Most people in Shakespearian times were strong believers in witches, witchcraft, the supernatural, heaven and hell. One of the strongest believers was King James, and so William Shakespeare included them in many of his plays. The audiences also loved to watch his plays and were intrigued to see the story of Macbeth, a story of ambition and kingship where you have the witches foretelling the future followed by Macbeth and other characters playing it out. The phrase “fair is foul and foul is fair” is no exception to this as this is how the story becomes.

Macbeth is the story of a man whose ambition to be king gets out of control. It shows the devastation that real power can cause when held by an untrustworthy person and the true nature of evil and its followers. It shows the effects of guilt and conscience, and their battle with ambition.

The three witches are a gathering of old, deformed women stereotypical of what a Shakespearian audience would expect to see. Their language is very confusing with many oxymorons and contradictories. “Fair is foul and foul is fair”, “Lesser than Macbeth, and greater” (Act 1, Scene , Line 6) and “not so happy, yet much happier” (Act 1, Scene , Line 64) are examples of this. They are used to add intrigue to the story, but at the same time confuse the audience making them raise suspicions. It is not just the witches that use this language, when Macbeth says, “so foul and fair a day I have not seen, (Act 1, Scene , Line 6) he is almost mimicking the witches yet he has not encountered them at that time. This is the first time that what seems to be some sort of mind control by the witches is seen, furthering the audience’s enjoyment. And so this is the start of the building of the bond that links the witches cry to the meaning of Macbeth.

As there is no single ‘right’ way of thinking about the play and its meanings. They can be epitomized at different levels depending on what you yourself define the meaning to be. For example from a historic point of view you could say that the witches cry represents the change from the foul world of the 1500’s to the much fairer democratic world of the 1st century. This would also mean that the suspicions that the witches are able to see if not dictate the future would be freakily true.

From a psychological point of view, “Fair is foul and foul is fair” could mean the transition from a sane mans thoughts to a man who can think up as sinister a plan as to kill the king and then to enact it. The only people who can save Macbeth from these thoughts are Lady Macbeth and the witches. Lady Macbeth however encourages the changes and is finally getting what she has always wanted. And the witches are the ones that brought this on and are not going to stop.

A political point of view may be the poverty in the public community covered up by a king of elegance and class who they all respect. To kill the king would be to kill god and would be shunted upon by all. Or kingship and the lack there of by Macbeth. He ignores the fact that the current king is a very good one and takes to the throne for his own benefit, rather than the benefit of the country as a whole.

Illusions create a huge part of the play. The dagger is used to show just how much pressure Macbeth is under. When he sees it he shows that he is so desperate for a way out he’s mind creates its own, only adding to his predicament. As does the ghost of Banquo who not only adds pressure to Macbeth but humiliates him as well. This is both the beginning of his reign and the beginning of the end as suspicions are raised for the first time. Lady Macbeth also digs herself in deeper as she is forced to lie in order to keep her position as Queen. Saying that Macbeth is having a fit and that the guests should all leave. With many of the characters hiding their fair and foul faces, they are too creating an illusion to hide a much deeper world of despair. A good example of this is “look like th’innocent flower, But be the serpent under’t.”(Act 1, Scene 6, Line 6)

However the most important lesson in the play could be that you should always stay in control. Because just as Macbeth lost control of his life due to the witches; the witches lost control of his. Resulting in Macbeth and many other characters dieing. So the phrase “Fair is foul and foul is fair” is quite fitting of the plays storyline.

PLANNING

AIM

To find if changing changing the concentration of an acid will increase or decrease the rate of the reaction when marble is dissolved in hydrochloric acid. With the equation CaCO + HCl CaCl +HO + CO

HYPOTHESES

A reaction occurs when particles collide. This process is based on random particle movement. so therefore, the more particles you have in a space, the more likely they are to collide. Therefore making the reaction accelerate.

This theory can be proved if you compare the rates of reaction with marble in hydrochloric acid. If the acid is of a higher concentration, the reaction will be quicker..

Also if the particles have more energy, they will be travelling faster, making them collide more frequently.

PREDICTION

When the concentration of acid increases, more gas will be given off faster. I know this from my trial experiments.

METHOD

Since I will be working with strong acid, I will wear safety goggles while conducting the experiment.

I will use Marble chips all of a small size. I can use a sieve to make sure they are all roughly similar size- about 7mm diameter.

The amount of acid I have decided on is 10ml. And so the amount of marble must be in excess - g.

I can measure the speed of the reaction by how much gas is given off. I can measure this in cm in a gas syringe. when the experiment takes place, I will take the reading every 10 second to get a good graph for the results. If the reaction goes very quickly, I will take the readings every five seconds.

I will use acid of 0.5, 1, , , and 4 molar concentrations. SInce I only have acess to acid of 1, and 4 molar concentrations, I will have to dilute some acids with de-ionised water to produce 0.5 and molar concentration acid.

To be sure I can rely on my results I will repeat he experiment twice or three times if necessary, because there is chance of inaccurate results for many reasons.

I learnt from the trial experiments that it is quite hard to start a stopwatch, pour acid and stick a bung into a boiling tube all at the same time, so I will get someone to assist me while doing so.

If the experiment goes on for a ridiculous time, I will cut it off. I dont think it is necessary to have the experiment go over three minutes, so I will cut it off then. Also, if the amount of gas goes off the scale I will stop it there.

It is important to keep the starting temperatures constant for all the reactions as this can affect the results by giving the particles more energy (and making it faster).

Analysis of Results.

From the experiment, I have found that an increased concentration of acid increases the rate of the reaction.

I think that the best way of displaying these results is by drawing a line graph. In it, I have used the average of the two sets of results. The pattern I can see is that when the reaction first starts, the reaction is fastest, from then on, the reaction slows. We can see this because the gradient of the curve is steepest at the beginning.

The cause of this curve is that at the start of the reaction, there is the most ammount of acid molecules that are colliding with the marble. (I can draw this from my initial hypothesis)

OBTAINING EVIDENCE

TABLE of RESULTS

Concentrration of Acid. time 10 0 0 40 50 60 70 80

0.5 15 0 5 8 0 4 6 7 8

0.5 14 8 8 41 44 47 48 50

1 8 48 58 67 7 8 7 100 105

1 0 40 54 64 7 81 86 10

40 60 76 0 100

8 55 74 8 100

0 44 70 85 110

0 6 0 110

4 7 115

4 0 65 87 110

During the experiment, I kept the starting temperature constant at degrees.

