Romeo and Juliet Fate or Chance?

One view of the play sees Romeo and Juliet as victims of fate. To what extent do you agree with this? Having a complex plot, and too many deeply involved characters, we cannot simply state that Romeo and Juliet were purely victims of fate. The tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet, and the play itself, are anchored on three notions that of fate, chance and choice. Fate contributed, though it was not the sole factor in the deaths of the young lovers. The many ‘unstoppable’ events, Shakespeare’s telling us of their love being told in the stars, and the ancient grudge between the families, are prime examples of fate being a part of Romeo and Juliet. Chance in the undetermined figure in Romeo and Juliet, with coincidence and misadventure playing in every readers mind as the many events unfold. Choice; vital decisions by each character, and judgments based on what an individual believed to be right or wrong, once again shows how many varied outcomes there may have been. At the end of the day though, due to fate, chance and choice, Romeo and Juliet committed suicide together, completing a tragic five days in which they fell in love, married and eventually died. Romeo and Juliet, many believe, was a tragedy brought upon by destiny. Fate may well have brought Romeo and Juliet together, or at least contributed along the rocky path to their deaths. Many events were shaped as fate in Romeo and Juliet. If Mercutio was indeed destined to die, then perhaps the entire tragedy was unavoidable. Romeo, often foreseeing fate, indicates this as he tries to stop Tybalts and Mercutios brawling Gentlemen, for shame, forbear this outrage! And again after killing Tybalt O, I am Fortunes fool. Fate may have also had it that Friar John was unable to deliver the important message to the banished Romeo. These key events, among others, have extended the role of fate past the prologue. Fate by the stars, is given to us a factor in Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. In the prologue where we are told, A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their lives. From this, it is easy to see that Shakespeare wanted us to have the idea of Romeo and Juliet being killed by fate heavily weighing on our minds. Another look at the play being determined by the stars sees Romeo trying to alter fates destructive path Is it e’en so? Then I defy you, stars!, Romeo exclaims, saying that fate has played role enough; he will dictate what is to come. Once inside the tomb with Juliet, Romeo again challenges fate Will I set up my everlasting rest, or shake the yoke of inauspicious stars. Even as the stars supposedly hold the fate of Romeo and Juliet, the families of Montague and Capulet still have much to contribute. Once again, the prologue introduces us to fate, this time from a family perspective. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny…From forth the fatal loins of these two foes… Here we are again given the thought that Romeo and Juliet are destined to die, and that the bitter feud between their families has a major part to play. Especially by using the word ‘from,’ it tells us that as a result of the two quarreling families, there is destined to be a death toll. What’s in a name? A love-sick Juliet complains of her ill-fate of being Capulet, as does Romeo of being Montague, when he tells a servant, Ay, mine own fortune in my misery. This illustrates as the story progresses, that like Juliet, he cares not of a name. The role of fate in their families plans and histories, and by the stars, is shown in many instances, saying that the deaths of Romeo and Juliet may have been predetermined and unavoidable. Chance coincidence and misadventure, may well have brought the downfall of Romeo and Juliet. The ever analytical Juliet ponders the role of coincidence in her new found love My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Perhaps the irony of coincidence lies in the only true love each Romeo and Juliet found was in that of a loathed enemy. A major coincidence that shaped the entire story, would be the chance meeting by Romeo and Benvolio with a servant who could not read. My master is the great rich Capulet; and if you be not of the house of Montagues, I pray you come and crush a cup of wine, the servant tells Romeo. Romeo’s luck is extended with it being a masquerade ball; therefore his Montague face being disguised. These coincidences lead to the ‘love at first sight’ meeting of Romeo and Juliet. With coincidence being beneficial to the cause of Romeo and Juliet, another aspect of chance; misadventure, was quite the opposite. Contradicting its stance on fate, the prologue tells us of chance their misadventur’d piteous overthrows. Misadventure in Romeo and Juliet relates mainly to the title characters, whose death may have come about due to Misadventure’s winding path. Many characters often indicate that Romeo and Juliet’s misadventure is their own fault for being passionate, young lovers, such as Balthasar, when warning Romeo not to be rash. I do beseech you, sir, have patience your looks are pale and wild, and do import some misadventure. Juliet too experiences great misadventure, after her secret marriage to Romeo, her parents arrange for her to marry the County Paris. It may be so, for it is not mine own, says Juliet, of her proclaimed ‘fortune’; or what she believes to be misfortune and bad timing. Romeo and Juliet did, after all, kill themselves, and even chose to continue their relationship - both knowing the disastrous consequences it may bring. Friar Laurence chose to marry Romeo and Juliet; Mercutio chose to brawl with Tybalt, and Romeo, although overcome with emotion, did chose to kill Tybalt. As illustrated in these critical turning points, the characters emotions greatly influenced their choices, which in turn, may have indeed killed Romeo and Juliet. All characters at some point made decisions based on what they believed to be right or wrong. In one respect I’ll thy assistant be. For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour into pure love, justifies Friar Laurences motives for marring Romeo and Juliet. An unjustified motive of the Friars may have been to give Juliet the poison, though Juliet herself chose to drink it. In the case of the Apothecary, My poverty, not my will consents, he said, as he sold the poison to end Romeo’s life. Three simple words by Prince Escalus, Romeo is banished, may have permanently changed the rocky course of love and life for Romeo and Juliet. This vital decision was correct, even if Prince, like most other characters, did not contemplate results before they made decisions. Even if they did, no one could possibly think of the eventual outcome in the end, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves because their judgment told them it was the only thing to do. Therefore it was not entirely fate that lead to Romeo and Juliet committing suicide, nor chance, nor a decision made by a particular character, but a combination of many factors. We are not offered a simple solution in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, and whether it was their destiny, misadventure, coincidence, or choices made by certain characters, we cannot blame the deaths of Romeo and Juliet on one aspect. I do not believe that Romeo’s and Juliet’s demise can be completely pinned onto anyone or any one thing. There are several possible reasons why the death of Romeo and Juliet happened. Some have small parts to play and others play a much larger role on their final decision to commit suicide.

