As M.H.Abrams mentioned in the Mirror and the Lamp,

The work of art is conceived to reflect the ideal more accurately than does imperfect

Nature itself (p.4)

our reality could be reflected in the literary work more idealistically than our actual life.

The narrative in this poem comments the atrocity and absurdity of war with solemnity and sublimity. The narrative describes scathingly the futility at the end of war and the calamity caused by war.

The narrator arouses the reading audiences¡¯ attention to the decline and fall of the aggressive mighty power by recounting ¡° Yes, thou must droop; thy Midas dream is o`er; The golden tide of Commerce leaves thy shore¡±(61-6)

What we try to illuminate at this point of view could be classified into three categories.

1. How can we relate the conceptualized meaning of War with the emblem and the significance of the author¡¯s own words?

The narrator cardinally feels the bitterness of disillusionment on the war. The super tragedy of war produces another tragic, like chains; i.e. Famine, Disease, Rapine. The narrator makes her negative position clearly on the human being¡¯s the greatest adversary, War, which reveals the poet¡¯s rigorous consciousness. Freedom is under the rule of the Despot. Though seemingly peaceful nation wishes the curse against the Despot, it cannot help being obedient. The British already comprehends the destiny by saying like this ¡°Thou who hast shared the guilt must share the woe¡±(46) ¡°Ruin¡± of war leads to the ultimate destruction of ¡°Midas Dream.¡±

. The Narrator¡¯s Viewpoint on the Commercialism.

The British feel the nostalgia from the past cultural prosperity.

The narrative describes how glorious that time was, artistically, philosophically and literarily. He feels a strong nostalgia over the glorious past

¡°The Lockes, thy paleys shall instruct their youth, /Thy leading star direct their search for Truth¡± (8-0) Those magnificent flourishes of the Great Britain have passed away, only remains ¡°the gray ruin and the mouldering stone/Europe sits in dust.¡±(14-16) ¡°Gothic¡±, though splendid in the past, is suffering from ¡°night¡±. Meanwhile, the narrative makes a strong desire on the advent of fully commercialized nation at the latter half of the entire poem. She describes ¡°Streets, where the turban¡¯d Moslem, bearded Jew/ And wooly Afric, mets the brown Hindu¡±(165-166) as well as ¡°Where Wealth enjoyed, and Charity bestowed¡±(168) His vision is the influx of every industrialized village full of animation, spirits, ¡°Where Genious and where Valour find a home¡±(180) He expects the impoverished, stained society with the pathetic war to ascend upwardly, ¡°The broken stair with perilous step shall climb.¡±(17)

However, the narrator still misses the splendor, loftiness of the past, ¡°they survey/ The stone where Alexander¡¯s ashes lay.¡± (11-1)

. The Dynamical Energy toward a Commercialized Society

The narrative creates ¡°Spirit¡±, which is, though invisible, progressive value as the immanent nature of Human Nature. It is the ¡°Spirit¡± that can lead Human Nature into the more cultivated, enlightened. There lies the essence of the author¡¯s moral philosophy. Human Nature has a tremendous power of control to conquer what is against his favor, which results in super tragedy, war. However, with the aid of this Spirit, Human could proceed affirmatively.

The author, Rick Hilliwell, is analyzing the way managers are being hired by companies today. He thinks the recruiter should utilize more effectively on how he/she makes decisions in the interviewing process. The following are some elements he uses to describe his point of thought.

In his article, Helliwell (000) gives his thought on how to be a successful leader. “Without exception, leadership skills and critical decision making ability are arguably the two core competencies which distinguish the truly successful business leaders” (para. ). My perception of what he is giving is that the modern day manager has to be able to make decisions faster and lead his staff in the right direction to be successful. This information is, in my opinion, very realistic. I have worked with managers that have no idea on how to make proper decisions, and their people skills are insufficient. On the other hand, I have worked with managers that seem to know how to handle the different situations that are thrown at them.

The assumption I received from his article is if a manager makes an incorrect decision, the company will automatically suffer an assortment of down falls. For example, Helliwell (000) stated, “the wrong decisions can lead to loss of productivity, customers, and staff motivations. Resulting in profit loss, falling shareholders returns, negative cultural factors, and very likely a loss of key executives to competitors” (para. 1). He makes you believe that all bad decisions managers make will cause the company to go under. I have to disagree with Mr. Helliwell on this one. Managers are people, and they do make mistakes, but the majority of companies go on. I do believe in the importance of managers having the skills to make quick decisions. Plus, the way he/she uses the thinking process to make the right choices for their companies. I know events change everyday, and managers need to recognize those changes to properly make the right decisions.

His emotions are strong towards the thinking process that middle and upper management should have at all times. The logic that supports his emotions suggest that the most critical element a manager should possess is the decision making process. If every manager from top to bottom are not consistent, and make high percentage of bad choices, the company could fail.

In summary, to be a quality manager in today’s business world, one must have the ability to make the critical decision quickly, and have exceptional leadership skills. Mr. Helliwell (00) offers ways to help find the right managers for the job; “intense interviews, problem solving questionnaires, check references, and ask questions to see how they react” (para 14 & 17).

Analysis of Night by Elie Wiesel

Genre

Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, and his experiences at the Auschwitz concentration camp and the Buchenwald work camp during World War II.

Context

Cheap Custom Essays on Analysis of Night by Elie Wiesel

essay writing service

Night was originally published in French in 158 and was written in memory of Elie Wiesel’s parents and his little sister, Tzipora. The book is written in chronological order beginning at Wiesel’s childhood home in Sighet, Transylvania toward the end of 141. Wiesel was 15 years old when his family was transferred to the Jewish ghetto in the Spring of 144. Shortly thereafter the family was transported to the concentration camps in Poland. They arrived at Auschwitz where Wiesel and his father were separated from his mother and sisters. Wiesel and his father were sent to the labor camp and his mother and sisters were sent to the gas chamber.