I stop watch to time the experiment.

I wore safety glasses.

Time is in seconds. Concentration is in molarity..

I repeated the experiment twice to make sur my results were reliable.

Patient care during and operation requires that the surgeon be assisted by two vital aids; the Registered Nurse and the Surgical Technician must work together as a team despite their opposing jobs. They each care for the patient before, during, and after the surgery. Both positions are so crucial that one mistake could result in the death of a patient.

Before the start of the case the RN and ST work together, yet independently at times to get the patient back to the room. The task of getting intra-operative medications from the pharmacy is left for the RN to complete, along with obtaining any wound dressings that may be needed at the end of the case. During the pre-operative phase, the RN greets the patient on arrival to the operating room and assesses their well-being. Usually the right side and site of the procedure is verified by them. They review the chart and establish a care plan that is explained to the patient before being sedated. Before the surgery, the RN communicates with the Surgeon, Surgical Technician and other team members about any irregularities the patient may be experiencing. The RN assists in the safe transfer of the patient to operating table. More physically involved in the surgery are Sufgical Technicans, who assists in the sterile gowning and gloving of the surgeon and assistant. They prevent contamination of the surgical field by the strict paractice of aseptic technique. While maintaining sterility, the ST sets up the back table using sterile instruments needed for the procedure. One of their most important responsibilities is to maintain a sterile surgical field. Like RNs, they are there to care for the patient. They both take in sponge, instrument and sharps counts before the surgery.

During the surgery the needs of the patient are met by the RN and ST. The RN assesses the patient, recieves non-sterile ends of the suction tubing, electro-cautery pencils and other items that must be connected to nonsterile units. While the patient is being anesthetized, the RN ties the gowns of the scrubbed personnel. They must document any irregularities or incidents that occur during surgery. If the ST needs any medications it is the responsibility of the RN to deliver them to the sterile field.

The author John Smith, a pilgrim who arrived to the Americas, wrote a description of the new land in his journals “The General History of Virginia”. In these records Smith shows a wonderful world of vast food and pleasure. Also, William Bradford another pilgrim who arrived to Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts, wrote a book called “ Of Plymouth Plantation ” in which he describes what really happened their, how the pilgrims actually lived. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast both authors and their books. John Smith wrote about the wonderful place the New World was, on the other hand, William Bradford wrote about the realities and difficulties of the New World.

In “ A Description of New England ”, Smith starts by describing the pleasure and content that risking your life for getting your own piece of land brings to men. On the other hand, Bradford reminds us how harsh and difficult the trip to the New World was for the pilgrims. Smith also implies that building your own house, planting your own crops, and having a “ God’s blessing industry ” would be easy to have without having any prejudice. Bradford, instead, writes about the condition of the men who arrived to the shore. He also mentions that, in the New World there was no one to welcome them, more over there was no place to stay in, no houses, no inns. Smith argues about the pleasure of erecting towns and populating them.

John Smith mentions little of the Native Americans. And if he briefly does he says that they are good people and that they helped them when they arrived. Whereas Bradford mentions that the Native Americans greeted them with arrows. The biggest difference between Bradford and Smith is when they write about food. Just as Smith talks about fishing with only a stick and a hook and you will catch excellent fish; also that if you planted crops you could get as much as 50 shillings yearly, use this money for meat and beer, and still afford to become rich. In contrast, Bradford writes about the hunger that in the fist months the crew suffered. He did not mention about the difficulties of planting in a frozen floor, or fishing on a frozen lake. Also that half of the people died in January and February due to the hard winter and harsh conditions. Similarly, England banned all trade with the New World and the pilgrims did not have all the supplies they needed for an average living.

Smith said that hunting was easy and that you could make a living, but what he did not mention was the dangers of the woods. The unknown animals and the ferocious bear, as well as the shortage of ammo and rifles because they did not have any contact with England.

Among the similarities about William Bradford and John Smith’s writings is that the New World was a land for opportunities, that nobody chased them because of their puritan religion

Also, Bradford and Smith wrote about God giving them the opportunity of being in the New World, the opportunity of having a new home away from England.

Smith, as well as Bradford, wrote about how hard the trip from Europe was, and also how the crew had hard and good moments. But, I think there are not many things that Bradford and Smith had in common. One had the negative pessimist side of the trip, and the other fantasized about a marvelous place.

There are always two sides on a coin. By this I mean that a positive person (Smith) will always look for the best, like the joy of adventures, the unexpected, the getting away from a routine. The negative person (Bradford) will always emphasize on the difficulties, inconvenience and dangers. Therefore both authors are speaking with the truth; but about different aspects about the same reality.

I also must give credit for my development to my parents. My parents were very active in the community and they taught me by example what change is brought about by staying involved in the community. That is why today I feel it is my responsibility as a recipient of community intervention to give back to my community in every way possible. I take this responsibility very seriously and that is why I stay involved in my community.

My community involvement started as early as my high school years. I started out going to visit my great aunt in a rest home. I loved to play games and talk with my great aunt and several of the other guests at the rest home. Eventually my Aunt passed on but I still continued to volunteer at the rest home. Our elders have so much knowledge to share and I enjoyed spending time with them, making them smile and helping them enjoy their remaining moments in this world. That’s feeling is what sparked my desire to help others.

By the time I got to college I was looking for ways to help my community. While in college I two main community projects. I tutored at elementary schools and I was a volunteer with a program at the YWCA called S.C.I.P. SCIP stands for Students for Children with Incarcerated Parents. As a SCIP volunteer I spent time with the children doing arts and crafts and socializing. My goal was to help take their minds off of their parents’ situation and focus their minds on constructive projects that they could grow and learn from.

Now that I have graduated from college I am still very active in the community. Even more so than I was in college. It has been instilled in me at an early age that I should give back whenever possible and I feel good knowing that I have helped someone.

