aMacBeth - Disastrous Attributes


Character or fate. Which of these two forces (external or internal) led to the downward fall of a great military hero and worthy Thane, Macbeth, turned evil and murderous when led astray by the prophecies of three old witches? Some people argue that Macbeth is the victim of fate, while others argue that his character decides his downfall. The argument for fate is strongly led by the actions of others, with Lady Macbeth being the prime influence on Macbeth. While the opposition is led by Macbeth’s troubled conscience, his own internal conflict and his hamartia. It is clearly visible that Macbeth’s own character is at fault for his tragic downfall. It is the opinion of many, that Macbeth is a victim of fate. These critics state that Macbeth is heavily influenced by his overpowering wife, Lady Macbeth. Macbeth decides that he cannot kill Duncan as he is his kinsman, and his subject(Act 1,Scene 7 1) yet Lady Macbeth taunts him saying

This graphic view of the extent to which Lady Macbeth would go to keep a promise would have been more accepted in our society than in that of Shakespeare. In the days of Shakespeare, women had no business arguing with their husbands and even less often was their argument or threat taken into consideration. Men were the be-all and end-all and this speech made by Lady Macbeth would have been of little persuasion. The Macbeth of Shakespeare was a military man, strong in his views and opinions and was definitely a victim of his own character. Conversely, Macbeth was warned of his assuming downfall by his weary conscience. On three occasions his conscience wearied him. Firstly, with the vision of the dagger before the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth is horrified and says





Is this a dagger, which I see before me,


The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch


thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.


(Act , Scene 1 -5)


This clearly shows the way in which, subconsciously, Macbeth knows his future actions are wrong and not acting on the warning signs of his conscience in this chilling scene he is haunted twice more by the wrath of his conscience. In the next scene, after the vicious murder of Duncan, sounds are heard by both Macbeth and his wife that are purely of their guilty conscience. Finally, in the scene following Banquo^s brutal murder Macbeth is haunted by a bloody ghost. This bloody ghost of Banquo rises out of Macbeth^s conscience to avenge its death and leave Macbeth uneasy. This is viewed by the outbursts of Macbeth at his feast shouting at the ghost to never shake thy gory locks at him. All three views of Macbeth^s guilty conscience show that indeed his downfall was his the fault of no one but himself, as he did not heed the advice of his conscience early in the play, and consequently his guilty conscience avenges him throughout the following scenes.


Secondly, Macbeth^s internal struggle is lost and he spiraled downward to his eventual death. Throughout the opening of the play Macbeth is plagued with an internal struggle of whether or not to kill the King. The internal battle changes sides many times before he eventually lets his ambition rule. In this passage Macbeth is arguing with himself as to why he shouldn^t kill Duncan

He battles here between right and wrong, the long time inner struggle won by his selfish ambition which is blossoming within himself at this point. He knows very well that what he is about to do is wrong and that it could destroy him, his doubts of the success of the murder prove his knowledge of the consequences. Therefore, Macbeth has accepted the mission and his downward spiral from thereafter is the fault of no one but himself. Ultimately at fault for his final choice in his internal struggle is Macbeth^s overwhelming ambition. This ambition is described as Macbeth^s hamartia, and rightfully so as it claims the lives of many on his escapade to the crown. Macbeth blatantly blames his ambition as being the motive for Duncan (and the following) murders in this passage

To prick the sides of my intent, but only


Vaulting ambition, which o^�erleaps itself,,


And falls on the other. (Act 1, Scene 7 5-)


Describing his ambition as the only thing the murder clings to, points us to the fact that no one else was pushing Macbeth along to go through with this murder. Macbeth also realizes in this passage that his vaulting ambition could cause him to destroy himself as he o^erleaps himself. This ambition is at no one else^s fault, but that of Macbeth. In Conclusion, the argument that Macbeth is a victim of fate is obviously false as his wife has no control over her husband. Macbeth is controlled by himself, accepting no warning signs of disaster from his conscience, letting his ambition rule his internal struggle and finally letting his ambition rule himself. Macbeth is the victim of nothing other than his own character.