At the end of the war in 145, Elie Wiesel spent a few years in a French orphanage. In 148, he began to study literature, philosophy and psychology in Paris at the Sorbonne. He became a journalist at that time and wrote for a French newspaper. Since 176, Wiesel has served as Andrew Mellon Professor of Humanities at Boston University. President Jimmy Carter appointed Wiesel Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 178. In 185, Wiesel was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement and a year later he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Night would be of interest to anyone who is interested in learning more about a survivors experience during the Holocaust. It would also attract admirers of Elie Wiesel and readers of the more than forty books he has written.

Language

Night is a short yet intensely powerful book and is relatively easy to read. The chapters flow from one to the other. The language is simple and less dense for the young adult reader to easily comprehend. It is written from an adult perspective looking back to his childhood. The writer has had time to reflect on his experiences, the writing is dispassionate without emotion. The tone of the book is stated matter of factly. “And I did not know that in that place, at that moment, I was parting from my mother and Tzipora forever. I went on walking. My father held onto my hand.” (Wiesel, pg. 7) The major characters in the book were Elie Wiesel and his father, Chlomo Wiesel.

Consequences

Wiesel imposed a ten-year vow of silence upon himself before he attempted to disclose his experiences at the death camps. He has since dedicated his life to ensuring that no one forgets what happened to the Jews during the Holocaust. Night is a powerful story that needed to be told to educate our children so that we never allow this kind of horror to be repeated.

Summary of Night by Elie Wiesel

Night is a moving memoir of Elie Wiesel’s experience in the death camps. The book shows how life in the concentration camps changed many into something less than human and tests their faith. The conditions in the camps made men do things they normally wouldn’t do.

In May, 144 the deportations began in Sighet, the Wiezel’s were among the last Jews to be loaded into the cattle cars, with one hundred people in one car. After four days, the train stopped at Auschwitz. Wiesel, then 15, followed the instructions of a fellow prisoner and told the SS officer that he was eighteen and in good health. He and his father were sent to be slave laborers. His mother and younger sister were taken to the gas chambers. Wiesel and his father survived first Auschwitz and then the Buna labor camp. They endured beatings, hunger, roll calls and other torture while they were in the camps.

One of the most unforgettable moments in the book was in Chapter 7. In the winter of 144, Wiesel’s foot swells up and he has to have an operation to prevent it from being amputated. Two days later, the SS forced the inmates of Buna on a death march. The prisoners are forced to run in the cold and snow, they are shot if they fall behind. They keep running through the night, it is impossible to slow down because there are so many people in the mob. Then they are crammed into freight cars and sent to Buchenwald. Inside the train there are bodies, both dead and alive, tangled up in each other. Each time the train stops, SS officers order that the corpses be thrown out of the car. Two men begin to throw Wiesel’s father out of the train, but Wiesel revives him by slapping him viciously and screaming desperately in his face. The prisoners travel for ten days, eating only snow. They finally reach their destination alive and Wiesel’s father becomes ill. He dies a few days later after a guard shatters his skull with a club.

There is no more story to tell after Wiesel’s father dies. Nothing mattered anymore. On April 11, the Americans come and the camp is liberated. Wiesel looks into a mirror for the first time since he was in the ghetto and sees a corpse looking back.

Personal Reaction

Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor and humanitarian. Since the end of World War II Wiesel has made an enormous contribution toward enlightening the world to the horrors of the Holocaust. He has devoted his life to educating society through his experiences in order to prevent another Holocaust from happening. Wiesel is a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and has written numerous novels. I greatly admire Elie Wiesel for rising above the hatred and evil and turning his horrendous experiences into benefiting our society and ensuring that the atrocities that took place during World War II never happen in the future.

Many who have suffered the injustices that Wiesel has might seek revenge. Others may withdraw from life altogether. Elie Wiesel’s life has become a shining example of an alternative to the cycle of violence and retaliation. He has demonstrated that he will not be a victim, but a true survivor. He has devoted his life to teaching others how to forgive in an unforgiving world.

Even though he believes in peace, Wiesel supports President Bush’s policy of eradicating terrorism. He is opposed to war but is in favor of the military intervention in Iraq because of Saddam Hussein’s violations of human rights. I agree with Wiesel in that we have a moral obligation to intervene where evil is in control. We must not let a megalomaniac like Saddam Hussein inflict his terror upon the innocent people of Iraq.

In 186 Elie Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in improving the living conditions, and promoting the understanding and global acceptance of Jews. During Wiesel’s Nobel lecture he states “Mankind must remember that peace is not God’s gift to his creatures; peace is our gift to each other.” His message speaks of peace, atonement and human dignity. Elie Wiesel and his wife, Marion, established the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity shortly after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Foundation seeks to combat indifference, intolerance and injustice. Wiesel has taken on the role of messenger to promote peace throughout the world.

Wiesel has written numerous books about the Holocaust in a way that makes you actually feel like you are right there with him. He has written numerous essays and articles all of which are a piece of his life. Wiesel’s more than forty books have won numerous awards. His books are autobiographical and are formed by his past experiences. They should be read in the order that they were written. Night was the first in a series of books that Wiesel wrote.

I feel Wiesel is a man to be held in high regard and respected because he has dedicated his life to being a humanitarian and teaching others to never forget the past and to learn from the horrible experiences that he and many others endured in the concentration camps. I believe education is a key factor in making society aware of the perils of evil and the consequences of racial bigotry and hatred. Knowledge can be a powerful tool that should be used for the benefit of society not the destruction. We must not let history repeat itself and allow another mass extermination of mankind.

Wiesel is in the second row of bunks, seventh from the left.

Introduction.

Osmosis is the net movement of water between water molecules from a weaker solution to a stronger solution through a semi-permeable membrane.

Structure of a plant cell.

