The act of fate in Tess of the D'Urbervilles plays a major role in the outcomes of many relationships and lives. The first fate seen in the book is when the D'Urbeyfield's horse is killed, and Tess must work for Mrs. Durberville. The letter that Tess writes to Angel about her past doesn't reach him because of fate. Also all the D'Urbeyfield women screw up their lives because of fatalism.

The first sign of fate in the story happens to Tess. When the family horse, Prince, is killed in the collision, Tess holds herself responsible and feels guilty for the death of the horse. In order to make up for the horses death, she feels she must go to work for Mrs. Durberville. "Why, I danced and laughed only yesterday! To think that I was such a fool." (p. 4) This fate means that she ends up meeting Alec and eventually becoming pregnant from Alec. Tess accepts the fate that arises throughout the book. She doesn't try to fight it, she instead, lets it happen. This means that she could prevent things from happening if she were to not to go along with everything.

Before Tess is about to marry Angel she questions telling him everything about her past, even though her mother instructed her not to. She isn't brave enough to tell Angel, in fear of what he might think. Instead she decides to write him a letter telling him everything. She slips it underneath his door, however it goes underneath the carpet as well. Fate keeps the letter from reaching Angel and him finding out the news about Tess before they get married. This then leads to a blow up in the marriage when Tess finally tells Angel, and to their separation. "Angel, I should not have let it go on to marriage with `ee if I had not know that, after all, there was a last way out of it for you…" (p. 8) This is when Angel blows up at Tess for her past and that she hadn't told him sooner. She decides not to fight against fate and try and keep Angel; she lets whatever might happen do so.

Another example of fatalism in the story is the fate of all the D'urbeyfield women. They all have the same genetic traits about them. Tess's mother was very pretty, like Tess, however she gave it all away by marrying a poor, drunk. Tess is very beautiful, however she screws it up by getting pregnant with Alec. Fate also leads to her break up with Angel, because of her dreaded past. The D'Urbeyfield women seem to be very beautiful, but fate seems to lead them to screw up their lives.

Anthony Trollope (1815-188)

Introduction

One of the best writers of the English novel is Anthony Trollope. He was one of William Thackerays most enthusiastic admirers. Trollopes solid novels about mid-Victorian churchmen and politicians, after being almost forgotten, are once more being widley read and appreciated.

Birth and Education

Cheap Custom Essays on Anthony Trollope

Anthony Trollope was born in Bloomsbury, London in 1815 and lived a very difficult childhood. His family faced constant financial troubles.Anthony was a very large and awkward boy who felt an unhappy outcast among the young aristocrats that he met at school, therefore he kept transferring from one school to another. Attempts at University scholarships were abortive.

Career and Marriage

In the summer of 184 Anthony became an usher in a school at Brussels, then he became a junior clerk in the General Post office, London. He had seven lonely years of dingy poverty in London, making few friends and earning a reputation for insubordination, until his transfer in 1841 to Ireland, as a deputy postal surveyor, put him financially at ease and introduced him to a larger, freer, outdoor life. His awkwardness disappeared; he took up the sport of fox-hunting and married Rose Heseltine, daughter of a bank-manager.

Trollope earned a promotion to a post in Mallow, Ireland. Travels on postal missions to western England, Belfast , Donnybrook near Dublin and to Egypt, Scotland, and the West Indies. Finally he settled at Waltham Cross as surveyor general in the Post Office.

Style

Anthony Trollope treated literature as a trade and wrote by the clock. Rising at 5 0, he would write till 11, before going to work at the post office, at the rate of 1000 words per hour. No author has been more methodical. He worked out schemes, set himself time-schedules, and rigidly adhered to them.

Works

1-In Trollopes first novel, The Macdermots of Ballycloran, he set himself to search for the sources of Irish discontent, this was followed by The Kellys and the OKellys, another political novel.

-His next work was a series of six novels set in the imaginary county of Barset, the first being The Warden, in which he describes clerical life in cathedral towns. Other Barset novels include Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne, a novel depicting the caste system of landed property-holders, Framley Parsonage and The Small House at Allington. The Last Chronicle of Barset, is the last of the Barset novels.

-Trollope then published a second series of novels, the political novels, less witty and humorous but more difficult and complex than the Barset series. The Prime Minister (1876) and The Dukes Children (1880) depicted the inner political workings of the House of Commons, the political clubs, and the social entertainments of the great political hostesses.

