This is one of many historical moments identified with Martin Luther King Jr. during the history of civil rights . He was a prime mover of the Montgomery bus boycott, a key speaker at the March on Washington, and the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Martin Luther King was known as a nonviolent protester and a dominant force in the civil rights movement during the decade of 157 to 168.

King was born in Atlanta on January 15, 1. He was one of three children of Martin Luther King Sr. His father was a pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. His mother was Alberta (William's)King. She was a school teacher. He was born Michael Luther King but was renamed "Martin" when he was six years old.

After King graduated from high school he enrolled in

Morehouse College in Atlanta in 144. King received his bachelor's degree in 148. He then attended Crosier Theological Seminary in Chester, PA. There he won the Placer Award as the outstanding student of the graduating class and the J. Lewis Crozier fellowship. He completed his education with a doctorate in 15.

King was married when he returned to the South to become pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. Here he made his first mark in the civil rights movement by mobilizing the black community during the 8 day boycott of the city's bus lines. True to his belief, he overcame violent harassment including the bombing of his home. The end result was the U.S. Supreme Court declaring bus segregation unconstitutional.

King became a national hero and a civil-rights leader. King gathered black leaders in 157 and formed the organization now known as Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was elected President and soon began helping other communities organize protest against discrimination.

King wrote his first book and returned from India to the United States in 160 and became the co-pastor, with his father, of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Three years later, King's nonviolent tactic were tested in Birmingham, during a protest for fair hiring and desegregation of department store bathrooms. King was arrested, but his voice was not silence. Later that year, King was a key speaker at the historic March on Washington. That speech got him the 164 Nobel Peace Prize. King was involved with many other domestic

issues. He was planning a nonviolent boycotts involving camp-ins to protect the poor.

Unfortunately Martin was shot in the neck, by a rifle bullet on April 4, 168. While standing outside with Jesse Jackson and Ralph Abernathy. His death caused a wave of violence in major cities across the country.

Both diamonds and water are scarce resources. A diamond is composed solely of carbon and its formation takes many billions of years. Exposed to intense heat and pressure hundreds of kilometers below sea level, the magical objects of desire are shaped by a powerful, natural process. Water is a daily necessity to each and every one of us. We need to drink water everyday, shower, washing and basically to survive.

Why are diamonds which have relatively little use to society; so costly, yet water which is fundamental to our way of life, so inexpensive?

Adam Smith (17-170) certainly believed that water is necessary for life (we will perish without it). By contrast, diamonds have little of such utility. They are only useful for adornment. It is possible to do without diamonds entirely yet diamonds cost so much more. Smith's "paradox" as it has come to be known, highlights these two incongruous facts

1. If a product's demand is largely dependant on its usefulness, then we would expect water; being the more useful of the two; to command a higher price.

Cheap Custom Essays on Paradox of value

. Diamonds are more costly.

The scarcity of diamonds will always ensure a high marginal value because an extra pound of diamonds has valuable uses that are not currently being met. Conversely, water is tremendously abundant and thus has a high total value and a low marginal value. A mere extra gallon of water is not particularly important.

For example, we assume that a person consumes units of water but no diamonds. The fourth unit of water would gives her only 10 additional units of utility. However, the first diamond would give her 150 units of utility (the marginal utility of diamonds increases as she consumes more diamonds). Therefore, she would be willing to spend 15 times as much for a 1 carat diamond as for a unit of water.

Conclusion

Consumers clearly get more total utility from water than diamonds. The last liter of water we drink or use in the shower gives us very little marginal utility. However, the last diamond still makes a big difference. People are willing to pay more for extra diamonds than for extra water because diamonds are rare and its value is greater than water. The total utility and marginal utility for diamonds will always increase. William Jevons (185-188) clearly states- "Cost of production determines supply, supply determines final degree of utility, final degree of utility determines value." (Begg, Fischer and Dornbushch, 00, P. 71)

In view of this "paradox", it has been maintained that it is not the usefulness of an object but scarcity that determines its price. Diamonds are expensive because they are rare. Water is inexpensive because it is widely found.

The U.S. and Britain, alarmed by the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, feared the expansion of Soviet power and communism in Western Europe and elsewhere. The Soviets were determined to maintain control of Eastern Europe, in part to safeguard against a possible renewed threat from Germany. The Cold War (the term was first used by B. It was at its peak in 148-5 with the Berlin blockade and airlift, the formation of NATO, the victory of the communists in the Chinese civil war, and the Korean War. Another intense stage occurred in 158-6 with the Cuban missile crisis, which resulted in a weapons buildup by both sides. A period of dtente in the 170s was followed by renewed hostility. Abortion has always been a very controversial issue. This can be due to the fact that people have different beliefs that are emphasized by their own religion and set of moral values. Many people believe that abortion is wrong, but they believe that is it only wrong under certain circumstances. This could be true, but is it more right to kill for a specific reason than to just do it because you made an irresponsible decision? Because of the wide spectrum of religion and various moral beliefs, there will never be a right or wrong answer to abortion. So, the only thing there is to do is take a stand.

