I chose the song “Nice to Know You” by the group “Incubus.” Brandon Boyd the lead of singer of the group has been known to write songs about his past girlfriends to say goodbye to them or talk about how good it used to be. In this song he is talking about how good he feels now that he has broken up with his current girlfriend. As he says in the chorus of the song “Goodbye, nice to know you” which means they ended on a bad note and he is ready to move on. Incubus uses some literary term in this song and they are imagery, metaphor, and rhyme scheme.

This song starts off with some imagery by saying “Better than watching Geller bending silver spoons” and “Better than witnessing newborn nebulas in bloom.” (Line 1-) Brandon starts the song off with how his day is going as he had broke up with his girlfriend the day before. The next two lines give a sense that his girl had cheated on him and that is why he broke up with her. The evidence of this is “Perspective pries your once weighty eyes and gives you wings” (4). This line seems that he did not notice until he opened his eyes and saw that his girl was cheating on him.

The chorus comes up next and Brandon says goodbye to his girl by talking about how great he feels with her gone. Brandon also screams the chorus as if he is really talking to his ex-girlfriend. By changing his tone it, you can really relate to him if you have ever had someone cheat on you in a relationship, and it does not feel to good so that is why he is screaming the chorus. There is also some repetition in the chorus he repeats the chorus fours time to get the point to across to his ex-girlfriend.

In lines 5-6 he is talking about how bad it hurt when he found out his girl had been cheating on him. He says “Deeper than the deepest Cousteau would ever go” (5) in which he is talking about how deeply hurt he was by her wrong doing. In line 8 there is a simile when Brandon says “To obtain a birds eye is to turn a blizzard to a breeze” he is talking about how it was hard to watch his ex girl’s every move to see that she was cheating on him. The song then ends with the chorus and a question to his ex girl.

This song has a rhyme scheme of aa, bb, cc, dd, and ee. At the end of the first two lines ‘spoons’ and ‘bloom’ rhyme which make it aa. The next two lines have ‘sings’ and ‘wings’. The chorus starts off with cc with ‘today’ and ‘specify’. Then lines 5-6 have ‘go’ and ‘know’ which would be dd. Lines 7-8 have ‘trees’ and ‘breeze’. That is all the rhyme there is in the song.

In conclusion, Incubus is a great band and has always put out good music to listen to. They use good imagery words to put the audience in their shoes when they are listening to the songs. By using similes in their songs it also explains his words he is singing and also a way you could relate to his situation. Every two lines in this song rhymed except for the chorus where he mostly repeats the same line over and over again. This is a great song to say goodbye to a cheating girlfriend.

Mary Maloney plays the part of a sweet and innocent wife in the short story of Lamb to the Slaughter however she does not hold this role of the perfect little housewife for very long, for she murders her husband using the frozen leg of a lamb. In the large majority of short stories male characters are structured as domineering over the females who are shown to be submissive, though this does not ring entirely true when referring to the short story Lamb to the Slaughter. The stereotypical type portrayed in this story is generally not reflected in the men and women in today’s society.

Mary Maloney starts off as a perfect example of how females are portrayed as submissive in texts, however; something happens that makes her seem to snap. It could be the cause of all the pent up anger over the years she’s been married and undermined as an individual due to her gender. In the world that she lived in, there was no way of allowing her to release her frustration, for it was not considered proper to do so and she would be beaten or shunted from society if she had done.

Another cause of this violence could be the fact that the writer skims over the point where Patrick Maloney tells her about why he is leaving her and the unborn child. For, it is written “And he told her. It didn’t take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat very still through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror”, it automatically makes the reader assume the worst, that is that Patrick is cheating on Mary and seeing another woman whom he has grown to like more. Before the moment where he tells her this, Mary is trying to discuss his unusual late nights at work in the police force. This encourages the idea that Patrick Maloney has not actually been forced to work later into the night but has actually been seeing another woman or women. It is my belief that with all of these factors crashing down upon her, the moment Patrick informed her he was going out, Mary simply snapped and without thinking about what she was doing or the consequences involved, she killed her husband Patrick Maloney.