4-Trollopes Autobiography is published after his death in 188 along with two novels The Landleaguers and Mr. Scarboroughs Family.

Speeding Ticket

You always get the unexpected. Its extraordinary how bad situations pop out of no where. My situation is a speeding ticket that was close to ending my driving privilege. Stress that I had caused me to rush and speed didn't make me think twice of the consequences that I could be getting close to. But I had to face what was coming towards me.

It all started when I was heading to the movie theatre after picking up my girlfriend. The movie started at 0 and she had to be home by one o'clock. It took us about a solid 50 minutes to get there since she lives far away from everything. So I was thinking there would be no problem at all; we go watch the movie and then go back home from there. While watching the movie, I didn't realize how much time passed by. It was a three-hour movie. While we were walking out of the movie we checked the time and saw that we had only thirty minutes to get to her house on time.

Quickly as possible we got out of the movie theatre and into the car. The only thought running through my mind was that I have to get her home right away. There were no cars on the road, which made me want to accelerate the speed more. I was approaching a hill. After going over car lights appeared from the side of the road. Then blue lights were turned on and I slowed down, praying he wasn't coming for me. I passed a 45 speed limit sign and I didn't notice how fast I was going because all I was thinking is that my girlfriend has to be on time. My heart was beating so fast and I was so nervous I couldn't think right. Order College Papers on daniel beddingfield

The cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket. He explained that I went thirty miles per hour over the speed limit, which he could have taken my driving privilege away for a long time he said, but he didn't. He told me going that fast you could lose your life. He let us go and we were already ten minutes late. The rest of the way to her house we were going exactly with what the speed limit was. After dropping her off and speaking to her parents about what happened I couldn't stop thinking about my parent's reaction after they hear the news.

I waited till the next day to break the bad news to them. My parents told me it would cost me around four hundred dollars to take care of the ticket. That is when I started to panic. That meant I had to work more hours and days. All of this chaos for trying to be on time which wouldn't have cost me anything.

After two weeks it was all over. No more worries, money problems, or drama. I never stopped thinking about everything that could have happened. It's so crucial. We could have been hurt or even killed if I would have gotten in a wreck at the speed I was going. Always think about the situation before you dig a deeper hole than what you already have. One more thing, its always better to be late than sorry.

Where does the impetus for law reform come from

and which bodies could reform the law?

In order for a legal system to succeed it can not be static. As the institutions of society are always changing, the legal procedures and the law itself need to adjust to these changes to maintain the respect and support of the public.

There are many institutions which contribute to law reform such as The Judges, parliament, pressure groups, and public opinion. Time

Can you ever image not worrying about time? I could not. I live off time, everything I do is based on time such as my work and school schedule. I work and study a total of 10 hours. Some other parts of the world dont use time as we do in the United States, such as some parts of Africa. Europeans lifestyles depend neatly on time, unlike countries like Africa. Africans in Africa at most time do not take time seriously. In Africa they dont use time, if something happens its because it was meant to happen. The Europeans and Africans have different sense of time.

In the European worldview, time exists outside man, exists objectively, and has measurable and linear characteristics (16). The European feels himself to be times slave, dependent on it, subject to it (16). Europeans use time daily such as work and school schedule and when we go to the doctors, we have a set time for the appointment.

To exist and function he must observe its ironclad, inviolate laws, its inflexible principles and rules. He must heed deadlines, dates, days, and hours. He moves within the rigors of time and cannot exist outside them. They impose upon him their requirements and quotas. An unresolved conflict exists between man and time, and that always end with mans defeat time annihilates him (16).

Write your Time research paper

We Europeans depend on time. When we tell someone Ill pick you up in a half a hour, or meet you in two hours at Dennys for dinner, we expect them to be there and on time. We base our days on time. We always look at clocks making sure what time it is, just in case we run late.

On the other hand, Africans have a totally different sense of time then Europeans. Africans apprehend time differently (16). For them, it is a much looser concept, more open, elastic, subjective (16). Africans time is more of an easy going attitude, but they are not lazy. It is man who influence time, its shape, course, and rhythm (man acting, of course, with the consent of gods and ancestors) (16). For Africans time is different, they dont depend on time like Europeans. When something happens in Africa its because it was meet to happen. Not because there was a set time for it to happen. Time is even somethings that man can create outright, for time is made manifest through events, and whether an event takes place or not depends, after all, on man alone (16). Africans dont base there days on time. When Africans go to work if they are late, it does not matter as long as they get there work done. Africans work very hard to get there jobs done, but they just dont worry about the exact time as the Europeans.