God and religion play a somewhat great role in Go Tell It on the Mountain as “his only memories�were of the hurry and brightness of Sunday mornings” (1) which Sunday is a day only based on religion in Baldwin’s perspective and he sets the tone with this metaphor early in his novel to proclaim his sense of faith as a black preacher.


Racism and hate are the topics that bother James the most but are too essential to him to disregard. In “The Rockpile” in Going to Meet the Man, James writes in a sense that “he might somehow acquire wings” (15) which indicates James would love for the racism issue to be resolve yet he must battle with the concept until it expires. James is relentless when it comes to discrimination against blacks especially when white people deny their rights. Baldwin was seen at many sit-ins as well as TV shows to express his feelings on unfairness of race. With the powerful voice of Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Malcolm X, James joined forces with these two men to create a movement that will influence many Americans of all races to assist the equality of rights.


James is a remarkable individual that has the aptitude to persuade almost anyone to consider his ideas. In “The Outing” in Going to Meet the Man, James gives his characters’ “uncomfortable smiles” to symbolize their acknowledgment of the racial issue yet their choice to disregard the discrimination through appearance. Their emotion although doesn’t


change since every black person hopes for the same outcome to the existing predicament.


James’s search for love is a big fraction of his novels and short stories. Abstract


As a University of Phoenix student, I plan to learn and relearn information that will benefit me in the future as I raise my family and opportunities in the workforce present themselves to me. First, I plan to receive a degree in Business Management. I need that to accommodate my desire to start my own business. I am starting a new family and furthering my education is a positive start in the right direction to providing security and stability for them. The University of Phoenix has offered me the chance to enjoy my personal life while I continue my education without a lot of added stress and discomfort. Being able to attend school online, I can focus on more than one major situation happening in my life right now. With the recent birth of my first born child, I was not looking forward to giving divided attention to school or to him. I am fortunate enough to be attentive to both and I plan to make the most out of it. My biggest goal is to show others and prove to myself that I can be successful and that I do not have to be a part of the stereotypes that most of my peers have become. I can do this now as a University of Phoenix student.





My Personal Goals as a University of Phoenix Student


For as long as I can remember, I have been faced with challenges and adversities that, sometimes, seemed unconquerable. My family did not breed many college graduates. Maybe, they were comfortable with that but I wanted much more out of life for myself.


Although I had the desire and hunger for life success, I did not have the will and discipline to accept the sacrifices that came with it. So, throughout my grade school years, I did the very minimum work required to be advanced to the next grade. That was enough for me as I dealt with the everyday struggles of a low income lifestyle. Still, I always knew that I wanted to be successful in life no matter what obstacles awaited me. As I got older, I realized that success could only be achieved after being educated. By the completion of my senior year and after failing the eleventh grade, I had given up on college.


It has been over seven years since I graduated from high school. With the desire to rid myself of the security and routined lifestyle that I was accustomed to at home, I enlisted into the United States Army. I figured that I might as well do something with my life to bring in a steady income knowing that I would not be supported by my parents who were making just enough to survive. I traveled the globe, touching foreign lands, practicing many cultures, and meeting people from all walks of life. I remember being informed that the military would pay for me to go to college. All that needed to be done by me was to devote myself to the protection of my country. I soon discovered that it was not as easily carried out as I understood it to be. It was very difficult to complete all of the daily tasks that were expected by my superiors while going to school. In fact, I was denied the opportunity to even enroll into college classes because of the interruptions and distractions that could be caused. So, once again, I had given up my hopes of attending school.


At the end of an exciting and challenging career and after realizing that there is so much more that I wanted to experience at a young age, I knew that I could not move forward successfully without seeking higher education. I separated from the Army and returned to my hometown where I was planning to use my military college fund to finally attend school. Now, with a new baby and the new way of life that he brings, I am going after my dream once more. I recall a discussion I had about starting my son’s college fund and thinking that I am already expecting for him to attend college and I have not yet done so. I would be able to set a better example for him and persuade him to do well in school if I had already accomplished it.