There are several different less important reasons that force Romeo and Juliet to their end. The first is the feud between the Capulets, Juliet’s family and the Montagues, Romeo’s family and their stiff necked code of honour making their young men resort to violence and bloody actions. Subsequently Romeo is propelled into a ‘fire eyed’ fury by the death of Mercutio.

Furthermore, Lord Capulet was responsible for finding Juliet a husband. Although Juliet initially agreed to her fathers choice, Paris, she would have never been able to suggest someone else, let alone Romeo, even though she loved him so much. Her father would be deeply insulted if his daughter dared to choose otherwise. Juliet made that choice and incurred the mighty wrath of Capulet.

Capulet’s wrath is shown in the following quote where he addresses Juliet with ; ‘ Go with Paris to St Peters church or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither’ Act Scene 5.

On the other hand another factor would have to be the friar and his motives. He marries the lovers in secret. He devises dangerous plans that will ensure his own part in the affair is concealed. Juliet fears that he might have given her a real poison.

I believe that the main and most consequential cause of Romeo’s and Juliet’s death is that the lovers were fated to die, as we know from the opening lines of the play.

‘ The pair of star crossed lovers fate their life’. (The Prologue)

The ‘star crossed’ lovers being Romeo and Juliet. Their deaths come across as a result of tragic mistakes, chiefly as a result of people acting in haste. An example of this is Romeo’s rush of blood in Act .

Although we know that Romeo and Juliet are fated to die, we still hope against hope that the workings of fate might be thwarted. However , time and time again we are disappointed. For example, just when everything is going so well Romeo is caught up against his will in a series of events that shatters his happiness and which leads to the death of Tybalt.

Romeo reacts swiftly when he decides to return to Verona to be with Juliet. Only at the end when two of Verona’s finest young people have perished is there time to consider the consequences of what has occurred. At last common sense prevails when the Prince finds out that all are punished and the ‘parents strife’ is finally buried.

