While reading the essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, by Richard Rodriguez, I had to decide what kind of qualities he possessed while reading and writing that were described by “The Introduction”, by Bartholomae and Petrosky. I came to the conclusion that Rodriguez one of the qualities he possessed was that he was a “strong reader” by definition, because he combined reading, writing, thinking, and put them into other authors terms to see what he could or could not do (page ). Also, for the most part, he was a passive reader, because he absorbed such great amounts of information as he possibly could. I also think that he was geared at reading to find the main ideas and information in passages (page 6). I will show examples of the qualities mentioned above throughout the essay, and how Rodriguez showed traces of other qualities that Bartohoomae and Petrosky described.

I believe that B & P would describe Rodriguez was an passive reader for many reasons. He would be a very active participant in class by raising his hand and always making sure to have an organized thought to convey if he was called on. He listens to everything his teachers say, and applies them to his home life. For example, when he goes home after school he would hear his parents talking, and become angry because they were talking in ways his teachers discouraged. Rodriguez also makes a point that you can not be successful without determination and the help of others. If he was truly passive he would not need the help of others to help him succeed, he would have accomplished things on his own.

Question

After I researched the differences between an S and a C corporation, and after reading more of Kiyosaki’s book, I found myself wondering what it would take to form a corporation, and what the advantages would really be. My question therefore became, “What does forming a corporation entail, and is it really beneficial?”

Research

While searching on-line, I came across a website called MyCorporation.com. This is an internet site that provides services to those that want to form a corporation. It asks many helpful questions, and covers many of the advantages and disadvantages of corporations. However, the most helpful part of the site is that it explains many different business forms.

Buy cheap Corporations term paper

First and foremost, I decided to look at the advantages and disadvantages of a corporation because I thought I might already know how to form a corporation. The advantages that I found were as follows A corporation is a separate legal entity that exists under authority granted by state law. As a separate legal entity, a corporation is responsible for its own debts. Normally, shareholders, directors, and officers are not responsible for corporate liabilities. If the corporation suffers losses, the corporation itself must bear those losses to the extent of its own resources, and not the personal assets of the individual shareholders. A corporation is capable of continuing indefinitely (mycorporation.com). The disadvantages that are listed relate to the formalities that are involved in operating a corporation and are too numerous to list here.

When I began to look at how a corporation is formed I found that the process is quite simple…as long as you hire someone to help you. The order of events is quite long, and they must be followed. Also, the process is usually not a short one. Suffice it to say that it is not something that an individual would want to do alone.

Reflection

After researching corporations for the past couple of weeks, I have found that it not something in which I am extremely interested. The only reason I would use to validate the formation of a corporation is the tax benefits they provide. However, as an independent business owner or sole proprietor, I would probably be able to have many of the same benefits. The only left to give support to the formation of a corporation is the possibility of limited liability. While limited liability is nice, unless I have a large business with assets that I do not value as personal assets, I would probably not care about limited liability. I will keep looking, but it will take a lot for me to move towards a belief in the formation of a corporation.

Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) enables systems administrators and developers of scripts to easily query and manipulate directory service objects. Active Directory Service Interfaces abstract the capabilities of different directory services from different network vendors to present a single set of directory service interfaces for managing network resources. Administrators and developers can use ADSI to manage the resources in a directory service. ADSI enables administrators to automate common tasks such as adding users and groups, managing printers, and setting permissions on network resources. This enables the admnistrators to be more productive and focus their job skills on doing tasks that are not so time consuming and repetetive. Applications written to ADSI will work with any directory service that offers an ADSI provider. An example of this is the use of ADSI with applications that can access LDAP, NDS, the Active Directory service, and other directories with ADSI interface as long as the appropriate service providers are available. Providers enable communication between the server or client. ADSI supports the following; Windows NT Active Directory, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Windows000 Active Directory, Novell NetWare Directory Services (NDS), and NetWare bindery (NWCOMPAT).

Directory Exchange is a fully automated application which synchronises mail address directories of disparate office systems. All e-mail systems maintain user directories containing names, addresses and other attributes of recipients to whom mail may be sent. Recipients may or may not share the same post-office as the sender. They may have their post-office on a different LAN, use a different e-mail system, or even use a different platform. In general there are directories for every ‘node’ on every e-mail system in an enterprise. When new user information is added to a particular e-mail directory, associated e-mail directories also need to be updated. To do this manually is time consuming, error prone and is an administrative burden. Directory Exchange will provide an automatic solution.

Robert Louis Stevensons novel, Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, has been called a “perpetual masterpiece of psychological terror that sprang from the deepest crevices of Stevenson’s own subconscious -- a nightmare from which his wife awakened him” (Lombardi). The phrase Jekyll and Hyde is synonymous with mans internal war between good and evil (Auclair). Stevensons story of the kindly scientist who drinks a potion that transforms him into a stunted, evil version of himself is a story of horror, which preceded modern psychology.

Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory states that an individual’s personality is divided into three different parts the id, ego, and superego. The id consists of unethical, irrational, driving instincts for sexual gratification, aggression, and general physical and sensual pleasure. The superego represents the outer expectations forced on the personality by society and culture. The ego acts as the mediator between the impulses of the id and the superego. The ego allows the personality to cope with the inner and outer demands of its existence. The balance of these three parts determines a person’s personality (Stevenson 1). Freud’s theory explains that humans can be ruled by their hidden impulses and passions instead of their rational thoughts. The imbalance of the id, ego, and superego is reflected in the double life of Henry Jekyll.

