Medea as Woman, Hero and God Four Sources In Euripides play the title role and focus of the play is the foreign witch Medea. Treated differently through the play by different people and at different times, she adapts and changes her character, finally triumphing over her hated husband Jason. She can feasibly be seen as a mortal woman, Aristotles tragic hero figure and even as an exulted goddess. Medeas identity as a weak woman is emphasised at the very start of the play. It is made very clear that she has come to misfortune through no fault of her own and is powerless in her problem (her world has turned to enmity). Being unable to change her situation is an example of her portrayal as a weak woman figure. We are told that she has been crying for days (lies collapsed in agony). Soon after these descriptions of her weeping, the Tutor arrives and informs us that yet more bad news is coming her way (not heard the worst banish them). At this point all the pity is directed towards Medea, shunned by her husband. More than just a cold cunning, Medeas cleverness manifests a sensitivity to other peoples psychological weak points when Creon makes a casual reference to the absolute devotion he feels for his daughter, Medea appeals to him on behalf of her own children and secures the one-day grace period before his decree of banishment takes effect. Unlike other ancient tragedians who used dialogue more abstractly, Euripides places a lot of emphasis on revealing a characters personality through his or her way of maneuvering a conversation. In his characteristically innovative style, Euripides employs the device to suggest that a rise to power by women would similarly unhinge the universe--to contemplate their comeuppance remains as unnatural as a kings murder.

Cindy Sherman was born in New Jersey in the year of 175. She studied in New York at the University college at Buffalo. This is where she began studying painting. She had a keen interest in portraiture from this age. Surprisingly she failed the Photography course, because of technical difficulties. However she later learnt the skills from a different teacher, who was the first person to introduce her to conceptual art. She also took a great interest in altering her appearance to take on the role of various people. She would do this by the use of make-up, clothing and wigs.

She graduated university in 177 and moved to New York with fellow classmate Robert Longo. This is where she began photographing her famous film stills. Most of the images were of Sherman dressing as famous female film stars. She took most of the photographs herself, although some were taken by family and friends.

Sherman never officially gave her images names, therefore it is not clear as to who the portraits are of. This lets the onlooker draw their own conclusions. Summer Book Report

The Outsiders

1. The book that I did my report on is called The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Its was published by the Penguin Group last in 17.

. The main characters in this book were Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, Steve, and the Socs. Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, and Steve were all in a gang that lived on the eastside of their town called the Greasers. The Socs were the rich kids that lived on the West Side of town. Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy were brothers whose mother and father died in a car crash leaving them living together under Darry's supervision. Darry is six foot two and muscular. He does not understand anything unless it is a plain hard fact, but he uses his head. Sodapop always understands everybody and always listens to everybody. Johnny was sixteen years old and had hard black eyes and black hair. Two-Bit is the oldest of the gang and the wisecracker of the bunch. You could not shut him up, he has to get his two bits worth in. Dallas was the wildest of the gang he first got arrested when he was ten. Steve was Sodapops best buddy from grade school. His specialty is fixing cars. Steve and Sodapop both work at a gas station. The Socs are an abbreviation for the socials, which are the rich west-side kids that jump the Greasers.

Custom Essays on Outsiders

. This book was a fictional book.

4. This book was about the rivalry between the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs and the Greasers jumped each other, fought with each other, and had rumbles with each other. One night when Johnny and Ponyboy were walking home from a movie a group of Socs tried to jump them. A Soc grabbed Ponyboys arm and shoved his face in a fountain trying to drown him. The next thing he knew was that he was laying face up in the pavement. "I killed him," said Johnny "I killed that boy." Johnny had killed a Soc named Bob. They were both scared of being caught by the police. They needed help and a plan so the went to Dallas. Dallas told them to hop a train to Windrixville, and to hide in the church on top of Jay Mountain until he got there and to stay out of sight. They stayed there for five days just smoking, reading, and eating bologna sandwiches. When Dallas got there he took them to eat and told them that the police were looking in Texas for them. When Dallas was driving them back to town they saw the church they stayed at on fire and found out that there were kids inside the burning church. Ponyboy and Johnny ran in to get the kids out. They got all of them out, but while Johnny was trying to escape a piece of timber hit his back and he was taken to the hospital. He died in the hospital and Dally is angered by this, and runs off. Later he calls Ponys house to tell him that he robbed a store and is being chased by the cops. They go to meet him, and see him shot down after he pulls a gun on the police.