The Highway Law Enforcement

In the United States, there are State Police officers, they are also known as the “Highway Patrol.” There job is to ensure safety to the entire public, as well as perform services to citizens. The state police perform a variety of duties and tasks that they must carry out during their shifts. There are also a variety of requirements that must be met to become a state officer, and even after you pass all of the tests and graduate from the twenty six-week academy, there are still many hardships once you are a Highway patrol officer. Why would anyone want to do this? The most likely reason is to be granted a certain authority, knowledge and skills to serve and protect the entire public.

There are many requirements that must be met to become a Highway Patrol. To be able to join the C.H.P or California Highway Patrol, you must first pass a variety of requirements, for example the minimum age at which you can apply to the California Highway Patrol is 1 years old. (Ferguson 161). The age requirement is so high probably to ensure proper education as well as time to graduate from the C.H.P academy. Also the job might require activities that would require an officer to be a certain age. Other requirements that must be met are must posses a high school diploma, must be a U.S citizen, and have to pass the 6-week C.H.P academy where you will be properly trained. (Police officers 161) The requirements to become an officer are very basic, involving minimum school and being a certain age. The training academy would also further a cadets knowledge of the law. These requirements are to be met to ensure that an officer is properly trained in his duties. In addition the many requirements which are to be met to become a state police officer are to ensure that they have the proper knowledge and skills to perform and carry out their jobs.

Before being eligible for the highway patrol, a 6-week CHP training academy located in west Sacramento must be completed. During the period of the academy, cadets will be trained in “academic courses, physical training, vehicle operation and the use of weapons” (“CHP Officers Network”). Proper training in these courses is essential to the state officer’s job, and it would further help them to keep control in the field. The training the cadets go through would further insure that they would have the ability to be ready for any problem that might arise. Also the academic courses would give the cadets insight as on how to go about writing reports, from an accident or an incident. In addition a person must complete the training academy and be properly trained in order to continue the path to becoming a State Officer.

At the end of the 6-week training academy a final examination must be completed in order to be accepted as an officer. The examination consists of a pass/fail written test (CHP Officers Network). The written exam would test your academic knowledge on what you have learned in the training academy. After the written test is taken trainees must then pass a physical ability test (CHP Officers Network). This exam is to test your peak physical abilities and to see a person’s maximum potential in the field. It would be best for cadets to be physically fit to pass the exam. After both the written and physical exam are completed, they must then have a final interview with an officer, and must achieve a minimum rating of 70%. (“CHP Officers Network”). The final interview cadets would be asked questions to evaluate if they are mentally fit to join the CHP. It also gives insight as to if a person is fit to be a highway patrol. It also reviews the cadet’s personal intentions in the Highway Patrol. In addition the final examinations are to evaluate cadets to see if they are Physically as well as mentally fit for the State Police Officers.

After all of the many requirements are met, all of the tests are passed and a cadet is accepted into the California Highway Patrol they still have many duties that must be followed in their jobs. For example a state officer monitors the traffic and highways (Ferguson 161). While they monitor traffic officers keep their eyes out for any hazardous situations and any situations that need to be attended to. They are also required to arrest criminals statewide (“State Police Officers”). Officers are given the responsibility to chase Lawbreakers State wide in case of an emergency on the road. Highway patrol officers enforce motorcycle laws and regulations (“State Police Officers”). Law enforcement officers are usually as strict on motorcycles as well as road vehicles. Officers direct traffic when needed (“State Police Officers”) CHP might direct traffic if an accident takes place, and take control of traffic. Directing traffic could be dangerous so Officers must be cautious when directing traffic. While officers monitor traffic they “write traffic tickets or issue warnings to drivers who are violating traffic laws or not observing safe driving practices” (Ferguson 161) Police might give out tickets to persons who brake the speed limit. They also might let persons off with just a warning if the person has an understandable reason. Furguson states that, “officers must give first aid to any injured persons” and also write reports after accidents occur. Officers would most likely learn first aid in the twenty six-week training academy. The knowledge in first aid would be a lifesaving trait to have for an officer in case of an emergency. In addition highway patrol officers perform a variety of duty to further serve and protect all that needs it.