Lamb to the Slaughter portrays the female as a submissive character, which is generally unlike the real world today where females are at equal ranking with males and speak their minds when they wish. For it has long been debated about who is the superior sex! We have just recently realised that it is not necessary for a woman to stay at home and do the house work while the men go out and work. Woman are just as capable to obtain and handle roles of power as the men in our society and sometimes even better than most, however jobs that require physical labor are more suited to men for they have a greater physical capacity to deal with this. Therefore; when comparing this to the principles within the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” there is a specific difference in the attitudes and values that are held by the men and women. Even though Mary Maloney does not hold to this role for long she is still maintains those values, as she falls back into her role of submissiveness after the murder of Patrick Maloney.

When relating to” Lamb to the Slaughter” and its portrayal of males and females and their domination over one another, it does not, as I see it reflect the real world today. We are as a majority of people, equal and do not try and dominate either sex in such an extreme manner that is portrayed within this short story.

Some students argue they are not receiving a fair grade, while others wonder why they achieved such a high grade with such low-quality work. This is a growing issue in many American colleges. Professors and students have argued about grades for many years. At Dixie State College, as at many institutions of higher learning, grade inflation is an unfortunate consequence of professors’ attempts at ameliorating their students.

The real problem is not grade inflation, but the differential application of grading standards by different professors. Students’ grades are often more attributable to professors’ personal attitudes towards grades rather than the performance of the students. Some students are disappointed in their grades, considering their efforts. A student may have worked hours on end to get an “A” grade on an assignment only to achieve a “B” or “C”. While, on the other hand, the student’s roommate scores an “A” because of the grading attitude of a much more lenient professor. Neither student wins in this kind of situation.

Some professors may argue that they happened to obtain the most brilliant students, and are rightfully giving out the “A” grade. This seems to escape the laws of probability. How could one professor receive all extremely intelligent students in one class? Even if all the students are that smart, there is no way they could have all done perfect work on that one assignment. Each student’s quality of work will vary on different assignments, for a variety of reasons, including knowledge or skill on the particular effort or differential effort.

Other professors may not claim to be blessed with the brightest students, but actually believe the high scores coming from their student’s result from their superior teaching skills. But, some students won’t benefit from the professors’ skills simply because of a late night out and falling asleep in class or missing class altogether. These students clearly aren’t being influenced by their professors if they aren’t even listening to the lectures.

The problem is simply a lack of uniformity in grading standards. The solution, while seemingly simple, is the development and implementation of uniform grading standards. While this solution may only be approximated, due to limitations on the level of uniformity of assignments and objectivity of grading standards, it is certainly a solution worth affording substantial and ongoing effort. Students’ future opportunities depend on their grades, not to mention to some degree their sense of identity and self-esteem. Professors may minimize the importance of grades, and that learning is what matters. But, the benefit of gaining knowledge must also be balanced with the opportunity to gain employment.

Some professors at DSC are aware of the growing problem, and are working to make it fair for their students, while other teachers are still handing out A’s to those who aren’t deserving of the grade. If the professors fight to make it fair, more and more will become aware of the growing problem of grade inflation, and will grade papers more fairly. Until then, grade inflation will still be a major problem not only at DSC, but also around different colleges in the nation.

A secular being looks at nature and hopes to observe a sign of Divine inspiration. Many find a moral message from their deity in everything created. They humanize every situation as they seek out each nuance of His subsistence within the circle of life. Conversely, each religious conviction has a different opinion concerning how our world came into existence and how it has changed since. Charles Darwin attempted to answer the question of how we came to be as we are today. Although Darwin was educated as a minister, he made his attempt by looking at the facts through the process of observation. In his mind, there was no divergence between his theological education and his scientific curiosity. He proposed that there was a gradual change of species through adaptation of each variety by natural and sexual selection. Darwin was talking about evolution. Since more offspring are produced than can survive, those most adapted for their environment would be able to compete more competently for scarce resources. Species whose individuals are less adapted would eventually become extinct.