Buy cheap how much does a potato chip grow in moler solutions? term paper

cheap term papers

What happens when a plat cell is placed in a solution weaker then the solution in a cell?

Osmosis takes place. Water diffuses into the cytoplasm and vacuole through the selectively permeable membrane. When this happens the solution in the middle is more concentrated and the vacuole expands while the cytoplasm moves to the side.

What happens when a plant cell is placed in a solution that is stronger then that inside the plant cell?

Again osmosis takes place. Water diffuses out of the cytoplasm and vacuole through the selectively permeable cell membrane. First the cell shrinks slightly and becomes flaccid; then the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall. This causes spaces between the cell membrane and the cell wall. The solution is less concentrated.

First experiment

In this experiment I am going to fill three beakers with water and salt. The first beaker will just be water (week solution), the second with a small amount of salt (medium) and the third with even more salt then the second (strong). In to each of these I will place a potato chip that will be pre-measured in millimetres. I will then apply labels to the beakers to remind me which is what solution. After leaving the piece of potato chip in the beaker for twenty-four hours I will re-measure the chip (in mm) and record the results.

Weak Medium Strong

Prediction

I predict the potato in the weak solution will expand, the potato in the medium solution will shrink a little bit and the potato in the strong solution will shrink more then in the medium.

Results.

Solution length before the length after change in

Strength experiment. Experiment length

Weak 44 mm 4 mm +5mm

Medium 47mm 45mm - mm

Strong 47mm 44mm -mm

Conclusion

My results have proven that all of my predictions where correct.

. The length of the potato did increase in the weak solution.

. The length of the potato chips in the medium and strong solutions did decrease.

. The length of the potato in the strong solution decreased more then the potato in the medium solution.

Graph to show the increase and

decrease of potato chips after being

soaked in a certain strength solution.

Second experiment.

The first experiment showed me if a piece of potato is placed in a weaker solution it will grow but if placed in a stronger solution it will shrink, all because of osmosis.

In this experiment I will take a potato and cut it in to two equal pieces measured in mass (to two decimal places). One will be placed in distilled water and the other in a one molar (m) sugar solution. (4.g per litre. Much “stronger” then the “strong” solution in the first experiment.) We are using sugar for this one as salt may be damaging the cell membrane. I will then cover each solution in cling film so no evaporation takes place. I will then re-weigh it after twenty-four hours.

Find out

I will find out the change in mass, whether it’s more (+) or less (-).

I will then have to calculate the percentage increase.

Formula =

Change in mass (+ or -) x100

----------------------------------

Original mass.

Results table

Solution strength (m)

Final mass (g)

Change in mass (g)

Calculate percentage changing in mass.

Beaker

1m

4.g

.58g

1.74g

Beaker two percent change in mass

1.74x100 = 174 / 4. = 41.

Graph evaluation

This graph shows the isotonic point. This is the point on the graph that shows the predicted strength of the potato cell sap, this figure is 0.8 m. This means if my prediction is right, if I succeeded in making a 0.8 m solution then the potato would neither gain nor lose mass. This means it is identical to the potato cell sap.

Plan third experiment.

In this experiment I will find out accurately the strength of the solution inside a potato cell. To do this I will make six different strength solutions. These will be 0.0m, 0.m, 0.4m, 0.6m, 0.8m and 1m. In to each of these I will place three potato chips (cut with a potato cutter to make it fair) before we put them in I will measure the mass of them. When the three chips are each measured and in the beaker I will put cling film over each beaker to stop evaporation making it a fairer test. I will leave them for twenty-four hours and measure the mass again. I will then add together the mass of the three chips and divide by three to find the average. Through this I will be able to plot a better graph and to see if the solution is hypotonic (weaker then the cell sap) iceotonic (the same strength as the solution) or hypertonic (stronger then the solution).

To make this fairer I will

Use a chipper so the potatoes are all the same size.

Measure the solution in to the beakers using a measuring cylinder (75 cm)

Cover the beaker with cling film to stop evaporation.

Use three pieces of potato in each beaker to get the average.

Prediction

I predict that the concentration of the cell sap to be about 0.4m

Analysis and Conclusion

Although my prediction was a lot of the actual isotonic point graph gives me an excellent set of results. I suppose I am pleased with my unusual results as it gives me the chance to try to find what was wrong. In my experiment the potato in the water had a .46% gain in length. The potato in the 0. molar sucrose solution had an increase in length of 0.40%, the potato in the 0.4 molar solution had a decrease in length of .75 %. The potato in the 0.6 molar solutions had a decrease of 17.85%, the potato in the 0.8 molar solution decreased by 0.8% and the solution in the 1 molar solution decreased by .0%. These prove that the higher the concentration of water in a cell the more it grows. Also the stronger the solution the more it loses.

Evaluation

I think that the experiment went very well, even though there were odd results they didn’t produced a good graph. Still there were a few areas where there could be improvement. Firstly, when I dried off the water on the potato chips after the experiment and before I weighed them, I used a paper towel. This might have either taken some water out of the potato or it might of left some excess water on the potato. This part of the experiment is difficult to come up with an accurate and fair method, as other ways would also lead to some slight mistakes. I.e. a hair dryer will heat the chip and my evaporate some of the water and I would have to dry each potato for an equal amount of time with the hair dryer.

Also the potato itself was not exactly the same size, although I did try to cut them to 5cm each.

Another way of improving the results would have been to leave the experiment running longer, this would have enabled me to find the saturation point (when the potato can no longer take in any more water) and dehydration point (when the potato cannot lose any more water) and therefore get a more accurate result.

I could have kept all the chips the same constant temperature. I could of done this in an incubator but I did not have the fertility’s to do so.

Also I could of chosen potato’s that where different ages (old, young etc) and repeated the experiment several times with the potato’s of different ages to see if that would off effected the posses.