During the career of a California Highway Officer their salaries may differ. For example after graduation from the CHP Academy an officer’s salary would range anywhere from $841.00 to $000.00 (“CHP Officers Network”). Starting Salaries would most likely vary from location. Also it could differ depending on the officers performance. Other officers higher in rank and have attended a two to four year college majoring in criminal law would receive a salary ranging up to $571.00 (“CHP Officers Network”). Once an officer has moved up in ranks, put there share of time into the service and attended the right schools there salary would be have a better chance of being higher, and receiving more benefits as well. In addition State Police Officers salaries differ depending on the schools they have attended, the location they are assigned and the time that they have put into being a Highway Patrol Officer.

After an accident occurs Highway Patrol Officers must then write a report reviewing the situation. For example if an accident takes place, sometime after the officer who was on duty must then write a report (“Police Officers 161”). After The report has been written and filed, it is then used by investigating officers who will determine the cause of the accident (“Police Officers 161”). The investigating officers will look for key clues and evidence to help them reenact the accident. In addition after accidents take place officers must write a report reviewing what had happened, and then the report to be reviewed by specialists to determine why that accident occurred.

California Highway Patrol officers go through a lot to get their jobs done, before and during their careers in law enforcement. Persons joining the CHP must first acquire a highschool diploma then, CHP officers most of the time attend two to four year colleges, persons they must train in a twenty six week academy learning how to perform all of the tasks and duties that an officer must know how to carry out. They must also be at least the age of 1 in order to become a Highway Patrol. After they must pass a gruesome evaluation to test their abilities academically, physically and mentally. After which all of the requirements is met the cadets graduate from the academy and are then which eligible for the CHP. Once accepted into the State police they still have many daily duties to accomplish such as, officers must carry out tasks such as roadside assistants, monitor traffic, perform first aid, conduct driver examinations, and give safety information to those who request it, they also write tickets to those who violate traffic laws and take control of emergency situations. Soon after writing a report reflecting what had happened. The state police officers also earn salaries ranging from $841.00-$571.00 depending on their ranks and the location of their departments as well as the time that they have put into the department of justice. In addition Highway Patrol Officers must meet a list of requirements to join the State Police and once accepted, officers still must perform many duties, they also enforce traffic laws to keep the roads safe to citizens, as well as do everything that is necessary to help resolve any situation that might arise, and they perform all of these duties to serve and protect the public.