In the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll discovers a way to separate his benevolent and malicious sides into two different individuals. While Henry Jekyll is an honest, respectable doctor Mr. Hyde is a younger but deformed man who indulges in filthy pleasures. Jekyll began experimenting in order to live a carefree lifestyle so he could fulfill his internal lusts and desires as Mr. Hyde without fear of tainting his own good name. Dr. Jekyll believes “…that man is not truly one, but two” and because of this he is able to live out his evil passions while maintaining his social stature (Stevenson 7).

Hyde’s aggressive instincts that caused him to trample a little girl and murder Sir Danvers Carew represent the id. Gradually, Hyde begins to dominate Jekyll to the point where he cannot control his transformations, and soon Jekyll feels guilty and responsible for Hyde’s actions. Jekyll represents the superego or conscious that causes guilt to enforce right and wrong. When Dr. Jekyll’s experiments fail, he is unable to separate the two different personalities. Since the ego’s function is to act as a mediator between the id and the superego its function is eliminated when Dr. Jekyll is incapable of controlling his transformations. If the ego does not exist, there is no separation between the id and the superego (Dury).

In some cases in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the id and the superego display the same characteristics. Freud once stated, “the normal man is not only far more immoral that he believes but also far more moral than he knows,” which implies that the unconscious id has its own principles, and therefore is not separate from one’s concious (Khan). There are many instances where Jekyll’s id does not escape his superego. Hyde shows traces of his conscious when he pays the family of the trampled girl for any damages he may have cause. His reaction to his violent behavior was characteristic of a Victorian gentleman. Hyde stated, “No gentleman but wishes to avoid a scene… name your figure” (Stevenson 10). He shows respect for others in society and pays off the girl’s family politely, which is uncharacteristic of a person that is controlled by the instincts of the id. Dr Jekyll displays characteristics of the id as he finds pleasure in the evil deeds of Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll stated, about his transformation,

I felt younger, lighter, happier in body; within I was conscious of a heady recklessness, a current of disordered sensual images running like a millrace in my fancy, a solution of the bonds of obligation, an unknown but not an innocent freedom of the soul. (Stevenson 8).

Dr. Jekyll has morals but he continues to allow Hyde, an individual lacking in moral and social skills, to carry out destructive acts. As Jekyll tries to control his id, the superego fails to counteract its desires and he cannot escape his self- destruction (Khan). In his final confession, Jekyll states, “My devil had long been cages, he came out roaring” (Stevenson ). In the double life of Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the id shows power over human personality. Dr. Jekyll cannot live his life resisting the unconscious desires of Hyde as well as his unacceptable behavior and evil nature. The more he wants to contain Hyde the more powerful Hyde becomes and the more he fights to emerge. Because Jekyll’s superego failed he cannot escape himself.

The personalities of Dr. Jekyll are dominated by the instincts of the id, which is always on the quest for pleasure and gratification of their needs. The id has a perception of its own, which controls the sinful behavior and feelings of Dr. Jekyll. The id can overcome the conscious thoughts and challenges the moral principles of the superego (Stevenson). In the personalities of Dr. Jekyll the ego is destroyed and cannot mediate between the id and the superego. Without the ego the concept of reality is lost and the id and superego are in direct conflict. (Stevenson). This conflict causes Dr. Jekyll to succumb to urges that leads to the destruction of his life; he can no longer control his transformations or Hyde’s actions. Instead he must surrender to the fact that Hyde is more powerful than he originally intended. Many individuals do not acknowledge signs of the id, but the id demands immediate satisfaction regardless of the circumstances and possible effects.

The personalities of the Dr. Jekyll reflect the unconscious desires and the continuous internal conflict between the id, ego, and superego. The three divisions of the mind are constantly trying to keep each other in check, for example one will neutralize its influence on behavior. Even though the superego resists the impulses of the id, it cannot hold back its demands for enjoyment. The id neutralizes and commands an individual to find out the hidden desires of the mind (Stevenson). The actions of Jekyll represent the deepest, darkest secrets of unconscious thought and how they manipulate the human mind. Henry Jekyll believes that he can create another human being to carry out his wicked urges.

The destruction of the ego affects a person’s ability to balance reason and passion. The dominance of passion over moral and social norms causes the downfall of Dr. Jekyll. Without a working conscience individuals cannot make their own decisions because they are driven by pure impulse. Humans receive more gratification from making a positive impact on society rather than living out desires that come from unconscious thought. Henry Jekyll strives to experience all the pleasures in life, but the with absence of genuine emotion and good intentions.

Through the study of Sally Morgan’s My Place, the documentary Captain Sarah’s Odyssey, The Door by Miroslav Holub and Chain of Hearts by Maureen McCarthey my ideas on changing self have developed and changed. I have realised that in order to change you need love and support from friends and family and that sometimes people need to change who they are in order to obtain their dreams/ goals. Sometimes a tragic and unexpected event can cause a person to change themselves. These ideas are represented through the use of various techniques such as humour, dialogue, poetic devices and sound techniques.

My Place by Sally Morgan is an autobiography/ biography in which we see Sally change several times throughout the book. Because Sally herself writes the book, we also see how Sally’s feelings and thoughts change. At the beginning of the book, we see how Sally frequently truanted from school. This is generally a bad thing but at times her mother encourages it. In these circumstances, we are shown the humorous side of Sally’s family because parents do generally not encourage this type of behaviour. Humour is regularly used throughout this novel to help lighten situations and give the reader a deeper insight into the family. Humour also helps to break up tense situations and because of this we are able to witness how the family reacts to situations with humour when many of the times the situations are actually quite serious. This humour that the family share allows them to grow closer to one another so they are able to cope with difficult situations.

An example of when humour is used in a difficult situation is when Sally’s Nan hoses down the children when a fire is threatening to burn the houses down. This is quite a serious and dangerous situation that shouldn’t have been taken lightly but the fact that Sally’s Nan automatically hoses down the children is quite humorous and causes the children less worry. “......Nan would line us all up and squirt us down with water.” The reader is surprised by Nan’s reaction but they are also able to smile at how naive Nan is to think that simply hosing down the animals and children would save them from being burnt.

