One can only understand how things are the way they are, when they themselves can identify the source from which those things are derived. Although it is possible to learn from the experiences of others, that knowledge is limited. In the end if one cannot experience those things or events for themselves, there can never be a complete understanding.

The ability of sight by one’s eyes can be used to see objects and colours. However someone can attempt to see various things, but if they do not understand the source from which vision comes from, the object will remain invisible. One must first be able to comprehend that there are many factors that contribute to vision. First the Sun must provide the light, and then the light will be used to make the object visible.

Just as there is a greater source that causes vision, the same theory can be applied to truth. Truth provides the mind and soul with knowledge and understanding. This knowledge and understanding allows for one to posses intelligence. Since in order to attain knowledge and understanding there must be truth, one should also be aware that truth could only exist if there is goodness. And everything originates from goodness, so when this goodness is missing all knowledge is no longer concrete and valid, but full of opinions and beliefs. This absence of goodness allows one to feel as though they are not intelligent.

So when comparing both aspects one may find that if there were no Sun then there would be no light; without light objects would not be brought into existence. This means that the mind needs to be able to see objects in order to know that they exist. Even though the Sun has the ability to bring objects into existence, the Sun itself is not equal to existence. Similarly when considering the mind and soul’s quest to acquire knowledge, one must recognize that in order to obtain knowledge it must be extracted from goodness. Although with goodness the objects of knowledge have a sense of being, goodness itself holds a greater status. Which means that the difference between the Sun and goodness is that without goodness there would be nothing because everything is derived from Good.

I agree with Plato’s views about the existence of something greater than anyone person or thing where all things are descended. Everything that happens in the visible world as well as in the intelligible world can only occur with the aid of other factors. And if one can understand that, the knowledge that they attain as a result of that understanding is essential. This is because only then will they be able to fully comprehend how or why things are the way they are.

I do not however, completely agree with his views when he says that Good is the ultimate principle of reality and truth. The being, which I believed to be the one where all things are derived, is God. Being Catholic I strive to attain faith and to have a good conscience which all comes from God, who is the ultimate principle of reality and truth.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “mans response to God by faith must be free, and…therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace faith against his will.” Since faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man one must be able to determine how to attain the faith they need in order to reach eternal life with God. Just as the sun is needed to produce light and light is needed to make objects more clearly visible, God provides us with faith which assists in keeping a good conscience that is needed so that ones faith can remain strong. “Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith.”