In Gullivers Travels, Jonathan Swift makes a satirical attack on humanity. In the final book, Swift takes a stab at humanity by simultaneously criticizing physiological, mental, and spiritual aspects of humans. Literary critics Ronald Knowles and Irvin Ehrenpreis both agree that the last book focused entirely on satirizing humanity. The Yahoo brutes that inhabit Houyhnhnm Land are a despicable species that have the physical appearance of humans. Though their behavior seems to be decadent and irrational, Swift shows that most of their behavior have parallels in the life of civilized humans. The Houyhnhnms seem to embody virtue and all the perfections that humans seek, but there are inconsistencies in their behavior that are reflective human faults. The Houyhnhnms do not look human in appearance, so Swift uses them to reveal hypocrisies of human thought. Throughout the book, Swift makes attacks on the religious perception of man; He also expresses disagreement with deist ideology. Ehrenpreis and Knowles have very similar opinions concerning Book IV of Gullivers Travels, but Knowles expresses a more concrete interpretation of the satire. According to Ehrenpreis, Swift lived in John Lockes time, and takes many ideas of humanity from him. Locke said that humans tend to classify species as man by their physical appearance. If there was a man without reason, he would be a dull irrational man, and if there was an animal could express reason, they would be an intelligent and rational animal. To Ehrenpreis, the Yahoos embody an ironical reflection upon the fact that the bulk of unthinking men do in practice treat external shape as a sounder guide to humanity than reasonable conduct. Besides being more primitive than humans, Yahoos behave and function like civilized humans. Knowles points out that Yahoos fight with other groups and each other without apparent reason. Their avarice for certain shiny stones of no practical use lead to more fighting and theft. In more contemporary or civilized societies, those shiny stones can be paralleled to material possessions such as jewelry. Knowles observes that like humans, Yahoos suck the juice from a particular root that produces the same affect as alcohol. Similar to many humans, the Yahoos consumed the juices without temperance. Ehrenpreis thinks that Swift uses the Yahoos to as an example of Lockes suggestion that humans are more easily identified by vice than virtue. The Houyhnhnms seem to be reasonable, rational characters. They also seem to embody good virtues that humans strive to achieve. Ehrenpreis and Knowles both find inconsistencies in the depiction of Houyhnhnms. Ehrenpreis believes that the paradoxes in the writing are supposed to reflect paradoxes of human thought. When Gulliver first meets the inhabitants of Houyhnhnm Land, they are curious about the covering on his body. The Houyhnhnms are surprised when they first see him take off his hat; It is a reasonable and natural reaction since the Houyhnhnms do not wear clothing. Ehrenpreis argues that repeated occurrences show that Houyhnhnm thought revolves around being a horse. He thinks that is reflective of the anthropocentricity of humans. An example of the anthropocentricity of humans is the attempt to communicate with babies. A newborn does not know any human languages, but adults often assume that the baby is trying to talk to them when they make meaningless noises. Knowles thinks that the Houyhnhnms are not ideal characters, but reflections of humans. If the whinny, neighing like sounds are eliminated from Houyhnhnm, the word Hounum is a jumbled pronunciation of human. According to Knowles, the Houyhnhnm society implies that their beliefs ore founded on self-deception. The limits of my language mean the limits of my world. The Houyhnhnm language did not have negative words like war, deceit, and evil. By the quote above, Ludwig Wittgenstein suggests that Houyhnhnms could not have a true sense of good if they did not know what evil was. The Houyhnhnms also embody a sense of arrogance and bias that exists in humans. Their only sense of evil is in terms of the Yahoos. That is reflective of some governing institutions that blame others as the source of corruption and evil. Historically, groups like gypsies, Armenians, and Jews have fallen under that category of scapegoats. When the Houyhnhnms observe Gulliver, they immediately classify him as a Yahoo. By doing so, they do not act as rational creatures because they ignore the great number of differences and only observe superficial similarities. The idea of not being able to understand good without understanding evil can be explained in religious terms as well. Throughout Book IV, there are many links to Christian ideas. Ehrenpreis thinks that Swifts writing plays off a debate between Locke and Stillingfleet over the definition of man. Stillingfleet uses a Trinitarian argument that defines man as a creature that enjoys a special subsistence. This definition is not practical because the special subsistence is not defined. Locke defines it as that faculty, whereby man is supposed to be distinguished from beasts, and wherein it is evident he much surpasses them. It seems that Swift does not support either argument, because the physical subsistence of man is embodied in irrational creatures, while the intellectual subsistence is embodied in a rational beast. Knowles shows that by giving a beast reason, Swift can point out the fallibility of Deist thought. Anthony Collins wrote, whosoever live by reason are Christians. Since the Houyhnhnms live by reason, then it can be implied that they are Christians. The ending of Book IV is another attack on Deist thought. The Deists thought that every Man is bound to follow the Rules and Directions of that Measure of Reason which God hath given him... It is the mistake of wise and good men that they expect more Reason and Virtue from human nature, than taking it in the bulk, it is in any sort capable of. When Gulliver returned to England, he measures humans by Houyhnhnm standards of reason and virtue, and becomes disappointed because he expects Yahoo brutalism. Ehrenpreis has a different interpretation of the ending. He believes that the kind of influence the Houyhnhnms ideal virtues had on Gulliver is similar to the strict and perfect obedience to Christian ideals as would have been done in eighteenth century society. So Swift is saying, if men did practice Christianity in such a manner, they would destroy civilization as they knew it, in the same way Gulliver destroyed his family. Jonathan Swift uses a lot of satire in writing Gullivers Travels. Some of the satire is blunt and apparent. The Yahoos, with their exact likeness to humans in form, conveyed the degenerative nature of humans without civilization. At the same time, their presence also brings about the realization that even under the guise of civilization, humans are corrupt and decadent. The use of the ideal Houyhnhnms is deceiving. The apparent reason for using reasonable animals is to make the human-like Yahoos seem more irrational. From literary criticisms by Knowles and Ehrenpreis, it seems like the Houyhnhnms were used as objects of satire. What was not apparent, but pointed out by both critics was the fact that inconsistencies in the Houyhnhnm character are reflective of paradoxes in human thought. The only support Ehrenpreis gave was the parallel between the hippocentricity of the Houyhnhnms and the anthropocentricity of humans. Knowles used many examples from the book to support his ideas. The most subtle criticisms were made on religion. Ehrenpreis explanations mostly used supporting evidence from Locke. He used an argument against Trinitarianism and another on Christianity in general. Knowles explanation of the religious satire seemed more plausible because it was focused on Deism. He used works from many authors to first convey Deist ideals, then from examples in the book, tried to show the paradoxes