The use of humour in the story gives a different entry point into the theme of changing self. All of the other entry points are serious and emotional so this technique stands out in the novel. Humour provides a simple link to changing self that everyone can relate to in a sense. It shows that in order to change the person you are, you need love to encourage the change. Without love there would be no humour and laughter in Sally’s family and Sally wouldn’t be able to change in the ways that she did.

The idea that love is needed in order to change is also represented in both Captain Sarah’s Odyssey and Chain of Hearts.

In Chain of Hearts the main character Sophie changes who she is drastically after a car accident where she killed her boyfriend Mihn. Sophie became withdrawn from her family and stayed in her bedroom where she constantly ate, causing herself to become overweight. The reason for this initial change was the accident, which left Sophie mentally scared. It was only when she was sent to her aunt’s place that she began the slow and painful recovery to a person that was bubbly and happy with whom she was. The only reason this final change occurred was because her family and new friends showed her love and support as well as understanding and encouragement. This novel once again developed my ideas on changing self as it showed that tragic events can change a person and that love and support can help in the healing and eventual change back to the person they were.

In the television documentary Captain Sarah’s Odyssey, the idea of love being a part of changing one’s self is represented many times throughout. Not only did Captain Sarah have the love of her family but she also had the love of her friends to help deal with her choices. While Sarah talks about changing from male to female the music in the background is soft and gentle which gives the viewer the idea that Sarah’s changing was helped and supported by the love that surrounded her. This same music is used again when Sarah talks about Andrew Duncan. Andrew was a “street kid” that Sarah helped by showing him that someone did love and care for him even if it wasn’t a family member. With help from Sarah Andrew was able to stay off alcohol and stop committing crimes. The music used in this documentary is very emotional and therefore arouses the emotions of the viewer. It also makes sure that the viewer is feeling the correct emotions at that point in the program.

Another sound technique used in the program is the use of sound effects. When Sarah is taking about the building of the ship, there are industrial noises in the background. This technique helps in reinforcing what Sarah is talking about and also enhances the messages that are sent to the viewers as it makes the documentary seem more interesting. By drawing the readers into the program by the use of different sound techniques, we are able to understand the messages easier and they also appeal to us better so we are able to see clearer that love and support is needed in order to change one’s self.

The way the dialogue is set gives an indication that the documentary is set as an interview. Dialogue allows everyone to connect with Sarah as it helps us see deeper into her thoughts and feelings because we hear her story from her. Using this technique allows Sarah to describe everything the way she wants, which means she can easily change the messages that are sent out to the viewer.

Dialogue is the most frequently used technique in My Place and is also one of the most important techniques. It shows the reader how the characters in the book talk and interact with each other and it also lets the characters express themselves. This allows the reader to paint a picture of each of Sally’s friends and family members. It also allows each person in the novel to give a personal account or idea. This allows the reader to get to know each character and in turn relate to them in their own ways. Because the language used in this novel is a mixture of English as well as Aboriginal it adds interest to the book because not many people have had the experience of listening or reading any type of Aboriginal language. It helps in giving the novel a sense of authenticity. Because dialogue is used so often it allows the reader to sympathise and eventually empathise with Sally and her family, which also helps to enhance the ideas of changing self.

Poetic devices are used inThe Door, which was written by Miroslav Holub. The use of repetition in this poem helps to reinforce the ideas of changing self in this poem. An example of repetition includes “Go and open the door”. The poem gives the reader the idea that in order to change yourself you have to “open the door”. The door is a symbol of opening up to opportunities when they come along. The composer is trying to persuade the other person in the poem to open the door. By having the door closed it is a symbol of the person being closed-minded and afraid of new things that could arise. When the door is finally opened, new situations are experienced and the fog of doubt is cleared up. We are first introduced to Juliet during the party scene, our initial impressions lead us

to believe that she is young and attractive. Already we are shown that Juliet is a

romantic as she refuses her mothers proposal of marriage to Paris and explains that

she will only be willing to marry for love. Juliet attracts a large amount of positive

attention and seems to hold a certain aura about her, this is often reflected in the

language she uses. Her words are often graceful and frequently playful she comes

across as quite angelic.

Juliet holds a strong bond with the nurse. Their relationship is displayed in quite an

affectionate and gentle way. The nurse clearly adores Juliet and sees her as a

daughter. She frequently praises her and it is clear the two characters are very close.

Thou wast the prettiest babe that eeer I nursed and I might live to see thee married

once, I have my wish.

We begin to see more of Juliets dreamy and Romantic side when she meets Romeo.

The two characters are clearly both attracted to one another instantly they both

become immediately intimate. Juliet is love struck, the language she uses becomes

more flowery and romantic. We are shown very clearly that she is in love. We also

become aware of how quickly she becomes dependant on Romeo, immediately after

meeting she says my grave is like to be my wedding bed this refers to if Romeo was

to be married. Although it becomes more evident further on in the play, we are given

signs that Juliet does not think that blood should be thicker than water. The two

families feud causes Juliet much grief Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or if

thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and Ill no longer be a Capulet Tis but my name

that is my enemy My only love sprang from my only hate. It is clear Romeos

affections for Juliet are just as strong Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear For I

In the January 001 issue of Ladies Home Journal on page 74 an article called Mom, Am I Fat? written by Sharon Epel addresses the trouble with the new generation of preschool and elementary school aged children who think thin is beautiful and often come home to ask, “Mom, Am I Fat?” Across the country, younger and younger children are scrutinizing their bodies and finding fault, often with alarming ramifications. Children as young as five are dieting and skipping meals, and eating disorders are now becoming childhood diseases.