With the job market being so demanding, it is very hard to find a decent job without, at least, having an associate’s degree. So, I am attending online classes and taking care of my son at the same time. It is hard sometimes but I now have the will and discipline that I lacked as a teenager. Whatever it takes to complete this class and the ones that follow, I will do, proudly.


For months, I searched around for the right college to attend. I researched my city’s community colleges, junior colleges, and universities. I also visited a private institution. None of these suited me well enough. Finally, I saw a commercial for University of Phoenix online. So, I researched its website and contacted a counselor. I could not have been pleased more. From the comfort of my home, I now have the opportunity to be active in my son’s life on a day-to-day basis while focusing on my schoolwork. I can do this without the stress and discomfort of a traditional college atmosphere. Without the obstacles and excuses I once had, I am finally embarking a challenge that I face with high expectations and hopes.





Through this online form of schooling, I, ultimately, plan to receive a degree in Business Management as well as equip myself with more than just the basic skills needed for most entry-level workforce positions. As a University of Phoenix student, I am comfortable in saying that receiving an education is more enjoyable than I believed college would be. I am pleased and know that all of my goals can and will be accomplished. I’ll complete this course with enriched learning skills and a degree to help me reenter the workforce and continue on my endeavor to be successful in life.

The move from a barter economy to the use of cash in the ancient cities of Mesopotamia was a gradual change. Bartering is to trade goods or services without the exchange of money and was how people did business. The transformation from bartering might have started when bartering was very active. Commerce started to became more and more frequent and the process of it became smoother. As this happened people became more selective of money and eventually coins came into play. The biggest difference about coins was that they had a visible guarantee of authenticity, which was a huge step for money and what it has become today.

I. Introduction

He uses various ways of repetition to represent the existence of the Dionysiac spirit. People¡¯s repetitive mentions of the past imply that the Dionysiac spirit still lives in their heart. The nature imageries repetitively used on the stage and characters¡¯ talking endow the play the poetic and metaphoric sense. And the repetitive appearance of magic moments and miracles is mysterious to the audience and beyond their imagination. These elements that Kushner uses proves the existence of the Dionysos and its attribute of invisibility. To let Dionysos appear on the stage before the audience, Kushner presents the Apollonian image of the Angel as the incarnation of the Dionysos spirit to the audience at the end of the play. God then tells Death to go and get a hold of Everyman and take him on a pilgrimage. Here for the first time Everyman is personified as literally every human, mankind. Death accepts God’s command and says, “He that loveth riches I will strike with my dart.” Death accepts Gods command and sets off in seek of Everyman.





Death spots Everyman walking alone and he commands him to stand still. Death asks him where he is going. Death tells him that God, as a messenger, has sent him because he has forgotten of God and of what significance God is for human kind. Everyman asks Death why would God send for him and what does he desire him to do. Death tells him that he needs to come on the pilgrimage and there he will show him what God desires of him. Everyman asks Death for more time to think about this pilgrimage that he must make because he will not be able to come back. Death tells Everyman that he needs to bring a book of accounts with a list of all his good deeds, all his sins, and on how he has spent his life. The book of accounts is for God’s use. He will look upon these and see if Everyman is worthy for Heaven or for Hell. Everyman has doubts on who Death is, so he goes into interrogating him to find out who he really is. Death then tells him who he is, and that he is Death. He who fears no man, does not spare or fear the rich or the poor, he cares for no bribes and gives no respite.


I am Death, that no man dreadeth.


For every man I’ rest, and no man spareth;


For it is God’s commandment


That all to me shall be obedient.


Everyman tries to get out of the situation with Death. He does not want to go on this journey. He proceeds to bribe him with a “thousand pound shalt” for him to come back on another day. Death tells Everyman that it cannot be that way and that he does not accept any form of bribes because if he did he would be a very rich man. He then goes on to tell him that his slate is clean unlike the one of Everyman. He then restates that it is God’s will that Everyman come with him on the journey. Everyman agrees on going with him, but he asks if he may bring along a friend. Death agrees to his plea as long as that person is willing to go along.


