Lady Macbeth is responsible for the death of Duncan. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

I agree that Lady Macbeth is partly responsible for the death of Duncan. However, I do also believe that she alone was not the only person to conspire and commit this sinful act. There were other characters that I think proposed and carried out the actions that led to the murder of King Duncan.

After returning victorious from the battle with the rebel Macdonwald, Macbeth and Banquo come across the three weird sisters (witches). They are curious about the sisters and ask of them what they are; the response they get is unexpected and dubious.

"All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!

All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter."

Macbeth is sceptical of these words and dismisses them. However, when they meet Rosse and Angus they are shocked to hear that Macbeth has been made Thane of Cawdor, this startles Macbeth. He reacts by saying,

"Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor/The greatest is behind"

This means that he is now both Thane of Glamis and Cawdor, and the greatest thing is yet to come. (Become King) This is the first sign in the play that Macbeth believes what the witches have said, and that he now does want to be King. This thought disturbs him greatly, and therefore he resolves to leave matters to chance. I.e. not conspire to do any thing to harm Duncan but know that he will become king soon.

This idea is shattered when Duncan announces to Macbeth and others that Malcolm will in fact succeed him to the throne. Knowing that this is an obstacle, Macbeth plots how to overcome this unwelcome news. Macbeth then writes and sends a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, in which he explains the witches' prophecies. On reading this she now shows her true colours to the audience.

"Come, you spirits/ That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here"

In that she is malicious and tactical. Immediately she concludes that killing Duncan is the option to be taken, especially as she learns that he will be staying in their castle that very night. She plans to do everything in her power to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan. This is a key part in the events that led to the murder of Macbeth and already Lady Macbeth is affecting the goings on with her sadistic plan.

Macbeth reflects apprehension towards the plan about killing Duncan, but is reassured that he is only to act trustworthy and not out of character towards Banquo or Duncan during the banquet, as to conceal their plan. However, Macbeth still expresses doubts about murdering Duncan and fights his conscience. He fears his judgement in the afterlife and decides to call off the plan. Even so when Lady Macbeth goes to fetch Macbeth back into the banquet and he tells her that he is not going to continue, she uses a clever tactic to change her husbands wavering mind. She accuses him of being a "coward", and then declares that she would rather kill her own baby that go back on an oath, which Macbeth has technically made. She the reassures him saying that they can blame the bodyguards for the Kings death by drugging them, and then by planting the daggers on them. This again is another important stage in the series of events, because if Lady Macbeth was not there then I am almost certain that Macbeth would have backed out.

When Duncan finally retires to his chambers for the night, Macbeth is very tentative as he is listening out for the sign to enter, (which is the bell ringing). After learning that Lady Macbeth was in the same room as Duncan and said,

"My father as he slept, I had done' t My husband"

This means that if he did not resemble her father so much she would have done the deed instead of Macbeth. Which shows that she had, at least once, some respect for others and some kind of conscience. Also the fact that she needed drink to carry out her part of the equation shows she is not all hardened to the core.

After Macbeth has killed Duncan he is a wreck and crumbles under this guilt and shame. Lady Macbeth however, has a calm head and tries to pull Macbeth together,

"A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight"

She tells him not to think about it and clears up after Macbeth by planting the daggers which he forgot to leave behind. This shows she is hard and headstrong whereas Macbeth is frightened. Finally, after returning she makes Macbeth retire to their chambers to not be caught and so that there is no eye-witnesses.

In conclusion I feel Lady Macbeth was vital in keeping the plan going by persuading Macbeth on two occasions to bare it, and in covering up and making the murder at least at the start seem good enough to get away with it. She did not kill Duncan though, and she would not, I think, have conspired to this plot if she had not heard that the three witches had prophesied it first. This leads me to believe that she has an affinity with evil and is a believer in witches and their satanic dealings.