In the last decade, children as young as eight have been treated for eating disorders. While such cases are rare, experts agree that anorexia and bulimia are becoming child diseases. Many children begin disliking their bodies before the have started school.

The media has a powerful effect in influencing young children. The majority of characters on shows that eight- to twelve-year-old girls watch, and pop stars such as Christina Aguilera are all very thin. Boys get their share of unrealistic images, too, from the latest Tarzan to characters on video games, such as Duke Nukem. The new G.I. Joe’s biceps would measure twenty-six inches if scaled to human size, dwarfing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reported twenty-two inches.

At the same time though thirteen percent of American children are overweight, compared to just five percent in the 160’s. Some experts suspect that this trend may be contributing to the children’s concerns. “For children it is stigmatizing to be fat,” says Barbara J. Howard, M.D. In one study, children were shown pictures of heavy children and children in wheelchairs and were asked with whom they would rather be friends with. They preferred the disabled children.

In today’s society there is a growing number of young children fixated on their body image. The American culture believes that the body is perfectible, and that message is being conveyed to children at a very young age. With so many children feeling inadequate, in terms of development and appearance, eating disorders are now becoming a childhood disease.

Dante Alighieris Inferno depicts Dante in the role of a man on a spiritual journey in pursuit of salvation. Along the way he encounters various historical and mythological figures whose stories help Dante realize the consequences of sin. Accompanying him is the poet Virgil, whose guidance will help Dante earn his redemption.

At the beginning of Inferno, Dante found himself in a sunless wood because he had wandered from the narrow path. [Canto I, ln.] The narrow path represents a righteous and holy lifestyle, and the sunless wood represents the state of Dantes life at that time disorderly, dark, and depressing. The physical and spiritual effects of sin become apparent in Canto One, where Dante is dead with fatigue and reduced to dragging his body with his right leg always lower as [he] climbed. [Canto I, ln.] This symbolizes how the weight of sin can impede the spiritual journey.

In order for Dante to return to his former piousness, Virgil must help him develope a strictness of his moral senses and a scorn for sinners. This is evidenced by Virgils teachings throughout their journey. An example of this can be found in Canto Eight, where Dante verbally attacks a dead soul named Filippo Argenti and is praised by Virgil with, What worthy indignation! [Canto VIII, ln.4] Another example would be found in Canto Twenty, when Dante expresses his greif over the suffering around him and is chastised by Virgil with Are you some sort of fool? / Pity must die that piety may live! [Canto XX, ln.6, 7] This means that in order for Dante to become holier, he must realize that they deserve their punishments.

Virgils teachings show a definate impact on Dantes morality. His attitude and behavior towards Hells residents changes significantly the time he enters to when he leaves. Because he too was a sinner, Dante could relate to their stories and felt sympathy for them. Dante was particularly sympathetic towards a pair of lovers he and Virgil meet in Canto Five, whom he described as being like doves with steady wings outstretched. [Canto V, ln.71] In fact, Dante is so sensitive to their tale that he fainted because he was overwhelmed by the tragedy of it. By the time Dante arrives at Circle Eight in Canto Eighteen, his opinion of the sinners has changed to utter contempt, describing one woman as a disheveled bitch. [Canto XVIII, ln.11] This contempt is manifested in physical violence woards the end of their journey, in Canto Thirty-Two, where Dante attacks the soul of Bocca delgi Abati simply for not answering him.

We know that Dante has finally shed his skin as a sinner when they emerge from Hell and he saw once more the stars. [Canto XXXIV, ln.] Dantes exit from Hell symbolizes the purging of his ins and how he has now acheived something of a saintlike status. The significance of the stars is they represent Gods love, hope, and divinity. And being able to see them represents how Dante is once again on the narrow way. Supporting the idea that stars are symbols of divinity comes from Canto Eleven, when Virgil refers to the constellations for guidance. This suggests God is using the stars to communicate with Virgil. Similarly in Canto Seven, Virgil causes them to cut short their visit because of the locations of the stars.

Gene Forresters difficult journey towards maturity and the adult

world is a main focus of the novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles.

Genes journey begins the moment he pushes Phineas from the tree and

the process continues until he visits the tree fifteen years later.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on A Separate Peace - Gene's Journey

essay writing service

Throughout this time, Gene must become self-aware, face reality and

the future, confront his problems, as well as forgive and accept the

person that he is. With the jouncing of the limb, Gene realizes his

problems and the true person he is inside. Fifteen years later, when

revisiting the tree, he finally accepts and forgives himself. This

journey is a long and painful one. At the end of this long and winding

road filled with ditches, difficulties and problems, Gene emerges a

mature adult.

Gene jounces the limb and causes Finnys fall and at that moment

becomes aware of his inner-self and learns of his true feelings. This

revelation comes to him back in his room before he and Finny leave for

the tree. It surrounds him with the shock of his true self until he

finally reacts by jouncing the limb. Up in the tree, before the two

friends are about to make their double-jump, Gene sees Finny in this

new light. He realizes that Finny feels no jealousy or hatred towards

him and that Finny is indeed perfect in every way. Gene becomes aware

that only he is the jealous one. He learns of his animosity and that

he really is a savage underneath. Over a long period of time Gene

had been denying his feelings of hatred towards Finny, saying that it

was normal for him to feel this way. Now all of the feelings come back

to him and he sees how terrible he really is. The realization that

these feelings are one-sided causes Gene to to fall dramatically in

comparison to Finny (he paints himself black for these feelings and

because Finny doesnt share them, he puts a halo around Finnys head),

concludes with the neccessity for Finny to be brought down to his

level, and results with Gene jouncing the limb.

