other characters, but in being loyal to himself. He did not get involved with the corrupt ways of the others and he did not loose all his morals and ethics. However, when he realized how they had declined he made the decision to move back home, to the West, where he could regain all that he had lost. "Thats my Middle West … the street lamps and sleigh bells in the frosty dark…. I see now that this has been a story of the West, after allTom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life."

Thematic Essay Civil Rights

Africans Americans are only one out of the many racial groups in America that faced

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Civil Rights

rejection and discrimination. As time gradually progresses through the age of slavery and into a

new modern era of rights and freedom, African Americans have fought to achieve their own

equal rights in the midst of racism and conflict. An example of a right that was denied to them by

society and the government was the denial of segregation. They wanted to have the right to attend

equal facilities, schools, and many other needs. Through peaceful and violent protest,

perserverance, amd effective leadership, African American individuals and groups fought every

way they could to gain these rights.

Throughout American history and recently in the 0th century, blacks were segregated

from the whites and were denied equal facilities. They took a numerous amount of actions and

protests. One, and by far one of the most famous, was when Rosa Parks went against the law that

made it illegal for blacks to sit on the white section of a bus. This eventually stimulated the rise

of the Montgomery bus boycott, in which all African Americans decided to boycott riding buses

in protesting their objection to the law. Another example of the blacks taking action were the

Freedom Riders. In this case, blacks from around the country joined to protest their rights by

riding on buses all over the South. In another case, probably the most prominent example, is the

strong leadership of the blacks, lead by Martin Luther King Jr. He helped influence and stood as

a figure for blacks who were in need of a way to express their freedom. He led marches and

protests with his philosophy of civil disobedience. The most famous march is the Salt March on

Washington, where protestors marched 50 miles to the Washington Capital to protest their rights.

In addition, it was where Martin Luther King made his memorable speech at Lincoln Hall where

he made a statement that gave hope for blacks all around the country.

To an extent, African Americans acheived their goals. However, it often also sparked

white opposition. The Montgomery bus boycott did not directly end segregation, but it eventually

influenced the Supreme Court to declare segregation laws on buses illegal. The whites responded

back by saying the blacks themselves had started an illegal boycott, but eventually this claim was

rejected. The Freedom Riders prompted the government to force new lawsuits against

segregation and helped improve the percentage of black voters in the South. However, it also

caused violent riots to erupt, often resulting in people killed and injured. The Salt March in

Washington was strong enough to prompt the Congress to start supporting Kennedys civil rights

bill, but it is not passed until his death in 16. It also awakened other blacks around the country

to start influencing themselves that gaining their rights was important.

African Americans suffered a lot to gain their rights. By the late 160s, and with the

assaisination of Martin Luther King progress was slow and only at its beginning. Now entering

the new millenium, segregation has finally ended and racial discrimination has nearly

diminished. Through their efforts and indomitable spirits, a great tribute is given to those back in

history that lead the blacks civil rights movement into the equal society we are in now today.

Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter is story about Hestor Prynne, a woman who

commits a sin and is filled with many feelings, including pride, surrounding that sin.

Many of those around Hestors sin reflect similar emotions and feelings. Hawthorne

employs many symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne uses the colors red,

Order custom research paper on Colors in The Scarlet Letter

black, and white to represent Hestors emotions and the emotions of those around her.

The most frequently employed color symbol by Hawthorne is red. Red most obviously

represents Hestors sin, as shown by her scarlet A she is forced to wear. Her scarlet

letter, like her sin, is something she must always deal with and is something she can

never escape. Pearl, the product of Hestors sin, is usually dressed in red clothing,

representing the sin. Pearl is also called the names Ruby, Coral, or red Rose, and a

little bird of scarlet plumage, further extending Pearl as a red representation of Hestors

sin. Red is employed by Hawthorne to show passion and sensuality. The sin is also

represented by the letter A being formed in the sky by meteors, and an A appearing

on Reverend Dimmesdales chest. The first encounter with red is the description of a wild

red rosebush growing outside the prison where Hestor was imprisoned. This is

representing Hestors pride and passion, growing in a place not fitting, similar to how

Hestors passion did not fit in with the Puritan society. As the sunlight shines through a

red and yellow window in the governors house, a red light shines throughout the room.

This is symbolizing Hestors passion spreading throughout the Puritan society.

Hawthorne also uses black and darkness as symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter. Black

is used to represent evil and hiding. Hawthorne calls the prison the black flower of

civilized society, meaning it is evil and a place concealing the truth. Frequently

Hawthorne makes references to darkness turning to light, suggesting darkness as a state

of hiding where the person will not accept lifes experiences and holds back. Pearls eyes

are called a small black mirror, meaning they are empty and filled with sin as they

reflect Hestors scarlet letter. Hawthorne explains black weeds growing from a sinners

grave as evil coming out and dying hope. The Puritans describe Satan as the Black Man

in the forest. Black is used to symbolize the worst and most evil part of an object or

person.

Hawthorne employs white and light to oppose darkness as a state of self- containment.

White most clearly symbolizes purity. Pearl, who has not committed any great sins nor

does she hold herself back from anything, is always portrayed with the light shining on

her. When Hestor removes her scarlet letter and faces her sin and pride, the sunlight

shines on her for the first time. The sunshine is used to express a moment of

enlightenment and change.

Hawthorne uses reds, darkness, and light, to express characters emotions and the state of

their spirit. Red is passion and sin. Darkness represents a poor state with self-denial, as

well as representing simply evil. Light symbolizes a state of enlightenment and a

refreshed spirit, as well as purity. The color symbols in The Scarlet Letter help to transfer

certain themes and ideas to the reader, as they are easily recognized and identified.

Hawthornes symbolism shows the simplest events of one person permeating throughout a

society.
