The Crucible

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a story of the witch hunts and trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts during the 17th century. Throughout the book many themes are developed. One of the major themes is dishonesty. This theme is pervasive. With all of the drama that surrounds the trials, the characters begin to accuse each other of being witches, whether they believe they are or not. Many people lie about events to boost their reputations. Every one is afraid of being accused of being a witch so that lie to protect themselves. Three main characters that contribute to show how the theme of dishonesty is developed throughout the book are Reverend Parris, John Proctor and Abigail Williams.

Salem’s minister Reverend Parris is paranoid that his niece is not being honest with him about what happened in the forest. Reverend Parris fears that Abigail “trafficked with spirits.”(10)

If Abigail is lying and Parris’ “enemies”(10) find out “they will ruin [me] with it.” (10) This shows how dishonesty (in the form of a little white lie) can seem innocent but can cause a lot of trouble. Abigail’s denial of being involved with witchcraft could cause Reverend Parris to loose his pulpit, and possibly his life. This is just one of the initial incidents that show how the theme of dishonesty is developed in the book..

John Proctor also fears his name will be tarnished if anyone finds out about his affair with Abigail, Parris’ niece. John Proctor is a stern man. He knows that Abigail is lying about what

happened in the forest. Proctor has “good reason the think before [I] charge [s] fraud on Abigail.”(5) Proctor doesn’t say anything because he doesn’t want Abigail to expose his secret. In the end he lies about Abigail and says “ I lie and sign myself to lies”, “I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang.”(1) though Proctor dies knowing that he lied, he dies happy because he did his best to keep his name clean.

Abigail lied to everyone about almost everything. She is the source of all evil in the book . She is the one that convinced Tituba, her uncle’s slave from Barbados, to preform the witchcraft in the forest in the first place. Then she (Abigail) denies that the forest incident even happened at all. Abigail says “we did dance uncle; let you tell them I confessed it- and I’ll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speaken of witchcraft.”() “We never conjured spirits”(10) She lied to her uncle. Then she threatened the girls who were going to “tell on her” that if “either of [you] breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, [I] will come to you in the black of some terrible night.”(1) If it wasn’t for Abigail’s dishonesty the whole situation might never have occurred.

The critical theme in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is dishonesty. Reverend Parris is afraid his niece isn’t being honest. John Proctor fears his name will be tainted if anyone finds out about his affair. Abigail is the main cause of all the commotion and the one who lies the most. She is the center of the storm. If everyone would have just been honest, a large portion of the hysteria might have been alleviated. The one theme of dishonesty developed in The Crucible is pervasive, Reverend Parris, John Proctor, and Abigail Williams embody this through out the story.
