The Catcher in the Rye is the type of book that has very few main characters, but has an enormous amount of characters of lesser importance. The entire storyline revolves around the life of a 16-year-old teenager by the name of Holden Caulfield. Holden is quite a popular boy among friends and acquaintances but he seems to have trouble finding someone who he can like entirely. He always manages to find something bad about someone. He finds faults in even his closest friends and voices them throughout the novel. Also, Holden is not a good student. He does very poorly in most of his classes except English. Holden does not at all believe in acting a certain way or joining a group to be popular. He calls all these people “phonies”, and according to him, a lot of people are “phony”.

A few more characters that are somewhat worthy of our attention are his brother D.B. and his sister Phoebe. D.B. is said to be a terrific writer who is now working somewhere in Hollywood. Holden has great respect for his brother, which is a very rare thing for a person like Holden. Phoebe is Holden’s younger sister. He and her are very close. It is said that she is very mature for her age and can hold up a very intelligent conversation with almost anyone. Phoebe is still in grade school.

The remaining characters are solely people that Holden mentions, such as classmates and teachers and are not worthy of mention.

Setting and plot

The story is set somewhere around the mid 100’s and takes place mostly in New York city, but also in some of the suburbs.

The plot revolves entirely around a slice of Holden Caulfield’s life as a teenager. It starts off with him getting kicked out of his school, Pencey, after flunking one too many subjects. He decides to leave the school before the date they gave him. On the way home, he gets into some trouble with alcohol, women and later on, with his health. He stays a few nights at small motel and then goes to stay with an old teacher of his. Throughout his “journey”, we learn about his past experiences, and his view on life in general. Holden’s mentality is quite pessimistic, and rarely does he have good things to say about people. He believes that most people in the world are big “fakes” and are just acting superficially.