In North America, there are three broad-spectrum categories of belief concerning evolution assuming an individual believes in a supernatural being creation science, theistic evolution, and naturalistic evolution. Those who believe in creation science say that God created the universe during six consecutive 4-hour days less than 10,000 years ago, exactly as it depicts in the book of Genesis in the Bible. “All of the various species of animals that currently exist (and that once existed) on earth are descendants of the animals that God created during the single week of creation.”(Robinson, Evolution, 15) While this is the most popular belief among the public, it is the least popular belief among scientists. “Theistic evolution states that the universe is about 14 billion years old. The earths crust developed about 4.5 billion years ago. God created the first cell, and then used evolution as a tool to guide the development of each new species.” (Robinson, Evolution, 15) This is an interesting concept, but does not signify that the progression of nature has a moral message from God to humans. Naturalistic evolution is the same as theistic evolution, but proposes that God had no hand in it. (Robinson, Evolution, 15)

One might inquire why Darwin never used the word evolution to describe his theory. “Evolution,” from the Latin evolvere, literally means, “An unrolling”--and clearly implies an unfolding in time of a predictable or prepackaged sequence in an inherently progressive, or at least directional, manner.” (Gould, History, 000) Stephan Gould stated, “Darwin would not use a word that meant progress, especially when he was trying very hard to separate the mechanism from the common social belief, the psychological hope, the desire of everyone, to equate this process with progress.” (Gould, Revolution, 15)

Creationists persist that since inhabitants were not around as witnesses, evolution is still just a supposition. According to Gould, the feud between science and religion is nonsensical because the two play in different ballparks-they address fundamentally different issues. Tribulations surface when people try to switch playing fields by using science to substantiate religious conviction, or vice versa. “By insisting that the Bible is a bona fide biology/geology/physics textbook, creationists cause needless dissension. What scientists believe and believe in (the latter implying faith rather than reason) is irrelevant. In other words, live and let live. Gould sees no conflict between evolution and religion, if only we compartmentalize.” (Palevistz, 000)

Gould also asks why such cruelty exists in nature if God is so benevolent. He says there is not any answer. That it is not even an appropriate question to ask. “The natural world is neither made for us nor ruled by us it just is. Suffering caterpillars are not put here to “teach” us something metaphorically or theologically.” (Gould, 18) This is the very reason that science and theology do not mesh. However, not everyone would agree with Gould. This anonymous writer sees no reason to compartmentalize science and religion, and makes an argument for the two going hand in hand.

So one could ask how the process of evolution can be controlled by an intelligent power if there is a physical explanation for all the events in the process. The same question could be asked about a car production line, because there is a physical explanation for every production step. What an objective observer fails to see is the ultimate source of the actions that bring about the events. In a car production line, all actions can be traced back to individual acts of human free will. In the process of evolution, the sub atomic particles which penetrate the cells to form mutations are most likely not random, but aimed with a precision beyond our comprehension. If human free will can interact with the physical world to bring about man’s creations, then there is reason to believe that God’s will can be used to bring about the creation of man. (Campfire, 001)

The question remains, ‘Is there a moral message from God in everything created.’ This question cannot and will not be definitively answered as long as there is a great divide between science and religion. One cannot comprehend complicated mathematical equations when he has not yet learned the art of multiplication. Further, theologists do not even agree about who or what “God” is. In China, many believe that,

Creation began with a cosmic egg. Inside the egg was a chaotic mixture of yin/yang, male/female, cold/heat etc. From the egg was born a giant by the name of Phan Ku. He separated the earth and sky. He grew in stature by ten feet a day, raising the sky above the earth by that distance. He also created the heavenly bodies, and carved out the mountains and valleys with a huge chisel and mallet. When he died, the fleas in his hair became human beings. (Robinson, Beliefs, 00)

With every culture having different religions and Gods to worship, and accounting for individual belief, it seems implausible to think that one answer would be fitting of every one in the world. For that reason, I support Gould’s stance that religion is religion and science is science. Let each be what it is.
