The Catcher in the Rye is a novel about a young teenage boy’s story of leaving the childhood and growing into maturity. Holden finds that everything’s wrong around him in the society of the adults. He clearly states that he wants to be a catcher in the rye as his future career. Holden’s painful experience of growing up causes him to want to be a catcher in order to change the future of the young kids.

Holden’s experience of living and discovering the world causes a depression in him about growing up and aroused his desire to make changes. After Holden left Pency, he encounters many kinds of phonies who annoy him so much. The undertaker Ossenburger and the headmaster Thurmer are two examples. When Marsalla laid a terrific fart, Ossenburger and Thurmer’s response surprises Holden when he says, “Old Marsalla. He damn near blew the roof off. … and old Ossenburger made out like he didn’t even hear it, but old Thurmer, the headmaster, was sitting right next to him on the rostrum and all…He didn’t say anything then…”(17) Holden’s greatly disturbed by the adult phonies who cover their real face with a mask and believe they are doing the right thing. Holden hates to grow up and live with those phonies in the society. In the novel, Holden says that sex is something he doesn’t understand. He has had quite a few opportunities to lose his virginity, but he never get around to it when he states “You never know whether they really want you to stop, or whether they’re just scared as hell, or whether they’re just telling you to stop so that if you do go through with it, the blame’ll be on you, no them. Anyway, I keep stopping.”() Holden’s experience with sex indicates that sex is something that is mysterious and hard to understand. Apparently he is feeling afraid and uncomfortable about dealing with the complexness of being mature. In addition, Holden can’t control himself when his nice, intelligent brother Allie dies that he says “I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my had was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn’t do it.”() Holden encounters a great loss when his brother Allie dies and He actuallyfears that all of Allie’s innocence and purity will disappear with his death. His uncontrollable pain arouses his plan to fight back against the loss of childhood happiness. Holden’s sad experience of growing up causes his isolation from the society and he feels extremely painful and lonely.

Holden desires to be a catcher in the rye to change the future of the kids so that they won’t encounter the same painful experiences he faces in his life. When Phoebe asks Holden what he really wants to do in his life, Holden responds, “Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around - nobody big, I mean-except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them.”(17) Holden desires to look after the kids and willing to save them from falling into the darkness of the adulthood. He wants to protect their innocence and purity and keep them as a simple kid. In addition, Holden dreams about being a deaf-mute and living in a little cabin and marrying a deaf-mute and says, “ if we had any children, we’d hide them somewhere. We could buy them a lot of books and teach them how to read and write by ourselves.”(1) Holden wants to get away from the society from surrounding his kids by isolating them from the community. Also as being a catcher, Holden attempts to prevent the kids from being identified and valued by the society. Moreover, when Holden go to Phoebe’s school to leave her the note, he erases the “f word” on the wall. Then he saw another one as he says “… and I saw another ‘Fuck you’ on the wall. I tried to rub it off with my hand again, but this one was scratched on, with a knife or something. It wouldn’t come off. It’s hopeless, anyway.”(01) By erasing the “f word”, Holden’s preventing the kids from perversion. However, he was depressed that he was unable to accomplish this job all the time because sex is something that’s not erasable once you have it with you. Holden wants to be a catcher and attempts to protect the kids from the harms that society might hurt them when they grow up.

Holden wants to catch the childhood and makes everybody to be easily understood and eternally stabilized. However, in his own experience of attempting to be a catcher and protecting the kids convinces him that he will never be able to prevent the kids from facing the darkness of the society. As time goes by, kids would eventually grow up and become a member of the society just like he is growing up even though he doesn’t want to.