5. I enjoyed reading The Outsiders because it showed how poor unwanted children survive. It was filled with drama, action, hope, and a little comedy. Although the book is fictional, I believe that people actually have to go through what Greasers do and this book shows how they live. The only problem with this book is that is was not very descriptive.

6. If I were to change the ending of the book I would make it so that Johnny survived. If Johnny had survived then Dallas would not have robbed a store and he would have lived and then Ponyboy and the rest of the Greasers would not be so sad.

There is quite a lot of bias in news articles and it is very effective in stimulating our response to an issue. In the article Rich, famous unite in grief ( West Australian 5 September, 18) bias is included to symathise our response to the victim or victims and to be angry at the people responsible. Reporters can use headlines, Figure of Authority language and the six questions to create a effective slant on an article. All these factors play a huge role in the impact of the bias.

The headline is the first place in an article where the bias first starts. The size of the headline varies on the importance of the article and various poetic tools in a headline give the article a impact and a extremely strong determining point for the bias. The headline Rich, famous unite in grief uses strong words and alliteration and is typed in big, bold, black letters. This and the journalists impacting words make us feel angry at the people responsible for the Swissa disaster.

The way a headline is written and displayed aids in impacting the readers reactions to the article.

A Figure of Authority is used quite often in a article to help convey the bias. All direct quotes from these people are added in with the article to give the reader some proof. As an audience or readers we tend to believe and agree with what these people are saying because they are important and we as readers trust them. In the article Rich, famous unite in grief there is a direct quote from Mr La Motta I had four daughters but only two sons, and I lost them both in just seven months It shows how much pain and loss has happened to one man but then there are many others like him who have lost just as much. This quote makes us feel very sorry for the victims parents and love ones and extremly angry at the people responsible. The quotes in articles influence us to believe things about the people in the article.

Every journalist chooses his/her different style of language to influence the reader in many various ways. Persuasive, descriptive, factual, emotive and poetic are the different language styles used by journalists. Each of theses styles has a different impact on the readers thoughts and responses to an article. In Rich, famous unite in grief an example of this is As grief counsellors helped the families of those killed. This is showing us that the families are helpless and shaterd at the loss of their loved ones. The uses of these writing techniques the journalist is able to create an impacting bias.

As the six questions are mostly factual but they however do contain some bias. They are normally in the introductory paragraph and are very simple the answers to the questions who?, What?, When?, Where?,Why? and How?. In the Rich, famous unite in grief the answers are in the first whew paragraphs which say that no survivors survived the Swissair disaster and that the families are under great grief. This however doesnt have a great impact on the bias but is factual in the article.

Therefore the bias in articles has a great influence on the readers response to the issues in articles. Headline and font, figure of authority and finally the six questions make up the bias in newspaper articles. As each factor plays a different role in impacting the bias. There is definitely a lot of bias in news articles and news just wouldnt be good if it didnt make you feel something for the story.

The three characteristics that I am about to mention are all very important for an epic hero, such as Beowulf or Achilles, who both exhibit the characteristics very well. Courage is a characteristic in Beowulf and Achilles, which all epic heroes must have for them to be classified as heroes. In addition, both of these characters affect the fate of nations, because if they did not, they would not have any significance, and would not have been written about. Finally, both of these characters interact with supernatural beings, who liven up the story, and make it more appealing to the reader.

Both Beowulf and Achilles have great courage and there were many similarities in how they used it, along with some differences. Beowulf and Achilles use their courage to defeat their enemies, as shown with Beowulf against Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, and with Achilles against Hector. All of these instances could have resulted in the hero's death, which is why courage was so important. Beowulf seems to have honor in his courage, such as fighting with no weapons, and leaving Grendel to die by himself, not while being humiliated. On the other hand, Achilles desecrates Hector's body without any honor at all.