Apart from different aged potato’s I could of used different breeds of potato’s

Finally, I could extend the experiment to a more exact level by looking at the potato cylinders under a microscope, and then I would be able to see the cells in greater detail and draw some more observational results.

Many artists become famous, many become rich, many become popular, but few set the ground for a new genre of music, that has been around for a short amount of time, to take it to a higher level and to glorify it. Unlimited is one of these few artists. They have taken Euro dance music to a totally new level.

It all started when twenty year old Ray Lothar Slijngaard, a chef at Netherlands Schiphol Airport and a breakdancer, was at his friends show. His friend, a rapper called Marvin D, was performing that night, but the crowd wasnt moved at all. So then Ray took the mic, started rapping, and the crowd went wild. Shortly after, Ray was put in touch with two well-known producers throughout Europe, Phil Wilde and Jean-Paul DeCoster.

Around the same time, twenty year old Anita Danielle Doth had been involved in a female rap group called Trouble Sisters. She had also been working with Marvin D as a dancer and backing singer. Soon after, she got tired of just standing around, looking sexy. Because she wanted to perform, Marvin introduced Anita to Ray, who had been working with his producers on a rap version of Get Ready For This. Anita Doth agreed to joining the group under her stage name, Anita Dels, and so Unlimited was born.

In 11, Unlimited released their first single called Get Ready For This. Soon after, a single called Twilight Zone was released in 1, proving that Unlimited was more than just a one-hit wonder. By this time, their fame was sky-rocketing not only in their homeland, Holland, but also throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Next, Unlimited released their first album Get Ready in 1, showing the world that they were far more than just a singles act, also spawning the releases of two popular singles, The Magic Friend and Workaholic.

With their fame and popularity spreading rapidly throughout the world, Unlimited then released another single in 1, called No Limit, hitting the number one spot in thirty-five countries. Shortly after, they released yet another single called Tribal Dance in the same year. After being recorded, re-recorded, mixed, and remixed, they soon released the album No Limits. It became an incredibly big hit throughout the world. Because of the albums success, three new singles of tracks from their second album were released Faces and Maximum Overdrive, both in 1, and Let The Beat Control Your Body in 14.

At this time, there were many new artists emerging who were sounding like Unlimited. Many of them followed the same style Unlimited had with a rapper, a singer, and dance music in the background. Such artists include Brothers On The 4th Floor, Ace Of Base, Cappella, and Technotronic. The group Technotronic was basically a mirror of Unlimited, reason being that one of the producers from Unlimited was also one of the producers for Technotronic. It was quite obvious that Unlimited had such a very powerful effect, in Europe and around the world, that others were following in their footsteps.

Wasting no time, Unlimited then started to work on another single that was released in 14, called The Real Thing, which was the precursor to their third album Real Things, also released in 14. Subsequently, three more singles were released from this album No One in 14, Here I Go in 15, and Nothing Like The Rain in 15. By then Unlimited was nearing the end of their contract, but they still continued to work on new projects. The next single that was released in 15 was a new track called Do Whats Good For Me.

October 0th of 15 saw the release of Unlimiteds final album Hits Unlimited. Their fourth album was composed of thirteen hit singles and three new tracks. Shortly after, the single Jump For Joy was released in 16, as rumors of Unlimited splitting up spread throughout the world. As a result, Unlimited made one final single in 16, called Spread Your Love, as the rumors had been confirmed. Anita and Ray had both left Unlimited after their last and final single.

Though there were many rumors of why Unlimited broke up, there were three main reasons for why it had happened. First of all, Anita and Ray were fed up with their contract. They were not allowed to write any of their songs. In fact, they never truly did. They were only allowed to write lyrics and perform. The producers were in charge of putting together the music. Second of all, Anita and Ray had their own ideas as to what they wanted to do. Ray wanted to do more hip-hop influenced material, while Anita wanted to make her own dance music. Lastly, the members of Unlimited were simply not getting along with each other. Near the end, they could not stand each other anymore. So because they didnt wish to renew the contract for another five years, everyone went their way. However, Phil Wilde and Jean-Paul DeCoster were not about to give up on the group.

Anita then went to start her own dance program and was busy with her own radio show, while Ray was busy with his own record label, called Rayvano Records, named after his son. Ray then wrote and released his first solo single in 17, called X A Day. At about the same time, Jean-Paul and Phil were looking for new members to add to the group. Originally, they were looking to ask Sylvia Samson to join by herself, but when she took a look at the contract, she refused. Shortly after, they started to hold auditions for a new Unlimited. As a result, two new girls, twenty-six year old Romy van Ooijen and twenty-three year old Marion van Iwaarden, were chosen to be the lead singers of Unlimited. And so a new Unlimited was born in 18.

The female duo and the producers worked together to release the single Wanna Get Up in 18. The four of them had digressed from how the old Unlimited was. They didnt want to be another dance act, so instead they wrote tracks that were more pop and r&b influenced. Their first single was not as successful as they had hoped. Regardless, they went on to release their first album together, called II. Shortly after, they released two more singles in 18, called Edge Of Heaven and Never Surrender. Unfortunately, this new Unlimited was not nearly as successful as the original. At that time, Romy and Marion were complaining about how they were not allowed to write their own tracks. They claimed to have been promised to write their own songs, but since Phil Wilde and Jean-Paul DeCoster refused, the two girls left, and so was the end of Unlimited.

By that time, Anita had been working on releasing her own singles, Universe (Believe In Yourself!) in 1, Lifting Up My Life in 1, and This Is Reality in 000. Ray had teamed up with a man named Orpheo MacDonald to form an r&b group called VIP Allstars. The two of them then released two singles in 1, called When Its My Turn and Mamacita. Afterward, Anita made her own dance album called Reality, which was released in the year 000, and was very successful.

As of now, there is no news of any new projects from Unlimited, Anita Doth, or Ray Slijngaard. Despite the fact that Unlimited is no more, fans will never forget them, and even today, singles and albums of Unlimited are currently being re-released because of the high demands from numerous fans. It just goes to show how strongly Unlimited has positively influenced both Euro dance music and people around the world.