After the realization of the person he truly is, in his room and

up in the tree, Gene must now confront his problems, face reality,

and deal with the future. He must learn that communication is very

important in a relationship and that he must express himself instead

of keeping his feelings inside, as he had always done with Finny. He

must learn to listen to himself rather than to others. These were just

a few of the many problems there were in his relationship with Finny.

He must face reality and acknowledge the fact that he isnt as great

as Finny, that he is his own individual person and that Finny isnt as

perfect as he thought. Gene must accept the guilt for Finnys

difficulties after his injury and must help Finny as a punishment and

act of repentence for his deed. Gene does this by giving a part of

himself to Finny as we see with the case of sports throughout the

rest of the novel - how Gene becomes Finny when it comes to sports.

Although the above are all of great importance, the greatest hurdle

Gene must overcome is learning to live with what hes done. This

painful step is the one which will allow him to completely mature.

The final stage of Genes maturation is his self-acceptence and

self-forgivness. He has to accept that he isnt perfect and that he,

like any other normal being (even Finny), has faults. Accepting that

his innocence has been lost helps Gene move on into another part of

his life and realize that he can never return to the days of his

innocent youth again. He can now become a man, enter the war and adult

world and leave his youth behind. Forgiving himself is the step which

allows Gene to lead a normal life and enter society. He must finally

forgive himself completely for his blind act and allow himself to

come in out of the rain. By accepting as well as forgiving the

person that he is, Gene enables himself to move on and join the adult

world.

Genes maturation is long, painful. It is a painful and difficult

process that reveals a darker side of Gene that he doesnt

neccessarily wish to see. However painful, Gene is made a better

person during his maturation through his suffering. Through

his pain and awful revalations about himself, Gene matures from an

insecure child to a self-knowledgable adult.

For my essay on poetic comparison and contrast, I have chosen “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” by W.E.B. Du Bois, and “The Ex-Basketball Player” by John Updike. Both poems are written in the free verse style of poetry, use a great deal of imagery, and though in a very different context, speak of a man’s accomplishments in life. Both are great poems that in ways are quite different, but at the same time share some splendid similarities.

Both poems are written in free verse. There is no discernible pattern, rhythm, or rhyme scheme; but as we all know, those characteristics do no have to be present to constitute a poem. W.E.B. Du Bois chose the repetition of the phrase “I’ve known rivers” in his poem for effect in relation to the title whereas John Updike selected a more plainly formatted “story” scheme. “The Ex-Basketball Player” however, clearly has a little more physical structure. Except for the last stanza, Updike obviously decided on a five-line stanza format. “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” on the other hand is a little more sporadic with the setup of one line, two lines, six lines, one line, one line, one line.

Imagery is definitely used in both poems as well. While it sticks out quite a bit in Updike’s poem, the outstanding use of imagery is quite profound in Du Bois’s poem. With lines like “I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins,” and “My soul has grown deep like the rivers,” you cannot help but get sucked into the poem itself. Such proficient descriptiveness can practically put right there on the Euphrates, the Nile, and the Congo along with him. Due to the fact that I love the game of basketball, I personally got the same effect from Updike’s poem without the abundance of those intricate descriptions. Even simpler lines such as “The ball loved Flick.” “His hands were like wild birds,” and “As a gag, he dribbles an inner tube, But most of us remember anyway,” you completely understand what is going on. I will even go so far as to say that you can sympathize with Flick and nearly remember watching him play yourself.

Both poems are about a man and something he has accomplished in his lifetime. For W.E.B. Du Bois, it is the cleansing experience of traveling the world and being one with it’s mighty rivers. It is about a seasoned individual with undoubtedly more to say than just the few lines of the poem and has lived a meaningful, fulfilled life. Flick on the other hand from John Updike’s poem is somewhat of a fallen but not forgotten hero. Also a seasoned individual who somehow went from being a high school basketball star to “selling gas” and “changing flats” at the local service station and playing pinball at the diner in his off time. Other than the respect of some of those who still remember, all Flick has left are his memories.

To close, expression of self through written text is an awesome form of art. I am a huge music lover so it is not hard for me interpret and relate to a lot of poetry. Both of these poems, so similar, yet so different, were a great read. I hope that my own personal insight could shed a little light on your interpretation of these poems as well as others.

I think that the war in which William Simpson died in like all wars

There was a variety of choices on where to go, but none of them interests me except for one that I have not tried yet, and that was ‘Rafts and river journeys’ in the Amazon river, Brazil. I have never, in my life, experienced river journeys and I heard it could be a lot of fun and dangerous so I can face my fears.

My best friend, Mike, and I went on a first class ticket in Brasilia Airlines that was very comfortable for a six-hour trip. As we landed on the capital of Brazil, Brasilia we didn’t imagine that this city can be strikingly beautiful, and fortunately is a lot better than Jeddah. We then met our raft experts in the airport. They were both female, which was really unexpected, because the experts are usually male, well one of them is called Julia and the other one’s called Lavita, I find Lavita very attractive. She had a tall, fit body, long blonde hair and a face more beautiful than Cindy Crawford. They took us to the city. The city had unspoiled landscapes, different types of antique markets around a distinctive building, there were several skyscrapers in the middle of the city, but that didn’t spoil the scenery, if you were in the middle of the city you would see lime-green mountains at a very long distance. They drove us to their camp which was far out of the city and nearby the Amazon River. The campsite was in a charming location, along the campsite was pale green bushes around the campsite, caravans just beside the entrance was very big because it is used for their office, a small lake can be seen just a few hundred meters beside the camp for us to practice, there is an exotic view if you looked on top of the small hill, it was as if you were on top of the world.