Beowulf and Achilles both greatly affected the fate of their nations and changed them forever. Beowulf saves the Danes' kingdom from Grendel, saved his own people from attack, and influenced their lives, thereafter. Achilles helped the Greeks in the Trojan War and his homeland certainly honored him for this. The difference between the two was that Beowulf had a lasting effect on his people and was mourned and remembered for years to come; whereas, Achilles, although he was still remembered by his people, did not seem to foster such love and care from them. However, they both prevented years of turmoil and conflict within their land and abroad, and for that, their ability to affect the fate of nations is very similar.

Beowulf and Achilles both dealt with supernatural beings, although Beowulf dealt with them directly for most of the story; whereas, Achilles dealt with them indirectly, with the exception of his mother, Thetis. Beowulf fought with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, who were all supernatural beings. Apart from his mother, who Achilles conversed with in the story, the Greek gods dealt with Achilles indirectly, such as Athena making Hector stop and fight Achilles. However, Beowulf knew he was dealing with supernatural beings, which he recognized as demons of Hell, and Achilles knew and believed in the various gods, so a similarity between the two was that they both knew they were dealing with supernatural beings.

As I have stated, Beowulf and Achilles are certainly epic heroes because of these characteristics. Although they are similar in many aspects, they also have many differences, which most likely arose because of the different surroundings in which the authors lived. These resulting differences give the epics the ability to entertain the reader in different ways, and they both undoubtedly entertained generations of readers, and may do so for even longer.

Aristotle Quote

Aristotle once said "[w]e cannot learn without pain." I find this statement to be

very true. Without pain, how would we know anything is "real"? Pain is just the

realization that something is real, and something is possible. Pain can be physical or

Help with essay on Aristotle Quote

emotional, depending on the situation. Physical pain is not the only entrance to learning.

Emotional pain is probably more knowledgeable than physical pain itself, because

sometimes it lasts longer, and leaves a deeper impression.

My first example of this is simply a child learning new things through experience.

A parent tells a child not to touch a hot stove, because it will burn. This child does not

know what "burn" is, and is curious to find out. This child sees the stove, and it is

tempting. They reach up and touch it, and a hot, searing pain rushes through them. This is

their first step to learning what a "stove" is, and what "hot" means. Had this child not

touched the stove, they would not know what this "hot" feels like, and they would not

have learned why to not touch a stove while it is burning.

Incorporating my own experience into an example, when I was a young child, no

older than one, I was told not to drink from this bottle with a long straw on it. Although I

do not remember my exact thoughts at the time, I'm assuming that my first thought was

that since this can contained a straw, why could I not drink from it? I went behind our

television and drank some of it, disregarding my parents' warnings, and later on

discovered it was VCR cleaner, which was poisonous. My parents had to take me to the

hospital and get it flushed out of my system, but I learned what "pain" felt like, and that

you do not always drink from things which contain straws.

Another example is of a person's "first love", or "first heartbreak". Although we

do not truly have a heart break, we do feel emotional pain. Without this pain, though, we

might not learn to not give our hearts out so easily. But, "heartbreak" is not always simply

"love", or relationships. It can also occur when someone close to a person passes away.

When my grandmother passed away, I felt this extreme emotional "emptiness", which later

turned into emotional pain. I felt that I had not spent enough time with her, and that I did

not appreciate her enough. This, in turn, made me appreciate the people around me, such

as my parents and other grandparents, more. Thus, I learned a lesson to never disregard

those close relationships you have.

Lastly, the war in Iraq is a large example. George W. Bush saw these Iraqi people

as a threat, which some of them might have been, but he sent troops which killed more

than necessarily. Innocent bystanders were killed, because the United States did not know

if they were dangerous or not, or they merely got in the way. Our army killed with what

seemed little remorse, until it later hit that we had, indeed, killed many innocent people,

while the true "criminals" were still out there, in hiding. Since there was no way to take

this back, one would think this would be a way to learn that sometimes, going into

something without planning it better is not the right idea, but apparently it was not,

because we sent our troops right back out to kill and be killed. I guess that's the real

lesson we're being taught here, "kill or be killed."