Unit Reflection

In the second unit we learned about the Nebular theory. The Nebular theory states that the solar system began as a huge cloud of dust and gas called a nebula, which later condensed to form the sun and its nine planets. The sun was the first to form. The nebular theory says that shock waves from a supernova disrupted a nearby nebula. The nebula began to rotate, and gravity pulled more and more matter into a central disk. The disk became the sun. Clumps of gas and dust around the sun formed the planets and other objects in the solar system. Soon protoplanets formed. There are the inner and outer planets. The difference between them is the inner planets are solids and the outer planets are gasses. The inner planets are near the sun. The sun boiled away most of their lightweight gases and they became solid. The inner planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The outer planets were less affected by the sun so they kept their lightweight gases. They include of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

We learned about inertia and gravity. It all started when Kepler discovered that planets moved in elliptical orbits. Although he didn’t know why they did this. Newton began to wonder and he hypothesized that two factors contributed to their orbits, inertia and gravity. The law if inertia states that an object’s motion will not change unless that object is acted on by and outside force. He believed that all objects moved in a straight line unless something was causing it to change motion. Then he said that the gravitational pull from the sun caused the planets to move in a circular motion. When you put these two things together they will make an elliptical shape or an oval.

In this unit we learned about three things meteors, meteorites, and meteoroids. A meteoroid is a chunk of stone or metal that orbits the sun. Meteoroids are found in the asteroid belt or from comets that have broken up. Meteors are streaks of light produced by a meteoroid as it burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere. Meteors are also known as shooting stars. A meteorite is a meteor that strikes the Earth’s surface.

We also learned about escape velocities. An escape velocity is a velocity needed to escape the Earth’s gravitational pull. To explain it better it is the amount of force a rocket needs to escape from the atmosphere. The escape velocity depends on the mass of the planet and the distance of the rocket from the planet’s center. Astronomers have to deal with this all the time so space ships can leave the earth and go to other planets. You need to know the escape velocity of a planet because if you don’t the atmosphere will slow down the rocket and it might not be able to pass through. Here are some examples of the velocities of other planets in our solar system. Earth is 11. kilometers per second, the moon is . km per second, and Jupiter is 6.4 km per second.

The last thing we learned was about period of rotation and period of revolution. Period of rotation is the time it takes a planet to make one rotation on its axis. This is known as one day on a planet. The axis is an imaginary line drawn through the center of the planet. Period of revolution is the time it takes a planet to make one revolution, orbit, or circle around the sun. This is known as one year on a planet. Planets rotate on their axis and revolve around the sun at the same time.

I found that the planet Uranus was the most interesting to me. I think it is interesting because Uranus is tilted on its side. Uranus looks like it is sideways because its axis is on a 0-degree angle. All the other planets are around 0 degrees but I’m not positive on that fact. All I do know is that Uranus is the only planet that looks sideways. What makes it more interesting is that Uranus has rings, so it looks like the rings go up and down instead of left to right.

During the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s, the Catholic Church did not want to be rolled over by the Protestant tide and so they began the Counter Reformation. The Protestant Reformation was the religious, revolutionary movement in the 16th century against the Roman Catholic Church authorities and certain doctrines, which led to the establishment of the Protestant sect. The decline in Church prestige, abuses such as corruption, worldliness in the church, simony (selling of Church office positions), and the sales of indulgences (pardons for committed sins) caused the Reformation. Social, economic, and political problems (Black Death, Hundred Years’ War, money for St. Peter’s Cathedral’s construction, and local leaders not wanting the Church to run things, etc.) were also factors in the cause of the Reformation. The Counter (Catholic) Reformation was the answering reform movement in which the Catholic Church tried to prevent Protestantism from spreading. The Roman Catholic Church set out to reform by using instituting measures such as the Council of Trent, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and the Inquisition, in which Church practices were defined.

Between 1545 and 156, the Roman Catholic Church held a series of conferences in Trent, Italy called the Council of Trent. They were held in order to define Catholic beliefs and counteract Protestant views and teachings. Three popes, Paul III, Julius IIII, and Pius IV led the Council, which was a central event in the Counter Reformation. The Council was held in three periods which were interrupted by wars and other disputes. In general, the Council upheld traditional Church doctrines, but significant reforms in religious practices were instituted. Clergy was punished for corruption and worldliness. New schools were established so the clergy could be better educated in order to challenge the Protestant teachings. Simony and indulgences, the practices which sparked the start of the Reformation, were uprooted. The council also rejected Protestant views on salvation and sin. It reaffirmed that the Bible was a major, but not the only source, of religious truth, and that salvation comes from faith and good works. In the end, even though it did not stop the spread of Protestantism, the Council of Trent succeeded in making some changes, not by condoning violence, but simply by presenting a united front against the Protestants. The Church at last proved itself capable of action, and of reinforcing its representation of the orthodox faith by making significant reforms to the religion.

The Society of Jesus is a religious order of men in the Roman Catholic Church. The members of this order are called Jesuits. In 154, Saint Ignatius of Loyola and six of his companions, who bound themselves by vows of poverty and personal integrity, founded the Society. Pope Paul later confirmed it in 1540. Jesuits supported Catholic doctrines. Their object was to limit or even stop the spread of Protestantism and combat heresy. This strict program required spiritual and moral discipline, intense religious training, and obedience to the Church. The Jesuits became missionaries who traveled to distant places, such as Asia, Africa, and the Americas, to spread Catholicism and they risked getting caught while providing spiritual needs to Catholics in Protestant lands. Many Jesuits have been canonized (declared saints) by the Roman Catholic Church. The best-known Jesuit saints include Robert Bellarmine, Peter Canisius, and Isaac Jogues.