Today I serve as a Mentor/Big Sister in a Governor’s One on One Program called Durham Companions. I work with three young ladies ages 10, 1 and 15. I have been in the Durham Companions Big Sister Program for four years and each year I have taken on an additional little sister. The program services at risk youth that may have gotten into some trouble. As a mentor I try to expose the young ladies to as many things as I can. We go to the museums, libraries, cultural festivals, and games. We take dance and art classes, we do homework as well as discuss life and health issues. I try to equip them with as many skill sets necessary for success. Not every one is brought up with the same opportunities and one of my goals is to help level the playing field. When I see these young ladies improve in school and improve their attitude towards life, it is a beautiful feeling.

In addition to being a mentor and a role model to our youth, I am also a teacher with the Mekye Center Saturday Academy. The Mekye Center provides free services to low income students with learning disabilities. There are several programs that help children with learning disabilities but most of them only reach a certain class of people. As a teacher, I work with at most three students at a time, working on math and language skills. The student-teacher ratios are kept low to help give as much individual attention as possible to the students. In addition to working with the students, I also spend time with the parents helping them develop skills to also help their child, reinforcing the skills that were taught in class. Through grants, the Mekye Center was able to send me to intense training on how to teach these skills to learning different children and in return I am in class every Saturday morning helping to fill in the gaps that these children have missed. This is my third year with the program as well as the third year of the program’s existence. I really enjoy working with the children as well as learning new teaching techniques that I can share with other children down the road.

Lastly, I was a Cub Scout leader for the Tiger and Wolf cubs. People used to ask me if I were pledging for a sorority or running for an office. That made me laugh because to me I am just doing what I enjoy and what I feel I am supposed to do as a community member. If it were not for the people that spent time with me, then I wouldn’t be where I am now. I volunteered with the cub scouts for three years and as a leader we did several indoor and outdoor activities that taught the boys good citizenship, sportsmanship, character development, respect for others, and service to their communities. I am no longer a cub scout leader, fortunately it was taken over by one of the parents, but I still occasionally work with the scouts doing science workshops.

I am very fortunate that I have had the time to give to the children whose paths I have crossed and I hope that I have made an impact in their lives. I also hope that they to will give back in whatever way they can, because it is through giving back that communities grow and prosper.

Nature plays a major role and has a profound impact on the lives of all organisms; it can be a friend or a foe. From the time a being comes into existence, it almost immediately, becomes aware of the necessary connection with the outside world. The creature begins by exploring all parts of the new surrounding, deciding how it maybe able to cope with the environment, making all the essential adaptations. As the life form grows, it becomes more and more dependant on nature, realizing how important the trees, grass, and even the sky really are. This dependency is also spiritual, one that comes from within, easily determining moods, emotions, actions, and sometimes proving to be an unlikely escape from reality or serving with unthinkable hardships. This intermingling bond, between being and nature, is almost inevitable in all beings. This union is the source of many struggles and conflicts that prove to be a test to the soul.

This reliance, provided by nature, is nowhere else more evident then in writing. Authors take advantage of the daily struggles that are offered by setting to develop magnificent plots and create stunning suspense. This is especially so in the ageless love story, Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, which describes the adversities that an outlaw soldier faces on his journey home to the unreachable mountain, where he hopes his love will be waiting. The fictional setting of the ferocious forest calls for developed characters that have courage, endurance, and a deep down sense of fright. The characters conflict and ally with natural forces in their daily struggles with life.

Inman, one of the main characters in the novel, has a unique bond with nature, as he battles with it and then uses it as an internal remedy. He grows dependant on it, as both a mental getaway and a source of survival. In the beginning of the novel, Inman, from the confines of the hospital, looks out the window of his room and drifts into a mental ecstasy. For him, nature is an escape from the hospital environment and the pain of his wounds. He flashes back to his childhood. Inman remembers an incident that occurred when he was a schoolboy, and he threw his hat out of the window of the classroom. He went to retrieve it, running away from the school, and fleeing from all his troubles. In his mind, Inman longs to run away from the cruel world full of blood, killing, and misery. He fantasies about Cold Mountain and his life before the beginning of the war. Mentally, Inman establishes his own survival mechanism, a way to drift away from the images of death that are instilled in his mind. These visions cause him to have a great desire to break away, even at the cost of becoming a fugitive and, ultimately this drives him to find his way home.

Inman’s fantasies could not have prepared him for the grueling journey that he encounters; he has immense struggles with nature. Numerous times, he finds himself at death’s door, but because of his mental will, he perseveres. He stumbles upon nature’s cruelty, with harsh weather, dangerous animals, and poisonous plants. Proving to be a major set back to his expedition, Inman overcomes treacherous rainstorms and bitter blizzards. He has no choice but to continue through whatever nature throws at him. While walking miles upon miles under the nightly sky, Inman is greeted the mysterious hoot of owls and crows that fly over his head. Even though these gloomy animals do not pose an immediate danger, they do create an eerie effect that depresses the deserter. Inman must learn to protect himself from the much more threatening animals that roam the landscape. On one occasion, Inman, for his own safety, is forced to drive an attacking mother bear off a cliff, and, with much discontent, shoot her orphaned cub, which would otherwise not survive. To add to Inman’s own wounds, the run away soldier travels through unknown paths that are infested with poison ivy. The ivy injects more throbbing pain into its already injured victim. In terms of survival, nature is fighting against Inman. He must fend for himself, not only against the Home Guards, but also against the brutality of daily life in his surroundings. This leaves him weary and warn out, which, in turn, brings down his conviction.