In my opinion, to abort a baby that you are carrying as a result of unprotected sex is morally and religiously wrong. You are killing a life that God has created within you (with your assistance of course). Just like God predestined our lives, he has done the same for that unborn child as well. For a woman to interfere with what God has planned is just wrong. If you got pregnant, then it was meant for you to assist in populating the earth. If not you would be sterile, or have other fertility problems. Everything happens for a reason. When women make a decision to have unprotected sex, they should think of the consequences that could follow. So as a result of making a bad decision, it is unfair for her to try to undo history and take the baby back. Having unprotected sex was a decision that she made and when we make decisions, we enjoy the benefits of that decision, but we also have to realize and take on the consequences as human beings. To undo what has already been predestined is to interfere with faith and destiny.

In the argument for abortion, many people argue that the fetus is not a human being or does not have life. From the time a baby is conceived, we recognize it as life. So does it not become life when you decide to kill it? No, it is still a life, but one that you decided to end for whatever reason you may have. Another thing that serves as proof on the religious level is that in the bible in Leviticus Chapter 17 Verse 11, it states that "For the life of the flesh is in the blood," meaning that the blood is what gives one life. Before anyone is born, they are a fetus and the fetus is mainly composed of blood because the other organs have not developed at this early stage. This should satisfy the argument that a fetus is not actually a human life.

There are also other circumstances that should be taken into consideration. For instance, if a woman has been raped, I think she should have a choice to decide what she wants to happen. It is unfair for her to have to have a child that she did not want and was not a result of her decision but an irresponsible action of another human being. She would not be able to give that child the love and support he or she will need throughout their life. So, with that said, this should be the only reason people are allowed to have abortions. Other than that, just take responsibility for your actions and decisions and move on from there. We should not look at is as the end of the world, but the beginning of a new one.

Huckleberry Finn, is it racist or is it anti-racist? The adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a man who goes on lots of adventures with his friend Jim who he has an affinity for who is a black man. In these adventures Huck and Jim get into lots of things like they meet up with ex-cons. The book Huckleberry Finn is a racist book because it uses a lot of racist language and perpetuates stereotypes of African Americans.

Reason number one, In this quotation Huck and Jim talk about how French people talk and Jim gets angry about it. "S'pose a man was to come to you and say Polly-voo-franzy-- what would you think?" "I wouldnt think nuffin; I'd take en bust him over de head, dat is, if he werent white. I wouldnt 'low no nigger to call me dat." This quotation shows that even the black people are racist towards their own race and thats pretty racist if all that they have been taught is that black people are different. My second example is when the are on the ship wreck and they're on the boat. "It warn' the grounding that didnt keep us back but a little. We blowed out a cylinder -head." "Good gracious! anybody hurt?" "No'm. Killed a nigger." This quote shows that the people back then thought that black people weren't even people because when she asked if anybody was hurt they said no, even though that the black person was just killed. My third example is "Miss Watsons nigger, Jim, had a hair-ball as big as your fist, which had been took out of the fourth stomach of an ox, and he used to do magic with it. He said there was a spirit inside of it , and it knowed everything." In this quotation the book is trying to show that the black people are stupid and treated like they are stupid even though they are human beings and they have a brain. What had poor Miss Watson done to you that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word?" In this quote the arduous Aunt Sally is telling Huck that he is making a futile mistake by saying that how is it that you could let a nigger go. My last quote is, when they are talking in the house about how he let Jim go when he ran, Aunt Sally is an eccentric person who always changes her pattern, and Huck is like the advocate to Jim. "What did that poor old woman do to you that you could treat her so mean?" why, she tried to learn you your book, she tried to learn you your manners, she tried to be good to you every way she knowed how. thats what she done." In this quote they're saying the same thing as the last quote. She has been there for Huck, and she's done so much for him.

This book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by mark twain is racist because of the language and the stereotypes that are shown in this novel. This should be taught in school because it shows a path that the future people should not go down or use. I think that this book was a really good book. It taught me and it kept me going on it. I respect what was said because of the time frame but in these days it is good to be read so we dont fall into the racist game and also so we dont pull out the race card.