The Inquisition was a permanent judicial institution, which was set up by the papacy in the Roman Catholic Church. It was established in order to seek out, try, sentence, and punish heretics (ones who go against an accepted belief). Starting in the 1th century, rulers were required to prosecute heretics. Pope Gregory IX established the Inquisition in 11. It operated mainly in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain and soon was used against Protestants. The Inquisition often used cruel methods in order to secure convictions for heresy. Penalties for convicted heretics ranged from prayer and fasting to imprisonment. Secular authorities could execute those who refused to recant (to give up one’s views of beliefs). Pope Sixtus IV authorized the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. The auto-da-f, a public ceremony at which sentences were pronounced, became an elaborate celebration where many heretics were burned at the stake. In 155, the Inquisition set up the Index of Forbidden Books. This is a list of books that are immoral or irreligious for Catholics to read (usually books that portrayed Protestant views). Catholics now condemn the Inquisition for violating modern standards of justice.

Even though the Counter Reformation did not have much effect on the spread of Protestantism, it certainly did effect European life in many ways, good and bad. The Jesuits helped to spread Catholicism throughout many parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe. The Council of Trent tried to set the direction of reforms in the right path. Whereas in the efforts to end heresy, the Inquisition killed thousands of people and tens of thousands of lives were ruined through imprisonment and confiscation of property. By the 17th century, the Roman Catholic Church stopped the spread of Protestantism in France, won back Hungary and Poland, and kept Catholicism in Bavaria, Austria, Ireland, and the southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium).

Why Americans Should Eat Less Fast Food

In recent years, studies have shown that Americans are becoming more obese

each year. The culprit is the increased use of fast food. Fast foods also interrupt family

infrastructure because dinner is an important strategy for communication among family

members. Last, the convenience of fast foods contributes to American laziness. These

are just a few reasons that Americans should eat less fast food. Personally, the

American people should come back and sit at the table for a home-cooked dinner.

Again, they consist of the concern for our bodily health, the health of the family

infrastructure and how much the American people depend on the swiftness of fast food.

Philadelphia, our hometown is ranked as one of the most obese cities in the

country. Studies have shown that the American people are the number one consumers

of food and yet the least populated country. For scientific studies have shown

Americans eat up to five times more sodium and saturated fat than is supposed to be

eaten by a human being. In fact, greater than 7 million U.S. citizens are over weight or

obese or about 54.% of men and 50.7% of women adults. What has become the value

of the body? Americans have become totally and utterly saturated in the instantaneous

need for good food, flashy media feed and a reasonable price. But the price is much

greater than anyone is concerned about. Common knowledge shows that serious

health dangers come into

affect such as clogged arteries, high cholesterol, high blood pressure.

Now, what if us Americans were willing to sacrifice a substantial amount of time

each week to spend more time with our families. More talking and at the table dinners,

studies suggest, improve family communication skills and increases general libido with

every family member. This doesnt mean that the table dinner will automatically solve

ones familys problems, but why even assume that the result is automatic? We need to

get out of our right now craving heads that not everything comes in automatic fashion.

Some things no matter how desperately you try, cannot be done with speed and if we

all just attempt to slow the pace down and reconnect to the roots of the American

dinner table we will find the most precious things are established with time. Not sent

through a package or an email.

Finally, the body is nothing without the mind dictating its every action. Therefore,

each action of each American waiting in line for their biggy-sized meal has a deeper

meaning. What is everyone truly in line for? It is not just tasty food at a slender price. In

my mind it’s the need for the instant, the available, the convenient. My answer to this

instant email societal manifestation is due to our whole country turning electric in the

metaphorical and actual sense. We all need everything in front of us at electric speed.

DSL, cable, the Internet, faster cars, faster planes, faster living; we are all becoming so

preoccupied with the flashiness of society that were losing the things that actually hold

society together, family.

It is not the actual at the table dinner that holds the solution, but what lies in it.

Just as fast food chains are not the real problem, but what can be created with its sheer

instant, have it your way, right away driven market. How easy is it for all of us to be

just preoccupied in our own melodramas while chopping down on a Whopper rather

than discussing the problems we face with our family. And this is where I believe the

problem with many Americans still stays and will stay, as stable and recognizable as the

golden arches.

Science can be used or misused. As we are inching towards modern era the destructive purpose is getting momentum.science can be a blessing as well as curse.

Take the case of fission and fusion. We can use this for

generation of power. But now it has got the most destructive side,Nuclear weapons, which can cause an end to earth population within no time.Again the use of halogen chemicals

made our environmental inbalance.Nobody else in the world can bring the ozone layer into the former condition and we are exposed to ultra violet rays .Again in the case of medical science we are using the destructive sides.

Even the present generation is not exempted from the severe drawbacks of the past experiment.

The media plays a major role in shaping people’s opinions about the rest of the world. Unfortunately, global media ownership has dwindled from 50 (in 18) to currently about nine mega-corporations, including AOL Time Warner, Disney, General Electric, News Corporation and Viacom, resulting in an increasingly banal and parochial selection of news and issues for the American public. Foreign news is lacking except in the events of disasters, wars or ruffled American interests. The industry has become more interested in profits than responsible journalism.

For example, the systematic and illegal purging of many thousands of voters (mostly democrats) in Florida during the 000 presidential election was reported by BBC but given a complete miss by American mainstream media until months after President Bush’s inauguration. In an on-going lawsuit, two reporters accused FOX of firing them for their refusal to air a story containing inaccurate information. The story, describing the dangers of the widespread growth hormone use by dairy farmers, was ultimately slanted by FOX to protect its advertising revenues. While a lower court jury ruled in favor of the reporters, a Florida Appeals court later overturned the ruling on the grounds that it is technically not against any law to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast!