As nature wages war on Inman, it also supplies him with many necessities. The lush forest offers protection from enemies, provides him with shelter, and many times furnishes him food. Because of the large territory of the woodlands, Inman can, easily, keep himself hidden by taking unknown paths and hiding the bushes. The forest proves to be the safest place that Inman could be in; every time he travels into town to gather more supplies, he finds himself in danger. Inman has many close encounters with the town folk who try to kill him or capture him. He is also able to find caves and rest under the trees, which give him much needed shelter and a limited opportunity to rest from a countless days of walking. Inman quickly learns how to use the forest for his survival, hunting small animals. He soon finds himself connected with the forest in everyway possible, relying on it to stay alive, becoming a part of it, much like the small animals that he hunts

In his journey home, the forest eventually becomes his only source of his spiritual feelings. As Inman travels west, he begins to feel liberate from the war, attempting to let loose his horrid memories of blood. With every step, he is able, in his mind, to come closer to his goal, freedom. Therefore, when he is captured by the Home Guards and is forced to travel east, he feels like his life is ending, like he is traveling back in time. When Inman is shot, buried, and left for dead, he becomes one with the ground and his peaceful surroundings. Later, when the wild hogs uncover his body, he is brought back into the outside world, and reminded of the horror that exists. Inman also searches nature for a spiritual connection that would help him find meaning in his life. The dim landscape represents the suffering within his soul. The loneliness of the terrain symbolizes Inman’s feelings within himself. Inman identifies and envies the crow, a symbol that remains constant and establishes a relationship with all of the characters throughout the novel. He is jealous of this animal’s independence and unconformity to the world that mankind has established. Inman, in a way, also resents bird’s cunning and sneaky ways, as it is able to acquire everything it desires. Moreover, when Inman encounters a woman in the woods and seeks shelter at her camp, he discovers her connection and dependency on all that is around her. He finds fascinating the fact that she lives as a hermit, oblivious to the outside world. Inman soon concludes that be could not be so isolated from the exterior.

Inman is not the only character in the novel that establishes a connection on many levels with nature. Like Inman, Ada uses nature as an antidote to her problems. She is a cultured young lady who is looking for a sense of direction after the death of her father, whom she had depended on all her life. She has absolutely no skills to revive her dying farm to provide her with a steady income. In the beginning of the novel, she takes in her surroundings much like a small child. Ada finds comfort in the trees and bushes that invite her to evade from the outside world. Therefore, she often buries herself in the shrubbery, falling asleep in this safety blanket. Other times, she sits under the peach tree, recollecting her time with Inman, her true love. Sitting on the front porch, Ada’s mind escapes into a book or into memories of her father. In nature, she does not seem to realize or even care to realize her problems.

Ada’s prayers are answered and a miracle comes in the form of a girl named Ruby. She is a self- raised orphan who is looking for affection from a troubled childhood. Her approach to nature is more out of necessity than any other means. Because Ruby, from the time she was able to walk, has been dependent on the outside for survival; she is not able to establish a spiritual connection with the landscape. She is aware of the benefits and dangers of the greenery and therefore is able to help revive the failing farm and help Ada get back on her feet.

Their meeting and relationship was truly a blessing to both Ada and Ruby. From each other, the both learn more than they could have ever bargained for, filling in the gap between practical and spiritual knowledge. Ruby teaches Ada how to work hard and the details of the terrain. She shows her that a little sweat can have great rewards, not only physically but also mentally. She realizes that she feels better about herself because she has interacted with nature in a way that she never has before. Ada offers Ruby something that Ruby has never had before, love. Ada presents her with a connection through books and shows Ruby how to see the world in a different light. She gives her affection and Ruby begins to have a strong spiritual bond with that is around her. Ada assures Ruby that it is all right to dream and to build castles in the sky. Together, each one fills each other’s void and both become much more complete.

The bond between man and nature is expected, as both are interlinked with each other. It can provide great mental relief from daily tribulations and anguish. Other times, it can be the greatest adversary that man has to deal with. This bond is necessary for both existence and sanity. Nature determines many aspects of one’s life, even ones of life and death. The conflicts that the environment provides enable man to become stronger and he triumphs or fails at daily struggles.

Nature’s Trap

Pollution is an environmental infectivity with man-made waste. The two main types of pollution are air and water pollution. Air pollution destructs our ozone layer that gives us a severe heat. Oil, toxic waste, and other noxious chemicals are the cause of water pollution. This will have an effect on all living things underwater. All of us are affected by the pollution in our environment. Thousand of people died because of the illness we usually get in polluted nature. People and animals are dying, plants are not growing up, and our environment is ruined. Mount Pinatubo, the most active volcano in the Philippines, made a lot of damaged in the Philippines. Also, this pollutes the air and the water that became a source of different diseases.

Pollution affects my family and me in the same ways. When Mount Pinatubo exploded on the night of June 11, 11, more than five hundred people died and thousand were injured and became homeless. When it was erupted, my family was celebrating my cousin’s seventh birthday. I can still remember that I was talking to my dad outside our home when I felt like raining ashes. When I look up the sky, I could not open my eyes because of the ashes. The next day, nobody could drive because the dusts are all over the place. I could not even see the people that are only five meters away from me. After two weeks in that situation, I got asthma. I was rushed to the hospital because I could not breathe. I was hospitalized for few days before we moved to our province. The air and water pollution increased enormously. Five in our family got asthma, including my grandfather who died few months ago because of that illness. It is really hard to be on that situation. We could not get out of the house because of the dusts. After one year, Mount Pinatubo blasted again, causing more destruction and lost of human life. I had asthma for six years, but my other family members still have it up to now.

Pollution affects our life, environment, and future. Most of the time, pollution comes from waste, vehicles, and big companies. We just could not stop them because they have the power to make the impossible to possible. It happens all the time, but not with Erin Brokovich. Erin, a mother of three children and an encouraging reminder of the power of the human strength, saved the life of all the people in her society. She fought for their rights against the PG&E Company concerning the contaminated water in their local community. This water pollution causing different kinds of diseases in her neighbors, but nobody wants to fight them because of lack of power and money. Erin Brokovich got a chance to fight them when her lawyer Ed Masry hired her in his law firm. People are dying and most of the children are sick because of the contaminated water comes from PG&E. Erin and Ed battled to them, and they made them pay $ million, the biggest payment ever paid in a direct-action court case in American history.

People are the only one to blame for this problem. We are the one who made this; on the other hand, we are the one who can solve it. We have to do everything we can to avoid it. There are lots of ways to avoid this problem and one of them is recycling. God gave us everything we needed, but nobody is protecting it. We need to cooperate in our government in protecting our mother nature. If we do not protect our environment, time will come that everyone of us will leave in a place like hell.

Narrative theories are a means of looking at a media text in more depth, helping to reveal how a text is constructed and the ideologies that lie behind it. To demonstrate how useful narrative theories actually are for readers of media texts, a selection of four have been used and applied to the television documentary ‘Painted Babies’, a programme based on child beauty pageants in America. The theories are Todorov, Levi-Strauss, Barthes and Prop. They all help to analyse a text in great detail, exploring specifically the belief that all media texts follow certain rules in the way in which they are constructed.