Lavita firstly showed us to our small white caravans for us to unpack. She then took both of us to have a small meeting in the middle of the camp. She began the conversation with us on the rules and safety skill on the river journey. She also explains that we were going to start the journey in the morning, so this means that we have to sleep very early, which was good for me because I didn’t sleep for the whole day. After relaxing for half an hour in our caravan, we gathered around the wooden table to make dinner. While eating, Julia had a longer talk, explaining what goods to use on the raft and what we need to wear, all the equipment you need is a good pair of trainers, a life jacket on over an ordinary shirt, shorts which passes down your knee and a safety helmet provided by them. It was getting late and there was not much electricity in there, so if you exit the caravan it would be pitch dark. So we had to sleep, I didn’t get much sleep at all because I’m not use to sleeping without air conditions and in additions I had a lot of rose red lumps of mosquito bites. We woke up early in the morning and packed everything necessarily needed for the journey, put on the equipment and ready to go.

The atmosphere was lively and, warm and friendly. We walked a few hundred meters to come across the small lake and I was in a bustling mood. We laid our rafts on the lake and began practicing, on how to stroke and paddle across the lake and back. We did this until we knew the basic learning of how to paddle on rafts. So we got out of the lake and head to the river. We walked through the green path filled with different types of plants and trees. At last we reached there in an hour, the scenery was very tropical, it is what you would imagine of a tropical place. The river was surrounding by golden yellow, banana trees. We helped them lay the raft on the bank of the river. We all got on it, one by one, to prevent the raft to capsize and sink. As we all got on the raft carefully, Julia quickly grabbed our paddles for us, so we can paddle it along the current of the river. I felt too excited at first. However the more time we paddled along the river the faster it goes down the river, which can be seriously dangerous, because we lost control of the raft and that we kept on bumping on to rocks, which can split open our raft. The current of the river was getting more faster as I was getting more worried that if we could be able to do this. More rocks was in our way, we manage to paddle pass it, until there was a small waterfall up ahead. Lavita and Julia was over confidence that they can do this, but my heart sunk and I had a weird feeling in my stomach to show how scared I was. Before reaching the waterfall, a small rock was in our way, which we didn’t realize at first, this capsized out raft over the waterfall. So this looked like as if we were flying. We all flew out of the raft managing to escape the current of the river to swim to the bank of the river. Luckily nobody got hurt; I quickly grabbed hold of the raft and brought it to the bank of river. We flipped the raft upright and paddled our way until we came across a small village.

The village was strangely quiet when we came. The houses were next to the bridge, which are pale-colored with leafy green painted shutters. The villagers welcomed Lavita and Julia, because they knew them from a long time, so then they introduced us to the villagers. We began to rest for a while for around forty-five minutes. So we continued our journey along the calm river. We just kept on the indigo-blue river, which fishes can be seen clearly in the river, and enjoying the view of the jungle, peacefully to the end. We reached to an open area of fields on where to end the journey, where we met Lavita’s husband. But in a way I was jealous. Her husband took all of us in his jeep, to travel all the way back to the campsite, so we can relax for the rest of the day and make conversations. The next day, we went back to the city and visited all kinds of place like the markets; eat in a high class of restaurant. The market was full of people. The market was large outdoor market by the docks with a pungent fishy smell. I only bought souvenirs of the country. The reason why I like the market is the light-hearted, bustling atmosphere and the cheerful sounds of stallholders calling to each other. Seagulls soar around the docks. It was getting late because we need to take the five o’clock flight back to Jeddah. So we thank Lavita and Julia for everything and left the country to go back.

I recommend this journey to anyone who is in the mood for quite dangerous journey. This can also be a spectacular adventure for anyone had never experience river journeys in their life, or to have the wildest adventure on rafts. This can reduce their stress with their everyday job and helps them take action in the adventure. I had a terrific adventure and I think I recommend it to everyone

It was still a shame you couldn’t be there with us.

Ladies and Gentlemen

CONSUMERISM

Those who “know that enough is enough”, goes the Chinese proverb, “will always have enough”. For consumerism, there is no such thing as enough. The language of consumerism is the language of hunger. Appetite for products must be created.

As people, we have become materialistic in this modern day world. This is how it all starts LOVE ME - LOVE MY CAR. To me the thing about old people is that everything about them gets smaller. You know, their bodies get smaller.., they move into smaller places, they sleep less time, they eat smaller meals...except the car. The older they get, the bigger their car gets. Theyre all driving these Detroit Behemoths. Ive never understood that. And old people have a way of backing out of the driveway. They don’t turn form side to side. Their attitude is Im old and I’m coming back.” ‘ I have been around a while, now’ You watch out for me buddy. And then once they get out their they drive so slowly. Bruce Dawe criticizes the culture of consumerism in western society, in his poem “Abandonment of Autos”. The car is a status symbol. People are prepared to make sacrifices in order to obtain their ‘dream car’. Dawe looks at the ‘throwaway’ society, where consumer goods are designed to stop working so they will be replaced with a new version of the same object. The abandonment of the car for a new item suggests the expansion of consumerism throughout western society. Dawe refers to a decline in the true value of emotions on our consumer society, where we give the value of emotions in our consumer society, where we give the same emotional value to a car and a living creature.

In contrast, Caroline Worton’s poem “The Arab’s Farewell to His Steed”, the Arab finally cannot sell his horse; ‘they tempted me, my beautiful! But I have loved too long, I fling them back their gold’. The recovery of the horse, the final proof that the Arab does the sense the fitness? of things, that he will not give up the animal which has served him so faithfully, but in Dawe’s poem, this is deliberate. “If the driver loved his car, he wouldn’t have abandoned it in the streets”.