Whitman then uses more imagery of jobs in the city to note that war is taking over all aspects of the common people's lives. "Would the talkers be talking? Would a singer attempt to sing? / Would the lawyer rise in court to state his case before the judge?" (1) (1) He is simply asking would these people be willing to continue with their lives even though they have these feelings and emotions that have corrupted their lives. At the end of the second stanza Whitman refers back to the drums and bugles getting louder and heavier. "Then rattle quicker, heavier drums-you bugles wilder blow."

In the last stanza Whitman uses sarcasm in lines 16-1. He tries to express that the war has no desire to stop and will progress until it decides to stop. In the series of short stories read this semester, there are common themes found among many of them. However, the most prominent theme that stands out is that of marital relations and their imperfections. The following two stories discussed illustrate how ambiguous marital relations can be, and how many feel that the key to happiness is marriage and a family. Her family was poor and her father a drunkard, which was the complete opposite of his, so their relationship was forbidden and condemned to secret meetings. Her mother went on to tell her that she had a stillborn child with him, which caused her family to despise her once they found out. Threatening suicide, she wrote to an aunt in America to hastily arrange her a marriage so she could leave. The marriage set up so quickly was to Rosie's father.

How It All Began

I was born in the small town of Aliquippa, Pa on September 7, 184. My father had a serious anger problem that seemed to be constant on his side of the family and genetic I guess, because my family says I'm ten times worse when I'm angry. My supposed "anger problem" was never really apparent to me though. After my fourth birthday, my father and I began taking anger management classes. I don't really recall going, but apparently we both needed a lot of help. We attended classes constantly, twice a week for the next two years. The psychologist recommended that my parents find me some extra curricular activities to get into. They wanted me to long to get along with others, in a sense, become more sociable. That did not sit well with me at all, I was the only child and I learned to get along by myself so I was comfortable only when I was by myself. In the fall of 11, I was at the impressionable age of six, I found myself sitting in front of a television screen every Sunday after church, mesmerized. I loved the way the players moved with such gracefulness and ran around hitting each other with reckless abandonment. Finally, I had found the one activity that would suppress my need for a constant positive activity Football. I began to play pick-up football with the other kids around my neighborhood. At the beginning I was always the last person picked, I guess because of my size (4'5 86 lbs). It was as if they took me for a joke, but deep inside I knew something they didn't, I had heart. I was brought up with the mindset that if you didn't have heart, you have nothing. Before long I was hitting people twice my size and my confidence level went sky high. It didn't take long before I began to be one of the first picked for teams. This was destiny, and I knew it.

I could not wait for the day the local recreation would start posting flyers about the up coming football season tryouts. Finally, on the second day of September, the flyers began to appear everywhere over the town. I grabbed the first one I seen and I sprinted home. When I arrived, my mother was outside watering her flowers. Tired and gasping for air, I tried to get a sentence out but all that came out was fragments of words. Desperate to get my message across, I just gave her the flyer. Overjoyed, I grabbed the flyer back and ran into the house to call the number. I called the number for my weight class and spoke with the coach. He gave me the tryout information along with the status of the team. I was extremely excited about starting. I did everything to prepare for the league. I got a physical, filled out medical forms, and even attended the parents meetings. I was willing to do anything.

Before I knew it the day of tryouts arrived. My mother and father took me to the park to meet my coach for the first time face to face. His name was Coach Hill. He took me and introduced me to the rest of the team and got me fitted for my equipment. A little later, he gathered the parents and the players to give us an overview of the tryouts. For some reason I couldn't really concentrate on what he was saying with the smell of football in the air. All of what he was saying was minute in comparison to what I wanted to do at that time. I was overcome with joy because of my accomplishments, for I knew that this was the beginning to something way bigger than what I could ever imagined.

"Might I but moor Tonight in thee", when moor, to tie or anchor (Webster's 167), is used along with the previous phrase it implies a desire to join in the way of lovers. She seems to long to be with thee in a passionate setting.

What is interesting about this poem is that it could so easily have made a comparison to someone waiting for a ship to finally come home, bringing a loved one who has been off to sea.