For the past decade, the U.S. media has been increasingly reluctant to question governmental policies, unless one were to consider Monica Lewinsky, which was and should have remained the domains of tabloids. Before Sep 11, the U.S. media was obsessed with Monica Lewinsky, then “Survivor”, followed by Chandra Levy. Journalists concerned about real reporting do not survive for long. Bob Parry, who uncovered the Iran-Contra scandal in the 180s, lost his job at the Associated Press. There was no mainstream-media exposure about the Niger-Uranium Scam until the search for WMDs in Iraq proved futile (although the forgery was widely reported on internet news websites months before the war began).

In post-11 America, important questions about American war on terrorism or even 11 have been suppressed in the name of patriotism. For example, the mainstream media dare not question about the lack of investigation into the abnormal purchase of put options on American and United Airlines’ stocks just before September 11. Politically Incorrect” talk show host, Bill Maher was fired for being politically incorrect when he commented that the U.S. was cowardly dropping bombs from high altitude. University professors have been threatened with dismissals and violence for their “non-patriotic” comments about governmental policies.

XXX’s media itself has been much Americanized locally produced shows (except perhaps “YYY”) reek of American influence. Indeed, we have to be careful not to fall into the same insular trap. This is difficult since our foreign news sources come partly from these media mega-corporations. Besides, the American media is not limited to its news. Hollywood movies are often stereotypical (subtly at best) and overly dramatic. While American History X brought across a strong anti-discrimination message, audiences might leave the cinema thinking that such extreme discrimination only belong to the societal fringes, rather than realizing how some of our common practices and ideas might create fertile breeding grounds for racial bigotry and extremism. For example, after the arrest of extremists in XXX, many XXX Muslims have been vocal in declaring their “moderateness”. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of drowning out voices of displeasure about our governmental pro-American stance (such as its support of the Iraq War), for fear of being labeled as extremists, thus alienating moderate anti-Bush Muslims.

However, the American influence is not limited to the media. XXX appears eager to imitate so-called American “virtues” without carefully considering whether they are necessarily to our benefits. Meanwhile, like the U.S., we, as a society has begun to equate social progress with economic growth (measured by GDP), which is of course untrue. There are thousands of unemployed homeless on the streets of New York, the center of global commerce; across America, police discrimination against blacks, profitable environmental destruction, unethical lucrative medical care coverage and privatized prison service continue to be neglected by a government obsessed with the war on terror and tax cuts for the rich. And yet, coincidentally or not, in economically poorer XXX, our societal problems are also less severe.

But we have to be careful, for we seem to be treading on the still-fresh footprints of America such as our growing income disparity and rising divorce rates. We must contemplate whether such societal problems are INEVITABLE in an economical structure that lauds and rewards individualism and profit maximization, which when practised to the extreme, become the baser qualities of human nature selfishness and greed. Sometime between independence day and 00, GDP has slowly taken prominence over social development. Our economy has become the end rather than the mean to societal growth; our people becoming mere numbers in the context of the much-touted globalized economy. While it is admirable that our government has demonstrated (or claimed) the ability to see the overall economic picture, to the public, especially the poorer folk through areas such as tax and transportation fees hike during the recent economic doldrums the government seems to have lost its personal and human touch.

There was a girl called lala who lived in a lala tree. Lala was a weird girl who lived in a house in a tree and she had blue walls. She was a strange person. Her tree was green. Do you like my essay? Essays are good. I am only writing this so that I can register. The registering thing is annoying. I want to know about climate and I have to think of things to write in this box because I am running out of ideas. Are you? I am. I do not like writing essays. I think they are rubbish. Tomorrow I am going to hand in my homework on climate which will be very fun. Do you think this is enough words? Im going to try registering now, bye. Thats really good, my essay is not yet two hundred and fifty words long. I am trying to write as many words as possible in here but it is proving to be very hard, dont you think? Lets see if this has enough words now. That is a shame, I have copied and pasted it into microsoft word and it is only one hundred and seventy seven words. I hope you like my essay. I think its really cool. I hope that soon I will have more words than needed. I wonder how many people are going to read this. Anesthetic is a drug used to induce a state of insensibility to pain. There are two different types of anesthetics. (Adams, 1) About 5,000 times a year, many patients will wake up during surgery and become awake of their surroundings they also notice the pain. ( Davis,1) Anesthesia is safer today than it has ever been. But it is still a high-risk business, so patients are suggested to ask to meet the provider in advance. (what to go over before going under, 1) Now a days the doctors can tell when a patient is about to wake up by a monitor that translate EEG waves from the brain into a single number with a scale of 1 to 100. Putting a patient to sleep is often referred to Anesthesia. But the simple description doesn’t begin to tell the delicate nature of the risky practice. If the patients medical problems are complex and the surgery is challenging, then the anesthesia couldn’t be very fun. If some surgery’s are quick and less painful and require less anesthesia, but some require more. An explanation of monitors, injections, and anesthetics will prove that anesthesia is not as dangerous or harmful as it uses to be before modern technology.

There are many different types of anesthetics. First there are general anesthetics. General anesthetics are given in the gas form, by inhalation. They lead to a state of insensibility. If a patient is given too much anesthesia then this

activities. Doctors previously used Nitrous Oxide, Ether, and Chloroform but now the only employed anesthetic of the three is Nitrous Oxide. Another widely used anesthetic is Halohane. The second is local anesthetics. Local

anesthetics locally block the nerve impulses. (Adams, 1) They are injected into the skin or the tissues, where they paralyze nerves. They injection sight is where surgery will take place. Within a dew minutes the area and the areas surrounding the injection sire become unable to feel pain. Cocaine was the first drug that was found to have a local anesthetic. Researchers found procaine, Lido Cain, and many others which are used often. Last but not least, other. Other types of anesthetics are Benzyl Alcohol which is a preservative in bacteria. (Clark, ) Dr. Skidmore recommended avoiding diphennydramine solution as an anesthetic. (Clark, ) Surface anesthetics are a surface painkilling solution such as gel or ointment to the skin. (source 6, 1) The three anesthetics are general, local and other.