Not only the car, but Television, is the ultimate consumer accessory. I hate these public service TV spots where they try to get you to sign your organ donor card on your license. ‘Little Jimmy here needs an organ transplant. He can’t do anything but wait, and hope for you to do something really stupid. So sign that card and you know, maybe start thinking about that high powered motorbike for yourself. There’s nothing like feeling that wind whipping through your hair, no helmet, flying down the road. Similarly, Dawe describes the continuing situation of misunderstanding of the East by Westerners. He sees this as proof, that the earth is ‘not so- good’ an understatement by which he means that it is in fact, profoundly evil. The Not So Good Earth, where the containment of the Chinese disaster to the television screen and to dramatic segments between commercials ensures that the Western family consuming it are kept entertained and not disturbed by the human tragedy which is behind the dramatic screens footage. Television is one of the main promoters of the consumer culture, through advertising.

T.V has so much power. The cartoon by Andy Warhol “Shopping is more American, than thinking” is about how a little boy sees and ad on TV and without even thinking goes out to buy the product. Our society has become immoral, where we don’t think and head out to buy it straight away. It is surprising that our need to consume and fix things has not realized it yet. Advertising is the form of psychological manipulation, encouraging people to see spending as a high priority. The national and individual differences between people tend to blur because of the modern consumerist ‘ethic’ , and because American producers have the economic dominance, we are increasingly becoming Americanized. Dawe presents the poem Americanized in the form of mother/son relationship. The mother America has so much absorbed popular culture that she doesn’t allow her natural instincts any say. She wont let her child out to play, to be normal. She keeps him ‘sheltered’ in an artificial world of her making, a pale reflection of the mass media consumerist world of TV. The world is beginning to look like an American strip mall, complete with KFC, Pizza Hut and the Golden Arches.

Picture a world, where material possessions count for nothing, everyone is equal and life revolves around love and peace. Seem Unrealistic? Well that’s when compared with the world. We are living in the 0th century, where we eat , when we’re not hungry, drink when we are not thirsty. We buy what we don’t need and throw away everything that’s useful. Our present culture, however specializes in inflaming endless lust for possessions with advertisements that constantly convince us that we need MORE. We are convinced that we must keep with or even go better than our neighbors. So we buy another dress, sports jacket, or sports car and thereby force the standard of living. “Our world has enough for each person’s need, but not for his greed”.

Executive summary

Since 171Greenpeace has become one of the world’s largest environment activists. This Report will go into deal about several aspects of information management within the company, which have brought the organization to its successes it is today by stirring it away form failure. Information monitoring, information as a resource, and professional responsibilities will be the focus topics that are covered in this report.

Information has been retrieved from various sources in order to find how and to what extent Greenpeace manages their organization’s information. Greenpeace’s 00 annual has been published, both in print as well as electronically through the Greenpeace Internet site. Among other sources, substantial amounts of information were found in relation to Greenpeace and how they achieve their mission.

Greenpeace is an independent, campaigning organization that uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and force solutions for a green and peaceful future. Greenpeaces goal is to ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity. (Greenpeace 00)

It was found that Greenpeace deals with information on all three levels of information management (technically, analytically and strategically). Greenpeace is well aware of their general and operating environment, including Societal, Political, Production and Organizational areas. Greenpeace is on the way to make this world safer and environmentally friendly place.

Introduction

Greenpeace is an organization of information. It is important to see how Greenpeace is aware of the importance and the depth of information management needed. The objectives of this report is to consider, research and evaluate aspects of information management of the organization with respects to

· Information as a resource

· Information policy

· Information monitoring and environmental scanning

These areas are to be assed because of there importance to an organizations success. If these aspects of information management are not dealt with sufficiently it can have a detrimental effect on the organization ability function sufficiently and economically.

Greenpeace’s annual report, web site and along with other publications of data provides evidence of their attitude towards information management. Their support for professional responsibility is seen through Greenpeace’s publications as well as their interpreted overall nature. General and Operating environment scanning plays a key role in the organizations failure or success, this area will also be investigated to find out if and how they play a role in Greenpeace.

1. Information management within Greenpeace

Greenpeace in an organization devoted to information, “INFORMATION IS POWER” (Greenpeace 00). Its objectives and aims are to inform the world’s population on current and dangerous environmental issues.(Greenpeace 00)

Information management is a proven multi-disciplinary strategy, which applies sound management principles to the life cycle of an organizations information resources. (Pemberton 000)

The information life cycle includes creation, evaluation, acquisition, organization, representation, control, dissemination, use, protection, and ultimate disposition of information whatever the format or medium and whether of internal or external origins. (Pemberton 000)

There are three levels that information management can be categorized into, these are Technical, Analytical and Strategic

The technical level deals with day-to-day management e.g. maintaining and operating online databases. At the Analytical level, involves research and investigation, evaluation and assessment, where as the strategic level is based on analyzing and developing information policies (Diner 1). Greenpeace is a large international organization, which relies on information management at all three levels to keep up with the received, distribution and storage of important information.

1.1 Strategic Level

Greenpeace, is based on information and directing it to facilitate the needs and goals that the organizations wishes to achieve.

Greenpeace has three levels of strategic activities; the first is in spreading global and local interests to members, subscribers and the community. Secondly, since Greenpeace is closely associated to a political party “the greens” means it also has its information framework as any other political party(Adept 00). The third activity that Greenpeace has to deal with is the strategic amalgamation of both environmental activities, information and with the running by policies of a political system.

As Greenpeace grows they continue to collect and study information statistics valuable to their success. They must develop new and refurbish old ways of information research, storage, with integration of both methods to give them complete and accessible information for new ideas.

Greenpeace thoroughly documents information resources at all activities in the strategic level through different publications, virtual or print, which are easily accessible by the public.

1. Analytical Level

The analytical level is phased on delving into dominions of research and investigation. The information management professionals have a key role at this level in the studies of feasibility, proving viability, assessing patrons and user needs and other important functions in the organization. The analytical level is one of the major parts of Greenpeace’s information management. Since Greenpeace is fondly an organization of information, researching and investigation is a main concern and need.