Time appear as a result of our actions, and vanishes when we neglect to ignore it (17). How do you think the Europeans would react of they had to live like the Africans, I personally would be lost, I base my whole day on time, I wish there was more than 4 hours in a day. The Europeans and Africans have a different sense of time. They both have there own beliefs of time.

The Letter from Birmingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King used reason and feeling to appeal black and white clergymen.

Dr. King used logos, a quality that appeals to a one?s logic or reason, to persuade the clergymen by pointing out that

§ He was in Birmingham, Alabama because he was invited and because injustice was in the city, which needed to be terminated. (pgs. 7-8)

§ In his opinion, there were two types of laws, just and unjust. The unjust laws in Birmingham were the segregation laws because they are ?morally wrong and sinful.? (pgs. 101-10)

§ All of the immoral acts that Hitler carried out were considered legal and these were unjust laws. Supporting the victims of these legal actions were against the law, and these laws were also unjust. (pg. 10)

§ It is unreasonable to reprimand Negroes for the peaceful protests because they apparently lead to violence. This charge is similar to punishing a victim of a robbery because the individual had belongings the

robber wanted. This would accuse the robbed of inviting violence. (pg. 104)

§ The clergymen praised the Birmingham police department for avoiding violence, but in all actuality, they were the ones utilizing violent measures, by treating Blacks mercilessly, while protesting peacefully. (pgs. 10-110)

In addition to logos, Dr. King used pathos, a feature that moves one to pity or sorrow, by stating that

§ Birmingham is the most segregated city in the country and it has one of the highest rate of police brutality and undeserved treatment of Negroes. (pg. 8)

§ When Negro leaders tried to negotiate with city leaders, these leaders broke promises and disregarded the African Americans. These individuals felt that they no choice but to employ direct action.

(pg. )

§ When individuals told the Negroes to hold off on their plans for direct action, they had no idea of the struggle Blacks went through. These individuals, mostly white, would not have said wait if they had seen their mothers and fathers get beaten by the police, or their little sisters and brothers get bitten by dogs, or their grandparents being drowned by powerful hoses. (pgs. 100-101)

§ The church was not in the state that it used to be. The church has rejected its African American members and did not support their efforts to strive for equal rights. The church was a supporter of the status quo, and not an advocate for change or justice. (pgs. 107-10)

§ Some of the ministers, black and white, who assisted with the struggle for justice ended up in jail, kicked out of their churches and lost the support of their religious community, including the clergy leaders.

(pg. 10)

Dr. King used logos and pathos in response to the clergymen?s letter that addressed the protests of African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama.

Susan was arrested and indicted on Thanksgiving Day, 187, for having knowingly voted without having a lawful right to vote. At her trial, the judge penned his decision before hearing the case and discharged the jury because he maintained that there were no questions for him to consider. He found her guilty for voting illegally and fined her $100.

All in all, Susan B. Anthony was a great woman. She was a womens rights campaigner, a suffragist, and was against slavery. She even at one time had her own newspaper! She did many important things, but one of the greatest was to help grant women suffrage. Because of women like Susan, women now have the right to vote! The Susan B. Anthony House was the home of the legendary American civil rights leader during the most politically active period of her life, and the site of her famous arrest for voting in 187. Susan B. Anthonys story of courage and determination has been told and re-told to visitors to her Rochester, New York home on Madison Street for more than fifty years.

Because of Aunt Susans love for women and perseverance in her cause, I have today the enjoyment of a great many more rights and privileges than my

mother had twenty-five years ago. And seventy years ago-when Aunt Susan herself was young, there were no such things as womans rights; all the rights were

before the law, or no way in which she might suggest a remedy for it. It was an unheard of thing for A woman to speak in public. None of the colleges or universities

admitted women students. She was barred from nearly all profitable employments, and in those she was permitted to follow she received only one-fourth the mans

remuneration for the same work; she could not become a doctor or lawyer, or, - except within the Society of Friends, - a minister. If she was married any wages she

punish her. The laws of divorce were so framed as to be wholly regardless of the happiness of women, in every case the man always gaining the control of the

them, thereby taking them from the mothers control. Man endeavored in every way possible to destroy womans confidence in her powers, to lessen her self-respect
