Things Fall Apart

The novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a tragedy. Every tragic novel has its own tragic hero. The average tragic hero is important, flawed and a king in this case a great leader. The character Okonkwo is the tragic hero in this novel. He is very important for the people in Umuofia because he's the head of their clan and he makes decisions that change his life in good ways and bad.

Okonkwo is a hero because he's hard working and courageous. For example, when he gets exiled from his clan and has been transferred to Mbanta he asks Uchendu's sons for some seeds to plant the man crop, yams. Okonkwo knew that even though he wasn't the leader of the clan he had to give his all to make it in Mbanta. In addition, when he follows Ikemefuna and the men, just to be with Ikemefuna to assure Ikemefuna that there wasn't anything to be afraid of when he was killed. Though Ikemefuna was then killed by Okonkwo, Okonkwo is considered courageous. Killing somebody so close to you, almost like family, you'd have to be very strong to of done something like that. Although Okonkwo behaves like a hero, he has a flaw which destroys him in the end.

Okonkwo has a flaw which ultimately destroys his pride. For example, at a meeting of the tribes elders, he calls another man a woman and says, This meeting is for men. Okonkwo feels that this man has no titles or anything to show for himself, and so Okonkwo felt that he was not worthy enough. However, Okonkwo then apologize to him. His own success as a great man and leader makes him impatient of others who aren't as successful as he has become. He had to understand that not all men thought that being successful was to be strong, or the leader of a clan some might of thought that their children or crop raising was their success. Okonkwo did many things to prove himself, of coarse some of those things were barbaric but he has truly proved that he's a hero.