Decisions are concluded using stimulus such as organizations records e.g. databases, financial summaries and other related data, this is also known as environmental scanning which will be covered later in the report. The organization also uses external sources, (other governmental and support organizations) this reflects in their absorption into the population as effective as possible.

Technology advancement is a great importance to Greenpeace’s integration but this area also administers to a major part for why, Greenpeace is an active organization, as technology brings new environmental issues.

1. Technical level

The Technical level is about managing and directing information facilities, systems and services(Diner 1).

Greenpeace shows their importance to information as a resource, as well as the up keeping of their records, through their websites, annual report and other hard copy productions.

Greenpeace has several web sites from local (www.greenpeace.org.au) to international (www.greenpeace.org) to any other organization location, Chile (www.greenpeace.cl/). These sites give publications of interest, up and coming campaigns, annual reports and other information concerned with Greenpeace.

1. the Value of information as an resource to Greenpeace

The three levels in the information management process are very important to Greenpeace. As an environmental political organization, it is constantly changing and improving information updates as a data resource, to keep the population updated on current issues that need to be addressed. The main place of publication is in the form of their website, this allows people from all over the world being able to view Greenpeace’s information as a resource.

“INFORMATION IS POWER” (Greenpeace 00).

Company’s and the Individual’s professional Responsibility

.1 Company’s professional Responsibility

One of the major responsibilities of Greenpeace’s professionalism is the ability to avoid selection bias. In the course of the Information professionals (IP’s) work they routinely make different selections at the various stages of the information life cycle that determines the effect and the extent to which materials are preserved, presented, or made known to others, these activities and value-laden, with the shadow of biasness on a prevailing point of view. This is on of the hardest areas for IP’s to over come, this is because it is usually unintentional, unreported and is difficult to detect by clients and other IP’s because it is often socially determined and validated (mason 15).

This area is important to Greenpeace because it is in a constant movement of information, which is published for supporters and public to read. This information that is gathered, is also used by the organization to start and continue campaigns, If there were to be bias or corrupt view it could put the organization’s mission statement into disarray . It could give the wrong or misleading information to gain support for Greenpeace, which is againsed the political party legislation.

“Greenpeace is an independent, campaigning organization that uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and force solutions for a green and peaceful future. Greenpeaces goal is to ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity.” (Greenpeace 00)

. Individuals Professional responsibility

A particular job in Greenpeace’s organization is the media officer, which is situated in the board of directors. This job includes keeping up with campaigns throughout the vast Pacific region, devising media strategies to communicate the Greenpeace message and dealing with constant public queries(Greenpeace 00). This position in the organization has a very high responsibility for information professionalism. The media officer needs to present Greenpeace’s messages as well as information to public queries with out a bias view, that is true and not misleading.

. Environmental scanning

“Environmental scanning is the acquisition and use of information about events, trends, and relationships in an organizations external environment, the knowledge of which would assist management in planning the organizations future course of action”. (Choo & Auster, 1)

.1 modules and 4

(See appendix 1)

. General and operating environments

General environments

Information about General environments is very useful for an organization to help set them in the right direction. Some of these environments of information are;

· Societal “information such as demographics relating to population movements, life expectancies, consumer activism, environmental awareness and leisure utilization.”

(Middleton 00)

And

· Political “information relating to potential changes of government, and regulatory framework for such matters as trade, employment and financial services.” (Middleton 00)

Societal There is one area of the societal environment that looks at environmental awareness. This is the fundamental reason why Greenpeace is up and active in the world, to inform the world of environmental issues

Political Greenpeace also has a connection in the political system, with the political party the “green’s”. This makes the organization concerned with the political environment and changes that occur.

Operating Environments

The operating environment focuses on information about organizations competitors. Some of these environments are

· Production ”such as anything to do with product range and evaluation, quality control, packaging, delivery, production capacity, and breakdown tolerance.”

(Middleton 00)

And

· Organization “such as ownership, control and management structure, extent of decentralization, directors, links with other companies, facilities, financing, and asset return.” (Middleton 00)

Production The Complete spectrum of production environments of all companies are closely look at by Greenpeace, this is in case of an environmental issue that needs to be addressed, which the organization believes to be wrong.

Organizational This area of information researching is used to give options, examples and other related data to help direct the management of Greenpeace.

. Competitive information from databases

Greenpeace could use wide variety of databases, to gain information for selected environmental scanning. The Environmental Abstracts (EVA) and the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) are both quality databases for the organization’s needs.

EVA

The EVA has Coverage from 187 to the present, it stores over 17,400 records (total in 18). EPA Victoria Library produces this database. The Source documents are selected journal articles from approximately 600 journals published in Australia and overseas. EVA’s data base coverage includes air pollution and quality, sustainable development, salinity, environmental protection and management, hazardous wastes, etc. There are many different ways that you can search the data base to find relevant information these include Searching for a Descriptor Using the Index, Searching Using Operators, searching using descriptors, etc.

This database could be useful to Greenpeace to find out about environmental issues that the organization might have not known about yet.

AustLII

The Australasian Legal Information Institute is one of the biggest sources of legal materials and information on the Internet. It has over .5 gigabytes of raw text materials and about .5 of a million searchable documents. AustLII publishes public legal information that is, primary legal materials (legislation, treaties and decisions of courts and tribunals); and secondary legal materials created by public bodies for purposes of public access (law reform and royal commission reports etc). It has a user-friendly Graphic user interface that helps you through different types of searching.

AustLII would be a good database for green peace to find out different legislation for environmental issue, in relation to reporting a breach of legislation or acting to get recommendations for new legislation.