Every character in this play is given a name of a specific attribute that humans have. The first person that Everyman decides to ask is Fellowship. Everyman has faith in Fellowship and knows that he will accept his proposal to go on the journey. Once Fellowship approaches Everyman, he notices that there is something bothering Everyman. He asks him what is wrong and if he may say a prayer for him in order to help him with his sorrows. Everyman then goes into detail of what is bothering him and Fellowship tells him that he will stand by his side no matter what happens. Fellowship says that he will even go to hell with him and back if that is the case.


And so ye shall evermore;


For, in faith and thou go to hell


I will not forsake thee by the way!


After hearing this, Everyman goes on to tell Fellowship about his meeting with Death.


Fellowship then backs out of going with Everyman on the journey because he does not like what he has just heard. Fellowship shows what a coward he his by first saying he would do anything with him and then how he backs out after hearing his tale. He claims that people say certain things as jokes and what he told Everyman earlier was indeed a joke. Everyman begs Fellowship to go with him, but he still refuses to go along on his journey.


I will not a foot with thee go;


But, and thou had tarried, I would not have left thee so.


And, as now, God speed thee in thy journey


Everyman pleads with Fellowship to come, but he refuses to go. Everyman accepts his departure and Fellowship tells him that by his faith he will commend him to God and that “parting is mourning”. Everyman is left stranded, all alone, thinking of how Fellowship had forsaken him. He thinks of someone new that he might be able to take on his journey. While thinking of a new companion, Everyman comes to find that while he had “prosperity” he had many friends, but when in “adversity” his friends were unkind and hard to come by.





Everyman calls upon his cousin and Kindred. Both of these men can see that Everyman is not doing so well, so they ask what is wrong with him and notify him that they will be there with him whenever he needs them.


For, weet you well, we will live and die together.


In wealth and woe we will with you hold,


For over his kin a man may be bold.


Everyman goes on by thanking them for what they have just said. He proceeds to tell them that a messenger who is a High King’s Chief officer has come to him telling him that he needs to come on a journey because of his pain. He also states that he knows he will not come back and that there is a powerful enemy that is waiting for him, someone like the Devil, who has been watching him every minute of the day looking to get his soul. The reason for his visit with the Devil is to tell him all of the bad things that he has done and how he has spent his days. After hearing what he said, Cousin said to him that he would much rather spend five years fasting on bread and water. He also claims to have a cramp in his toe and that if he goes he will put a burden on the journey. Kindred, by Saint Anne says that he will not go with him and says that there is no point is trying to convince them of going. Kindred and Cousin wish him farewell and that they will see him on another day. Here we see that Everyman is left with no one to turn to. He must once again look for a companion to accompany him on his pilgrimage.





Everyman then begs of Goods’ advice and calls him over. Everyman gives a speech telling Goods that he is to go in front of an Almighty God and confess his life. He also tells him that money makes all right that is wrong. But once again, Goods tells him that he will not go along on the voyage.

I follow no man in such voyages;


For, and I went with thee,


Thou Shouldst fare much for worse for me;


In the bible, Jesus states that people can love God and Money but not both at the same time. This means that no one should preoccupy themselves by indulging in money and with God. True happiness and love is found within the soul. Everyman will be able to face God with nothing to hide. Here again, Everyman is left alone.





Everyman sits and mopes, thinking of whom he should ask next. He runs through his list of friends that denied his proposal. He remembers Good Deeds, but knows that she is weak and helpless, cant walk nor speak. Everyman’s sins have taken over Everyman’s good deeds. Everything that Everyman has done bad in the past is coming back to slowly haunt him, he is scared and does not know what to do. Good Deeds agrees to go along with him, she will also bring her sister, Knowledge. There is only one way that Knowledge will come along, that is if Everyman listens to whatever she says. Knowledge’s role in the play is acknowledgement of sin. Confession is then introduced into the play.