Todorov’s theory claimed that all media texts are constructed to follow the pattern of an equilibrium, a disruption and a closure. When applied to ‘Painted Babies’, this seems to be correct. The equilibrium is the two children that the programme focuses on, Brooke and Asia, practising for the beauty pageant. The taking part in the pageant is the disruption that is going to somehow change the current situation and finally, the closure (or the ‘new’ equilibrium) is Brooke’s triumph against Asia’s defeat. This also brings in Levi-Strauss’ theory of binary oppositions. Jane Treays, the film maker has shaped the ending by using a long lasting camera shot showing Brooke to be miserable and slightly resentful, a real closure following the hard work that was put in by her throughout he programme. Treays has ended her story with Brooke’s win, without showing the long-term effects on her family, the prizes or the consequent publicity. Nor has she chosen to show what happened to Asia’s family instead she has only allowed us to see short clips of celebrations. This could be because Treays knows that the audience are not likely to be too happy about Brooke’s win and (using Prop’s theory of Asia being the hero) she is not keen on the idea of showing too much of Brooke and her celebrations. One flaw in this idea is that of whether or not the viewer wants to feel angered and feel like they have witnessed a ‘scandal’ of sorts (is this why so many people tune in to programmes that are previously billed as ‘controversial’ ?) The reason as to why Todorov’s idea comes in useful when looking at ‘Painted Babies’ is that it not only allows us to revise the story and the construction of the programme, but it also helps to show how a character has developed throughout a particular story. It shows the effects that a disruption and closure has on certain people and this allows us to really understand characters.

Another theory, mentioned before, is the Levi-Strauss theory, which looks at binary oppositions within a media text. It is particularly useful when looking into ideologies within a text. In ‘Painted Babies’ there are many binary oppositions apparent. They include beauty against ugliness (the idea that “little girls should be beautiful”) - this itself is an ideological response from one of the judges of the beauty pageants. It really helps readers to understand the beliefs these people have and how they view society in general. This is important because it contributes to our knowledge of the programme’s topic, by looking at ideological statements, we can see why these people have staged such a pageant. Another binary opposition is rich against poor. When looking at Asia’s family and their financial situation ( voice lessons in the car and dance routines in front of the fridge in the kitchen) Brooke’s family have a lot more money in comparison, seen when she makes a four hour journey every week to professional voice lessons and practising her routines on a specially built stage in their house. Again, this is another look into the characters on our screens and contributes towards how we feel about them. Age against youth is another binary opposition, the prime example obviously being the parent’s lust for victory over their children’s. So is success and failure another ideological view should little girls as young as five be made to experience this at such an age or is it “a long term investment in her future” as Pam said of Brooke? The obvious binary opposition is Brooke versus Asia- the main focus throughout the text, which needs no further explanation other then that it creates characters to ‘guide’ us around the world of child beauty pageants in a story form. Jane Treays showed all these binary oppositions throughout the documentary successfully. The Levi-Strauss theory has proven useful in relation to ‘Painted Babies’, because it has shown the beliefs that characters in the text have, for example; showing the people that bring their children to such pageants and why they do it. It reveals what sort of people they are that these young children are growing up amongst.

The third theory that could be applied to ‘Painted Babies’ in relation to how useful it is as a narrative is Prop. This is the idea that every text is like a fairy tale, complete with the right characters and events. This is useful again because it helps the viewer to understand the story by comparing it to a fairy tale. In this case the story does not seem to have a happy ending depending on how we feel towards the characters. Treays has constructed and presented the story so that we like Asia more and she is seen as the moral hero who loses out to the ’real’ hero (Brooke). The villains in this particular story are definitely the parents of both little girls. As readers of this particular text and providing we have enough knowledge on the subject and regarding our moral connotations in society (we know it’s not right to subject children to this) we can see that the parents are in the wrong and are only out for themselves. “ Grandma needs a new car” Asia’s grandmother is swift in pointing out when discussing Asia’s potential winnings. Other characters in this surreal fairytale that Treays has constructed could be Tim (singer) being seen as the prince and the judges being the helpers. Whatever way it is looked at the story does seem to read like a fairytale, right up to the ‘crowning’ of the Supreme Queen. Prop is useful in ‘Painted Babies’ and in media texts alike because it allows us to look closely at a character in a text, their development, their role in the story and how that story will progress for the people in it.

The final narrative theory to be looked at is Barthes theory. This is when readers of a certain text are able to crack certain codes (enigma and action). This gives them a sense of satisfaction and a reason for reading that text. Action codes consist of actions which audiences (through their cultural knowledge) understand to connote certain things. One example of this from ‘Painted Babies’ is near the end, when the results of the pageant winners are being announced. Treays deliberately leaves the camera on Brooke’s family whilst the results are being read out. This is a sign that we expect Brooke to win, as the shot is there to show the delight in Pam and Bunny’s face. Another action code or codes are the fact that the children are wearing so much make-up and dressing the way they do, we are expecting a tacky show that is severely lacking in taste and is typical of our stereotypical view on American culture. Disadvantages of Barthes theory are that it can spoil endings. If an audience are already familiar with action codes, surely this will spoil the story. The only way Barthes can therefore be useful is when expectations aren’t met in texts. Another disadvantages with Barthes (and indeed with most of the theories) is that there is a danger of looking too far into a text and could mean we lose sight of the plot while analysing too deeply and the fact that Brthes codes occur in really similar texts. Barthes is useful however when the constructed nature of the text is not immediately obvious. Action codes are not all, Barthes also concentrates on Enigma codes, which are often used by producers to keep the audience interested by giving them puzzles to solve throughout the text. In ‘Painted Babies’ for example, there is always the question of who’s going to win the beauty pageant and what fate the other child will receive and the question of how these children will perform having watched them painstakingly practice for so long before. These are questions that provide us with great mystery until Treays reveals them to her audience. The pleasure of cracking these codes makes reading a text that bit more enjoyable and that is why the Barthes theory is so useful for different media texts.