I chose the song “Nice to Know You” by the group “Incubus.” Brandon Boyd the lead of singer of the group has been known to write songs about his past girlfriends to say goodbye to them or talk about how good it used to be. In this song he is talking about how good he feels now that he has broken up with his current girlfriend. As he says in the chorus of the song “Goodbye, nice to know you” which means they ended on a bad note and he is ready to move on. Incubus uses some literary term in this song and they are imagery, metaphor, and rhyme scheme.

This song starts off with some imagery by saying “Better than watching Geller bending silver spoons” and “Better than witnessing newborn nebulas in bloom.” (Line 1-) Brandon starts the song off with how his day is going as he had broke up with his girlfriend the day before. The next two lines give a sense that his girl had cheated on him and that is why he broke up with her. The evidence of this is “Perspective pries your once weighty eyes and gives you wings” (4). This line seems that he did not notice until he opened his eyes and saw that his girl was cheating on him.

The chorus comes up next and Brandon says goodbye to his girl by talking about how great he feels with her gone. Brandon also screams the chorus as if he is really talking to his ex-girlfriend. By changing his tone it, you can really relate to him if you have ever had someone cheat on you in a relationship, and it does not feel to good so that is why he is screaming the chorus. There is also some repetition in the chorus he repeats the chorus fours time to get the point to across to his ex-girlfriend.

In lines 5-6 he is talking about how bad it hurt when he found out his girl had been cheating on him. He says “Deeper than the deepest Cousteau would ever go” (5) in which he is talking about how deeply hurt he was by her wrong doing. In line 8 there is a simile when Brandon says “To obtain a birds eye is to turn a blizzard to a breeze” he is talking about how it was hard to watch his ex girl’s every move to see that she was cheating on him. The song then ends with the chorus and a question to his ex girl.

livepaperhelp.com

This song has a rhyme scheme of aa, bb, cc, dd, and ee. At the end of the first two lines ‘spoons’ and ‘bloom’ rhyme which make it aa. The next two lines have ‘sings’ and ‘wings’. The chorus starts off with cc with ‘today’ and ‘specify’. Then lines 5-6 have ‘go’ and ‘know’ which would be dd. Lines 7-8 have ‘trees’ and ‘breeze’. That is all the rhyme there is in the song.

In conclusion, Incubus is a great band and has always put out good music to listen to. They use good imagery words to put the audience in their shoes when they are listening to the songs. By using similes in their songs it also explains his words he is singing and also a way you could relate to his situation. Every two lines in this song rhymed except for the chorus where he mostly repeats the same line over and over again. This is a great song to say goodbye to a cheating girlfriend.

Mary Maloney plays the part of a sweet and innocent wife in the short story of Lamb to the Slaughter however she does not hold this role of the perfect little housewife for very long, for she murders her husband using the frozen leg of a lamb. In the large majority of short stories male characters are structured as domineering over the females who are shown to be submissive, though this does not ring entirely true when referring to the short story Lamb to the Slaughter. The stereotypical type portrayed in this story is generally not reflected in the men and women in today’s society.

Mary Maloney starts off as a perfect example of how females are portrayed as submissive in texts, however; something happens that makes her seem to snap. It could be the cause of all the pent up anger over the years she’s been married and undermined as an individual due to her gender. In the world that she lived in, there was no way of allowing her to release her frustration, for it was not considered proper to do so and she would be beaten or shunted from society if she had done.