Journal Entry #1 Week , Question

Question â€Does having personal problems disqualify one from the role of helper?

Depending on one's ability to separate their personal life from their professional life determines their capability of being a good a helper. It is important to have this skill as a helper because it enhances one's ability to take on such a role. Those in need of help, who from this point on will be referred to as â€clients, require that the helper show genuine interest and empathy towards them. If such qualities are apparent in a helper, the more motivated a client will be to seek help from that person. However, if a helper seems preoccupied or uninterested, then the client will most likely feel that they are either being neglected or are not being taken seriously. Personal problems may affect the helper and clients in different ways, most of which, in my opinion, are negative.

Buy cheap social welfare journal entry term paper

For the most part, yes, personal problems may affect the helper in a negative way resulting in many consequences for the clients. For example, personal problems may cause the helper to be less focused and less sincere in attempts to help their clients. The helper might become so preoccupied with their own life problem(s) that the needs of those searching for help will not be met. Things could get worse in that the helper begins to take their problems out on their clients (i.e. projection). This definitely does not help the clients in any positive way. Another way personal problems can lead to one's inability to help a client is by creating biased opinions. For example, what if a client expresses that they are having a problem similar to the one that the helper is experiencing? Because the helper can relate to the problem, their personal views may cause persuasion in the client's decisions, which might not be in the client's best interest.

In my opinion, dealing with personal problems can be very stressful and draining. This in turn, causes one to be burnt out. If a helper is burnt out, then they are practically no help at all to their clients. Perhaps a helper can take advantage of their stress by releasing some tension at social justice rallies. For the most part, though, it is very bad to bring such tension into the workplace.

Everyone has their own personal problems, some being small and others very complex. In any case, the way one deals with their problems affects every aspect of their life and of those around them. It is very important for a helper to prioritize their clients' needs, but it is in the clients' best interest that the helper be healthy physically, mentally and emotionally. If personal problems are affecting one's ability to carry out the role of helper, then it is necessary that they take the time to attend to their own needs before anyone else's. By taking care of themselves, they will be able to take on the role of helper more efficiently.

The Pigman

The Pigman book is about a lonely old man called Mr.Pignati who has an awful

secret. Lorraine and John, two high school sophomores learn his terrible secret. Dealing

with friendship, reluctance to grow up and death. In the novel The Pigman, by Paul Zindel

Buy book The PigManGrades 9-10 term paper

the author communicates the ideas of friendship, reluctance to grow up and death.

through the literary theme.

Friendship is a key element to a healthy relationship and will contribute love and

companionship in ones life. " Lorraine and John apologize for having that party. We had

only invited two people, but those others stopped by, and before you knew it things got

out of hand. I mean, Lorraine and I will pay for everything". This quote makes me think

of friendship when John and Lorraine offer to take the Pigman to the zoo with them.

Then they pay for everything even the peanuts and the train ride to go see Bobo. John and

Lorraine even offered to help clean up but Mr. Pigman turned that offer down. I feel that

Mr. Pigman was still mad at them but John and Lorraine showed that they were sorry in

many ways, I think that is true friendship.

Dealing with tragedy and hardship, adolescence can often lead to lose of innocence

where one can learn to cope with life as they approach adulthood. " Pignati at the door.

He was just standing there looking down at me, and there was no smile on his face".

When John and Lorraine had the party at the Pigman's house when he was sick, it showed

that John and Lorraine had not grown up yet. Mr. Pigman couldn't trust them yet. At

least they offered to help clean up which showed some maturity on their part. I feel that

John and Lorraine are reluctant to grow up because they had that party at the Pigman's

house and I conclude that they are not ready to be left alone.

One's life should not deteriorate because of the death of a love one, instead one's

life should become stronger due to that experience. " I stayed until the ambulance doctor

said that the Pigman was dead." This quote made me think of death because Pigman died

from Bobo's death. I feel that the stress of John and Lorraine's party also contributed to

Pigman's death. The fact that Pigman died right after Bobo's death is really weird. They

must of been friends. I conclude that if John and Lorraine had not had the party it would

of been less stress on Pigman. It is impossible to say whether or not Pigman would of

died or not after Bobo's death.

I conclude that my three topics of friendship, reluctance to grow up and death are

all about choices that John, Lorraine and the Pigman made and how these choices affect

others. John and Lorraine showed their friendship to the Pigman by offering to help clean

up because they had a party at his house. By having the party at Pigman's house without

his permission, John and Lorraine show their immaturity and reluctance to grow up. If

there had been no party or if Bobo had not died then maybe Pigman might not have died.