The four above theories of narrative have been applied specifically to a television documentary but they are useful in all areas of the media. For instance, in a film like ‘Blade Runner’, there is an obvious equilibrium, disruption and closure so Todorov’s theory is proved correct. The idea of binary oppositions is also proved apparent with good against evil and humans versus the unknown. Levi-Strauss’ theory is helpful because we are able to see the ideologies behind ‘Blade Runner’, the fear of technology and the future etc. Prop is useful when studying the characters in ‘Blade Runner’, as it would be for virtually any other media text take a soap such as ‘Eastenders’ or ‘Neighbours’ for example. Sometimes however, Prop genuinely doesn’t fit a text so the theory renders completely unsuccessful and not particularly useful. Barthes generally works for all texts because the producers put them in to keep their audiences happy. By cracking codes it sometimes increases tension and makes reading a text an enjoyable experience. This is useful, not necessarily for the audience, but definitely for producers.

To conclude, it is obvious that narrative theories are useful in media texts to a great extent. Whether it is looking into the ideology behind a text and being able to understand why certain people behave in the way they do as the Levi-Strauss theory proves, an example of such being Pam Breedwell’s response about Brooke’s education. “This (the beauty pageant) is her education”. Or looking at the text using Prop, allowing the readers of ‘Painted Babies’ to look at the characters and story in more depth. Or equally, using either Todorov or Barthes’ theories can also allow us to look into a text and really understand both the text from the viewpoint of those that created it and those that feature in it. From Painted Babies, it is obvious that Jane Treays wanted to give us an insight into a world which she found both immoral and distasteful and yet allowed her readers to look for the good in certain characters- namely Asia and her family. Without the knowledge of the narrative theories, readers of Painted Babies would only be able to look on the surface of the text, without being able to really understand the connotations of certain scenes or even why we are watching it in the first place ( Barthes codes give us pleasure in watching certain texts). They are important in helping us to understand a media text and are extremely useful, not just for ‘Painted Babies’ but for media texts in general.

Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano in the Philippines, which is in the centre of the island ‘Luzon’. It is 1 of volcanoes in the Philippines and was 575 ft above sea level before the June 11 eruption, which blew 150 meters of the top. Pinatubo usually erupts large quantities of relatively cool ash and dacite magma because there is a large, shallow magma chamber beneath the volcano. When gas and crystal rich magma evolves in this chamber, explosive eruptions occur.

The 1st signs of an eruption was on the nd of April when people started to notice sounds followed by clouds of steam escaping from the volcano. Within days scientists had set up an observation post and installed instruments to measure the waves of small earthquakes that threatened a major eruption in the near future.

On June 1th a huge cloud of volcanic ash and gas began to rise above Pinatubo and days later the volcano exploded in the nd largest volcanic eruption on Earth in this century Devastating pyroclastic flows ran down the side of Pinatubo and the mountain blasted out more than 10 cubic meters of ash and gases into the atmosphere which lowered temperatures across the world by an average of 1 degree C’.

Despite careful monitoring and the evacuation of more than 00.000 local residents, 847 people lay dead, 184 were injured, missing, and over 1 million people left homeless. Hundreds of millions of dollars in private properties and infrastructure lay in ruins that would require tens of billions of pesos and several years to rebuild. Falling ash destroyed 4.000 homes on the island as the roofs collapsed under the weight of ash being made wet by heavy rains. The ash also smothered 00.000 acres of land.

To this, both women averted their eyes. With a sense of closure to their dispute, both women looked towards the sky just in time to catch a glimpse of a plane piercing through the disobliging clouds. “I think he is going to become a pilot,” said the women simultaneously as the grinned at each other, forgetting about their debate.

While Lily and Cara were debating over Peter’s future, Peter was situated, on the crest of a hill which was the highest point for miles, making it the best spot to view his clouds. This was Peter’s sanctuary, away from the world in which he did not fit. Sometimes Peter would venture to the hill for hours on end. It was something about the clouds and the sky that gave Peter a sense of belonging, a sense of freedom. Here he was free from expectations.

“Why me? What did I do to deserve the punishment of being told how to live my life? It is as if I am trapped in a cube in which every direction I turn, I am trapped. The sides of the cube are closing in and I must break free before it is too late, before my life is ‘stone and bone.’ What must I do?” questioned Peter while gazing into the sky and searching for an answer.

Peter sat staring into the sky hoping for a sign. From the hill Peter could see the children playing with their kites. He recalled the day he took his blue and white crepe kite for its first flight. He was overjoyed with excitement for his kite was no ordinary kite it was a box kite. He could feel the wind rushing through his hair as he ran as fast as his legs could carry him through the grass. The kite flew beautifully. The memory brought tears to his eyes. It was then that Peter realized that was his sign. He was the kite.

CHAPTER

At Kennedy

If you really want to know about my day, it was probably the worst goddam day in my whole life. I, like always, had no clue what we were doing, didn’t have my homework, and to top it all off I came late. My first couple of classes went ok. I kept looking at all the people passing by the door, they are all phonies, they all they all have to be really loud, and try to sound the coolest, but they’re really not. They are all a bunch of phonies. One of my teachers keeps saying “ this is a school you’re not supposed to be having fun”, that kills me. On the other hand I have a teacher that might actually believe that. This teacher is the most narrow-minded person I have met in my whole life. This teacher has the worst attitude that anyone could possibly have, but I’m not going into that subject, or I’ll probably get sore as hell. The good thing is that not all of my teachers are like that. Some of them actually like their jobs.

So anyway, when I got to lunch I had already slept for about 1 hr. By that time I was full of energy. I like the people that are in my lunch period, or at least most of them. Even though a lot of them are phonies, some are still ok sometimes. The other students want to be so cool in the eyes of others, and they just look like morons. There’s this one guy that’s really cool. He knows a lot about a lot of different things. I learn something else form him.

Overall this school is alright. Not too many bad things. There are a lot of phonies but they are everywhere. Damn phonies they are just taking over good space.