Many doctors give anesthesia by injection. Injection is the best way to give anesthesia. The biggest problem with injections is pain at the spot of the injection. Some doctors use ice cubes for this because they are effective, quick and very cheap. Dr. Skidmore uses this method with the three to five year olds that he works with quite often. He uses the ice on children even though they

squirm and do not like the coldness. Of don’t for a minute or two it causes the area to turn a white color and so cold that you can inject the anesthesia into the area without any pain at all. He also recommends that you use the smaller

needle and you should also use the same area if you are giving multiple injections so that the patient only endures one painful stick from the needle.. One important thing about injections is the technique. “Make sure you are listening to patients. “ Dr. Skidmore (Clark, 1) said “If they say they feel a tingling to zinging sensation down their arm or running along their face, it may mean that you introduced the needle to the nerve.” (Clark, 1 and ) If you injected the anesthesia “withdraw the needle a little but out of the skin until that sensation goes away.” (Clark, ) Avoid wiggling the needle, that could lacerate a nerve. In some older books, it says to insert the needle directly into the forearm, where the nerves come out of the bone. “You want to infiltrate the area around the forearm, but in to the forearm.” (Clark, ) He added.

Since modern technology doctors and hospitals have been introduced to monitors. Monitors do many of things. They measure the depth of the anesthesia. For those patients who have high blood pressure and/or heart problems, the monitor allows the anesthesiologist to focus on the real issues unfolding inside their patients during surgery. The monitors help but letting the patient heals faster because it tells how much anesthesia to give the patient. There are about 700 hospitals across the nation that uses the monitors called

Bispectral Index Monitors. ( Davis, ) Anesthesiologists which use the monitors don’t need to rely on them too much because they need to be careful. Anesthesiologists which use the monitors say they save money and that their patients feel better faster after surgery. The monitors cost between $5,000 and $,000, depending on the amount the hospitals buys. ( Davis, ) With that expense that cost of the surgery increases to about $15 more. ( Davis, ) Anti-Nausea drugs that are used after surgery cost $40 per dose. ( Davis, ) Hospitals have been upgraded since they have been introduced to monitors.

Q

Part (A)

The type of competition that exists in the airline industry is an oligopolistic one. Oligopolisitic firms usually firms usually sell differentiated products or homogeneous products. Clearly, the airline industry may be providing a homogenous service of air flights, but differ in their departure and arrival destinations. Airline industry faces many barriers to entry. A few big firms, like Singapore International Airlines, Virgin, Emirates and many more, also usually dominate it.

The barriers of entry are usually restrictive into allowing new competitors to enter into the market. The issue of product complexity comes in when there is a necessity to provide consumers with efficient services, along with the airline service. As consumers need to learn a lot about the product before purchasing it, efficient services has to be provided to help consumers make an informative purchase. Certain firms fail to provide this service, thus are unable to enter into the market. Thus, airline firms usually set up information booths, provide baggage services and publish informative brochures, to make up for the product complexity.

Another barrier to entry is the presence of product proliferation. Though the product may be of one type, it is usually proliferated through increasing the variety as a barrier to entry, as new firms may not be able to fight with the diverse fashions of the similar product already available in the market. In terms of the airline industry, they provide a diversified type of airline service. We have the economy class type of airline service, the business class and many other types of differentiated airline services.

Another barrier of entry is also the recognition of the product. It may be so, that the product is so well recognized by the market that new firms are not able to meet up to the expectations of the consumers, thus are unable to enter into the industry. This is very true for the airline industry, as airline services are already well recognized in many countries, thus it makes it more difficult for a new competitor to enter.

Economies of scale is also another barrier to entry, in the way that new firms may not understand the economies of scale earned in the line of business, thus refuse to enter into the industry. For airline services, the economies of scale may be quite complicated and the new competitor may not be able to handle it.

Another feature of oligopoly is that there is also both price rigidity and non-price competition. We usually see the price of the different airline services being similar, depending on the destination of the flights. Also, on magazines and televisions, we see Singapore international Airlines, Emirates and the Malaysian Airlines advertising their airline services.

Thus, we can see how the airline industry is an oligopolistic sort of market structure.

Part (B)

Usually for firms facing bankruptcy, they have two microeconomic options to make, either face acquisition or shut down all operations. AS the fact that United Airlines is bankrupt, it certainly has no capability to pursue other options to salvage it.

Referring to shutdown conditions, if the firm is facing bankruptcy in the short run, as long as it is able to cover its average variable cost (AVC), it should continue production. Or else, it should shut down. In the long run, as AVC equals to total average cost (all costs becomes variable in the long run), firms should shut down if it fails to cover its total average cost.

From the graph, we can see that AC is higher than P=AR, which means the firm, is earning subnormal profit. This means that the firm has to consider whether its AVC is above P=AR. In the case of the graph, this means that the firm is able to cover its AVC. If United Airlines is facing this kind of a situation, it should continue production.

However, if in the long run, United Airlines is not able to cover its total average cost, as average fixed cost has become variable like average variable cost, the firm should shut down. Likewise, in the short run, if AVC is above P=AR, it should also shut down.

Or else, United Airlines can consider being acquired, or as a euphemism, choose to merge with a more competitive firm. Merger or acquisition can be seen as two or more separate firms coming into a single ownership. This includes, vertical integration where firms merge in the different stages of production, horizontal integration, where firms merge in the same stage of production, and conglomeration, where a firm merges with another of a totally different production line.

This can help bring many benefits to united Airlines, especially with the gaining of economies of scale and cost savings. The firms can even gain supernormal profits, to engage in innovation or even gaining monopoly power.

However, United Airlines can face conflicts in administrative matters and diseconomies of scale sets in much earlier than expected.

In conclusion, United Airlines should take into account its reputation and ability to cover AVC before making any decisions.