Confession calls to Everyman to kneel and ask for mercy. Confession is a character who symbolizes auricular confession, which is one of the four sacraments. The others are true sorrow for sin, absolution, and satisfaction.

When Everyman and Knowledge meet Good Deeds, the “oil of forgiveness” brought up, which is the sacrament administered to the dying. Now Gods mercy will save him from eternal punishment. Everyman begins his prayer which is recommended to the dying, and asks to escape damnation by having his name inscribed on the “table of penance.” He does this so he will be saved, because he must first suffer punishment on earth and then suffer in the “fires of Purgatory” as well. Now that he has confessed his sins, Good Deeds has the power to walk because he has been powerless the whole time. But first Good Deeds needs mortal sins to be confessed and pardoned before he has the power to do anything.

And am delivered of my sickness and woe.


Good Deeds agrees to go with Everyman and Knowledge continues to give Everyman the garment of remorse. This garment is a white sheet worn by public penitents and will cover his merry clothes or his naked body. The garment is also covered in Everyman’s tears. Good Deeds tells Everyman that he needs to call upon four of his final friends to come with them or else he will not go along with the journey. Everyman did not know who to call upon so he was told to ask Discretion, Strength, Five Wits, and Beauty. Five wits is a character that represents the human’s five senses. Everyman and Good Deeds are the only ones left to lie in the grave. All of these characters have helped Everyman write his list of good and bad deeds; however, in the end the only one left by Everyman’s side is Good Deeds. As Everyman is lying in the grave, he begins to speak.

When Holden talks to us about how much he loves the museum, he says


that the museum is great because everything just stays behind a piece of


glass and does not change. Some things should not change. He is really


saying that he doesnt want to change the way Allie changed. Also, he says


that the only thing that is different when he goes to the museum is himself


and he cant stand it. He does not want to go inside. This shows that he


does not want to see how much he has grown. He does not want to see how


much he has grown apart and different from Allie. He wont admit that his


feeling towards change has to do with Allie so that he wont have to deal


with it. He just keeps on going and never stops to think about it.





His lack of ability to communicate and deal with people is Holdens


worst problem. Throughout the book we see how hard it is for Holden to


admit to himself that he likes someone or how hard it is for him to have a


normal conversation. It is so difficult for him because if he begins to get


close to someone he thinks he will lose them just like he lost his brother.


He cant talk about himself to people because he will open up to them and


then trust them and become vulnerable to being hurt. Ackley is the only


person that Holden can be friends with. He was a virgin if ever I saw one.


I doubt if he ever gave anybody a feel (Salinger 7). Since Holden is so


convinced that Ackley is as innocent as he himself is to the world, Holden


trusts him the most out of all his friends but will not admit this. He


likes talking with Ackley. Everybody else has experienced more than Holden


and is less innocent and more mature, more like Allie was. Holden will not


let himself get close to anyone.





Holden fear of death is his fear of the most ultimate change.


Allies death was the most ultimate change in Holdens life so far. The


less innocent and pure he gets, the closer to death he thinks he becomes.


When he says that he wants to be the catcher in the rye and save the kids


from falling off the cliff, he is really saying that he wants to stop them


from falling down from innocence to adulthood. He wants to stop them from


getting closer to their inevitable death. At points in the story, Holden


cannot stop thinking about death which right afterwards leads him to think


about Allie. In chapter 0, Holden, at his most depressed moment, is


walking at night in Central Park. His hair is wet, and he feels and he


feels ice particles on the back of his head. He starts thinking that he


will perhaps die of pneumonia, and in that moment recalls Allies death and


the horror of his funeral (Burrows 8-8). Allies death has obviously


affected Holden in a way in which he cannot accept death and he always


thinks of death as change and hurt. He wants to save kids from the cliff in


the rye because he wished he had saved Allie.





Allies death was the beginning of Holdens changed outlook


concerning people, change and death. Throughout the story Holden shows his


lack of ability to communicate with others and to himself as a result of


his wanting to stay young and innocent. This desire stems from the pain he


felt from the loss of his brother.