By the time I got home I was dead tired. I couldn’t stand up anymore. I guess I’m not doing my homework again. As a matter of fact I don’t know what I have for homework

Planning a vacation is one of the most exciting moments in my life but one thing that I didn’t realize was that times change and people grow up. That’s exactly what happened in the summer of 00. I was on the verge of graduation, excited and ready to go. There was no limit on how much fun I was going to have or how long I was going to be on vacation. Even though I was leaving for two months, and leaving my parents behind. It felt great to know that I was going to go back to the place where I had been before as a child, to the place from which I have so many wonderful memories. Don’t get me wrong, Colombia, South America is a beautiful country but the time that I spent there as a child was with the company of my cousins and friends. We were all kids and all had great times together. This time everyone was grown up with responsibilities, school and work. There were far to busy to keep me company.

What I expected to do while I was visiting was to party with my cousins, hang out with my old friends and probably tour some nice places. Starting with the very first night that I arrived I knew my vacation was going to be one from hell. I heard my aunt call a doctor and talk to her. She said, “I have a big problem. My niece just got here from USA and she literally looks like a pig.” I had already known that my aunt was going to help me lose some weight but the fact that she referred to me as a pig hurt me badly. I started to cry as soon as I heard her say those words. From this point my all of my expectations for my trip were shot down the drain. I knew it wasn’t going to end up like I wanted it to.

I felt better the following morning. I was eager to get out of that house and have some fun. I called my cousins and they all said they couldn’t see me because they had too much work to do. Then I found out that most of my old friends were gone. Some died. Some moved away. I went to visit one that I was told still lived where I remembered. He recognized me as soon as he saw me. It was a little bit awkward at first but then we started to get to know each other again. He had to go to meet up with some friends but he said he would stop by my aunts house and take me out to a club.

I went to my aunts house as a soon as we finished talking. I sat down and turned on the TV and found out that she only had channels and they were all the news. I had to sit there and watch that because I didn’t have anything else to do. My aunt would never really talked to me about anything. She always looked at me with disgust and I was too shy to ask her what her problem was. After all I was under her roof and her rules.

This is when I started counting the days, the hours, the minutes and the seconds. 61 days. Every single day went by like a year to me. What I ended up doing on my whole vacation was a big fat nothing. All day, everyday I would get up at 10am, drink a weight loss juice that my aunt insisted on me drinking, take a cold shower because there was no hot water, get dressed and sit on the couch for a long day of the news .

The food was horrible. Especially since I had to be on a diet. My aunt would only give me salad a piece of meat for lunch everyday and the rest of the day I had to eat fruits. My only problem was I saw where my aunt bought the meat. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. A sweaty, dirty and fat man would unload the meat himself . He didn’t use gloves or anything else. I saw him stick a piece under his arm. I couldn’t believe my eyes. When we went into the market all the meat was mounted on dirty hooks. There were flies everywhere and stray dogs praying for someone to drop a piece for them. Do you really think I would eat that? No way in hell. I think this is why I lost 5 lbs.

My mother called me everyday to make sure I was ok. I cried to her so many nights telling her how I missed my house, my room, my car , my bathroom and just the fact that I have hot water and cable at my house made me miss it even more. Days passed and my daily routine didn’t change at all. I didn’t want to venture out of my aunt because my aunt told me not to. She had some neighbors that were kid napped because they were telling everyone they just got back from USA. Men in masks went to their house asking for the dollars. A dollar here may not be worth much but in Colombia its worth almost triple what would be their dollar. I lived a lot of days in fear because of this. I really stuck out like a sore thumb with my different style of clothes and my different attitude.

Then finally, the day came that I had to leave. This was a very exciting day for me. I was was going home! I got on that plane and didn’t look back. No one could take this happiness away from me. I sat down in my seat and closed the blind. A lady then followed and sat down next to me and introduced herself. Then she started talking to me about how she’s eager to jump in bed with her husband because the man she had an affair with in Colombia wasn’t as good in the bed as her husband. She kept going on and telling me more in detail about this until I finally asked her to stop because I didn’t want to hear it. I didn’t mean for it to come out rudely but oh well. When they played the movie on the plane. This lady next to me wouldn’t stop laughing. She was almost falling off her seat because she was laughing so hard. She was the most annoying person on the plane and she was sitting next to me. Just my luck but it was ok. I was coming home.

The plane finally landed and I was hom. I learned my lessonlol um when you plan a vacation make sure that you have things to do while your there and not end up stuck like I was for months. Now I really know what they mean when they say your home is where your heart is.

Personal Statement

I have always been interested in the visual elements of communication through computing and especially drawing skills. After studying Graphic Communication at standard grade and higher level, my love for design grew and chose to go further into design taking up Art and Design and Craft and Design. I have chosen to apply for this course because I feel that it would be challenging and stimulating and would increase my knowledge and skills in the visual industry of graphics and multimedia. Furthermore I enjoy the challenge of learning new tasks and look forward to gaining new and specialised knowledge everyday throughout my career. I feel that I would not loose interest throughout the course and would thrive on gaining work experience within a national network of design consultancies.

At present, my two favourite subjects are Art and Design and Craft and Design which I am confident in and will work hard to achieve these at higher level. My other school subjects have also helped my knowledge of design and multimedia by giving me an insight into the importance of designing in everyday life.

Outside school, I work in a shop as a sales assistant which gives me valuable experience in working in a retail based environment and has taught me skills like reliability, self responsibility and respect for authority. In addition, I have developed further interest in fashion design through being involved in a ‘Spotlight on design’ class. The content of the course includes designing your own outfit, making it and modelling the design at a fashion show. This has developed my self-confidence and my ability to express myself.

I am a hard working, enthusiastic person who enjoys helping others. I work well within a team and get along easily with people I meet. I have a bubbly and friendly personality, and a likeable nature. I would further be an asset to you’re team due to my ability to use, and act upon, my own initiative whenever necessary. I can work independently and Im always efficient in the completion of my tasks. I believe my skill of time-management will be one of great importance when I go to University.

After finishing my degree at University, I would like to further my education into a higher level of visual elements of communicating and gain more experience in the design and multimedia industry. Or another option I would like to take is to go into employment as a visual designer for a major company such as Coca-Cola.