Another cause of this violence could be the fact that the writer skims over the point where Patrick Maloney tells her about why he is leaving her and the unborn child. For, it is written “And he told her. It didn’t take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat very still through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror”, it automatically makes the reader assume the worst, that is that Patrick is cheating on Mary and seeing another woman whom he has grown to like more. Before the moment where he tells her this, Mary is trying to discuss his unusual late nights at work in the police force. This encourages the idea that Patrick Maloney has not actually been forced to work later into the night but has actually been seeing another woman or women. It is my belief that with all of these factors crashing down upon her, the moment Patrick informed her he was going out, Mary simply snapped and without thinking about what she was doing or the consequences involved, she killed her husband Patrick Maloney.

Lamb to the Slaughter portrays the female as a submissive character, which is generally unlike the real world today where females are at equal ranking with males and speak their minds when they wish. For it has long been debated about who is the superior sex! We have just recently realised that it is not necessary for a woman to stay at home and do the house work while the men go out and work. Woman are just as capable to obtain and handle roles of power as the men in our society and sometimes even better than most, however jobs that require physical labor are more suited to men for they have a greater physical capacity to deal with this. Therefore; when comparing this to the principles within the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” there is a specific difference in the attitudes and values that are held by the men and women. Even though Mary Maloney does not hold to this role for long she is still maintains those values, as she falls back into her role of submissiveness after the murder of Patrick Maloney.

When relating to” Lamb to the Slaughter” and its portrayal of males and females and their domination over one another, it does not, as I see it reflect the real world today. We are as a majority of people, equal and do not try and dominate either sex in such an extreme manner that is portrayed within this short story.

Some students argue they are not receiving a fair grade, while others wonder why they achieved such a high grade with such low-quality work. This is a growing issue in many American colleges. Professors and students have argued about grades for many years. At Dixie State College, as at many institutions of higher learning, grade inflation is an unfortunate consequence of professors’ attempts at ameliorating their students.

The real problem is not grade inflation, but the differential application of grading standards by different professors. Students’ grades are often more attributable to professors’ personal attitudes towards grades rather than the performance of the students. Some students are disappointed in their grades, considering their efforts. A student may have worked hours on end to get an “A” grade on an assignment only to achieve a “B” or “C”. While, on the other hand, the student’s roommate scores an “A” because of the grading attitude of a much more lenient professor. Neither student wins in this kind of situation.

Some professors may argue that they happened to obtain the most brilliant students, and are rightfully giving out the “A” grade. This seems to escape the laws of probability. How could one professor receive all extremely intelligent students in one class? Even if all the students are that smart, there is no way they could have all done perfect work on that one assignment. Each student’s quality of work will vary on different assignments, for a variety of reasons, including knowledge or skill on the particular effort or differential effort.

Other professors may not claim to be blessed with the brightest students, but actually believe the high scores coming from their student’s result from their superior teaching skills. But, some students won’t benefit from the professors’ skills simply because of a late night out and falling asleep in class or missing class altogether. These students clearly aren’t being influenced by their professors if they aren’t even listening to the lectures.

The problem is simply a lack of uniformity in grading standards. The solution, while seemingly simple, is the development and implementation of uniform grading standards. While this solution may only be approximated, due to limitations on the level of uniformity of assignments and objectivity of grading standards, it is certainly a solution worth affording substantial and ongoing effort. Students’ future opportunities depend on their grades, not to mention to some degree their sense of identity and self-esteem. Professors may minimize the importance of grades, and that learning is what matters. But, the benefit of gaining knowledge must also be balanced with the opportunity to gain employment.

Some professors at DSC are aware of the growing problem, and are working to make it fair for their students, while other teachers are still handing out A’s to those who aren’t deserving of the grade. If the professors fight to make it fair, more and more will become aware of the growing problem of grade inflation, and will grade papers more fairly. Until then, grade inflation will still be a major problem not only at DSC, but also around different colleges in the nation.