You might remember the heroic role that newly-invented radar played in the Second World War. People hailed it then as Our Miracle Ally. But even in its earliest years, as it was helping win the war, radar proved to be more than an expert enemy locator. Radar technicians, doodling away in their idle moments, found that they could focus a radar beam on a marshmallow and toast it. They also popped popcorn with it. Such was the beginning of microwave cooking. The very same energy that warned the British of the German Luftwaffe invasion and that policemen employ to pinch speeding motorists, is what many of us now have in our kitchens. Its the same as what carries long distance phone calls and cablevision. Hitlers army had its own version of radar, using radio waves. But the trouble with radio waves is that their long wavelength requires a large, cumbersome antenna to focus them into a narrow radar beam. The British showed that microwaves, with their short wavelength, could be focussed ina narrow beam with an antenna many times smaller. This enabled them to make more effective use of radar since an antenna could be carried on aircraft, ships and mobile ground stations. This characteristic of microwaves, the efficiency with which they are concentrated in a narrow beam, is one reason why they can be used in cooking. You can produce a high-powered microwave beam in a small oven, but you cant do the same with radio waves, which are simply too long. Microwaves and their Use The idea of cooking with radiation may seem like a fairly new one, but in fact it reaches back thousands of years. Ever since mastering fire, man has cooked with infrared radiation, a close kin of the microwave. Infrared rays are what give you that warm glow when you put your hand near a room radiator or a hotplate or a campfire. Infrared rays, flowing from the sun and striking the atmosphere, make the Earth warm and habitable. In a conventional gas or electric oven, infrared waves pour off the hot elements or burners and are converted to heat when they strike air inside and the food. Microwaves and infrared rays are related in that both are forms of electromagnetic energy. Both consist of electric and magnetic fields that rise and fall like waves on an ocean. Silently, invisibly and at the speed of light, they travel through space and matter. There are many forms of electromagnetic energy (see diagram). Ordinary light from the sun is one, and the only one you can actually see. X-rays are another. Each kind, moving at a separate wavelength, has a unique effect on any matter it touches. When you lie out in the summer sun, for example, its the infrared rays that bring warmth, but ultraviolet radiation that tans your skin. If the Earths protective atmosphere werent there, intense cosmic radiation from space would kill you. So why do microwaves cook faster than infrared rays? Well, suppose youre roasting a chicken in a radar range. What happens is that when you switch on the microwaves, theyre absorbed only by water molecules in the chicken. Water is what chemists call a polar molecule. It has a slightly positive charge at one end and a slightly negative charge at the opposite end. This peculiar orientation provides a sort of handle for the microwaves to grab onto. The microwaves agitate the water molecules billions of times a second, and this rapid movement generates heat and cooks the food. Since microwaves agitate only water molecules, they pass through all other molecules and penetrate deep into the chicken. They reach right inside the food. Ordinary ovens, by contrast, fail to have the same penetrating power because their infrared waves agitate all molecules. Most of the infarred radiation is spent heating the air inside the oven, and any remaining rays are absorbed by the outer layer of the chicken. Food cooks in an ordinary oven as the heat from the air and the outer layer of the food slowly seeps down to the inner layers. In short, oven microwaves cook the outside of the chicken at the same time as they cook the inside. Infrared energy cook from the outside in - a slower process. This explains why preheating is necessary in a conventional oven. The air inside must be lifted to a certain temperature by the infrared rays before it can heat the food properly.. It also explains why infrared ovens brown food and microwave ovens dont. Bread turns crusty and chicken crispy in a infrared oven simply because their outside gets much hotter than their interior. Finally, as anyone who owns a microwave oven knows, you never put an empty container inside a radar range. Since nonpolar materials such as plastic and glass dont warm up in the presence of microwaves, there will be nothing in the oven to absorb the radiation. Instead, it will bounce back and forth against the walls of the oven, creating an electrical arc that may burn a hole in the oven. This hushed energy, electromagnetic radiation, flows all around us. All forms of matter, even your own body, produce electromagnetism -- microwaves, x-rays, untraviolet rays. It may interest you to know that whereas the human eye is sensitive to light radiation, the eye of the snake can sense infrared. Your body emits infrared radiation day and night, so snakes can see you even when you cant see them. Though weak microwaves exist naturally, scientists didnt invent devices that harnass them for useful purposes until the 10s. In a radar range, the device from which microwaves emanate is a small vacuum tube, called a magnetron. A magnetron takes electrical energy from an ordinary household outlet and uses it to push electrons in its core so that they oscillate fast enough to give off microwaves. These are then relayed by a small antenna to a hollow tube, called a waveguide, which channels the microwaves to a fanlike stirrer that scatters them around the ovens interior. They bounce off the oven walls and are absorbed by water molecules in the food. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that our exposure to electromagnetic radiation increases by several percent a year. Look around you. The modern landscape fairly bristles with microwave dishes and antennae. Here again, in telecommuncations, it is the convenience with which microwaves can be focused in a narrow beam, that makes them so useful. Microwave dishes can be hundreds of times smaller than radio wave dishes. Industry employs microwaves heat in many ways -- to dry paints, bond plywood, roast coffee beans, kill weeds and insects, and cure rubber. Microwaves trigger garage door openers and burglar alarms. The new cellular car phone is a microwave instrument. Microwaves and Your Body Not surprisingly, as high-powered microwaves have proliferated in the atmosphere and the workplace, a passionate debate has grown over the pontential danger they pose to human health. But that is a topic for another article. For the moment, scientists at the University of Guelph have recently reported using microwaves to raise chickens. Housed in a large oven-like enclosure, young chicks keep warm under a slow drizzle of radiation. So far, the chicks seem to like their home in the range. Theyve even learned to turn on the microwaves whenever they feel cold. A similar scheme for heating human beings has actually been proposed by a scientist from Harvard University. Equipping buildings with microwave radiators would cut energy costs, he says, since microwaves heat people and not the surrounding air. Just set the thermostat dial to rare, medium or well done! Some researchers are concerned that people who work with microwave equipment are absorbing low levels of radiation that may prove harmful over the long term. One line of experiments has shown that uncoiled DNA molecules in a test tube can absorb microwave energy. The unravelled DNA chains resonate to the microwaves in the same way that a violin string vibrates when plucked. The question this raises is this does microwave radiation vibrate coiled DNA in the human body, and if so, is this vibration strong enough to knock off vital molecules from the chain?
